Document Title : GLASS CALCULATION FOR P1 STORY COLUMNS

1. SCOPE
In this document a glass structure with bolted joints was modeled and analyzed. The Glass
consists of one tempered glass layer.
A 3D finite analysis has been carried out using ABAQUS version 6.10. Local stress
concentrations, occurring for instance close to bolt holes, and the brittle characteristic of glass
has been considered.

2. DESIGN DATA
2.1 MATERIAL
Glass
Density: 2500 Kg/cm2
Elastic Modulus: 7E+10 Pa
Poisson Ratio: 0.23
Strength: 100 MPa Breaking

2.1.1 Material Setting in This case:

One Glass Layer with 10 mm thickness.

2.2. MODELING
Structural 3D model by ABAQUS
Glass layer that composed from one layer (one 10 mm Glass layer) has been modeled.
Glass Sheet dimension is 1400 mm as width and 4500 mm as Height.
Hole Size is 30 mm and edge distance is 100 mm.
For boundary conditions, assumed that glass sheet is hanged from 3 support point at above
with 550 mm distance. At bottom of glass sheet, only controlling lateral displacement.

3. LOADS
3.1 LOAD CASES
Dead load - Weight of materials forming the permanent part of the Glass.
Self-weight of modeled steel elements is automatically considered by ABAQUS software.
The specific weight of Glass sheet is taken as 2500 kg/m3.
For reaching to actual model, mentioned layer should be under effect of gravity so
gravity.

4. MESH
Based on a short parametric study on the mesh size, the 40 mm mesh size was found adequate
for modeling the Glass. Near the hole, a fine mesh with 6 mm size was considered.

5.3 Result
According to result of analysis of glass under applying loads, Maximum stress and maximum
deflection is under allowable stress and deflection limitation.
Note: The Glass Mechanical-Structural behavior at temporary and continual loads will be under
effect of various items, so its not possible to modeling full and perfect glass behavior in finite
element today software. But in this simulation tried to analysis glass sheet based on elastic and
isotropic material behavior, so prepared analytic finite element model present result of
displacement and stress, closed to reality as possible.
