1. Scope
This General Specification is supplementing the GS EP PLR 104 when the ISO 13623 is the
selected Prime Reference for the design of an onshore pipeline system.
Any contradictions between the GS EP PLR 104 and the ISO 13623 that have not been treated
in the present General Specification shall be treated at the commencement of the design and
the resolutions shall be approved by Company.

3. Amendments to the ISO 13623 - for onshore pipeline sections

3.1 General
Where conveyed fluids are overwhelmingly CO2, recommended practice DNV-RP-J202 shall be
applied and used in conjunction with the APR.

3.2 Amendments to 3.1.12 - MAOP

The GS EP PLR 104 specifies a set of pressure levels that shall be matched together with those
reflected in the Applicable Prime Reference, being the ISO 13623 in the frame of the present
General Specification.
The ISO 13623 indicates that the Incidental Pressure can exceed the MAOP by less than 10%
but does not precise whether the Incidental Pressure can exceed the Design Pressure.
The present General Specification understands that the Incidental Pressure as per the
ISO 13623 matches the Abnormal Pressure as specified in the GS EP PLR 104.
As a consequence, the Design Pressure as per the ISO 13623 matches that of the
GS EP PLR 104 but as soon as the Abnormal/Incidental Pressure exceeds the Design
Pressure, then an overpressure protection system shall be engineered.
The meaning of the MAOP as per the GS EP PLR 104 differs from that of the ISO 13623 in the
sense that it is associated to a post-design check, based on the set wall thickness rather than
on the theoretical one, by using the reverse hoop stress formulation, as expressed hereunder:

MAOP = p id = p od +

2.t set .Fh . y

D o t set

where:
tset is the selected wall thickness (i.e. API) less the
fabrication tolerance and the corrosion allowance.

On doing this, it shall be checked that the set MAOP:

Shall not generate an unacceptable loading in any required combination with the other
loads
Shall always remain below the Incidental/Abnormal Pressure
Once the MAOP is specified, then this shall be the reference pressure to derive the
hydrotest and leak test pressures.

3.3 Amendments to 3.1.23 - SMYS

The SMYS (y) addressed by the ISO 13623 is the transverse value.
In some circumstances - such as for reeled pipe and for pipelaying stress analysis - the
longitudinal one may be required.
De-rating for wall thicknesses above 31.8 mm (1"1/4) and temperatures above 50C is
mandatory and information shall be provided in a first approach by the selected pipe suppliers.

3.4 Amendments to 5.1 - System definition

Battery limits shall be defined as GS EP PLR 104.

3.5 Amendments to 5.3 - Hydraulic analysis

On performing the hydraulic analysis, care shall be taken neither to vaporise liquids at highest
points of the route nor to exceed receiving pressure capabilities at the host arrival point.

3.6 Amendments to 5.4 - Overpressure

When assessing the effects from an over pressure, the incidental/accidental pressure shall be
determined further to a process study combined with an hydraulic analysis, and in compliance
with the above section 3.1.
In a first approach, an overpressure equal to 1.1 times the design pressure can be retained refer also to 6.3.2.2 of the ISO 13623.

3.7 Amendments to 6.1 - Design principles

Reliability-based limit state design is at present time not permitted by Company for onshore
pipelines and risers designed under the ISO 13623.

3.8 Amendments to 6.3.2.2 - Temperature

The minimum temperature reached further to an anticipated blowdown shall be calculated.
The method (thermodynamic equations and software) used for this calculation and the
calculation itself shall be approved by Company.
In some circumstances, a supplementary temperature margin may be required by Company.

3.9 Amendments to 6.4.2.2 - Yielding

Longitudinal straining is limited to 2%. Consequences on material characteristics are to be
determined and presented to Company for acceptance, but this does not address straining
induced during reeling operation.

3.10 Amendments to 6.4.2.4 - Fatigue

Selected fatigue curves shall be approved by Company.

3.11 Amendments to 6.4.2.5 - Ovality

Pipes geometrical characteristics retained for calculations shall be as per the relevant Total
General Specifications related to linepipe fabrication.

3.12 Amendments to 6.6 - Pipeline Spanning

Any submerged pipeline spanning shall be evaluated as per GS EP PLR 100.

3.13 Amendments to 6.7.3 and to 11 - Testing

The pressure level shall be equal to the strength test pressure, which shall also be read in the
light of above section 3.1 (see also further section 3.20).
The duration of the pressure tests shall not be less than 24 h.

3.14 Amendments to 6.8.2.1 - Pipeline on land

Pipeline depth of burial shall be as GS EP PLR 403.

3.15 Amendments to 6.9 - Crossings

Land crossings arrangements shall be as per GS EP PLR 403.

3.16 Amendments to 6.9.6 - Pipe bridge crossings

Location classes for bridge crossings shall be defined by the most constraining density of
population of adjacent areas.

3.17 Amendments to 6.9.7 - Sleeved crossings

Sleeved crossings shall be approved by Company Corrosion specialist.

3.18 Amendments to 6.11 - Section isolation valves

In addition to the ISO 13623 requirements, and in the absence of Local Regulations,
sectionalising valves onshore shall be located:
Every 48 km on location class 1
Every 32 km on location class 2
Every 16 km on location class 3
Every 8 km on location class 4 and 5.
However, requirements for such valves and for their spacing may be challenged by
appropriated studies (risk analysis, operability, performances, safety, security, overall reliability,
etc.).

3.19 Amendments to 6.14 - Fabricated Components

Welded branch connections and any other pipeline items shall have a life duration at least
equal to the design life duration of the pipeline.
Welding shall be performed as per GS EP PLR 420 or GS EP PLR 421, as applicable.

3.20 Amendments to 13.4.6 - Testing of modified pipelines

When leak tests are required, leak tests of 8 hours at 1.1xMAOP have to be considered.

3.21 Amendments to Annex B

The location class of pipelines arriving within a permanently staffed and fenced facility shall
adopt:
The location class 3, by default
Or the class 4 or 5 if the adjacent areas are in class 4 or 5.
For host facilities at the battery limits the location class shall be given by the host.
