Seven Sins of Our Education

The author discussed some of the ways our education is ineffective and even harmful to
the students. I agree will almost all of his points. As a child I enjoyed an alternative means of
education through a private waldorf school and I can say with certainty that it helped me think
critically as opposed to completing the task to just get a grade. Grades werent even provided.
This correlates with point 6 that the author makes Inhibition of Critical Thinking where she
points out that in the public school system most students learn to avoid critical thinking in their
schoolwork. and this is because of the curriculums provided to the teachers and students, the
system of education as a whole. However, the author also states that school is a prison
because minors legally have to attend and while this is true it's also often a good thing. It gets
minors who are in abusive households out of the house for the majority of the day and it
prevents child labor in this country.

Why Read Literature

I agree with this author, John Lye, on the many reasons why literature is good to read.
Theyre hard to refute because in some cases his points are simply true as when he points out
literatures cultural importance that literature is culturally integrative, or that literature, as a form
of discourse controlled by the elite, is one of the means through which the elite maintain their
power which can be seen all the time. Literature as a means of talking to the masses provided
for an easy way to communicate and manipulate the audience and all literature is especially
representative of the time as can be seen in works such as Dracula where the main point is that
women cant be in control of their sexuality or enjoy it.

A student who earns a 4 goes beyond what was taught. A student who earns a 3 demonstrates a strong knowledge
of what is explicitly taught. A student who earns a 2 shows a grasp of the simpler concepts and may have errors or
omissions when it comes to the more complex concepts taught. A student who earns a 1 only demonstrates a partial
understanding of simpler concepts taught (Marzano 2006).
