DIFFERENCE IN THE USAGE OF FORMALIN 10% AND POVIDONEIODINE 2,5% AS EMBALMING FLUID ON THE DEGREE OF

norvegicus) WISTAR STRAIN AFTER 0-6 HOURS OF DEATH

Embalming has been practiced by the ancient Egyptians for
thousand years for religious and social purposes. In the beginning,
embalming only performed for the kings because of long and expensive
procedures. And in times, embalming techniques become easier and
available for almost everyone. Embalming is the treatment of dead bodies
to inhibit the postmortem changes by providing embalming fluid so the
dead bodies constantly in lasting state for several times. Antiseptic and
disinfectant solution can be given to the bodies to stop the decay process
by modifying tissues into stable and resistant form to decay agents.
Formaldehyde and povidone-iodine is one example of several types of
antiseptics and disinfectants.
The aim of this study was to know about the differences in the
usage of formalin 10% and povidone-iodine 2.5% as embalming fluid on
the degree of postmortem changes of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus)
Wistar strain after 0-6 hours of death.
This laboratory experimental study using post test only control
group design method. Experimental animal using 16 male rats Rattus
norvegicus Wistar strain that randomly divided into 2 groups, the
positive control group was given formalin 10% and the treatment group
was given povidone-iodine 2.5% after 0-6 hours of death. Furthermore, the
degree of postmortem changes observed in each group for 4 days and the
data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test.
Result of statistical analysis Mann-Whitney showed significancy
value of 0.000 (p <0.05) which means there are significant differences in
the usage of formalin 10% and povidone-iodine 2.5% as embalming fluid
on the degree of postmortem changes of male white rats (Rattus
norvegicus) Wistar strain after 0-6 hours of death.
Conclusion of this study showed that giving formalin 10% can inhibit
the process of postmortem changes in experimental animals longer than
giving povidone-iodine 2.5%.
