The story goes like this: One ce day, during the reign of King Stephen, 1135-1154 AD, a young boy and girl were found crying in the pits used to trap wolves in the E village of Woolpit, in Suffolk. They spoke a strange unintelligible ® language, but even stranger was their skin, which was green. A local nobleman cared for them, but the strange children refused to eat anything but green beans. Sadly, the hoy died less than a year later. Over time, the girl lost her skin's green tint and, after picking up the local language, told the villagers that she and the boy had come from country called “St. Martin’s Land’, where there was no sun. They had been following their sheep and entered an underground passageway that, on the other side, opened into the bright sunlight of Woolpit. This story was a mystery for many years. Some thought the children were fairies, due to their green skin and preference for green beans —the food of the dead, according to Celtic myth. Recently, though, a ] more reasonable interpretation has been put forward: a medieval earl in Norfolk, guardian to tivo young children, tried unsuccessfully to poison ‘them with arsenic and then abandoned them on the Norfolk-Suffolk border in Waymand Wood. Here, he thought, they would surely perish, allowing him to take control of the estate that they were due to inherit when they reached adulthood. These were probably the green children who were later found stil alive but disorientated and ill. It is worth noting that arsenic poisoning can cause chlorosis, in which the skin turns green. Such a diet-related origin for their green skin would also explain why the git’s complexion returned to normal once she began to eat proper food. The story's other elements may also have simple explanations. For instance, a few miles northwest of Woolpit is a village called Fornham St. Martin— possibly “St, Martin's Land”. Further north is Thetford Forest, whose dark interior would certainly seem sunless to two young children lost there. The forest also contains many Neolithic flint mines and associated passages. Perhaps the youngsters entered one of them, which led to Woolpit. 41. It is clear from the passage that the 3. It is implied in the passage that, the children’s skin was green ....... green ....... Born Margaret Lucas in 1623, she became Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, upon her marriage in 1645. An aristocrat, Cavendish was also a poet, philosopher, essayist, and playwright. She published her own work under her own name at a time when most females published only anonymously. Her writing addressed a great number of topics, and she wrote extensively in the male- dominated field of natural philosophy—which is what science G was called in her day. In fact, she was often accused of writing too much, among other things: her contemporary Samuel 4 Pepys, for example, called her “mad, conceited and a ridiculous". Cavendish was not afraid to counter such criticisms: in the preface to her 1666 work Observations upon Experimental Philosophy, she says that some have called her habit of writing prolifically a disease, but that this is a disease she shares with such wise peopie as Homer and Aristotle, both of whom wrote very much. She further remarks that it is an honour for a woman of high ambition, such as herself, to be afflicted with such a noble disease. in the main part of the same work, Cavendish supported and even revised the political thought of her contemporary Thomas Hobbes at a time when it was actually hazardous to do so, as Hobbes’ thought was opposed by many in the government. Another interesting thing about Observations upon Experimental Philosophy is that Cavendish published it together with a fictional companion piece called The Blazing World. This work is a depiction of a utopian empire that can be reached via the North Pole, and is nowadays seen as one of the earliest works of science fiction. At the end of this book, Cavendish calis herself the "Empress" of the philosophical world; it was just this sort of pride that made Samuel Pepys and others think that she was conceited. Whether she was conceited or not, however, she was in many ways one of the most advanced moral thinkers of her time. For instance, not only did she protest against the hunting of animals for sport, but she also questioned the idea of eating meat at all. 1.
