CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
Wearing helmet has been made compulsory in most of the cities in India. Most of the
accidental deaths happening in our country are due to carelessness of the riders. Our country
is democratic and so there are a lot of opinions about everything thats happened around us.
When people say something is good for public. There are always some people to oppose even
if they make good sense. Safety is one of the main aspect that should be kept in mind while
riding two wheelers .As most of us has turned into making a busy living, everybody wants to
reach their destination as fast they could .The main cause of road accidents are due to
carelessness of the riders .Even though there are many sign boards and warnings indicated on
the roads accidents happen in the same place. A helmet works like your skull which is made
from fiber glass. The inside of a helmet is lined with expanded polystyrene of controlled
density .When the helmet is struck with a hard surface the inner lining act as buffer and
absorbs the shock.

There are some limitations:Of course there are a few disadvantages of wearing a helmet .Our head wont get fresh air
and make it little un-comfortable while riding ,The most important disadvantage of wearing
the helmet is the cause of dandruffs and loss of hairs .This is one of the serious issue that
most of the riders facing while wearing helmet. Fortunately, the designers are coming out
with the new ideas in the helmet for making the circulation of air inside .If there is a smooth
flow of air around the head, then we feel comfortable. I am not sure whether such helmets are
out in market or not but research is going on.
Even though there are a few disadvantages in wearing the helmets, we should practice the
habit of wearing helmet .After all our life is more important. Traffic accident is the most
concerning problem we are facing today. The figure of the accident had become increasing
and most of people are injured and died from day to day. To solve their problem, government
of Cambodia especially the capital of Phnom Penh has been introduced all Khmer people to
wear helmet. In my opinion, wearing helmet provides us some benefits for some reasons.
Wearing helmet helps to reduce traffic accident. People will pay enough attention while they
are driving their motors if they wear helmet. Moreover, it helps us in protecting our eyes from
the dust or terrible lights from others vehicles because we dont need to use our hand or
fingers to clean it while we are controlling our vehicles.

Wearing helmet helps you to oblige your duty as a real citizen. Wearing helmet is the law;
someone who broke it would be fine by the police. People who wears helmet will become the
responsible person because they obey the traffic law and traffic lights. It is the waste of time
and money if police fine you. So, being a person you must have a sense of responsibility.
Helmet helps you to protect your life. While you are controlling your vehicle on the roads
you would face a lot of problems especially accident by wearing helmet can protect your
head from danger. Head is the most important part for everyone. If our heads have problem
we cant do anything, or sometimes it can cause to be abnormal or crazy or ever dead.
Wearing helmet is very useful for us especially our lives protected. We cant buy our lives but
we can prevent it by wearing helmet as Khmer proverb say Prevention is better than cure.
Together wear helmet I believe that our country will be in safety, peace and development.

DRIVING LICENSE:The central government states that any individual who operates a motor vehicle in a public
place must have a valid driving license issued by RTO
Two types of driving licence are used in India ;a learners license and permanent license .A
learners licence is required before a permanent license issued ,unless the applicant already
has a valid driving license from another country .
There are three types of permanent license issued in India;
1. Motorcycle license
2. Light motor vehicle
3. Heavy motor vehicle
Driving licenses are issued in India by the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
To get a learners license you have to visit your local RTO office. To get your learner license,
the following documents are required.
1. Duly filed application form.
2. Medical fitness form signed by medical examiner certifying you have no medical
problems that will interfere in your ability to drive.
3. Proof of your current address in India.
4. Proof of your age.
5. Three passport size photographs.

Traffic Rules and Regulations:-

Just as everything and every institution require a set of I rules, traffic also needs rules in order
to remain orderly I and disciplined. The question that next arises in our minds is that, what is
the necessity of rules?
It is necessary to have rules everywhere in order to make the functioning smooth and
efficient. If there were to be no rules then, it would be a picture of total chaos and confusion.
Rules regulate the work and help it move along the desired path. Thus, in order to have a
smooth movement of traffic on the roads, the traffic rules are made by the traffic police.
These rules are meant to be followed to the last word by each and every individual moving on
the roads, and becoming a part of the traffic. It is necessary to have rules for the road, but it is
still more important for all of us to follow the set of rules. Once an individual is on the road,
it is absolutely compulsory for him/her to follow the rules, and that also explicitly.
We have just got to follow rules because, without following them there will be absolute chaos
and confusion on the road, and no one will be able to move about. This chaos would lead not
only to delays in movements but would also lead to struggles and even accidents.
When, for example we are supposed to cross the road from the zebra crossing, we must make
sure that we do so, for, if we cross from elsewhere, there is a chance that we meet with an
accident. If we jump a red light we are putting ourselves to danger and are inviting trouble
with the possibility of an accident.
Thus, rules must be followed for maintaining discipline on the roads, and above all for our
own safety. It is in our own interest that, when on the road, we follow the road traffic rules to
the last word. The rules are there to keep us safe, and following them is in our own interest.
When we break the rules we are inviting trouble to ourselves and doing no harm to anyone
else.
The traffic rules in India are as strict as they are anywhere else in the world. However, the
difference between the rules outside India and the rules in India is basically just one. That is
the rules in foreign countries are followed, and here in India they are broken day in and day
out. Besides having more or less the same rules, over here we Indians have an instinct to
break all laws and rules. That instinct is so very vivid on the Indian roads. Traffic rules are
stringent but, when they are not followed, what is the use.

Besides, another major difference between foreign countries and Indians in this matter is,
when a person in a foreign land breaks any traffic rule, he is punished according to the set
rules. Here in India, the punishment is also there but, no one gets punished for flouting the
road rules. When rules are there and are broken with impunity and no one can do anything
about it, there is utter confusion. That is the exact situation in India. The roads of at least the
Metros look like racing tracks, with cars and other vehicles just rushing to where - God alone
knows. There is a speed limit for different categories of vehicles but, who follows the norms?
Thus, in India, rules are the same and as stringent as elsewhere but there, in other countries
the rules are strictly followed but in India they are strictly broken.
This is the basic difference in the traffic rules and the following of them. A road for instance
in Delhi looks a motley picture of confusion and chaos, and this, because everyone is making
the road a racing track instead of using it as a road. Traffic in other countries appears to be
more disciplined because these rules are followed and here in India they are not followed.
This is exactly why rules are made, and they are made to be followed, and not to be broken as
in India.

Safety Measures While Riding Bike:There are several considerations that you have to make before you allow your child to ride a
bike to school. First of all, how old is your child? Under the age of at least twelve, a parent or
guardian should accompany the child to school, no matter how safe the area where you live
is. You also have to take into account the traffic conditions, and the safety of the crosswalks
on the route to school. If you live in a big city, then sending your child to school on his or
her bicycle is a potentially dangerous plan. After considering these factors, if you determine
that riding a bike to school is still an option for your child, there are additional precautions
that you must take to ensure his or her safety.
Wearing a high-quality helmet is absolutely essential. There should be no debate on this
matter, regardless of how short the trip is. Many children complain that helmets are
uncomfortable or unattractive, but wearing one must be a non-negotiable condition for riding
a bike. If you have noticed that there are several neighborhood children who have been riding
bikes without helmets, you should talk to their parents. It might seem intrusive, but in reality,
10

they probably asked their child to wear a helmet, and they would appreciate your telling them
that their child was not wearing one. If they become defensive, and you discover that a childs
parents are advocating bike riding without a helmet, then at least you tried. It is extremely
unsafe to ride without a helmet, and it could lead to severe head injury or death. Too many
parents have learned this lesson the hard way to allow this to be a negotiable issue. It is also
critical that the helmet is worn properly that it is the right size, and that it is tightly fastened
each time your child wears it. Do not let your child just throw the helmet on without fastening
the straps that renders the helmet virtually ineffective. Talk to your children about the
importance of this safety measure, and explain that you are trusting that he or she will not
deceive you by taking off the helmet while riding.
Make sure that your childs bike is the right size for him or her. If the bike is too big, your
child is going to be prone to accidents and spills. If the bike is the right size, your child
should be able to touch his toes to the ground enough to maintain balance while sitting on the
seat. As your child grows, continue checking the seat level on the bike. If it is too low, then
your child will be riding in an awkward position that is not as safe. The bike should also be
adorned with reflective materials, a helmet, and fully-functional brakes. Attach a basket that
is large enough for his school supplies to the bike, so that his or her hands are on the
handlebars at all times. If your child will be riding early in the morning when the sun has not
fully risen, then the bike should also have a headlight.
Your child should eat a healthy breakfast so that he or she is alert and awake on the ride to
school. It is important that your child stays attentive to any hazards that may be in his or her
path, such as a dog or a pothole. You should also make your child wear bright, reflective
clothing, or at the very least a reflective jacket. Verify that your child knows to ride on the
right-hand side of the street riding on the same side as traffic makes it easier for motorists
to see bikers. You also have to teach your child about looking both ways before crossing a
street, and using hand signals when appropriate. Rather than riding the bike across streets, tell
your child to walk the bike across, and then resume riding once across. If your child rides to
school with a group of neighborhood friends, make sure that they are all aware of the rule to
ride in a single file line, not in a side-by-side group, or even two-by-two. Do not permit your
child to listen to music while riding they need all of their senses to be working towards the
same task: getting to school safely. Take the trip with your child for the first week or so to
ensure that he or she is following all the safety rules better safe than sorry.

RESEARCH DESIGN
TYPE OF RESEARCH ADOPTED:- Descriptive
Research design is simply a framework or plan for a study, used as a guide in collecting and
analyzing data.

DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH DESIGN:The Descriptive research design study is typically concerned with determining the frequency
with which something occurs or the relationship between two variables.

METHODOLOGY
The Objective of the present study can be accomplished by conducting a systematic survey.

The Research Objective:- The objective of the research is to determine the

weather the youth is wearing helmet or not and analysis of helmet awareness.
The methodology used for the collection of data is by physically of the YMCA
junction and interviewing their concerned town members.

Data collection: It consists of two kinds of data

Primary data
Secondary data.

Primary Data:-

Primary data is the data that is generated by the researcher for the specific

purpose of research situation at hand. The primary data was collected through survey. Information
was collected based on the answers given by the respondents. Data also includes personal discussion
13

with concerned heads to obtain basic information. The data is mainly collected physically only i.e. by
going to the company and personally interviewing their officials and finding out their movements.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE
Population

: Members of YMCA junction.

Sample size

: 50

Sampling Technique : Simple Random Sampling was used.

Data Collection Tool : Structured questionnaire with closed ended questions.
Data Analysis: Excel charts (pie-charts) were used for data analysis and presentation.
Secondary Data: Secondary data is already published data collected for some purposes other than
confronting the researcher at a given point of time. The secondary data was collected from different
books and different web sites. Data is collected from various websites, books, journals etc.

QUESTIONNAIRE :A questionnaire consists of a number of questions presented to respondents for their answers.
The questionnaire is varying flexible in that there are many numbers of ways to ask
questions. A survey is conducted on the helmet awareness at YMCA junction. People will be
required to fill the questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised of 19 questions covering the
various avenues/aspects of toilet facilities and sanitation.

LIMITATIONS
1. Time Constraint:- This survey study requires a long span of time to do more
elaborative study but because of having lengthy syllabus and tight schedule, lack of
time being a limiting factor.
2. Sample Size:- This is an emerging topic now days, so sample size is not sufficient, it
should be 100 in one town to get more effective results.
3. A limited time period allocated for the survey was not sufficient to analyze the
awareness on helmet.
4. There was possibility of collecting biased options from the respondents.
5. Some of the people were not willing to provide the information.

to the back sitting person.

SUGGESTIONS
I would like to suggest the public to wear helmet.
I would suggest to public to make license and drive two wheelers.
I would suggest to respondents not to feel helmet as a luggage because it is safe to
wear while driving.
I would like to suggest the respondents to know the traffic rules and try to drive the
vehicles.
I would like to suggest the respondents to not to violate the traffic rules while
driving.
I would strongly suggest the respondents not to run off from the police instead pay
the penalty.
I would to suggest the back sitting person to wear helmet.

32

CONCLUSION
According to my study I have found that few respondents are not wearing helmet through this
project, I am creating awareness among the youth to wear helmets. Wearing helmet may not
lead death of individual .Individuals are advised to wear helmet and should not treat it as
luggage and should not treat like helmet wearing leads to hair fall. Through this project I
want to convey to make license and then to know the traffic rules .Helmet wearing may save
the life of individual.
