Chihuly Flowers

Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Duration of the lesson: 2- Half hour

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


The purpose of this lesson is to break up student lessons with a short, but fun lesson
inspired by Dale Chihulys glass sculptures. The other theme of this project is to create
something as a collaborative piece, one that the entire school can see as created by the
3rd grade artists

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will design and create Chihuly inspired flower made of recycled plastic
bottles.
2. Students will practice how to cut plastic in a safe way.
3. Students will use creativity skills in deciding what colors they want and how to
shape the petals.
4. Students will practice their coloring skills by drawing on the petals using
colored sharpies.
5. Students will consider the elements of shape and color in this lesson and the
class will discuss the repetition of the piece as the flowers are assembled and
displayed together.

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Plastic Bottles
2. Sharpies
3. Scissors
4. Hot Glue
5. Foam core

PROCEDURE
Introduction/ Motivation: Dale Chihuly Video:________________________________
Instructional Strategies:

Day 1:

-Watch the Dale Chihuly video


-Think-pair-share: What does his artwork remind you of?
- How does he create his artwork?
-Can artists work in teams? Why
-Discuss what a collaborative piece is.
- Demonstrate the first step: Remove the wrapper and cap
-Have students remove the wrapper and cap from their bottle
-Demonstrate how to cut the bottle in half
-Students cut the bottle in half
- Demonstrate how to draw lines with the sharpie, and then cut safely
with scissors.

- Students finish preparing their chihuly flower


- Once students finish their flower, demonstrate how they can add and
layer colors utilizing colored sharpies. Goal: Cover all of the plastic.

-Any free time can be filled by: Reading, drawing in their sketchbook,
finishing their illusion hand, or helping a friend quietly.

ACCOMMODATIONS / MODIFICATIONS

Extension and Enrichment:

For gifted and talented students, I will encourage them to take their time in really
considering each step of the process and how they can master the skill by practicing
and working hard.
Additional supports:

For students on an IEP or 504 I will help them by checking in more often and
demonstrating for them 1:1 any ideas or concepts they are struggling with.
