The objective of this document is to establish a database that represents the
status quo in the following fields:

Used sources were the several editions of the aircraft compendium Jane's All
the World's Aircraft and several sources on the internet.

most important categories are displayed in the following table to keep this
document clearly arranged. The complete data base contains where available

To evaluate the current situation of seaplane aviation, the first step of

processing the data is to create a timeline of aircraft designed and
manufactured (Figure 2-1). It is clearly to be seen, that the height of the
seaplanes and amphibians was the pre-World War 2 era. Since then the
manufactured aircraft stay on a constant low level. The peak beginning in the
early nineteen thirties can hence be explained with the missions of the aircraft
of that era in the data base. They include specifically maritime military tasks like
coastal defence, and combat with airships and submarines. Taking a look at all
the operations performed reconnaissance seems to be the most important one
followed by passenger transport (Figure 2-2). Nowadays, the operations are
mainly commercially oriented and include operations for tourism, sports, fire
fighting, flight training and education as well as passenger transport. To get a
clearer view on todays applications for seaplanes, the online survey for
operators was started within FUSETRA.

Categorizing the aircraft by EASAs certification classes, as done in Figure 2-3,

shows that most of the aircraft are below 5670 kg and belong to CS-23.

4 Operators
From internet recherche, a list of 327 seaplane operators worldwide was
gathered. The information in the complete list that is available electronically
contains the complete postal address, the web address, phone, fax and email
contact data as well as GPS coordinates for the headquarters.
The worldwide distribution of seaplane operators very impressively shows the
dominance of North America. Almost half of all operators are based in the
United States, together with Canada its even 80%.

Summarizing the results, it seems to be clear that seaplane operation and

manufacturing is well established in North America. In Europe the seaplane
transport system seems to be sustained by enthusiasts. The reasons for this will
be investigated in the FUSETRA project.
One first step is the online survey that is necessary to get reliable data about
operators. During the search for data, it became obvious that due to the small
size of many companies and the zenith of seaplane aviation almost 60 years
ago already, data is very hard to find and the help of operators is necessary.
