And its as important to lay down
before Christs feet everything that is
true about us. Both our strength and
our weakness, our joy and our grief.
For it is only by laying down our
whole self that we can be wholly

it desires who we really are. And if were
not sure of who that is, then love wants
our awkward ignorance as well.
In the marriage ceremony, there is one
lovely line that I think is probably the
most important sentence in the whole
ceremony. The spouses face each
other, and each one says, With all I
am, and all I have, I honor you in the
name of God.
With all I am, and all I have, I honor
you Lord, this is how we want to give
ourselves to You. For nothing else is
worthy of You.

Joanne and Stacy make quite the team! Their
favorite things to do are read books togetherthat and play games with Stacys sister Nikki
(see above! And yes, Joanne is Nikkis mom.)
Stacy likes Disney and pink and being Auntie to
Lucas, Ohwise and Mahmet- they always make
her laugh. When Joanne isnt carousing with
Stacy, she enjoys winning at the casino (who
doesnt!), shopping at Goodwill, and going up to Wisconsin
Rapids to laugh and play games with her 6 siblings. Joanne
raised her two girls here in Dousman, and is longtime friends with
Laurie Buckett and Jim Langreder. And were pleased as punch
that youve joined us, Joanne & Stacy!

every time! For Lucas, add
playing the electric guitar

anything that has to do with puppies. They all love to go
camping and play in waterparks and do anything to burn off

Lindas goal in life is to become buff. To this end,

she swims, lifts weights, and does rehab on her
foot (you have perhaps noticed that since she
first joined us in August after her extensive foot
surgery, she has ditched the crutches!!!) When
shes not working on becoming buff, Linda is
working at a small company in Waukesha
called APT Automation. She just started working
there, and for the first time in her life, she gets to sit down at work
(which is good, since up to now shes been on crutches!)

Ashley, Aaron, Ari and
Alexandra want to make
our lives easy: they all start
with A! And they all like to
travel
and
explore
interesting places like the
Public Museum and the
Sculpture House. Ashley met
Aaron after her first year of
law school when she was studying in France. She went through
Germany and met this handsome Army Medic their second
date was in Paris And now they live in romantic
Oconomowoc! Before Ari was born, Ashley was an assistant state
attorney prosecuting domestic violence cases and Aaron was a
medic and Blackhawk pilot in Germany and Iraq. Now, Ashley is
a Feminist Fitness Fanatic (she runs boot camps!) and Aaron is
the executive director of the Health Center at Childrens
Hospital, getting his doctorate in Business Admin from
Whitewater. So when do they have time to breathe??? For
Aaron, its when he and Ari play video games on the couch
(theyre not addicts!). And for Ashley, its when she gets to
admire Alexandras dress-up and shoe collection (for Alexandra,
think Imelda Marcos!) Were so glad youre here, 4-As!

Rest in peace, Mary Ann...

Mary Ann Edwards passed away at her
home on Thanksgiving Day at the age
of 82. She was a beloved member of
Emmanuel Church since 1955. A
celebration of her life was held at
Emmanuel on November 30th with a
standing-room-only
crowd
in
attendance!
Mary Ann leaves behind her daughter,
Pam, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Those
children were the light of her life. She also leaves many family
members and cherished friends. Mary Anns husband, Howie
and her son Mark predeceased her.
We will all miss Mary Anns laughter and kindness. She was funloving and fun to be around. Mary Ann lit up the Adult Fellowship
meetings every month....as long as she was kept plied by her
beloved cup of coffee that is!
We continue our prayers for her family and friends, which include
Emmanuel family members Mary and Nancy Edwards, Ryan
Dockstader and beloved long-time friends Frieda Goetsch and
Vera Ortmann.

Singing Bowl FOR JANUARY & FEBRUARY

Camp Scholarships!

Last summer, several of our Emmanuel kids got to

go to Pilgrim Center, one of our UCC summer
camps and did they have a blast! During
January and February, the loose change offering
in the Singing Bowl will go to camp scholarships so
more of our kids can go this year!

Thank you all for signing up so quickly for hosting the meal slots.
The overnight camping experiences are more challenging to
fill. If you think you might be able to sleep over in a warm/dry
church with a bed (not a sleeping bag on the floor) but need to
come later than 8:00 P.M. or leave earlier than 7:15 A.M. the next
morning, either Sue or I can accommodate you. Just ask!
I hope you enjoyed meeting David Tennyck, Family Promise
Executive Director, and hearing about the program and the gift
you give when hosting our homeless guests. Thanks to all who
play a part in providing a temporary home for those in need.

Mitten, Angel Tree & Vet Bags Projects

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the gifts for others
this year through the Angel Tree and Vet Bag programs (for
veterans in their homeless program). 25 VERY FULL gift bags were

delivered by Kathy Zebrowski to the Zablocki VA Center in

Milwaukee
This year we sponsored gift cards and gifts via the Angel Tree for
two families: A mom and dad with three children (ages 4
months to 6 years), and a single Mom with two children (ages 7
& 10). The parents were so appreciative to see all the gifts and
were effusive with their words of gratitude. There were at least
four presents for each child, some toys and some needed
clothes.
Also, we had 6 shut ins this year that received cards, plants,
cookies and/or visits. Thanks to everyone who shared their
Christmas spirit with our long time members.

The Sanctuary Mitten Tree was FULL of

hand-knit mittens and hats thanks to
Kathy Zebrowskis extraordinary talent
and energy. These will be donated to
the Hope Center in Waukesha to keep
those in need warm this winter. THANK
YOU Kathy and everyone who donated
yarn to keep her busy!

January 6 marks
the
Christian
season
of
Epiphanythe
Festival of Lights.
Many
other
cultures have festivals of light as darkness shrouds the earth; and
the intentions of our festivals are remarkably similar. The Hindu
festival of Diwali, their festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of
light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil,
and hope over despair. Does that sound familiar?
For Christians, the light in the darkness is Jesus- the one who by
word and example teaches us that our lives are to be lights
shining brightly to bring lightknowledge good hope into a
world that cries out for light. The tale our Jewish sisters and
brothers tell sounds like gospel to me: When you look into the
face of a human being, and have enough light to recognize
them as your sister or brother, then the Dawn has come.

And I said to the man

Who stood at the gate of the year:
Give me a light that I may
Tread safely into the unknown!
And he replied:
Go out into the darkness
And put thine hand into
The Hand of God.
That shall be to thee better
Than light and safer than
A known way.

16 Reasons I Love
Jesus
This year the Board of Stewards asked our members to share
answers to 6 statements that were reasons they love Jesus. We
received so many thoughtful, heartfelt, thankful and sometimes
painful responses to these questions that we feel it important to
share some of these with the congregation.
2. Because when other people cant forgive me, Jesus does

It brings an inner peace and rest; I can go on when

feeling unforgiven.

Ive learned forgiveness is a wonderful thing. When you

forgive, it is a healing for you.

Jesus love and forgiveness is unearned and

unconditional, mine should be also.

I have a bitter and uptight sister and I cant change

her- only soften my heart towards her.

It makes me feel good to know that even though Im

not perfect, Im forgiven.

But can I learn to forgive myself?

When my family doesnt accept me/love me, Jesus

does.

Thank God someone does.

3. He ate with sinners and outcasts, the poor and the sick, which
means there is room at the table for us

I am one of these, I know.

This teaches me to be kind and respectful and to

include ALL people.

Yes!

We are all sinners; there is always room for us all.

I know I am accepted as I am which gives me freedom

to be myself and work towards improvement.

I love that there is room in our church for everyone.

In my youth I started to run amuck- I believe He has

forgiven me and welcomed me back.

We are all his people

7. I love Jesus because he descended into hell, and Ive been
there too.

Physical pain and heartache.

The journey will bring me closer to Him, He who has a

plan, even if I dont understand it.

Hes been with me all the time.

That means Jesus knows what we all have gone

through, and he knows how to fix it.

Knowing Jesus suffered as many humans suffer in life

helps me to realize he is with me, understands me and
holds me close through troubled times.

Life is hard but our reward is to one day be in Heaven

with Jesus.

He gives love to go on no matter what falls in my life

I hope I can remember to forgive and not hold

grudges.

He descended into hell to preach to the hopeless then

rose again into heaven. He did this to show His power
over death and hopelessness.

Thank God Ive never been in such a bad situation.

Annual Congregational Meeting

January 29

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Annual Meeting of

the Congregation after worship on January 29th. Report booklets
containing reports from all of the Boards & Committees, Officers
and the Pastor will be handed out the Sunday before. Please
bring yours to the meeting. The Annual Report will also contain

financial reports, 2017 Coffee Committee assignments, the 2017

budget and an up-to-date Membership/Friends address/phone
listing.
You will have an opportunity to ask questions on anything
contained in the Annual Report (or anything else for that
matter!). This is the point when all the reports are voted into
permanent record for the church. We will also be voting on 2017
Officer positions. The Church Council has decided to set aside
the Constitution (in part) for 2017 and try a Ministry Team
approach to the church governance. This will be explained at
the meeting. It does mean that for the most part, Board and
Committee elections will not be held for 2017 as they normally
have been in the past. This mode of operation will require
people-at-large from the congregation to volunteer to help in
the various areas of church life formerly handled by Board
Members....more about that on January 29th!

CHURCH SCHOOL
In December, the Sunday school kids did a Christmas
Mannequin challenge while learning the story of Jesus birth.
Check it out on the Emmanuel Facebook site! The kids practiced
singing Silent Night and Jingle Bells for church childrens choir as
well. The Single-Digits kids also made a manger ornament.
WAKE U WITH GOD January 8th!
Come to our Famous, Wonderful Annual WAKE UP WITH GOD on
January 8th at 9:30 during church!! Kids wear their pajamas or
comfy clothes to church, eat breakfast together, and go
through different stations of activities. All ages are welcome!! This
years theme is MOSES! Things to bring: Pillow, blankets, stuffed
friends, neighbors, family, and friends. Also optional: bring a plain
pillow case or one that you have had previous years for this
years special stamp.
January through February the Sunday School kids will be filming
our annual movie!!! All kids are encouraged to be in the movie,
more details to follow. This years movie is based on the Story of
Moses!!
