Description of Evidence and How it Demonstrates the Standard(s): An action research
project studying the effects of picture book reading on preschool students oral language
development requires a lot of preparation and collaboration. The paper studies student
characteristics in correlation with foundations of reading.
Implications for Future Teaching: For this particular paper, I chose to do a study of picture
book reading on oral language development. For the project, I had to pick any topic I desired in
the realm of reading instruction and complete research on the chosen topic. I chose to do this
research because of my experience with preschool-aged students and my love of picture books. I
wanted to find a correlation between the two. This project required me to reach out to local
preschool teachers and visit their classrooms. I created a picture naming test that I administered
to nine different preschool classrooms before reading them a picture book. After reading the
picture book, I readministered the same picture naming test and recorded the results from before
and after the reading of the picture book. I then wrote a professional paper using academic
research on oral language development as well as results from my own research to draw a
conclusion.
