10.How you are trying to improve your operations?

This paper is all about issues challenges faced by practioners rechaers while
implementing sustainability in operations. From many years businesses are moving
towards eco friendly environement approach in production. Triple bottom line
philosophy is also followed people planet profit. For health and safety operations
like green-product design, lean and green operations, and closed-loop supply chains
are applied. This paper review these and other sustainability themes covered in
the first 50 issues of Production and Operations Management and conclude with
some thoughts on future research challenges in sustainable operations management.
1. Introduction and Background
It is reviewed in this research what the journal pom has accomplished in its first 50 issues in the
context of sustainability. Sustainability includes environmental manage-ment, closed-loop supply
chains, and a broad perspec-tive on triple-bottom-line thinking, integrating profit, people, and the
planet into the culture, strategy, and operations of companies. It is started with trends that have
shaped the field of operations management (OM) in the past two decades and influ-enced the mission
of the journal, POM.
1.2.
Innovations in the 1980s and the 1990s: TQM, JIT, and BPR
total quality management (TQM), time-based competition, and just-in-time operations (JIT) these
philosophies are famous for japans economy revival. These pholophies became important in
operations for manufacturing earlier along with new wave business process reengineering that helped
in a same way for non manufacturing and this evolution was named as process management. corecompetency and process management movements caused many of the past decades changes
including the unbundling of value chains, outsourcing, and innovations in con-tracting and supply
chains.
1.3.
Focus on Product Development and Supply Chains
the process and concepts of TQM and JIT were applied to devel-oping new product development and
managing sup-ply chains, and they typically involved multiple orga-nizations.
These approaches were adopted at every step of supply chain and later they become foundations for
global supply chain and manufacturing.
1.4. Supply Chains as the Business Model
Many companies were using simple methods as business models like dell Toyota and zara like supply
chain model as business model because it was the most simplest cost effective ,revenues, assets
balancing and other improvements in process.
1.5.
Sustainability: A Key Element in Supply Chains
At first people thought only people and profitability are only elements for long term success in
companies but later the planet earth was also considered as triple bottom line element to maintain
sustainibility in operations as well as to make a difference.

2. Roots and Branches of Sustainability Theory

2.1.
Convergence of Social Needs and Competitive Advantage
Sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Triple bottom line philosophy was
introduced because of growing concerns nd make sure that organizations are concerned about people
health safety and environment.
There was on going war of arguments between environmental protection and economic
competitiveness .many people were thinking that regulations on technology will reduce innovations

and production but OM had to make sure triple bottom line in order to save planet in such a way that
it should carry strong environmental, health, and safety record, in the most cost-effective manner.

3.

Sustainable OM in the First 50

Issues
Sustainable OM integrates the profit and efficiency orientation of traditional OM with broader
consider-actions of the companys internal and external stake-holders and its environmental impact.
The evolution towards sustainable OM is clear in three areas that integrate the three Ps of sustainable
OM.
1.
Green product and process development
2.
Lean and green OM
3. Remanufacturing and closed-loop supply chains
4.
Although the focus here is on the first 50 issues of
POM, we also cover work published in other premier OM journals.
3.1. Green Product and Process Development
3.1.1.
Uncertainty, Lead Times, and Investment.
When companies invest in technology it involves more money, more lead times and uncertainty about
benefits. It creates issue for companies whether to invest in sustainable technologies or not.
First mover advantage
It is considered as competitive advantage when you are ahead of competitors while investing in
sustainable technologies like Toyota had first mover advantage when they build ecofriendly car
before its competitors.
Sustaible product designs
For sustainable products designs should also be sustainable.
First for breakdowns of parts in production lead to replace entire assembly that created cost as wel as
environment hazards.
, Now the practice of de-veloping designs that avoid environmentally hazard-ous components and
make it economically possible to save components .To produce such designs that become eco
friends\ly.and helps to recycle as well.

3.1.4.

The Impact of Sustainable Design on Supply chian-

Modular sustainable designs helped in supply chain process by provide safe and safety design to
reduce waste and toxics in between process of supply chain.

3.2. Lean and Green Operations

OM is attempting to use the tools and concepts of lean operations to add green metrics to the
measures of Excellence Companys use in evaluating business pro-cesses. Several POM authors
have written about whether the lean and green approach is evident in practice, how best to
achieve it, and what its net benefits are

Corporate image and profitability

Synergies between Lean and Green.
Safety health systems designs can lead to more revenues and market share.
It was also found that lean manufacturing should be implemented with green approach in
order to make more effective.
Regulatory compliance
Companies must track hazards.
Liability negligent
Employee Health and Safety. Similar to community concerns, employee health and safety is a
key focus of risk reduction and risk communication
Improved Tools and Management Systems for Better Product and Process Design. To
achieve sus-tainable OM, companies must integrate employee health and safety metrics with key
business processes, measure results, and obtain the commitment of top management.
3.3. Remanufacturing and Closed-Loop Supply Chains
The Genesis and the Architecture of Closed-Loop Supply Chains. As profit margins shrink,
product life cycles shorten, and environmental concerns increase, businesses consider product
take-back
Now concept has shifted from minimizing costs to creating value.Researches are trying to
improve production in close looped chain systems with multidisciplinary strategies rather than
searate decslipnes.in this way marketing issues are resolved.
Since 1992 about 50 issues were highlighted in POM by different researchers regarding
environment ,remanufacturing, different publications were published and still this research is
continue.
In the future, researchers will need to integrate deci-sions over the life cycle of products. CLSCs
foster sustainability. Product recovery and reuse reduces the damaging effects on environment of
waste disposal, of extracting raw materials, and of transport and distribution.cls increase profit
with saving planet along with overcoming challenges.
Conclusions and Directions for the

Future
The 50 issues of POM have contributed in 50 issues of sustainibilty OM in practice and research
can should also contribute. Because it is helpul in various aspects like building bridges with other
functions, designing, achieving targets. This can be only achieved through OM 3BL framework
because sustainable OM allow a company to structure and man-age its business processes to
obtain competitive re-turns without compromising anything regarding people or environment. In
future many departments societies are working on this and they will continue to grow like POM
fifty issues and POMS college inorder to maintain sustainable environment along with sustaible
production.
