result,helivedwithhisgrandmother,wholivedinthecity,whileattendingschool.Linekerwasequally
talentedatbothfootballandcricket.Fromtheagesof11to16hecaptainedtheLeicestershireSchoolscricket
team,andhadfeltthathehadahigherchanceofsucceedingatitratherthanfootball.[7]HelaterstatedonThey

in57gamesforhisnewteaminthe198586season.HewasagaintheFirstDivision'sleadinggoalscorer,this
timewith30goals(includingthreehattricks),andhelpedEvertonfinishsecondintheleague.Whileat
Everton,theyreachedtheFACupfinalforthethirdconsecutiveyearbutlost31toLiverpool,despiteLineker
givingthemanearlyleadwhenheoutpacedAlanHansentoscore.LiverpoolhadalsopippedEvertontothe

Southampton.Onhisfinalleagueappearance,hescoredtwiceina31homewinoveraWestHamsidewhose

broughtinManchesterUnitedandWalesstrikerMarkHughes.BarcelonagaveLinekerhisfirstchanceof
Europeanfootball,asLeicesterhadneverqualifiedforEuropewhileheplayedforthem,andEvertonwere
deniedaplaceintheEuropeanCupfor198586duetothecommencementofthebanonEnglishclubsin

Boot,makinghimtodatetheonlyEnglishplayertohavedoneso.Hescoredthesecondquickesthattrickever
ataFIFAWorldCuptournamentagainstPoland,thesecondEnglishplayertoscoreahattrickataWorldCup,
andscoredtwogoalsagainstParaguayinthesecondround.Heplayedmostofthetournamentwearinga
lightweightcastonhisforearm.HescoredforEnglandintheWorldCupquarterfinalagainstArgentina,but
thegameendedindefeatasDiegoMaradonascoredtwicefortheopposition(thefirstgoalbeingthe"Handof
