talentedatbothfootballandcricket.Fromtheagesof11to16hecaptainedtheLeicestershireSchoolscricket

AlthoughLeicestermissedoutonpromotion,theyreachedthesemifinalsoftheFACup,andclinched
promotionayearlaterasLinekerscored26timesintheSecondDivision.In198384,heenjoyedregularFirst
Divisionactionforthefirsttimeandwasthedivision'ssecondhighestscorerwith22goals,althoughLeicester
failedtofinishanywherenearthetopoftheleague.HewastheFirstDivision'sjointtopscorerin198485with

in57gamesforhisnewteaminthe198586season.HewasagaintheFirstDivision'sleadinggoalscorer,this
timewith30goals(includingthreehattricks),andhelpedEvertonfinishsecondintheleague.Whileat
Everton,theyreachedtheFACupfinalforthethirdconsecutiveyearbutlost31toLiverpool,despiteLineker
givingthemanearlyleadwhenheoutpacedAlanHansentoscore.LiverpoolhadalsopippedEvertontothe
titlebyjusttwopoints."IwasonlyonMerseysideashorttime,nineor10monthsintotalreally,butitwasstill

Southampton.Onhisfinalleagueappearance,hescoredtwiceina31homewinoveraWestHamsidewhose
titlehopeshadjustdisappeared.However,heandhiscolleaguesweredeniedtitlegloryasLiverpoolalsowon

broughtinManchesterUnitedandWalesstrikerMarkHughes.BarcelonagaveLinekerhisfirstchanceof
Europeanfootball,asLeicesterhadneverqualifiedforEuropewhileheplayedforthem,andEvertonwere
deniedaplaceintheEuropeanCupfor198586duetothecommencementofthebanonEnglishclubsin
