been exceeded? How high have the temperatures been in the furnace area and
which material has been in the furnace at
the time of the emergency stop? All these
questions can be answered very quickly by
the event-based recording on the HD server, the so-called Event Store. In case of
the event-based recording, certain events
trigger messages that are stored in the
Event Store and displayed in the event table.
Mode of operation
In case you want to know if and when certain events happened in course of the production process, you will soon reach the
limit of the time-based recording.
In rolling mills, for example, the following
questions are relevant: How can the rolling
process of certain strip numbers be traced
back? When have certain limit values

Applications
The GigE cameras, are especially suited
for recording fast moving processes and
machine parts. No matter, if a high timebased or graphical resolution: You will
always have a clear gain in quality. The
cameras offer slow-motion replays of fast
moving processes as well as finest graphic
details.
Hardware requirements
Because of the high demands on image
processing (data streams of up to 92 MB/s),
a new server with a suitable operating system and state-of-the-art processors has
been developed for the use of GigE cameras.

Abstract
Siemens Energy
HVDC: Control Plus
Interfacing with
iba products
Siemens Energy, one of the worlds leading suppliers for energy transmission and distribution uses iba
components in a power supply project for High Voltage DC transmission over a sea cable between Finland
and Estonia (length >140 km). The fast and reliable exchange of fast control signals between the existing AC
substations and the control system of the new converter stations on either end is required to provide quick
reaction on load variations.
The required control signals on the AC substation side are acquired with redundant ibaPADU-S systems
and transmitted through fiber optic communication to the converter control system where coupling boards
ibaLink-SM-128V-i-2o are integrated in the SIMATIC TDC racks to receive this data.
RHEINZINK
iba products in zinc
plate production
RHEINZINK is a manufacturer of state-of-the-art zinc plate for the building industry. The blank or pre-aged
material is used for roofs, fronts, drainage and solar equipment. RHEINZINK relies on ibaLogic for special
technological solutions on top of the existing automation. For instance, ibaLogic applications can be found in
the SIFLAT Flatness measurement and regulation system and the metal float control on a Hazelett casting
machine. Moreover, ibaPDA and ibaQDR are used for maintenance and quality data recording.
logi.cals +
Messfeld GmbH
Condition monitoring with ibaPADU-C
and ibaPADU-S-IT
logi.cals, a provider of automation solutions and Messfeld GmbH a service provider and consulting specialist
in the field of condition monitoring started a co-operation called House of Condition Monitoring. The goal is
to supply customized solutions for the industry based on iba measurement products. logi.cals developed its
own software solution which fits on OEM variants of the ibaPADU-C or ibaPADU-S devices. Supported by the
technological know-how of Messfeld GmbH some applications have been realized recently, such as vibration
and temperature monitoring for machine tools, cranes, pumps and motor test benches.
RWTH Aachen
University
Weaving loom
optimization with
ibaPADU-S-IT
As part of a research project at the RWTH Aachen University, Institut fr Textiltechnik (ITA), ibaPADU-S-IT and
an analog input module ibaMS16xAI-10V were selected for resolving a key problem with machines for woven
technical fabrics. The goal was to find a (self-optimizing) way to reduce the setup time of the weaving looms
after product changes. Investigations showed that the crucial factor is the warp tension in relation to speed
and weft density. The students set up different scenarios and found a solution by means of a mathematical
model. The calculation was transferred to an ibaLogic runtime application in the ibaPADU-S-IT which helps to
find the optimal setpoint for the machine.
pdv-software GmbH
Reporting with
iba and MS Excel
pdv-software GmbH, a specialist for corporate data management has introduced a solution for extensive
reporting of measured process data. The software product pdv-beas refers to iba data files (*.dat), one or
more databases and other sources in order to produce informative reports with MS Excel. Reporting is based
on Excel templates and can be automated time-controlled or event-triggered. Reports are produced as printout or pdf-file.

SMS Meer
Simulation and
testing of welder
automation with
ibaLogic and
ibaAnimation-3D
SMS Meer, a mechanical and technological supplier for plants in the steel industry decided to employ iba
products for simulation and testing of a process control application for its welding machine. Both, the goal
of reducing commissioning time and the request from many customers that only thoroughly tested software
shall be used on site require a proper simulation.
The real process control is realized with SIMATIC S7 PLC and distributed I/Os connected over Profibus. For
simulation an ibaBM-DPM-S device is used in conjunction with ibaLogic. Running in simulation mode the
ibaBM-DPM-S device is able to emulate all Profibus slaves with all the inputs and outputs the PLC will be
connected to later on site. During simulation an ibaLogic application (running on a standard PC and connected to the ibaBM-DPM-S over TCP/IP) simulates the behavior of the connected sensors and actors, such
as control pulpits, valves, drives, encoders and sensors.
The use of ibaAnimation-3D helped to visualize the process. The mechanical drawings were imported from
the CAD tool and animated by the simulated process signals via OPC connection to ibaLogic.
Siemens VAI
SIROLL ALU TCS
Visualization in
foil rolling mills
with ibaQPanel as
ActiveX
Siemens VAI, a technological supplier, presented a solution for visualization of live measured data from
ibaPDA in a rolling mill for aluminum foil. The Technological Control System (TCS) works closely together
with an ibaPDA system in terms of quality data acquisition, analysis, coil and pass scheduling, reporting and
visualization. Particularly, the online display of flatness and thickness deviation in a 2D-top-view are of interest. Nested as an ActiveX component in the operator screen of the WIN CC HMI, the ibaPDA client provides
perfect displays with an ibaQPanel view.
MAN Diesel & Turbo, a leading manufacturer of gas turbines, steam turbines and compressors decided to
employ ibaPDA for online monitoring and analysis on their turbine test benches. Mainly pressure and temperature values are measured by ibaPADU-8-M devices and Profibus sniffer ibaBM-DPM-S. ibaQPanel is used
for online display of time-based trend graphs and FFT-views. Moreover, ibaPDA is connected via a DLL plugin to MANs own Turbine Online Computer System (WinTOCS), which provides a concept for processing and
representation of statistical data. By means of ibaAnalyzers export feature the data from ibaPDA are made
available for further statistical analyses with other tools such as MatLab.
OOO Fest
Predictive chatter
detection in rolling
mills without
sensors
OOO Fest, the Russian subsidiary of Fest AG, an electrical and automation supplier, presented a mathematical solution for a well-known problem in rolling mills. So called chatter refers to unintended vibrations in
rolling mills in the range from 90 Hz to 190 Hz. The chatter occurs often spontaneously and unexpectedly and
can lead to diminished product quality or even major damage of the machinery. The reasons for chatter are
often unknown and can change at any time. Classic solutions to prevent chatter rely on vibration monitoring
and accordingly can only react when chatter already occurs. The solution of OOO Fest was developed over
years of research and applies a mathematical model which uses many process data but no vibration sensors.
The model is able to identify the energy source of the chatter (approx. 12 s prior to chatter occurrence) and
to calculate the force of the energy source. Moreover, the model is able to predict the rolling speed at which
chatter will occur and to compute the speed range where chatter is still possible. This solution, in fact, can
really prevent chatter. iba products were used over the entire research period for data acquisition and analysis
in a rolling mill.

Headquarters is growing
iba started the construction of a new building in ibas hometown Frth, Germany. The
new building, a stones throw away from the current location, will offer additional space
for the future development of the company. Initially, our computer workshop, order processing and logistics as well as a a new training center will be accommodated. Move-in
is scheduled for summer 2013.
