Abbreviated Lesson Plan

Topic: Properties of Matter

Grades: 4th

Date: 10/4/2016

Standard(s): SC.4.P.8.1 Measure and compare objects

and materials based on their physical properties
including: mass, shape, volume, color, hardness, texture,
odor, taste, and attraction to magnets.

Time:

Essential Question: How can you describe and measure

properties of matter?
Objective: Students will be able to gain an understanding that
certain materials are attracted to magnets and some are not.
Vocabulary:

HOT Questions:
1. How are magnets used in
our everyday lives?
2. How do you know if
something is magnetic?
3. Will an objects weight
affect whether or not it is
attracted to the magnet?

Matter- anything that takes up space and has mass

Mass: the amount of matter in an object
Hardness: How easily an object can bend or dent
Materials:
Toothpicks
Pennies
Coins
Paper cups
Rubber bands
Aluminum foil
Crayon
Paper
School Scissors
Bobby pins
Magnets

Assessment:
How will this assessment show
you that students have
mastered the objective?
The worksheets that are
provided will be used as an
assessment tool.
Informal notes and
observations can serve as an
assessment for the students.

Exit Question:
Did weight or size affect
whether the object was
attracted to the magnet?

Time

Task
Go over the anchor chart and discuss the different
physical properties of matter.

15
Minutes

Divide students into pairs with their bag of objects.

Have them explain what materials they have and
make a list on the board.
Ask students to study all of the objects and then
classify or group them based on what they know
about the materials. (refer to the physical
properties of matter anchor chart). Have the
students record their sorting method on the
worksheet provided.
Hold up a bar or horseshow magnet and ask the
student the first HOT questions.
Go over the last property of matter: attraction to
magnets. Explain to the students that they will
make predictions about whether or not the objects
in front of them are magnetic and then discover if
their predictions are correct.

Building Understanding (Whole Group Exploration /

Core):

Differentiation:
The teacher will differentiate and provide support in the
following ways:
Reteach (Greatest Support)
Core low
Core high
Enrich (Least Support)
Accommodations:
(What students need specific accommodation? List individual
students (initials), and then explain the accommodations you
will implement for these unique learners.)
