Woodfall Primary School was lucky
enough to receive funding from the
British Council this year. The school
was able to fund an exchange trip to
South Africa and carry out projects
based around the theme ‘Eco United.’
During Eco Week the children used
recyclable waste to make an Eco
Sculpture. Pupils also dressed in green
to raise money for World Wildlife Fund
and a group of children visited the

CLAYHILL INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

IMPROVEMENTS SOUGHT
Neston Town Council is calling for
improvements to the town’s industrial estate
off Liverpool Road.
Councillors have been told that business
owners feel isolated and neglected, and
are unhappy with what they see as lack of
support from the authorities.
At its June meeting the Town Council
agreed to a proposal from Cllr Andy
Williams (Neston Ward) for a wide-ranging
consultation with businesses on suggested improvements. These include improved signage
to the estate and on it, and efforts to “green” the area with tree and floral plantings.
The Council also considered whether a change in name to Neston Business Park would be
more appropriate and improve the image of the area.

NEW COUNCILLOR WELCOMED

Kay Loch has joined Neston Town Council as the new Town Councillor for Ness.
Mrs Loch, who is already a Cheshire West & Cheshire councillor, was chosen by the Town
Council from three applicants for the vacancy, following the resignation of Mike Wellman.
Mrs Loch has lived in Ness for 18 years.

NEW LINK IN THE CHAIN

Cllr Moira Andrews, first Chairman of Neston Town Council, has presented a new Town
Council crest to be added to the Mayor’s chain of office.
The sterling silver gilt blue enamelled crest will hang above the pendant. The chain was
originally that of the chairman of Neston Urban District Council which was abolished in 1974
when the borough of Ellesmere Port & Neston was created.

Having the right Will is probably the most

considerate thing you can do for your family
The changing face of society means that more people than ever would benefit from having a
Will.
Today’s family structures are more complicated than our inheritance laws - written in 1925 - could
possibly have foreseen. There are more unmarried couples and single households. Personal wealth
has risen and people now own a wide range of assets.
A standard Will helps ensure that the basic essentials are carried out according to your wishes ; the
Right Will can contain special clauses and trusts to help protect your
beneficiaries and your estate.
With the Right Will and good forward planning you could:
l Ensure children’s inheritance is secure if your partner remarries.
l Help prevent unnecessary loss of the Family Home to Care Fees.
l Reduce, even eliminate the amount of Inheritance Tax you pay.
l Leave things on special terms and conditions.
l Protect the special interests of some beneficiaries (disabled and
vulnerable persons, young children etc.)
Making a Will offers us peace of mind that our estate will be
distributed according to our wishes. However, the consequences of
dying without a Will fall hardest on those left behind to pick up the
pieces.
The “Right Will” for you is about putting All Your Affairs in order.

New guide for

Wirral walkers
A new edition of the popular ‘Wirral Walks: 100
Miles of the Best Walks in the Area’ comes out on
16th July.
With 27 ideas for local walks, now there is no excuse
for having nothing to do over the summer and beyond!
The walks range from 1½ miles long to a 10½ mile
‘shore to-shore’ route, right across our peninsula.
Most are around 3 to 4 miles – ideal for a stroll of one
and a half to two hours.
The author is Anthony Annakin-Smith, well known on
the Wirral as a walk leader and as a popular speaker
on the local history and landscape. Anthony said ‘We are really fortunate to have such
wonderful scenery on our doorsteps, and there is no better way to see it than on foot.
Pretty villages, beautiful beaches, glorious countryside and so many great views – what
more could you want?’
As well as giving clear directions and easy-to-follow maps the book tells readers about
the natural and man-made points of interest they can see. As Mike McCartney, Cultural
Ambassador for Wirral, who wrote the Foreword to the book says, ‘Not only does the
book suggest some great walking routes but it also explains what we can see along the
way, bringing Wirral’s scenic and historic heritage to life.’
So, whether you are interested in where dinosaur footprints have been found, signs of
our Viking ancestors from over a 1000 years ago or want to know something about the
wind farms off the coast today, the book will tell you.
‘I am often asked which is my favourite walk’ said Anthony. ‘It’s always a tricky
question but the peacefulness, historical interest and stunning views of the Burton
Point route take some beating. As a complete contrast I also love the buildings, street
art and sheer liveliness of New Brighton – this walk always throws up surprises.’
The book, priced at just £8.99, should be available from all good booksellers including
Linghams, Waterstones, W H Smith and Amazon.
Anthony will be leading four free walks this summer: at Parkgate on 24 July, to Neston
Old Quay on 27 July, the Neston Collieries on 8 August and Burton Point on 9 August.
For more details contact Neston Library on 337 4670.

For a chance to win a copy of ‘Wirral Walks’ just answer the following question:
Which people settled on the Wirral over 1000 years ago?
a) Vikings b) Victorians c) Visigoths?
Answers should be sent to: wirralwalks@hotmail.com Please include “Local
Competition” in the address line. Closing date is Monday 2nd August – the
winner will be picked at random from all ‘Local’ readers with the right answer.

Rhino mania
A RHINO has been let loose in a
local classroom, but there’s no
need for alarm. A huge team of
pupils from Neston Primary School
have been decorating the mini
rhino as part of this summer’s
Rhino Mania event in Chester . The
children christened their colourful
rhino ‘Ron’ and have spent lessons,
break-times and lunchtimes
creating their work of art.

I was a peripheral visionary. I could see the future, but only way off to the side.

Vivacious colours
are the defining
movement in 2010
The explosion of bright accent colours in
Wirral homes will continue to be the dominant
trend for window fashions for the rest of 2010.
That’s the view of Marc McQuilliam, who is
one of the region’s leading experts on window
blinds, shutters and awnings.
Marc, who owns Apollo Blinds Wirral, says that
homeowners are daring to be different and accent
colours such as mustard, purple and turquoise are
driving demand for window coverings which make
a statement all around the home.
“The impact of colour on our overall outlook
and emotions is driving the continued colour
revolution,” said Marc.
”Wirral homeowners are looking for positivity

BOOK REVIEWS:
BOOKS FOR SUMMER
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, MANAGER OF LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Paperback Fiction: The Lacuna - Barbara Kingsolver

Some of the national reviews have been rather lukewarm about this book, but I
really loved it. The main character, Harrison Shepherd, is a novelist who writes
romantic adventures. Born in Washington, by the age of 13 he is living in Mexico
with his mother, and her right-wing businessman boyfriend. Shepherd gets a job
as a cook with Diego Rivera and his artist wife, Frida Kahlo, (real life characters)
who take Trotsky into their household when he has to flee Russia and hide from
Stalin’s hit-men. The assassin eventually arrives, Trotsky is murdered, and the
second half of the novel deals with the way Shepherd’s private life is taken to
pieces by McCarthyist ‘Red’ witch-hunters who suspect him of being a militant
Communist.
I know many of our customers are big fans of The Poisonwood Bible and I
would dare to suggest this is just as good. Kingsolver has a magic way of looking
at history from a new angle and this is a highly satisfying and many-layered
novel. Perfect holiday reading and a great one for your Book Club- I hope to do
it in ours!

Biography: The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama

- David Remnick
The rise of Barack Obama is one of the great stories of this
century: a defining moment in American history, and one with truly
global resonance. Until now, no journalist or historian has written
a book that fully investigates the circumstances and experiences
of Obama’s life or explores the ambition and conviction behind his
journey to election. The Bridge offers a portrait, at once masterly
and fresh, nuanced and unexpected, of the man who was
determined to become the first African-American president. This
is a big book but an important one for students of American
politics and there are moments of small personal detail which
prevent it from becoming too dry.

Grace has had time to put together this book of mouth-watering dishes using
nothing but fresh ingredients. I can vouch for the deliciousness of her recipes
as she recently had a tasting session outside Linghams- the mixture of smells
drifting through the open door into the shop were utterly tantalizing! Her book
is beautifully produced with easy to follow instructions and lovely photography.
Highly recommended.
