Abstract Proceedings of the 2016 IEEE Students Technology Symposium

30 September - 02 October 2016, IIT Kharagpur

About the Symposium

The IEEE Students Technology Symposium is an annual event conceptualized by IEEE Kharagpur
Section and IEEE Student Branch, IIT Kharagpur. The 2016 IEEE Students Technology
Symposium (IEEE TechSym 2016) is the fourth edition of this event and is being held at the lush
green and youthful campus of IIT Kharagpur, India. Conceptualized as an event for nurturing the
talent of students and young professionals, it has matured to a prominently visible and cited podium
for students and young professionals. This version of the symposium hosts professionally managed
events consisting of oral and poster sessions showcasing original contributions from students and
young professionals, with subsequent publications through IEEEXploreTM Digital Library.
IEEE TechSym 2016 also provides ample opportunities for learning from veterans of the trade
through Plenary and Keynote Sessions, Workshops, and Tutorials held in parallel through the period
of the symposium from 30 Sep. - 02 Oct. 2016.
The symposium had received a total of 283 submissions submitted to 8 regular tracks till the extended
deadline which closed on 31st May, 2016. A total of 40 Area Chairs along with 334 Reviewers
worldwide participated in the review process during 31 May - 8 August, 2016. Each of the papers was
reviewed by the Area Chairs and forwarded to Reviewers if found compliant with Editorial Policies.
The Area Chairs prepared consolidated reports for each of the papers assigned to them based on the
comments of the Reviewers and using their own judgment of the work. The final decision to Accept
or Reject the manuscripts was taken at a meeting of the Technical Program Committee in consultation
with the Advisory Committee held at IIT Kharagpur during 25th July - 05 August, 2016. Some of the
papers were discussed at length and in-depth before the final decision was arrived at. The doubleblinded review process was rigorous and without quotas or expectations on the numbers of papers.
Finally, 28 papers were selected for Oral Presentation, and 34 papers were selected for Poster Session
with an acceptance rate of 21.9% (acceptance rates for the Oral and Poster Sessions were 9.9% and
12% respectively). We had also received 13 Late Breaking Research papers of which 6 were accepted
for presentation as posters.
We wish you a pleasant stay and hope you enjoy IIT Kharagpur during the Symposium.
Cheers
Technical Program Chair

A Fuzzy Based Movement Control of an Intelligent Wheelchair Using Brain

Signals from Motor Imagery
Tapan Das, Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, India
Priyanka Nath, Jamini Das, Abdur Rohman*, Assam Kaziranga University, India
This paper explores the feasibility of controlling a wheelchair by means of EEG signals and Fuzzy Logic
control. FIS GUI in MATLAB & Simulink is used to achieve the objective. Brain signals used are
extracted by EEG electrodes employed over the motor imagery cortex of the brain. The Motor Imagery is
the imaginary activities which are responsible for governing the left and the right hand movements. These
signals are utilized for controlling the wheelchair. A Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is used for
upholding the interface between the brain and the machine. The EEG signals are processed for extraction
and classification carrying different relevant information and then given to the Fuzzy Logic controller.
The inputs to the controller are forward, backward, left, right and a stop signal to prevent any further
movement of the wheelchair. The outputs are then nourished to the motor which are responsible for
different movements of the chair. Some sets of rules are defined between the input and the output to
obtain the desired performance. The proposed system using Fuzzy Logic toolbox and the surface graphs
obtained as an outcome is expected to contribute to the desired performance.

Emotion Recognition from Audio-Visual Data Using Rule Based Decision

Level Fusion
Subhasmita Sahoo*, Aurobinda Routray
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Emotion recognition systems aim at identifying emotions of human subjects from underlying data with
acceptable accuracy. Audio and visual signals, being the primary modalities of human emotion perception,
have attained the most attention in developing intelligent systems for natural interaction. The emotion
recognition system must automatically identify the human emotional states from his or her voice and
facial image, unaffected by all possible constraints. In this work, an audio-visual emotion recognition
system has been developed that uses fusion of both the modalities at the decision level. At first, separate
emotion recognition systems that use speech and facial expressions were developed and tested separately.
The speech emotion recognition system was tested on two standard speech emotion databases: Berlin
EMODB database and Assamese database. The efficiency of visual emotion recognition system was
analyzed using the eNTREFACE'05 database. Then a decision rule was set for fusion of both audio and

Detection of Electrocorticography Based Motor Imagery Movements Using

Continuous Wavelet Transform
Md. Redwan Islam*, Umme Fatema Kona, Mohammed Imamul Hassan Bhuiyan, Syed Khairul Bashar
Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh
Recently electrocorticography (ECoG) has emerged as a potential tool for Brain Computer Interfacing
applications. In this paper, a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) based method is proposed for
classifying ECoG motor imagery signals corresponding to left pinky and tongue movement. The total
experiment is carried out with the publicly available benchmark BCI competition III, data set I. The L2
norms of the CWT coefficients obtained from ECoG signals are shown to be separable for the two
classes of motor imagery signals. Then the L2 norm based features are subjected to principal component
analysis, yielding a feature set with lower dimension. Among various types of classifiers used, support
vector machine based classifiers have been shown to provide maximum accuracy of 92% which is shown
to be better than several existing techniques. In addition, unlike most of the existing methods, our
proposed method involves no pre-processing and thus can have better potential for practical
implementation while requiring much lower computational time in extracting the features.

A Proficient Chaos Based Security Algorithm for Emergency Response in

WBAN System
Saiyma Fatima Raza*, Naveen Cheggoju, Vishal Satpute, Avinash Keskar
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, India
E-healthcare is emerging as a new technology for monitoring vital body parameters of patient having
chronic disease or during disaster. Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is one such technology that is
improving the quality of health care. WBAN has personal patient data. Attackers can access this data
from Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs) or from the wireless channel between nodes and server; this
requires efficient security protocol for providing data security. In case of emergency, the vital parameters
should be easily accessed by the doctors or the paramedic. Stringent authentication and security criterias
makes it difficult to access the data during emergency, which may prove to be disastrous for the patient.
This paper proposes a new approach for data security in wireless channel specifically during emergency
conditions. WBAN uses Advanced Encryption Standard-128 (AES-128) cipher which requires substantial
time for encryption which may be fatal in case of emergencies. Security mechanism for sensor nodes
should be lightweight due to the area and resource constraints. The proposed method uses chaos based
scrambling in case of emergency, which is lightweight with respect to AES and also requires very less
processing time which is desired in emergencies.

Selection of Path and Wavelength for Setting up a Free Space Optical Link
Krishna Kanth Yenumula*, Sumanta Gupta, Sudhan Majhi
Indian Institute of Technology Patna, India
In this paper, we investigate how to determine the optimal path and the wavelength for setting up a free
space optical (FSO) link at our college campus. We consider serial relay assisted FSO system, employing
both decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward modes. We consider an aggregated channel model
that considers both path-loss and turbulence induced log-normal fading. We derive outage probability for
the relaying scheme under consideration and then find outage probability of all the available paths at
different wavelengths to determine the optimal path and the wavelength.

Investigation of Surface Wave Modes on Ungrounded Electrically Thick

Ceramic Alumina Substrate at 60GHz
Anushruti Jaiswal*, Mahesh Abegaonkar, Shiban K. Koul
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India
Propagation of surface waves modes on ungrounded dielectric slab of ceramic alumina with r= 9.8 and
635 m of electrically thick height at 60GHz is studied. An approximate graphical technique is
implemented to determine the unknown propagation constants kx and , to achieve a solution for
Helmholtz wave equations, for each TE and TM modes. It also indeed provides a physical insight of
existing no. of modes and their dependence on permittivity and height of substrate. Cut-off frequency for
all propagating modes is calculated and dispersion graph with propagation constant is plotted. A CPW fed
monopole antenna, designed and fabricated at 60GHz, is found to be affected by the presence of surface
wave modes on its radiation characteristics. A tilt of 40 is found in E-plane radiation pattern which
certainly evidence the presence of surface wave modes at 60GHz.

A microstrip-line fed slot antenna with an open ended stub in the top middle inner edge of the square
shaped slotted ground plane is presented in this paper. The antenna is reasonably compact in nature
(3030 mm2) with two resonating frequencies at 1.81 GHz and 5.22 GHz, and these two bands are
operating for the DCS1800/PCS1900 and wireless LAN application. The percentage bandwidths of both
the resonance bands are 10.00 and 11.85 respectively. The gain varies in the range of 1.71 dBi to 1.89 dBi
and 3.56 dBi to 3.72 dBi in the band of 1.81 GHz and 5.22 GHz respectively, which are enough for the
operation of DCS1800/PCS1900 and WLAN system. This proposed antenna show a consistent co-polar
and allowable cross-polar radiation patterns in the desired bands of frequencies.

No reference image quality assessment for images degraded by color

quantization in HSV Space
Kanjar De*, Masilamani V
Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing, Kancheepuram, India
Image quality assessment is a very important and challenging task for many image processing applications.
The task of quality assessment of an image can be done either with the help of a reference image of the
same scene or blindly without any reference image. No-reference image quality assessment algorithms
specic to a particular type of distortion are very popular for different image processing applications.
Color quantization is a technique to reduce the number of unique colors in the image but excessive color
quantization can reduce the visual quality of images. In this paper, we propose a no- reference image
quality measure specic to quality assessment color quantized images and color quantized images with
dither. The results are validated using a subset of the standard TID2013 image quality dataset for
validating it in accordance with the human visual system.

Retinal Layer Delineation through Learning of Tissue Photon Interaction in

Optical Coherence Tomography

Sambuddha Ghosh, Calcutta National Medical College, India
Debjani Chakraborty, Jyotirmoy Chatterjee, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely used in Ophthalmology for visualizing retinal layers and
cornea width profiles which are indexed to various pathologies. Image processing algorithms have been
deployed to automatically delineate various layers for autonomous width profiles computation. Classical
OCT segmentation algorithms are anchored around gradient and its derivatives. Such pixel information
can vary from subject to subject so prior approximations of different layers are imposed in the name of
regularization. Regularization restrains the generalization capability of the model which is crucial for
segmentation in pathological subjects. The presented approach aims to model signal interactions with a
tissue type through back scattered signal characteristics. During prediction phase, given an unknown
interaction, the model estimates the probability of signal being backscattered from a tissue type. Sensor's
ballistic models are employed to estimate the uncompressed signal statistics. These models have been
experimented and evaluated on 5000 AMD (age-related macular degeneration) and 5000 normal B-scans
from Duke OCT dataset. With two percent training data the delineation results are comparable to graph

Simultaneous Reconstruction and Restoration of Sparsely Sampled Optical

Coherence Tomography Image through Learning Separable Filters for Deep
Architectures
Sri Phani Krishna Karri*, Niladri Garai, Debaleena Nawn, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Sambuddha Ghosh, Calcutta National Medical College, India
Debjani Chakraborty, Jyotirmoy Chatterjee, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is widely employed across ophthalmology
practices for visual investigation of live tissues. The involuntary movements of subjects frequently infuse
motion artifacts to SD-OCT images. Sub-sampling of signals is introduced in imaging protocol to avoid
such artifacts which causes fall in spatial resolution and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). Sparse coding
(SC) is opted for restoration and rectification of complete signals from sparse samples through
constructing complete and sparse space dictionaries independently. Convolutional neural networks
(CNN) can be casted as SC for jointly learning dictionaries resulting less number of CNN filters
(equivalence of SC dictionaries) to be trained. The proposed approach extends the separable filters to
CNN through architectural constrain. This results in a parallel architecture and reduced number of
parameters without compromising on performance. The approach scaled down trainable parameters by
46% with a trade-off of 0.108 PSNR during training and 0.107 PSNR during testing in comparison to
conventional CNN.

Fingerprint Classification Using Crease Features

Nitesh Chauhan, Mayank Soni, Vijay Anand*, Vivek Kanhangad
Indian Institute of Technology Indore, India
Existing fingerprint classification techniques make use of Level-1 or Level-2 features or their combination
for fingerprint classification. On the other hand, Level-3 features have not been explored much for
fingerprint classification. Specifically, the use of crease for fingerprint classification does not exist in the
literature. In this work, we explore the use of crease features for fingerprint classification. Experiments
are performed on the publicly available Hong Kong PolyU high-resolution fingerprint database DBII.
Our experimental results are very encouraging and indicate that creases have huge potential to improve
the performance of fingerprint classification.

A Framework for Analyzing Community Detection Algorithms

Anupam Biswas*, Bhaskar Biswas
Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India
Evaluation of community detection algorithms is very important to ensure both accuracy and quality of
identified communities. Measuring quality incorporates edges, while measuring accuracy involves node
labels. Due to this fundamental difference between accuracy and quality, often the evaluation process
confronts with the issues such as trade-off between the two. In addition, real world networks such as
social networks are of unknown structure and complex. Accuracy of communities detected with any
algorithm for these networks cannot be measured due to unavailability of ground truth. In such cases, the
algorithms are certainly more likely to predict accurate communities that show higher inclination towards
accuracy in the networks where ground truth are available. In this paper, a framework is proposed to
analyze Relative Inclination Towards accuracy (RITA) of a set of community detection algorithms. The
RITA analysis gives an intuition about how likely an algorithm would produce accurate communities in
the networks where ground truth is not available. Moreover, the RITA analysis overcomes trade-off
between accuracy and quality by incorporating both into a common platform. Results on variety of
networks show the competency of proposed framework in dealing with the trade-off during analysis.

A Nonlinear Fuzzy PID Controller via Algebraic Product AND-Maximum

OR-Height Defuzzification
Arun N K *, Murali Mohan Bosukonda, Ritu Raj
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
This paper reveals a new mathematical model of the simplest fuzzy PID controller which employs two
fuzzy sets (negative and positive) on each of the three input variables (error, change in error and double
change in error) and four fuzzy sets (-2, -1, +1, +2) on the output variable (incremental control). L type, Gamma - type and Pi - type membership functions are considered in fuzzification process of input
and output variables. Controller modeling is done via algebraic product AND operator-maximum OR
operator-Height (Ht) defuzzification process combination. The new model obtained in this manner turns
out to be nonlinear, and its properties are studied.

Asymmetrical Cascaded Multilevel Inverter with Single DC Source Using

High Frequency Resonant Converter
Puspendu Jana, Sumit Chattopadhyay, Prabodh Bajpai, C Chakraborty
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India.
An alternative implementation of asymmetric cascaded H-bridge (ACHB) inverter is presented in this
work. The presented ACHB inverter is using a single DC source. The main bridge is directly connected to
the DC source (such as, battery, fuel cell or photovoltaic array). And the auxiliary bridges are fed by
isolated series resonant converter (SRC). Voltage of the auxiliary bridge is balanced by controlling the
switches of SRC. The SRC is operated in lagging p.f. mode to reduce switching losses. A simple controller
has been used to control the SRC converter. The proposed topology is simulated in Matlab/Simulink
environment to verify the performance of the system.

Cascaded Sliding Mode Control for Position Control of a Ball in a Ball and
Plate System
Prasanta Roy*, Soumitra Acharjee, Arjun Ram, Arindam Das, Tanmoy Sen, Binoy Roy
National Institute of Technology Silchar, India
Ball and Plate system is a well-known benchmark to test control strategies because of its multivariable
nonlinear coupled dynamics, open loop instability and under actuation. Moreover, presence of parameter
uncertainty and external disturbance makes it further challenging and interesting. This calls for a robust
controller which not only stabilises the ball on the plate but also makes the ball follow a predefined path
in presence of external disturbances. A Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) could be one of the possible
choices. In this paper a Cascaded SMC is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is tested
through simulation studies by making the ball follow circular and square shaped trajectories. Effect of
undesirable phenomenon of chattering associated with SMC is also found within the satisfactory limit.

This paper presents a study of improvement in stability in a single machine connected to infinite bus
(SMIB) power system by using static compensator (STATCOM). The gains of Proportional-IntegralDerivative (PID) controller in STATCOM are being optimized by heuristic technique based on Particle
swarm optimization (PSO). Further, Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) as an alternative heuristic
method is also applied to select optimal gains of PID controller. The performance of STATCOM with
the above soft-computing techniques are studied and compared with the conventional PID controller
under various scenarios. The simulation results are accompanied with performance indices based
quantitative analysis. The analysis clearly signifies the robustness of the new scheme in terms of stability
and voltage regulation when compared with conventional PID.

Performance of a New Brushless Synchronous Generator with an

Embedded Induction Machine to Regulate Excitation
Arijit Das, Yalla Tirumala Rao, Saptarshi Basak, C Chakraborty
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Brushless generators are on demand due to maintenance free operation. This is most preferred in safety
critical systems like aircraft and also highly recommended for remote applications like off-shore wind
electric power conversion systems. In addition, making the system magnet-less has extra benefit. This
reduces cost and allows flexibility in excitation-control. This paper proposes a new brushless and magnetless synchronous generator that is controlled by an induction machine. The stators of synchronous and
induction machine are put in the same structure but wound for different number poles such that they
remain decoupled. The rotors of synchronous and induction machines are put in the same rotating
structure wound for the corresponding number poles (similar to the stator windings). Effectively the
rotor windings are also magnetically decoupled. However, a rotating rectifier is used to rectify the rotor
voltage and current and feed the excitation winding (i.e. rotor winding) of the synchronous machine.
Thus by controlling the induction machine, the excitation of the synchronous machine can be smoothly
controlled. This paper investigates the performance of the synchronous machine when the induction
machine operates in motoring and plugging modes. Extensive simulations results are presented using
MATLAB/Simulink. Authors are presently developing the experimental setup and experimental results
will be presented in the final version of the paper.

Study of Malignancy Associated Changes in Sputum Images as an Indicator

of Lung Cancer
Remya Sudheesh*, Jeny Rajan, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, India
K Sujathan, Veena V S, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, India
Lung cancer is one among the major causes of cancer related deaths. Fortunately, an early stage diagnosis
can increase the survival rates of the patients. Sputum cytology is one of the easiest and cost-effective
method for lung cancer diagnosis. Chances of misdiagnosis and sampling error related to sputum cytology
led to the concept of malignancy associated changes. Malignancy Associated Changes (MAC) are the
subtle changes that happens to the normal appearing cells near or distant from the malignant cells. The
past researches suggest that these changes can be used as an indicator for lung cancer rather than using
malignant cells which are very less in number compared to the normal appearing cells in sputum cytology
images. The proposed work is intended to detect cells with MAC from sputum smear images. Analysis of
nuclei texture features using Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix and Gray Level Run Length Matrix from
both normal and cancer patients revealed that both type of cells could be differentiated. Among 120
texture features calculated for each nuclei, a set of 34 features which clearly distinguishes normal cells and
normal appearing cells were chosen. Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is used to classify the cells
into two classes i.e. cells with MAC and cells without MAC. The current study demonstrated the presence
of MAC in images of sputum samples of lung cancer patients suggesting that identification of cells with
MAC is possible with the conventional sputum cytology images and this technique can have some
significance in the early detection of lung cancer.

Computer-Aided Sleep Staging Using Single-Channel EEG Signals

Ahnaf Hassan*, Mohammed Imamul Hassan Bhuiyan
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh
Automated sleep scoring is essential due to the fact that traditionally a huge bulk of data have to be
analyzed visually by clinicians which is error-prone, onerous, time-consuming, and subject to bias.
Consequently, there is a dire need of a computerize sleep scoring scheme. In this paper, a novel
automated sleep staging scheme using only one channel of EEG signals is propounded. First, we
decompose sleep-EEG signal segments using a newly proposed signal processing technique, namelytunable-Q factor wavelet transform (TQWT). Until now this is the first time TQWT is employed for
sleep staging to the best of the authors' knowledge. Five spectral moment based features are then
computed from TQWT sub-bands. The performance of spectral features in the TQWT domain has been

determined by intuitive and graphical analyses, statistical validation, and Fisher criteria. Random Forest is
used to perform classification. The performance of the proposed scheme is also compared to that of the
state-of-the-art ones. Experimental outcomes manifest the efficacy of our feature generation scheme in
terms of p-values of ANOVA analysis and Fisher criteria. The performance of the proposed method is
significantly better than the existing ones in terms of accuracy and Cohen's kappa coefficient.
Additionally, the proposed scheme gives high detection accuracy for sleep stages non-REM and REM.
Upon its implementation, the proposed scheme can alleviate the burden of the physicians of manually
inspecting a large volume of data, speed-up sleep disorder diagnosis, and expedite sleep research.

Genipin Cross-Linked Composite Hydrogel
Eshwari Dathathri*, Ramyasri Nayak, Jeethu Philip, Goutam Thakur, Manipal Institute of Technology, India
Koteshwara K.B, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, India
A composite hydrogel, using chitosan and gelatin was formulated. Chitosan-gelatin hydrogel in ratio 0.5:1
was prepared in lactic acid (2%). The poor mechanical strength of the gel was overcome by crosslinking
with 1% (w/v) genipin solution. The properties of composite hydrogel were tested based on the
characterizations performed. Swelling test was performed by immersing cross-linked hydrogels in water
for 20 hours and swelling indices were calculated. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy was done to ensure presence
of crosslinking. In-vitro release of uncross-linked and crosslinked hydrogels were performed and
subsequently, release kinetics of two drugs: curcumin (weak base) and diclofenac sodium (weak acid) were
studied. Cumulative release was carried out in deionized water for 30 hours for both the drugs and was
analyzed spectrophotometrically at 265nm for curcumin and 276nm for diclofenac sodium. Cross-linked
hydrogel showed swelling of 99.280.04% for 20 hours. Release profile of curcumin loaded cross-linked
hydrogel showed sustained release of about 80.040.54% over 30 hours; found best fit with Higuchi
model following anomalous transport (n=0.90), while diclofenac sodium loaded cross-linked gel exhibited
sustained release of about 71.720.04 % over 30 hours; found best fit with Higuchi model following
Fickian diffusion (n=0.45). Overall, the results indicated that the cross-linked composite hydrogel could
be tuned as a carrier for the transport of both acidic and basic biomolecules.

Detection of organic vapors employing droplets having nanoparticles

Mitradip Bhattacharjee*, Viswanath Pasumarthi, Joydip Chaudhuri
Amit Kumar Singh, Harshal Nemade, Dipankar Bandyopadhyay
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India
In this paper, a droplet based organic vapour detection technique is discussed. The detection was based
on solutal Marangoni effect where a strong circulation of fluid was observed inside a droplet once an
organic vapour source was introduced near the vicinity of the droplet surface. The reason behind the
rotational motion was the surface tension gradient created on the air-droplet and vapour-droplet
interfaces. Different organic vapours produced rotational motion of different magnitudes inside the
droplet based on the surface tension gradient created on air-droplet and vapour-droplet interfaces. In
order to electrically detect the motion, a nanoparticle laden salt solution droplet was placed in between
two copper electrodes and the electrodes were further connected to a digital multimeter for measuring the
electrical resistance across the droplet. It was observed that there was a change in resistance when the
droplet was set in motion by introducing an organic vapour source. A ~95% change in resistance was
observed due to the flow circulation. It was also observed that the magnitude of change in resistance was
different for different organic vapours. Thus, the system had the capability of being used as organic
vapour sensor. A computational study was also performed in order to explain the phenomenon and to
illustrate the effect of contact angle of the droplet.

RF switching devices are vital elements of all reconfigurable antennas as these are essential for redirecting
the signals and current paths. This redirection of current changes the antennas electrical length and
subsequently changes in resonating frequencies are observed. RF MEMS switches possess excellent
electromagnetic characteristics as compared to other RF switches such as high isolation in off state and
very much low insertion loss in on state. In this paper the ohmic series RF MEMS switch is designed and
its critical parameters are analyzed. This ohmic RF MEMS switch is suitable for reconfigurable microstrip
patch antenna operating at 1-10GHz. The effect of variation of design parameters are analyzed by varying
the design parameters such as gap between the electrodes and thickness of cantilever. The pull in analysis

Avishek Adhikary*, Siddhartha Sen, Karabi Biswas
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
This paper discusses development of a fractional order resonator (FOR) using a single fractor, a capacitor
and a resistor. The said fractor is an obtuse angle type inductive fractor and inclusion of such fractor
makes the Q-factor of this FOR infinite (theoretically). Besides, the proposed FOR is tunable; varying the
fractance, the resonating frequency can be tuned. Design, simulation and hardware realization of this
tunable FOR have been presented here along with detail experimental results. Experimentally a Q factor
more than 100 has been achieved in this work. As an application of this FOR, a tunable FO Notch filter
has also been discussed at the end of this paper.

With advent of microelectronics, power requirement is reduced to greater extend which makes
microsystems self powered. Hence, Energy Harvesting domain becomes center of attraction of
worldwide researchers. It is possible to harvest the energy from the ambient sources which are freely
available in surrounding and use this harvested energy to power the miniaturized devices which require
microwatt power. Since, human body parts like finger, brachial, ankle are curved in nature thus flexible
harvester is proposed in order to mesh with human body parts. Human motions are often complicated
and a periodic. Capturing the vibrations and harvesting the energy from those vibrations is the need of
hour. The proposed harvester with copper meshed electrodes and Zinc oxide (ZnO) as piezoelectric
material was fabricated by simple and inexpensive spin coating method. Copper has been the material of
choice for electrodes because of its exceptional electrical conductivity and availability. The measured
electric potential of the proposed harvester was 0.65 volts at a resonance frequency of 41 Hz and array is
proposed for more electric potential and power.

This paper presents design of low voltage stable SRAM based 11-transistor high speed content
addressable memory (CAM) cell using double gate (DG) Schottky-barrier carbon nanotube field effect
transistor (SB-CNTFET). The 8-transistor highly stable SRAM counterpart of CAM cell contains six ptype and two n-type double gate SB-CNTFETs where the searching network adds three more p-type
transistors. The circuit compatible model of double gate SB-CNTFET operates steadily even at 0.5 V
power supply. This design is implemented with Si- MOSFET, DG SB-CNTFET and MOSFET-like
CNTFET and simulated extensively using Cadence spectre simulator in virtuoso environment. It has
been found that this low voltage SRAM based DG SB-CNTFET CAM cell can achieve 120 less powerdelay-product (PDP) for read operation, 845 less PDP for write operation and 407 less PDP for
search operation compared to Si-MOSFET based design. The DG SB-CNTFET based CAM is also
found to be more stable in low voltage and achieve more than 2 less PDP for read write and search
operations as compared to the MOSFET-like CNTFET based CAM cell.

Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram, India
Two novel nonlinear phase frequency detectors (NL-PFD1 and NL-PFD2) designed with the objective
of achieving higher gain, eliminating blind zone, reducing dead zone and area are proposed in this paper.
Using pass transistor logic in realizing D-flip-flop has resulted in higher gain, area reduction, and higher
maximum frequency for NL-PFD2. Reset delay and dead zone are also found to be reduced using simple
structure. The necessity of reset action is eliminated in both the NL-PFDs as UP and DN signals are
never allowed to reach logic high simultaneously and hence, blind zone is completely eliminated in both
the cases. Nonlinear Phase-Voltage characteristics of PFD has been modeled using Fourier series and
time response of PLL using state space technique and both have been validated by simulation in

This work presents an online testing scheme for detecting Single Missing Gate Faults (SMGF) in
Exclusive-Or Sum of Product (ESOP) based reversible circuits consisting of both the positive and
negative control MCT (Multiple Control Toffoli) gates. In this technique, initially we transform an input
function to its equivalent testable design, where some redundant gates and an ancillary line are appended
to the design. After that, the test vectors are applied to the input of the circuit for detecting all possible
faults in the design. This scheme has been tested successfully over large benchmark circuits to verify
correctness of the algorithm. Performance of the proposed design has been compared with the existing
well known testing algorithms, and improvement over them has been observed.

School of Water Resources Engineering, Jadavpur University, India
Without electrical energy, technology is nothing other than a playing toy. So, efforts always need to
harness electricity from almost every plausible energy points which are discrete or continuous in nature.
In true sense, a developing country's most challenging problem is low-cost sustainable energy generation.
Efforts are being made to develop technologies which would lead to sustainable energy generation. The
present research deals with a new environment friendly hydrokinetic device producing energy using a
technique of vibration induced by vortex (VIV) which may be sometimes called as technique of vibration
induced by flow (FIV) via a linear generator shall be of useful impact. In this research a modified device
was tested in various types of flow depths basically approaching towards shallow water depth in waterchannels and observed the voltage and power correlations for various modified structures used in an
effort to enhance the VIV. This type sustainable generation techniques would be very much useful to
various parts of rural areas where there is limited amount of available electricity.

System
Manasa Madhavi Puralachetty*, Vinay Kumar Pamula, University College of Engineering Kakinada, India
Venkata Naresh Babu Akula, MIC College of Technology, India
PID controller tuning plays a very important role in the proper functioning of the plant in which the
controller is incorporated. A modification to the already existing algorithms like the differential evolution
(DE), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithms is
done in this paper. The modification is done in the initialization method and is called the two stage
initialization (TSI). In TSI, the population vector generation is done randomly in two stages. Then the
newly generated population vector from TSI would go through the rest of the phases involved in the
algorithms. Further, these two stage initialized optimization algorithms and their original versions are used
to tune the PID controller for automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. Comparison of the results so
obtained due to the application of six optimization algorithms out of which three are already existing ones
and the other three are their TSI versions to PID-AVR system is also done. It can be realized that TSI

Synchronisation Control of a Novel Fractional-order Chaotic System with

Hidden Attractor
Manashita Borah*, Prasanta Roy, Binoy Roy
National Institute of Technology Silchar, India
This paper presents a new fractional-order model of a chaotic system that generates only stable equilibria.
The proposed fractional-order chaotic system (FOCS) having exponential nonlinearity, is topologically
inequivalent to typical chaotic systems and challenges the conventional notion of the presence of unstable
equilibria to ensure the existence of chaos in fractional dynamics. This work investigates the hidden
attractor dynamics for varying fractional orders and determines the minimum commensurate dimension
to display chaos. A synchronisation control scheme is put forward to indicate the practical application of
the system in secure communication. Numerical simulations validate the theoretical analysis and signify
that the objectives of the paper are finally achieved.

National Institute of Technology Rourkela, India
The integration of photovoltaic sources to conventional grid and increased utilization of nonlinear loads
yield major power quality issues in the distribution system. Such power quality issues are commonly
reduced by photovoltaic fed distributed static compensator (PV-DSTATCOM). In this paper, a
comparative analysis of the PV-DSTATCOM performance for different controllers is shown. The
controllers used for power quality improvement are instantaneous reactive power theory (IRP), modified
instantaneous reactive power theory (MIRP) and Icos algorithm. To verify the robustness of different
controllers to load change, load unbalancing and non-ideal supply voltage conditions, the PVDSTATCOM is simulated with nonlinear load, linear load, unbalanced load and thyristor load under ideal
and as well as distorted supply voltage conditions. Furthermore an experimental setup has been
developed to ratify the performance of the controllers with practical constraints.

Detection, Characterization and Classification of Short Duration Voltage

Events using DWT and Fuzzy Logic

K. K. Wagh Institute of Engineering Education & Research, Nashik, India
Electrical power supply is one of the most important issues to utilities, equipment manufactures,
electricity suppliers, and customers. Good power quality is defined in terms of voltage, current and
frequency. The problems manifested in this may lead to power quality disturbances. The effect of poor
power quality may lead to the equipment failure and breakdown, as the most of power electronics devices
may fail to sustain sudden drop in voltage and may stop working. Power quality disturbances must be
detected and localized in order to avoid such incidents which will cause huge economic loss in industrial
as well as in commercial areas. The power quality events are classified according to disturbance duration
namely, short and long duration events.Short duration voltage events, like voltage interruption, sag and
swell occur from 0.5 cycle to 1 min with respective decrease or increase in the rms value. This paper
presents detection and characterization of voltage interruption, sag and swell by extracting the features
using discrete wavelet transform (DWT). These features are used for the classification of these events
using rule based fuzzy logic. This combination of DWT and fuzzy logic gives classification of power
quality disturbances (PQD). Several simulations on detection and characterization by DWT along with
classification of these events using fuzzy logic are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed
method.

Band-pass filter design based on Half Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (HMSIW) has been
presented in this paper. The PEC surface of the HMSIW has been etched with periodic F-shaped
Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structures to obtain the bandpass characteristics. Single and array of
three similar elements are used which effectively serves the purpose of reduced the Insertion Loss within
the transmission passband. The concept is validated with parametric variations of several important EBG
parameters. The design confirms the luxury to obtain pass-band at other microwave bands by simple
alterations of the dimensions of the inverted F shaped EBG elements. The filter finds applications in Ku
band satellite and radar operations with advantages like convenient integration, compact size, low cost
and ease in fabrication.

Priority Based ZigBee Routing Protocol for LR-WPAN

Nikumani Choudhury*, Rakesh Matam, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati, India
Vaskar Deka, Gauhati University, India
ZigBee is an emerging network standard for low power, low data-rate, resource constrained networks. It
provides network and upper layer services for LR-WPAN, Cyber physical systems, Industrial sensor
networks, smart grids, home automa- tions, etc. The routing layer uses the tree based routing protocol
wherein only parent and child relationship are considered for routing, ignoring neighbor nodes. As a
result, packets may be routed through several hops towards the destination even if it is within senders 1hop transmission range, and via highly loaded or high traffic links. The paper proposes an improved
ZigBee algorithm by employing neighbour tables and link quality indicator (LQI). Keeping in mind the
low complexity of traditional ZigBee protocol, priority based approach has been implemented by using
two of the reserved bits as priority bits in route selection. Opnet Simulator was used for the simulation
purpose along with Visual Studio 2005 for C++ compiler. The proposed priority based routing protocol
performed better than the classical algorithm, and thus can be claimed as an enhanced ZigBee protocol.

Application of the Chinese Remainder Theorem for Source Location Privacy

in Wireless Sensor Network
Manjula R*, Raja Datta
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
In this paper we investigate an application of the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) for a novel secret
and privacy preserving routing technique in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The distinctive nature of
the proposed technique is gathering the data, aggregating and then slicing the aggregate using t-out-of-n
secret sharing scheme (based on CRT) and then route the packets to the sink via multiple disjoint paths.
The sink will recover the final aggregate with just t shares using CRT. The multi-objective of the
proposed technique is to provide security, source location privacy, and mitigate the problems of packet
losses associated with the unreliable wireless communication medium by improving the reliability. We
also propose an enhanced routing technique that achieves network wide disjoint routing paths which
overcomes the drawback of existing phantom single-path routing scheme. Finally, we present the details
of the proposed technique with a numerical example and present its possible application for secure and
dynamic routing in WSN.

An Analog-Front-End for Non-Invasive Fetal Electrocardiography

Monitoring
Sachin John*, Priya Ranjan Muduli, Anirban Mukherjee
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Fetal electrocardiography (fECG) based assessment techniques are likely to be more effective in ensuring
fetal well-being, than currently popular methods based on ultrasound echocardiography and pulse
oximetry. Employing Non-invasive procedures for measurement of fECG not only ensures minimal
patient discomfort, but also makes the product suitable for wearable applications. However, non-invasive
fECG extraction has proven to be difficult due to low amplitudes of fECG signals, attenuation by
maternal biological tissues, overlapping spectra with other fetal and maternal bio-signals and lowfrequency noise in measurement devices. This paper describes the design of a noise optimized AnalogFront-End (AFE) for a non-invasive fECG monitor. The design criterion laid down for the fECG
monitor require it to be an ambulatory, low-power, inexpensive device, interfaced to a smart-phone and
capable of running computationally intensive signal processing algorithms. The primary role of the AFE
is to filter-out large DC offsets, movement artifacts, high-frequency noise and subsequently amplify and
condition the extracted signals before digitization. This noise optimized design makes use of activeelectrodes fabricated on small printed circuit boards (PCB). Each PCB is mounted on standard Ag-AgCl
electrodes to buffer, filter and amplify abdominal bio-signals as soon as they are detected. The extracted
signals are then sent to the fECG monitor PCB for further processing and signal conditioning, before
being digitized by a 24-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) of an ARM Cortex M3 based system-onchip (SoC). The monitor is designed to work with supply voltages from 3.6V dc to 5.5V dc , allowing it to
be powered from a variety of sources; battery packs to USB connectors. Working of the AFE was tested
using synthetic signals and elementary biological signals.

In this paper a methodology for design automation of bigger analog module is proposed. The proposed
methodology uses hierarchical decomposition of the bigger module into its constituents cell level circuits
(referred to as leaf cells) and then the cell level circuits are designed using top down constraint driven
design approach. This hierarchical decomposition reduces the complexity of the design automation task.
The trade-off characteristic curves of the cell level circuits are used to determine the design feasibility and

to propagate the specification of the bigger module to that of its constituent leaf cells. The methodology
is validated in a 0.18 um CMOS process by designing a high-performance gain boosted folded cascode
Op-Amp (GBOPAMP) for the first stage of a 10-bit 50 Ms/s pipeline ADC. The designed GBOPAMP
achieves a DC gain of 75 dB, a unity-gain frequency (UGF) of 520 MHz with 65 degree phase margin and

In this paper, the stability/performance of the conventional SRAM cell architectures have been
demonstrated using a novel heterojunction double gate tunnel FET (H-DGTFET) device at 15 nm
technology node. This device has improved ON-current (ION) because of the decrease in width of the
depletion region due to a highly doped layer placed in the channel near the source-channel junction. It
results in an improved ION/IOFF ratio, consuming significantly less amount of static power. The
conventional 6T and 8T SRAM architectures have been implemented using this novel H-DGTFET
operating at low supply voltage of 0.3 V. The performance of the 6T and 8T SRAM cells have been
analyzed in terms of hold, read & write SNMs and total average power consumption. The read SNM for
6T and 8T SRAM cells have been found to be 54 mV and 69 mV respectively; hold and write SNM for
6T are 90 mV and 103 mV respectively. Total average power consumption for 6T and 8T SRAM cells are
2.13 W and 2.68 W respectively in one cycle consisting of two reads and one write 0/write 1
operations.

Conventional CMOS technology comes up with a percentage of margins when climbing into a nano-level.
So to overcome this, several substitute technologies have been proposed as a solution. Quantum dot
Cellular Automata (QCA) technology is one such upcoming nano-technology that can be a perfect
substitute of Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) due to its low power consumption
and high speed in both nano-science and nano-electronics arena. Thus, QCA overpowers the hitches of
CMOS technology and has a substantial relevance in the field of quantum computation. Literary study

A Tunable CPW Spurline Filter Employing Distributed MEMS Switches

Nisha Jose K*, College of Engineering, Trivandrum, India
The present work uses MEMS switches for electrostatic control of centre frequency and bandwidth in a
CPW Spurline filter. The filter consists of short end series stub resonators etched in the signal line of
CPW. MEMS capacitive shunt switches are loaded across the stubs and across the inter resonator spaces
and actuation of the switches alter the effective electrical length of the stub sections and the inter
resonator spaces. This leads to variation in frequency response. The design of the MEMS switches is also
presented. This is based on modeling the variation in effective electrical length due to the loading by the
MEMS shunt switches.

Expressive Speech Analysis for Epoch Extraction Using Zero Frequency

Filtering Approach
Pravena Duplex*, Govind D
Amrita University, India
The present work discusses the issues of epoch extraction from expressive speech signals. Epochs
represent the accurate glottal closure instants in voiced speech which in turn give the accurate instants of
maximum excitation of the vocal tract. Even though, there are many existing methods for epoch
extraction, which provide near perfect epoch estimation from clean or neutral speech, these methods
show significant drop in the epoch extraction performance for expressive speech signals. The occurrence
of uncontrolled and rapid pitch variations in expressive speech signals cause degradation in the epoch
extraction performance. The objective of the present work is to improve the epoch extraction
performance of the speech signals with various perceptually distinct expressions compared to neutral
speech using zero frequency filtering (ZFF) approach. In order to capture the rapid and uncontrolled
variations in expressive speech utterances, trend removal is performed on short segments (25 ms) of the
output obtained from the cascade of three zero frequency resonators (ZFR). The epoch estimation
performance of the proposed method is compared with the conventional ZFF method, existing refined
ZFF method proposed for expressive speech and recently proposed zero band filtering (ZBF) approach.
The effectiveness of the approach is confirmed by the improved epoch identification rate and reduced
miss and false alarm rates compared with that of the existing methods.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a recently developed revolutionary video technology to visually
inspect the entire gastrointestinal tract in a non-invasive way. However, a major problem associated with
this technology is that to detect bleeding, a physician has to analyze the tremendous amount of image
frames, which is both time consuming and due to oversight often leads to human error. These limitations
give motivation for development of computer aided automatic bleeding detection schemes. In this paper,
to investigate bleeding, the analysis of WCE image frames is carried out in normalized RGB (rgb) color

space as human perception of bleeding is associated with different shades of red and rgb overcomes some
of the drawbacks of conventional RGB color space. In the proposed method, at first, the WCE image
frame is segmented based on different ranges of r-values. Then for a certain level of r-value, the variation
in g plane is presented with the help of histogram. Features are extracted from the proposed r versus g
plane histograms. For the purpose of classification, KNN classifier is employed. Extensive
experimentation on several WCE image frames obtained from various publicly available WCE videos
makes it evident that the proposed method outperforms some of the existing methods in terms of
accuracy (98.12%), sensitivity (94.98%) and specificity (98.55%).

Non-rigid Medical Image Registration using Adaptive knot selection in pSpline

Smita Pradhan*, Dipti Patra
National Institute of Technology Rourkela, India
In medical imaging application, non-rigid registration is an important step which requires transformation
to align the deformed floating image grid points spatially with reference image grids. The transformation
includes interpolation which estimates the intensity values of floating image other than the grid points.
For non-rigid registration, generally the transformation is modeled using B-spline basis function. As the
acquired images are deformed and contains bias field, it is very time consuming to reform the grid at each
level. Considering the registration process as an optimization problem, the grid points are adaptively
chosen and updated iteratively with a new transformation in each step. In this paper, an adaptive knot
placement algorithm is presented for P-spline interpolation method to achieve accurate alignment of local
deformation with less computation time. The proposed algorithm is validated with 3 sets of simulated
brain images with a known distortion and 2 real brain MR image data sets. Different performance
measures such as MSE, RMS, and NAE are used to evaluate the qualitative measure of the proposed
scheme. Estimated transformation grid and evaluated performance measures show the improvement in
the proposed algorithm as compared to the other existing state-of-arts.

Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing, Kancheepuram, India
Researchers working in the field of image quality assessment are constantly developing algorithms for
assessing the quality of a given image. This is a very challenging task as the given image may be affected
by different types of distortions. One of the most common distortions is image blurring. In this paper, we
propose a no-reference image quality assessment algorithm to assess the quality of images corrupted by
blurring in Discrete Cosine Transform domain. The proposed algorithm works faster than the state of the
art algorithms for the same problem, and the score computed by the algorithm has more correlation with
the human opinion score than existing methods which means that the proposed image sharpness measure
mimics the human visual system closely.

The work presented in this paper investigates the significance of natural elicitation of emotions during the
development of simulated full blown emotion speech databases emotion analysis. A subset of primary
emotions such as anger, happy and sad emotions along with neutral utterances are used in the present
work. The first part of the work discusses the development of a simulated full blown emotion database by
selecting 50 emotionally biased prompts for the recording the emotional speech data in Tamil language.
For the comparative study, another simulated emotion database is developed by recording 50 neutral
utterances for recording the emotion speech from the same speakers. The second part of the work is the
comparison of emotion recognition performance of the simulated emotion speech databases using the
basic Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based system with mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC). A
significant variations in the recognition rates of different emotions are observed for both the databases
with emotionally biased utterances and emotionally neutral emotion utterances. Where the emotionally
biased utterances observed to be more effective in discriminating emotions than emotionally neutral
simulated emotion database. Also, the emotion recognition rates obtained for the simulated emotionally
neutral emotion utterances follow the same trend as that of the classical German full blown simulated
emotion database.

An Efficient Visually Meaningful Image Encryption Using Arnold

Transform
Manikandan V M*, Masilamani V
Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing, Kancheepuram, India
Image encryption is a quite well-developed area of multimedia security which helps to protect the
confidentiality of authorized users image content by converting it into an incomprehensible form. Most
of the image encryption algorithms will generate encrypted images with noise-like or texture-like contents.
Hence its easy to distinguish natural images from encrypted images. The chances of attacks and image
analysis by malicious people are more on images with noise-like or texture-like contents. This paper
presents an efficient visually meaningful image encryption algorithm that uses integer discrete wavelet
transform (DWT) and Arnold transform. The central idea of proposed scheme is to use a reference image
to hide the original image in its encrypted form. Arnold transform has been used to transform the
encrypted original image content before inserting it into the wavelet sub-bands of the reference image.
The final encrypted image will look similar to the reference image, and the original image can be extracted
and decrypted by an authorized person who has the valid decryption and data hiding key.

Rhushikesh Joshi*, Arjun TV, Ahish S, National Institute of Technology Goa, India

Vasantha M H, Nithin Kumar Y B, National Institute of Technology Goa, India
In this paper, the utility of double-gate (DG) junctionless (JL) transistor in attaining better DC and
analog/RF performances are demonstrated. The analysis is done by extracting drain current versus gate
voltage characteristics, transconductance, transconductance generation factor, gate-to-gate capacitance,
ratio of gate-to-source capacitance to gate-to-drain capacitance. Sensitivity analysis show that, JL
transistors prove to be less sensitive to channel (gate) length variation as short-channel effect is amply
controlled. It is also seen that ON-state current remains almost constant with increase in temperature. At
a particular drain current JL transistors achieve higher values of unity-gain cut-off frequency and gain
bandwidth (GBW) product for ultra low power operation. Furthermore, mixed-mode circuit simulations
have been performed by implementing Inverter circuit and a Common Source (CS) amplifier circuit using
DG JL transistor. The inverter shows better noise margin for the given supply voltage. The CS amplifier
gain increases with increase in load resistance. Maximum gain of 18 dB is obtained for load resistance of
15 K Ohms with a 3-dB cut-off frequency of 0.955 THz. The results of these simulations give insights
into the circuit level behaviour of JL transistor which can be used as a future device owing to its
characteristics.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India
This paper presents an alternative approach to design reconfigurable mixed signal distributed arithmetic
(DA) based finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The proposed architecture is based on the use of normal
CMOS transistor for various computational blocks involved in the filter design. To maintain the
reconfigurability, an electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) based
potentiometer (POT) is also employed that stores the analog filter weights. Moreover, the analog weights
are separately added in last cycle corresponding to most significant bit and eliminates the extra control
circuitry for bit-inversion. We have simulated the proposed architecture in UMC 180 nm CMOS using
Cadence Spectre with input sampling frequency of 1.25 MHz. It is found that the proposed architecture
dissipates the static power of 4.85 mW.

Robust Face Recognition of Inferior Quality Images Using Local Gabor

Phase Quantization
Shubhobrata Bhattacharya*, Anirban Dasgupta, Aurobinda Routray
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
Inferior quality images often pose a major challenge in the domain of face recognition. This paper
presents a scheme for face recognition which can not only work efficiently on standard databases but also
on inferior quality images having low and medium resolutions. The proposed framework uses Local
Gabor Phase Quantizers (LGPQ) to compensate for the quality of the images. In this framework, a probe
face image is taken as input, which undergoes preprocessing for photometric corrections. The
preprocessed image undergoes Gabor transformation, where Local Phase Quantizers are applied
independently on each frame to obtain the signature histograms. These histograms are finally matched
with the gallery image weights using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The framework has been
tested on images selected from the CMU, AR, Yale databases.

Telugu Handwritten Character Recognition using Adaptive and Static

Zoning Methods
Durga Prasad Sanugula*, Yashwanth Kanduri
National Institute of Technology Warangal, India
Character recognition is one of the fields of research in pattern recognition. Recognition of hand-written
characters can be done either On-line or Offline. Not much substantial work has been published in the
past on the development of hand-written character recognition (HWCR) systems for Telugu text.
However none of them give 100% accuracy in recognition of Telugu characters. Therefore, it is an area of
ongoing research. Our effort is intended to improve the accuracy in Telugu character recognition. This
motivated us to undertake this work. Zonal based feature extraction is used in the present proposed work.
We presented two methods for this purpose. First method is based on Genetic Algorithm and uses
adaptive zoning topology with extracted geometric features. In second method, zoning is done in static
way and uses distance, density based features. In both the contexts, we use K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN)
algorithm for classification purpose. The character image is divided into predefined number of zones and
features of all the zones in the image form a feature vector which is used in classification phase of handwritten character recognition. Using first method we obtained accuracies of 100 percent and 82.4 percent
for 11 and 50 symbols respectively. Using second method we obtained accuracies of 100 percent and 88.8
percent for 11 and 50 symbols respectively.

Phonocardiogram (PCG) segmentation is the crucial first step in automated heart sound analysis and
diagnostic systems. Recently, the cardiac signals (including, electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram and
photoplethysmogram) are simultaneously recorded for most cardiac signal processing applications such as
cardiovascular diagnostic system, biometric authentication, and emotion/stress recognition. In this paper,
we present an effective two-channel heart sound segmentation framework using PCG and pulse signals.
The proposed framework comprises the steps of: heart sound signal decomposition using stationary
wavelet transform, Shannon entropy envelope extraction, heart sound endpoint determination, systolic
peak detection, and heart sound discrimination. The proposed framework is tested and validated using the
simultaneously recorded heart sound and pulse signals. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that
the proposed heart sound endpoint and systolic peak detection methods can achieves an average Se of
98.98%, +P of 96.80% and Se of 99.57%, +P of 99.37%, respectively. The proposed framework achieves

A comparative study on Phonological Feature Detection from continuous

speech with respect to variable corpus size
Tanmay Bhowmik*, Shyamal Das Mandal, Krishna Dulal Dalapati
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
In this paper, place and manner of articulation based phonological features have been successfully
identified with high accuracy using very minimal amount of training data. In detection-based, bottom-up
speech recognition approach, the phonological feature based acoustic-phonetic speech attributes are
considered as a key component. After identifying the features, they are merged together to get the
phonemes. So this type of feature detection using low corpus size shows a path with which continuous
speech can be recognized using inadequate data repository also. To execute the experiment, both the
language, Bengali and English have been considered. The sentences were trained using deep neural
network. Training procedure is carried out for Bengali using three different corpus sizes with a number of
100, 200, and 500 sentences. The average frame level accuracies were obtained as 87.88%, 88.43% and
88.96% respectively for CDAC speech corpus. Whereas using the same training procedure for TIMIT
corpus, the accuracies were 87.97%, 88.84%, and 89.39% respectively. So the average frame level accuracy
is almost same irrespective of number of training data. This ensures, in case of small speech corpora,
phonological feature based speech attributes can be detected with the bottom-up approach.

a number of covariates that affect single view based gait. Nevertheless, the conventional methods couldnt
handle covariates effectively. Our propose framework comprises a dictionary, which describes five
segments of a subject over a gait period. The feature vectors are deduced from ellipse based parameters
from each segments and fused to form a covariance matrix. Each matrix is used as dictionary atom and
solved using - minimization. The linear representations of sparse codes of different atoms are used for

This paper presents a dynamic trajectory planning approach for a nonholonomic mobile robot
intercepting a moving target. The path is formulated using cubic Bezier curves. Location data from an
overhead camera is used to compute the initial trajectory. The algorithm alters the trajectory in real time
according to change in position and velocity of the target and the mobile robot without exceeding
acceleration limits. The wheel velocities are then computed from the compliant center velocity generated
from the velocity profile analysis of the calculated path. The approach is verified by simulation.
Extensions of the algorithm to parallel applications are also discussed.

In this work, a low cost accident detection platform is proposed for the vehicles which can intelligently
detect an accident in a single VANET controlled area and sends reports to the nearby metropolitan
authority. When an accident is detected the client Arduino sends the information via nRF (transceiver)
module to the server Arduino. After processing information the Arduino server sends the full
information to the metropolitan server agent. The sever agent is complied with a wireless usb nRF
medium that overcomes the major issues of GSM repeaters. The Arduino server mainly sends vehicle
information (e.g. vehicle ID, area ID) to the traffic server agent. The process continues until authority
reaches the accident spot and regenerate file input and output operation of the metropolitan server agent.
