andsidewalks,buttheyarenotdiscussedinthisguide.DOJs2010ADAStandardsrequirecurbrampsat
newlyconstructedoralteredstreets,highways,andstreetlevelpedestrianwalkwaystoprovideanaccessible
routeforpedestriansatintersections(28CFR35.151(i)).

CurbRampsatIntersections
Curbrampsatmarkedcrossingsmustbewhollycontainedwithinthecrosswalk,excludingsideflares.The
Standardsdonotrequirecrossingstobemarkedoraddresshowtheyaretobemarked,butpublicstreet
crossingsareaddressedbytheManualonUniformTrafficControlDevices(MUTCD)forStreetsandHighways.

Curbrampsmustbeorientedsothatthegradebreakisperpendiculartothecurbrampruntoensurea
smoothtransitiontostreets,includingatcornerswithawideradius.Thecurbrampopeningcanbealigned
withthecurbline(left)ormoredirectionallyorientedtothecrosswalk(right).

Recommendations:Perpendicularcurbrampsarepreferredoverdiagonalcurbramps.Unlesstheradius
islargeenough,itcanbedifficulttolocatetheclearspaceatthebottomofdiagonalcurbrampsthatis
outsideactivetrafficlanes.Theorientationalsocanmisleadpeoplewithvisionimpairmentswhouse
curbslopesasacuetocrossings.
