INTRODUCTION

The Safe Habitat at the southern end of the Angel Topsides facility is provided with blast-resistant walls
on the north, east and west faces.
A 50 kPa blast wall spans between the decks of the Safe Habitat just north of and parallel to Grid D.
The east and west faces of the Safe Habitat have each been provided with blast walls that are capable
of resisting a 10 kPa blast.
The south face of the Safe Habitat is required to withstand environmental loads only. It is not blast
rated.
A firewall is provided between the cellar and sub-cellar decks on Row A east of Grid 3.

DYNAMIC LOAD FACTORS AT SUPPORTS

The blast wall on the north face of the Safe Habitat is required to resist a blast overpressure of 50 kPa
with a load-time history idealised as an isosceles triangle. The blast wall manufacturer has designed
the wall panels to respond elastically.
The dynamic end reactions for an elastic response are dependent on the ratio between the blast
duration, td, and the natural period of the wall panels, T.
The Topside Design Brief, Reference [1], requires that the blast wall be designed for a range of
durations for this pressure pulse.
A maximum dynamic load factor (DLF) of up to 1.5 may occur when the period of the blast pulse
approximately equals the natural period of the wall panels. Since the Topside Design Brief, Reference
[1], requires that the wall panels resist a range of blast durations, it is probable that this critical
amplification will be encountered. The supports were therefore designed to resist the 50 kPa blast load
multiplied by the maximum possible DLF of 1.5

SUPPORTS TO BOTTOMS OF BLAST WALL PANELS

The supports at the bottoms of all of the wall panels of the blast wall are similar. The blast wall vendors
detail for the bottoms of the panels is illustrated in Detail 1 on Booth drawing T3000XG014.0001, and is
reproduced below:

The Booth detail was modified by addition of a 200 x 10 thick inclined bracing plate and UB203x133x30
under-deck beam as illustrated below.

Checking Welds Between UB203x133x30 and Stringers

The UB203x133x30 under the angle and brace-plate assembly provides a load path for the vertical
reactions Va and Vb to the deck stringers.
Vertical reactions Va and Vb are transferred to the web of the UB305x165x40 stringers by vertical 6mm
fillet welds along the flanges of the UB203x133x30 beams on its side as illustrated in Figure 3 below.

Checking Cellar Deck Stringer Span = 5750mm:
Minimum size of deck stringer on cellar deck is UB304x165x40
The concentrated bending moment applied to the stringer by the wall support detail is
P x 0.15 = 200 x 0.15 = 30 kNm
From Reference [2], the self weight of the Type 1 profile with liner and insulation = 65.5 kg/m2
? For 5.3m high panels, the blast wall applies 5.3 x 65.5 = 347 kg/m = 3.4 kN/m to the wall support
detail on the upper mezzanine deck.
The cellar deck north of the blast wall is grated and therefore subject to a blast wind load rather than an
overpressure load. (NB: It is conservative to assume this since the moment applied by the wall panel
acts in the opposite direction to moment due to blast on wall panel)? The blast wind applied to the
stringer = 26.25 kPa x 1m spacing = 26.25 kN/m

Checking Spanning Between Stringers

The bracket detail is required to span a maximum 1000mm between stringers.
The 8mm deck plate provides continuous lateral restraint to the detail as shown in the preceding
calculations. The detail is therefore required to resist torsion due to the eccentricity of the horizontal
load from the deck plate.
The angle, brace plate and under-deck beam form a torsionally rigid box as illustrated below:

Checking Bending in 200x150x16 Bent Angle

The maximum dynamic end reaction at the tip of the 200x150x16 bent angle,
P = 50 x 1.5 x 3.22 / 2 = 120.8 kN/m
Max bending moment in angle, M = 120.8 x 0.15 + 50 x 1.5 x 0.152/2 = 18.8 kNm/m
Mill certificates for this material (Refer Appendix C) indicate a yield stress Fy = 307 MPa
Booths calculations, Reference [2], specify a strain rate enhancement factor of 1.29 for this blast load.
Therefore the dynamic yield stress for this material, Fyd = 1.29 x 307 = 396 MPa

Checking 200x150x16 Angle

OK by inspection since height of wall panels supported is less than those checked previously (Refer
Section 4.1).
Checking Horizontal Spanning of Wall Support Between Braces
The maximum spacing between such supports is 3.17m (See T3000DS323.1008) This is less than the
previously checked span of 3.435m checked for the same height wall panels in Section 4.2 above.
The plate girder to which the 200x150x16 angle is attached is a PG02 which has a wider flange and is
therefore stronger than the PG01 checked in Section 4.2
By inspection the detail has sufficient capacity to span between the braces.

Checking Bending in Deck Stringers:
The blast load on support angles and on the web of the PG02 are transferred to the deck plate at main
deck level via the gusset and deck stringers. The eccentricity of the load application from the deck plate
induces a bending moment in the deck stringers.
The maximum spacing between the deck stringers on the main deck is 1000mm and the minimum
stringer size is UB406x178x54.

This maximum bending moment occurs at the southern end of the deck stringers and decreases linearly
along the length of the member.
The UB406x54s span 4.75m between primary girders and are also required to support operating loads
on the main deck. The main deck above these stringers is a laydown area with maximum operating
load of 25 kPa. Applying a reduction factor of 0.33 to the maximum live load as per Reference [5], the
live load UDL = 25 x 0.33 = 8.25 kPa
Assuming a dead load UDL of 1.75 kPa, the total downward acting UDL = 10 kPa
?This results in a maximum bending moment at mid-span of 10 x 4.752 / 8 = 28.2 kNm but negligible
bending at the ends of the stringers.
The total bending moment at mid-span = 28.2 + 265.2 / 2 = 160.8 kNm
? At mid-span, maximum fb

151MPa and is OK by inspection.

NB: Have conservatively ignored the fact that the blast would also apply an upward load on the deck
which would counter the bending in the stringers due to the blast load on the wall and to deck loads.
