3.3 Settings
The rope brake is supplied ready for installation. The switches in the magnetic
valve and the compressor have been factory set.
3.4 Functional Description
BODE rope brakes are safety components certified according to
EN 81-1:1998 + A3:2009. They serve as a protective device for moving up the lift
cabin to overspeed. With an appropriate acquisition and trigger system, which is
also in accordance with standard EN 81-1:1998 + A3:2009 certified, the rope
brake can also be used for standstill monitoring. Here provides BODE a control
unit SMC-24-A3 or a overspeed governor type ASV.
In conjunction with the safety switch or pre-cut switch on the overspeed governor
and the rope brake control can be monitored with the following operating
conditions of a brake cable lift system:

Control unit RBC14

1. Speed
The rope brake is closed by excessive speed in both directions, the signal of the
speed comes from the safety switch on the governor.
2. Standstill monitoring
Through the use of a overspeed governor certified according to EN 81-1:1998 +
A3:2009 with the rope brake, the standstill monitoring can be performed. If an
uncontrolled movement is at the stop, the rope brake receives from overspeed
governor an appropriate signal. The rope brake closes and stops the elevator at a
standstill.
By overspeed of the elevator system are the safety switch (if Vn < 1,01m/s) or
the pre-cut switch (if Vn > 1,00 m/s) connected on the governor (separately).
This gives a signal to the control unit RBC14 and the rope brake closes. This
happens by overspeed in both directions.
3. Power failure
The rope brake closes by power failure and will open automatically after switching
on the power supply.
4. Function monitoring
The functions of the rope brake are checked once every 24 hours. This is done
automatically by the control unit. The time of testing can be adjusted. The
compressor receives half an hour before and after the test, a running time window
in which the pressure in case of need can be rebuilt.

Additional function through the use of the detection system

SMC-24-A3
The SMC-24-A3 is a type tested PESSRAL control board that monitors, in conjunction
with a pressure roller and the sensors, the overspeed and uncontrolled movement f the
elevator system. Since the detection is on the ropes of the elevator system, is the
possible slippage of the ropes of the SMC-24-A3 registered.
5. Standstill monitoring
If the elevator set in motion in the station with door open, the rope brake will be
closed after a limited way.

6. Overspeed
The speed of the elevator system is continuously monitored during the journey. If
the determined limit by the learning cycle speed is
passed , deceleration of the car is done by the rope brake.
7.The rope brake can be operated through the use of the SMC-24-A3 without a
overspeed governor.

By use of a control board SMC-24-A3 is not necessarily to replace the overspeed

governor.

The rope brake closes with compressed air, and opens with spring force again.
In case of power failure, the rope brake is applied. Due to the pressure accumulator to
the compressor, the rope brake will close for a some time. After switching on the power
supply the rope brake will open automatically.
Creates a pressure loss of the pneumatic unit, the upcoming tour stops and shut down
the elevator to the floor. The elevator is operational again when the operating pressure
of 5.5 bar is pending.
Within 24 hours is a functional test of the rope brake system. The test time can be set on
the control unit during stillstand of the lift system. Should an error occur during this test,
the elevator system is shut down.
By the rope brake with the control unit SMC-24-A3 are following additional functions:
Due to the proximity switch, either on the governor or an the pressure roller, which
pushes on the ropes or the governor, are fixed, the rest of the chamber is monitored at
the station. Should sink the car with the door open in order to stop a limited area, the
rope brake is applied. An opening of the rope brake can be carried out via the controller.
The speed of the system can be measured, regardless of the overspeed. Since the
detection system works on the ropes, is to secure the excess speed down a safety gear
required.
For monitoring the speed and trigger the rope brake, a overspeed governor is needed, or
an other acquisition system (SMC -24-A3) according to EN 81-1.
Although the rope brake is activated in both directions, can not be resign for a safety
gear for the downward movement.
By elevators with Vn < 1.01 m/s ca be triggered simultaneously in excess speed in the
downward direction of the rope brake and the safety gear.

After a failure occurred, the lift must be taken into operation unless the cause of the
failure has been eliminated and the lift has been checked by accordingly trained
expert personnel.

5.1 Mechanical Installation

The rope brake is supplied ready for operation.

The cylinder, piston, and moveable brake plate are tied together by a metal
securing tape. This tape must not be removed until the rope brake installation has
been completed. The piston must not be removed from the cylinder as the lip seal
will otherwise be damaged.
As for new lifts, the rope brakes can be pulled in on the mounting console (to be
construction-wise provided for) once the rope brake has been installed.
As for existing lifts, the installation is to be made as follows:

Remove the two diagonally opposite locking screws (Pos.6) and replace
them by the two stud bolts provided. Press down the cylinder by means of
the bolts nuts and remove the remaining locking screws.

Now, evenly unscrew the bolts nuts. After releasing the pressure springs
the entire unit incl. cylinder (Pos.1), piston and loose brake plate (Pos.2)
can be lifted off.
The distance sleeves (Pos.8) and pressure springs (Pos.7) are loose.
Secure before disassembly.
The fix plate can now be mounted below the ropes. For securing it, we
recommend a:

5.2 Pneumatic Unit
5.2.1 Description
The compressed air supply to the rope brake can be made either with the
compressor supplied or via the existing process air. It has to be ensured that a
sufficient reservoir (min 25 lt.) has been installed upstream and the operating
pressure must range between 6-8 bar.
On the compressor supplied a fast coupling has been mounted to the pressure
reservoir. Insert a hose for compressed air (inner diameter: 10mm) into the plug
provided (see notes on installation).

!
i

Exclusively use compressors on which the pressure control device has

been set to an operational pressure of 6-8 bar.
The compressor must have a reservoir of min. 25 litres.
Do not use any mist oiler. The compressed air must be oil free.
Exclusively use an R6 hose complying with EN 854-SAE 100 R6.

We recommend installing a water separator including filter between compressor

and magnetic valve. The flow rate must be min. 1000 l/min. The water separator
should be placed near the rope brake. Before connecting with the magnetic valve,
the compressor has to be on 8 bar operating pressure.

If the compressor is used in high humidity operating conditions a heavy water

condensation is to be expected, what more frequent draining of the compressor entails.
For draining a automatically water separator can be installed on the compressor.
The magnetic valve should be installed directly on to the rope brake and on the
lowermost position (Picture No. 1). The vent clip should vent down. This is the only way
to ensure that any condensation water entering in to the rope brake, can be blown off if
you open this. If the rope brake is installed in the shaft, the magnetic valve must be
accessible in order to be able to free people in case of emergency. Another option is use
of our venting valve (Article no. 701660)

The connection of the magnetic valve and rope brake is to be made in form
of a fix piping (ERMETO piping) or with an R6 hose complying with
EN 854-SAE 100 R6.
If the pressure in the pneumatic unit falls below 5bar the lift will be brought
to a halt by means of the pressure switch.

Procedure for periodic inspection of the elevator system when operated by
overspeed governor
The rope brakes operability can be checked as follows:
1. By manually or remotely actuating the safety switch.
2. Upon reaching overspeed (e.g. test groove on the governor)
For checking the safety gears operational readiness the rope brake must be taken
out of operation at it is otherwise actuated either simultaneously with or before
the safety gear. For this purpose the rope brake has to be dead of voltage and
pressure less.
This can be done by removing the hose from the compressor or by use of the
venting valve. The safety gear can now be tested without the rope brake slow the
cabin.
The test procedure can only be undertaken if it is ensured that no persons are in
cabin.
After the test, the rope brake is in operation again.
By use of the control board SMC-24-A3 please check the relevant section in the operating
manual.

Rescuing People by breakdown of operating voltage

10.1

With the magnetic valve

By power breakdown the rope brake must be open by the venting button
(picture 2, Pos. 6)

Caution: By opening the rope brake the supporting cable of the elevator system
may not be moved. If they get moving, immediately release the venting button.

If are not movement of the supporting cables, the rope brake must be pressure less by
pulling of the hose from compressor. Now the rope brake will by stay open and the
rescuing of people can be done by the instruction from the elevator producer.
10.2

With the venting valve

For an easier rescuing a venting valve can be used. The venting valve (picture 3) has to
be mounted between the magnetic valve and compressor. By power breakdown the hand
gear must be pressed down till the catch. The rope brake will open.

Caution: By opening the rope brake the supporting cable of the elevator system
may not be moved. If they get moving, immediately release the venting button.

If are not movement of the supporting cables, the safety pin (picture 3, Pos 2) must be
