Within days of her election as Conservative

Party Leader and taking over as Prime
Minister, Conor visited Theresa May in 10
Downing Street (pictured left).

WELCOMES NEW
PRIME MINISTER

He congratulated her and expressed his

support for her in securing the best possible
deal in the UKs withdrawal from the European
Union following the result of the June 23rd
referendum.

On her first day as PM, Theresa May set out

her vision, As we leave the European Union,
we will forge a bold, new, positive role for
ourselves in the world. We will make Britain a
country that works not for a privileged few but
for every one of us. That will be the mission
of the Government I lead, and together we will
build a better Britain.

The Prime Minister has appointed Conor to the

job of Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to
the Secretary of State for Business, Energy
and Industrial Strategy, the Rt Hon Greg Clark
MP.

ANY HOSPITAL CHANGE MUST BRING

I will not recommend

anything to my constituents
that I do not feel gives them
at least the same, if not better,
access to medical services
than they would receive if
no change was made.

Conor Burns MP has pledged

to protect local people from
any changes to local hospitals
that do not deliver at least the
same, if not better, access to
medical services for patients.

This call comes following

proposals from the Dorset
NHS Clinical Commissioning
Group (CCG) to reconfigure
"major emergency hospital
care".
Conor is seeking
urgent information from the
CCG and visiting the Royal

Hospitals to discuss in more
detail what they see as the
implications of the proposals.

Reconfiguration could also be

very costly, maybe into
hundreds of millions of
pounds, and Conor wants
clear answers on this from
the CCG. At a time when the
Government is spending an
extra 10 billion a year on the
NHS, that money should go to
patient care, not bureaucracy.

Commenting, Conor said, I

will not recommend anything

SCHOOLS AS A
KEY PART OF THE
LOCAL ECONOMY

This year, Conor welcomed the International

Education Forum to Bournemouth to discuss
business opportunities for international
schools and the towns hospitality industry.
Bournemouth is, after London, the largest
centre of language schools in the UK.

The IEF is a professional association, formed

in 2015, which includes many of the two
towns accredited language schools, an
independent boarding school, Bournemouth
University, Bournemouth Arts University,

Guardianships
and
Bournemouth and Poole College. The
shared goal of its members is to promote

Figures released by the Office of
National Statistics show that
between July and September
2016, the British economy grew
by 0.5%, meaning our economy
has grown by over 1.5% in 2016.

New employment statistics also

show that with 31.77 million
people in work, employment
remains at a record high of
74.5%, while unemployment
stands at 4.9%. This is the
lowest for over a decade.

more jobs for people in Britain.

BOURNEMOUTH TO
LEAD UK ON 5G TECH
Bournemouth and Poole as a world class
centre for excellence in international
education and to represent members on
various external committees.

Conor said, I have long recognised the value

of the international education sector to
Bournemouth and Poole - and I am acutely
aware of the problems and issues that the
sector faces and how competitive it is. The
international education sector brings much
vibrancy, culture and internationalism to
Bournemouth and Poole and is certainly
something for us to be very proud of.

The government wants Bournemouth to play a key

part in making the UK a world leader in the next
generation of mobile technology. Bournemouth
could be the first place in the country to try 5G
mobile technology. Although the exact nature of 5G
has not yet been defined, it would mean much faster
speeds and increased capacity by 2020.

Commenting Conor said, It potentially gives a turbocharge to our offer in terms of attracting companies
to look at Bournemouth for start-ups and relocating
businesses to Bournemouth. I was pleased to be in
the Treasury team when the former Chancellor
announced this.

MAKING
A SUCCESS
OF BREXIT
Having campaigned for Britain to leave the
European Union in Junes referendum,
Conor welcomed the fact that both
Bournemouth and Poole backed Brexit at
the ballot box.

Bournemouth residents chose Brexit, with

50,453 against 41,473 for remain, whilst
in Poole, leave won an even bigger
mandate, with 35,741 votes to remain and
49,707 for leave.

Conor commented, I know there were

patriotic people on both sides and I was
clear in advance that the result would
reflect the collective wisdom of the British
people. We have a clear instruction from
the people. I absolutely support the new
Prime Minister and her Government in
negotiating our exit - and more importantly
building those trade deals with the rest of
the world that will see Britain prosper for
decades to come. Of course there will be
challenges but great opportunities as well.
Now the referendum is behind us we must
come together to do the best by our
country.

With Grammar Schools back on
the agenda, Conor Burns MP
has said there is definitely a
place for them in our education
system - but they need to go
back to the founding principle of
helping children from poorer
backgrounds.

Dorset is one of the few places

left in the UK where grammar
schools are still part of the
offer.
In
education
Bournemouth and Poole there
are four grammar schools Bournemouth
School,
Bournemouth School for Girls,
Poole Grammar and Parkstone
Grammar School.

Speaking to the Bournemouth

Echo, Conor said, "I am
concerned that they are not
being used for the purpose they
were created for - which is to
give children from poorer
backgrounds a better chance in
life. When asking some young
people in our local grammar
schools where they would have

criteria for 2018 in order to
reflect the founding principles of

precedence will first be given to
Bournemouth children, followed
by looked after children and then
those children in receipt of pupil
premium.

they need to be used correctly
and I would like to see the rest of
the country following the lead
that Bournemouth has set."
