Design of a Tube Coil Heat Exchanger

Task
Design a heat exchanger according the following data:
Tube side

Shell side

Medium

Hydraulic oil ISO VG 46

Water

Pressure

3 bar

3 bar

Temp. in

65 C

20 C

Temp. out

50 C

Boundary Conditions:
Use only standard tube and shell diameter.

Start COIL
Selection of basic data is displayed at first

Selection of basic data

First select the tube side and shell side medium. Choose Oil for the tube side medium. In a further step you will
be asked for the type of oil and the viscosity class.

Tube dimensions
Geometrical data for several types of tubes are implemented. If you dont want to use one of the saved tubes,
you may simply overwrite the according input field. Find more information with the Help button.
In our example we select the tube 25 X 2 Coil-Shell 12 Coil diameter 250
We select the smaller coil diameter of 240 mm: Tube 25 X 2 Coil-Shell 12 Coil Diameter 240
The distance Coil to shell and coil to cylinder is 12 mm in both cases.

Coil Pitch
The common coil pitches according the saved tube dimensions may be selected with the selection box. It is
also possible to enter the coil pitch directly.
For our example we choose a coil pitch of 32 mm
Furthermore we assume that the coil consists of one tube only. Number of tubes = 1

Shell dimensions
Geometrical data for several shell types are implemented. You can also save your own shell types. Find more
information with the Help button.
If you already know the geometrical dimensions of the shell, for example if you want to recalculate an existing
heat exchanger, you can enter the data here (outside diameter, wall thickness, distance of baffles).
In most cases you do not know the outside diameter of the shell when you start the design of a heat
exchanger. Select Free input / Design in these cases. The program chooses a suitable shell from its list.
The main criterion is the coil radius.

Coil Type
The coil type determines the construction type of the heat exchanger. This is how the flow is guided around the
coil.
We choose:

Coil with Displacement Cylinder.

Visual COIL

Enter the data you know! COIL is not limited to specific inputs.
In our example we know the tube side inlet temperature, outlet temperature and the volume flow. The shell
side mass flow or volume flow is calculated by the heat balance. You could also enter the absolute thermal
performance or the two inlet temperatures and the two mass flows / volume flows. The program would then
calculate the two outlet temperatures.

Confirm with OK. The calculation sttarts and the program switches to the COIL input mask.

TIP: Conversion of units

A click on the unit or a double click on the input field the
conversion of units is activated.
Enter the values in the unit you have at hand; e.g.,
temperature in F. The value is immediately converted in
all other displayed units. The unit with the activated
checkbox is displayed on the mask and will be used for
the documentation.
Please confirm your input with 'ENTER' or use the OK
button.

COIL Input Mask

The heat exchanger has been
calculated. The calculated and the
entered values are now entered
into the COIL input mask.
Now you have to specify the type of
oil.

The program chose a shell with the

dimensions of 323,9 x 7,1 mm
The coil diameter has been
adjusted to meet the requirement of
having a 12 mm distance from shell
to coil and coil to cylinder.

You can now optimize the heat

exchanger by entering a smaller
Coil-shell distance or coil-cylinder
distance.

To obtain some reserve for the

heat transfer area, we enter a final
number of windings of 22.

The design is completed by

entering the tube side connection
arrangement (2-axial) and the shell
side nozzles (43.1 mm)

Coaxial Tube Heat Exchanger (coiled

double-pipe) in COIL
Calculation example of a coaxial tube heat exchanger with
the COIL program
The entries for the calculation of a coaxial tube heat exchanger are done in the mask 'Basic data selection'.

This mask is the first mask to appear after program start. By selecting the option Coaxial tube heat
exchanger' in the Heat exchanger type field, the calculation is initialized.
There are several tubes and pipes in the database which can be selected in the selection boxes
'Internal tubes' and External tubes. The data of these tubes (outside diameter and wall thickness) can be
saved.
If you want to use tubes which are not listed in the selection box, you can overwrite the values for outside
diameter and wall thickness directly in the fields. You can change the values at a later time in the COIL mask
as well.
Select the tube-side and shell-side media and confirm your selection by pressing 'OK'. The next mask 'Visual
COIL' is displayed.
In this mask you may enter your system data for the tube-side and shell-side media. Confirm your entries with
'OK'. The program switches to the COIL input mask.

Calculation Example

-6-

Here you may complete or correct your system data (pressure, temperature, mass flow).

Calculation Example

-7-

If your system data are complete, the calculation is started and the required tube length is calculated.
>> Enter the final tube length which is the tube length of the manufactured heat exchanger. The exchanger
is recalculated with this tube length.
Please adjust the final bundle length to the required bundle length. The difference between required and final
bundle length is the Overdesign.
Alternatively you might enter the final heat exchanger area, the final number of windings or the final total coil
length (height of the coil).
