ENG111 Critical Reading and Writing I
This class proved to be very beneficial; the assignments allowed me to take a
deeper look at my writing styles such as rhetorical, analytical and critical thinking. The
segment of the class that I really identified with was the shitty first draft process. My
writing process has not changed since the beginning of the course but my attention to
content certainly has changed. I still continue to write freely followed by editing. I did
attempt to change my process by using a list which contained pertinent points; I then
methodically wrote on each point and simultaneously included supporting research and
edited as I went along. This unfortunately is not the writing style that I would prefer and I
have concluded that perhaps my biased opinion is also a factor in why I fail to embrace
this option.
The analytical thinking was my preference because of my work requirements - business
documents with process development and directives. I was (in my opinion), a bit better
at rhetorical writing than I have been in previous classes. The writing techniques
learned in this class and throughout my college experience has positively impacted my
writing. I am now more thorough and I can infer that although I prefer analytical and the
persuasive techniques I welcome the challenge of the other styles.
Not only have I reviewed my efforts but I also evaluated the content of my
submitted assignments. To date, I have to say that the grades received were fair. I could
sit here and develop an argument on why I should get that extra percentage point but if I
use analytical thinking here the effort would not justify the reward. The final grade would
not change significant enough to benefit me for a higher grade. I do appreciate the
feedback on the papers and even though the feedback is not done in a time that
correlates with my timeline, it is returned well within a time frame that allows for reviews
to be done and resubmitted. As a consequence, I believe that I have done enough work
to warrant either an A or an A- grade for this course.
I specifically recall in the assignment Developing an Argument, that it took a while to
determine which of the readings would work well together - I veered toward choosing
two titles that steered in a similar direction but had an independent approach I thought
they would provide a challenging contrasting comparison. These comparisons made me
question whether or not the population chosen could be compared to each other as well
as if I could make a fair argument. That was the fun part of this class.
