In China he served under Admiral Constant Louis Jean Benjamin Jaurs, who had succeeded
Admiral Proted (killed near Shanghai, 17 May 1862). Jaurs is better remembered for service
around Japan, being present at the Bombardment of Shimonoseki (1863) and the Boshin War
(1868-1869). Following the Namamugi incident, it would seem most likely that Julhiet was
present at the Franco-Anglo-Japanese conference on the French ship Smiramis, 2 July 1863.
