Acute bronchitis

In bronchitis, areas of the bronchial wall become inflamed and swollen, and mucus
increases. As a result, the air passageway is narrowed. Bacteria and viruses are usually
present. Symptoms lasting up to 90 days are usually classified as acute bronchitis.
Infectious bronchitis can be caused by infection or exposure to irritants. However, acute
bronchitis occurs most often during the winter and is most often caused by viruses.
Smokers and people who have chronic lung diseases may have repeated attacks of acute
bronchitis because mucus is less able to drain from their airways. Malnutrition may
increase the risk of upper respiratory tract infections and subsequent acute bronchitis,
especially in children and older people.
