Input Wanted:
ON ROCKAWAY RESILIENCY PROJECTS
By Katie McFadden

How should the city spend

$100 to $120 million on Rockaway resiliency projects? You can
have a say.
On December 12, the Parks Department held a meeting to present nine projects that are eligible
for FEMA funding which is left
over from the boardwalk project.
This amount may be anywhere
from $100 to $120 million. The
projects aim to incorporate resiliency and recovery aspects. Many
of the proposed projects stem
from the HPD Resilient Edgemere Initiative and the Rockaway
Parks Conceptual Plan.
The proposed projects are as
follows:
1) Renovate the community
park in Bayswater. This $50 to $60
million project would include
a raised berm with a trail, permeable pavement, stormwater
retention, shoreline bank stabilization, wetland and coastal

forest restoration, plus new athletic fields, sports courts, a kayak

launch, a refurbished comfort
station and more.
2) Raised shorelines in Edgemere, which would protect
against sea level rise and tidal
flooding. The $20 to $30 million project includes a vegetated
berm along the perimeter of the
peninsula, a new bulkhead on
the bay and a drainage study to
discover other ways to mitigate
flooding problems in Edgemere.
3) Renovate Rockaway Community Park on Beach 59th. This
$40 to $50 million project includes raising the berm along the
east and west edges of the park,
shoreline bank stabilization and
wetland restoration, plus game
tables, athletic fields, a skate
park, a picnic area, a comfort station, and a kayak launch.
4) Create a new waterfront park
at Thursby Basin Park around
Beach 62nd Street. This $20 to
$30 million project would in-

clude a seawall, rain garden and

waterfront plantings, plus sports
courts, a play area, a water feature and a kayak launch.
5) Reconstructing Parks maintenance and operations facility
around Beach 72nd Street. This
$20 to $30 million project would
reconstruct and elevate the facility that services 130 park areas
through Rockaway and Broad
Channel and provides emergency response services during
storm season.
6) Create a new waterfront
park at Beach 88th. This $40
to $50 million project would
include a seawall, wetland
restoration, invasive species
removal and native plant introduction, as well as a comfort
station, kayak dock, a shade
structure, picnic seating and a
play area.
7) A gateway corridor along
Beach 94th and Beach 95th
Street. This $20 to $30 million
project would include permea-

ble pavement, bioswales to absorb stormwater, and the area

could be used for markets, festivals and caf seating.
8) Build recreation areas
around Shore Front Parkway.
This $20 to $30 million project
would include a performance
space, a dog run, an athletic
field, a rock climbing course, a
playground and a seating area.
9) Build new comfort stations
at Beach 116th and Beach 59th
Street. This $30 to $40 million
project would include buildings
and utilities that are elevated.
The Parks Department is
accepting public input on
these proposals until January
8, 2017. Check out all of the
proposals at https://www.nycgovparks.org/pagefiles/110/
Rockaway-Resilienc y-Projects__5854562518868.pdf. Select the projects that you think
should be funded and send all
feedback to alexander.maureau@parks.nyc.gov.

Oops.
Car Has Its Own Gas Hose

You know how it is with holiday shopping. Its easy to get

distracted. In some cases, really
distracted. Weve seen people
drive with full cups of coffee
on the roof of their car but this
was something else. Our investigative team got to work. Well,
not really, we just spoke with
Maureen Harkins, the driver,
who was a good sport about the
whole thing. It was the holidays,
her mother had recently died
and ... these things happen.
On last Wednesday morning
she went to the BP gas station
on Beach Channel Drive and
Beach 100th Street. She went to
the full service pump and asked
the guy to fill er up. A friend
pulled into the adjacent gas lane
and they chatted a bit. Maureen
thought the attendant hit the car
signaling it was ok to leave. She
bid her friend a Merry Christmas, cranked up the radio, and

drove away.
Drove away, she did. Gas
hose attached to the car but no
longer to the tank at the station.
With radio blasting, she headed
home to her Shore Front Parkway building.
As she arrived, a lady waved
at her saying something about
a hose. Maureen thought she
might be a bit daft and was going to ignore her but curiosity
made her get out of the car for a
look. Oh, no.
You could just imagine my
emotions when I saw the nozzle, Maureen told us. Fright.
Severe embarrassment. And
then hysterical laughter! She
put the nozzle and hose in the
trunk of her car hoping no one
was witnessing this from their
terraces (and having no idea
there was already photographic
evidence). She returned to the
gas station, expressing apolo-

gies, and a smiling and forgiving

attendant said it was ok.
Three cheers for this guys
holiday spirit! And three cheers

for Maureen who took some ribbing when the photo was posted on our Facebook page. Were
just glad it wasnt us.

Chewing On Resolutions
Wait. I have to pause my typing
to stuff another holiday goodie into
my overused mouth. Its a joyful
time but my keyboard looks pretty sad as its sprinkled with cookie crumbs and a stray Ghirardelli
chocolate wrapper.
As the song goes, its the fat-fat-fat
fattest time of the year.
Its that time of year when Ive got
more chins than a Chinese phonebook. I mean, when you tie your
shoelaces or god-forbid try to get
something under the tree, you just

dont want witnesses as you struggle. The midsection gets in the way
but it really feels like your head
might just pop off and roll away.
Youre a balloon and the airs trying
to get out.
Moments later, when air pressure
has stabilized in your cabin, you revert back to holiday cheer and calm
your nerves with another piece of
chocolate or a cookie. Usually both.
By the way, there are a lot of chins
in a Chinese phone book so I dont
think that was being insensitive. I

did a quick Google search and it

seems the Chinese like the old joke
just fine and if anything they are
more concerned with the growing
chins on their people. China has
200 million fat people and 100 million of them are obese. But I digress
(with a raspberry filled cookie).
You never know whose feelings
youre going to bruise or whose
feelings somebody else is gonna
stick up for which brings me to
this weeks snack stopper. The son
who will remain nameless is back
from his semester in Ireland. He
seems fine other than dropping
an occasional f-bomb like hes
still in Dublin. Anyway, it seems
the easily offended have made
their way to Ireland --- though I
dont think they stand a chance.
Irelands a place where anybody
who gets defensive or indignant
gets a reflexive response: Oh
please, get over yourself.
When some suggested American
Indian outfits were offensive to wear
on Halloween the stores quickly sold
out of the costumes. Sometimes the
battle between the offending and
the offended is a tad one sided, as
illustrated in one of the last emails I
got from the nameless son:

Page 5
Cathal convinced a blue haired
girl (you know what that means
...easily triggered) that leprechauns are actually real and are
an ethnic minority in Ireland and
are currently petitioning for more
rights because they don't have
the right to vote and are currently being subjected to laws similar
to that of Jim Crow in the South.
The girl believed every word and
thought it was an atrocity.
Apparently Cathal made it quite
the elaborate tale. The leprechauns
were beaten up because they were
little and because they lived at the
end of the rainbow theyd had their
gold stolen over and over by invading armies and big people bandits.
So if you hear of a movement to
give Leprechauns more rights you
can blame it on Cathal (it aint said
like its spelled). With his story telling he sounds like hes from Rockaway but hed have a nickname. His
name is too much work. Hope hes
not offended.
Whew, typing this was rough.
Gotta go get me a treat. Maybe
something sweet, followed by
something salty. Happy New Year.
My resolution? I promise not to offend.

fewer babies are delivered during

common day of the year to deliver
babies is September 16.

Blessings
The lights have been on, the
bells have been ringing, the presents given and unwrapped. So
much preparation goes into the
holidays and then it seems like it
passes so quickly and we are beginning a new cycle. Its worth
reflecting upon what the season
has brought us, besides boxes
that need to be ripped up and
put out to the trash.
There are the assorted ugly
sweaters, the odd and useless
gifts that will take up room in our
homes until we either figure out
how to give them to someone
else or quietly slip them in the
garbage bin without the giver
seeing us. Having been ridiculed
by my family for years for the
one strand of lights that I hopelessly crossed back and forth on
the outside of my house, I finally wised up and lived up to my
name: Laser! Got two of them
and they decorate the whole
house without a damn string of
lights. Brilliant! But they will get
packed up with the lonely exception of a psychedelic Grayrider
show sometime in 2017. The tree
will come down, the ornaments
put away. I will have to get to
work on all those books people
gave me to read.
After New Years it will be
months before a really good
party is had. So we will go into
hibernation for the winter here
at the beach. Eventually snow
will come. I will break out shovels that I have had since before
Sandy. The mermaid will remind me that this is how men
over 60 die every year. I will be
so happy to be reminded of my
mortality and shovel even harder. Asleep on the couch after my
first phase of shoveling, my mermaid will secretly pay the army

of boys living next door to finish

the job, and then claim that they
are just really nice people. And
I will not be able to protest, because in fact, they are!
Eventually I will look in my
closet and notice several new
pieces of clothing that I didnt realize were in my closet. These are
the gifts that I considered ugly
and useless, but now stuck in the
house for months, suddenly realize that are actually really nice. The
mermaid will have been wearing
new clothes for several straight
weeks at this point, claiming that
they were gifts too, not realizing
that I read the credit card bills and
only fake that I dont.
It is about this time that I realize what a truly blessed season this time of year is. The
family gathers, we watch Its
a Wonderful Life, I cry during
the show and the commercials.
I see friends and people I havent seen all year, we hug and
it is heartfelt. It is a time of year
that people really put thought
and effort into spreading cheer,
that the city and our town really
light up, not just with presents
and lights but with real authentic love for each other. And it is a
time when you realize that those
gifts were especially thoughtful and kind, and in some case
necessary. Like the replacement
coat for the one you have been
wearing since Sandy, but really
love, but know in your heart it is
time to say good-bye to.
It is truly a time to love those
close to us, and to remember
those who have left us, and
smile, knowing that they still
love us, and we love them. It
is a time to reflect on all these
things, and to know, that we are
truly blessed.

Kami Joins The RT

Kami-Leigh Agard, a longtime resident of the Rockaways, will be joining the
Rockaway Times as a reporter. Her formative educational years were spent in Trinidad and Manchester, UK.
She then came to Rockaway
Beach where she attended
Beach Channel High School.
She went on to receive her
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Latino, Latin
American and Caribbean Studies and Masters of
Public Administration from
Northeastern University in
Boston, MA. Upon graduation, she worked at her alma
mater as a media relations
officer, then crossed the
pond to work as a reporter
for London's, UKs newspaper, The Voice, and features
writer for the UK magazine,
Woman-to-Woman.
Kami
later returned to NYC to
work as a promo producer at
Fox News Channel. She then
switched her creative gears,

and for the last ten years has

worked as a technical designer in NYCs fashion district. Currently, she writes
the column, Our Artistic
Child for The Rockaway
Times. Now she joins RT as
a reporter.
One more fun fact! After
Kamis first year of university, she interned at The
Wave, under the editorship
of Kevin Boyle!

The Idea Guys

Idea Potpourri

By Rick Horan

Some ideas Ive heard

around that just might work!
*They should have Morgan
Freeman speak every word in
the English language so we can
continue to make documentaries once he dies.
*Two types of car horns for
your car, a happy, friendly
horn or a mean angry horn.
*A "none of the above" option in elections. If that option
wins, the election is a do-over
with all new candidates.
*Food items should have QR
codes that instruct the microwave exactly what to do, like
high for two minutes, let stand
one minute then medium for
another two minutes.
*A user manual for our
ex-girlfriend or boyfriend that
is to be given to their new boyfriend or girlfriend.
*A device that lets you erase
part of your memory so you

can experience your favorite

books or movies for the first
time again.
*Instead of 140 characters,
Tweets should be limited to
your IQ number.
*A reverse eBay: Buyers post
something they are interested
in buying and vendors compete to offer the lowest bid.
*Border Collies to herd the
inebriated. Instead of just
hoping your friends will follow

That Was The Year That Was:

2016 Recap

By Dan Guarino

2016

Where did the year go? Well

heres a recap of 2016 stories
from the Rockaway Times this
year.
RTs first issue of the year
arrived on January 7, announcing that Beach Channel
Drive between Beach 108th
and 112th Streets, closed on
New Years Eve, would remain
so as PSEG fixed major roadway buckling.
Bickering at a Community
Board meeting over rules, and
a fire which destroyed bungalows on Beach 108th Street,
were reported in the January
14 issue. The incidents were
apparently unrelated.
The 15-story, 126 unit
Metroplex building at Beach
25th Street, started construction in 2008 , went bankrupt
in 2010, and the unfinished
building finally went up for
auction in 2016, RTs January
21 issue said.
For Rockaway swingers, the
January 28 issue reported the
opening of the virtual reality equipped Rockaway Golf
Club, and plans for a La Quinta hotel at Beach 44th Street.
Boardwalk
construction
updates, like in RTs February 4 issue, became a regular
feature, and CruiseOne travel
agency owner Aggie Batista
was spotlighted in the RTs
Women of Rockaway series.
Unwelcome
high
tides
and drainage backups that
brought major flooding, and
unpleasant Sandy flashbacks,
to the Rockaways and Broad
Channel were reported in
mid-February.
Boardwalk Surprise! Beach
73rd to 86th Now Open announced RTs February 18 issue. It also reported the passing of 95 year old Rockaway
strongman Mike The Mighty
Atom Jr. Greenstein.
On February 25 RT reported
NYCHAs Ocean Bay Apartments, having previously received $200 million for renovations, was requesting an

additional $175 millionfor

renovations.
RTs March 3 edition featured the Carolina Queens
III commercial fishing boat
which ran aground the week
before. At the 100th Precinct
Captain Matthew Hanrahan
suffered a fatal heart attack,
and Officer Vincent Harrison
was killed in a hit-and-run incident.
March 10ths issue reported Mayor de Blasios plan for
a permanent, city-wide ferry service, the Army Corps
of Engineers plans for jetties
and sea gates by 2018, and
the proud marching of Rockaways own St. Patricks Day parade. The next week 7 year old
Tyler Williams, a 3rd-grader
at St. Rose of Lima, received
a personal reply to a letter he
wrote to President Obama,
and Hornblower Inc. became
the Citys new ferry operator.
Complaints poured in, RT
noted on March 24, when the
Department of Education proposed moving suspended students from MS 53 over to the
Beach Channel HS campus.
A March 31 story noted Memorial Day weekend as the
target date for re-opening of
major Boardwalk sections,
and also marked the passing
of Elaine Freeburg of Mrs.
Elaines School of Dance.
RTs April 7 issue pointed
to a resurgence of Rockaway
Beach Boulevard in the Beach
90s, with post-Sandy photos
set against pics of the newly
opened businesses and renovated buildings.
Broad Channels Bayview
restaurant came back rebuilt
and better than ever, according to the RT April 14 issue.
Rockaway Times Assistant Editor/writer Katie McFadden
took home honors from the
New York Press Association,
giving the paper its second
win in two years.
Sold! read the April 21
RT headline announcing that
Long Island developer Dorgon
Pergament bought the previ-

ously mentioned Metroplex

condo complex.
It would
soon become the Ocean Blue
luxury apartments.
The April 28 edition reported hundreds of entries for the
first RT photo contest, also
that popular PS 114 teacher
and community member David Greenspan was mourned
by hundreds at West End
Temple.
The May 5 issue noted that
according to the City, large
portions of the Boardwalk
would not be done by Memorial Day after all. Maybe July.
On the other hand Beach
Channel Drive would re-open
by Memorial Day, May 12's issue reported, with new benches, green areas and walkways
already built along the bay as
an added part of the project.
May 27's Rockaway Times
featured the seasons first
DFD- a photogenic grey seal
who was seen lounging on
Beach 110th Street and stopping by to check out several
beaches as he headed down
the peninsula.
As reported in June 2's edition, a Klaus Biesenbach curated/Katharina Grosse executed installation turned
the old Aquatics building at
Fort Tilden into a full scale
3D painting, while hundreds
packed the Irish Festival when
it hit town.
Walter The Dog had that
his day as owner Michael Rudins photo won the RT photo
contests $500 top prize. The
pic of the pooch wearing a
blue cape and standing steadfast on the snow-covered
beach graced the June 2 front
page.
RTs issue for June 16 reported on the 10th anniversary of
the music, skating, surfing, local shopping and fun festival
Rockstock & Barrels. Citing
the expense of maintaining
the firehouse on Beach 116th
Street, the June 23 RT relayed,
the FDNY was looking into
relocating to the old HSBC
bank location on Beach Chan-

nel Drive. Plus the Rockaway

Times turned two!
As reported by RT on June
30, the full Boardwalk got ready
welcome to re-opened on July
4th weekend, and the Rock got
ready to once again welcome the
Wounded Warriors on July 7.
The Rockaway Times cover photo for July 7 said it all.
A smaller inset photo showed
the 2012 hurricane devastated
Boardwalk, its boards ripped
away by the storm, leaving
nothing but concrete supports behind. The larger shot,
by Katie McFadden, featured a
wet but wide and new Boardwalk with one end of a fresh
rainbow squarely landing on
it. The headline? Boardwalk
At The End of the Rainbow.
Rockaway Times June 14 issue The interactive Pokmon
Go game invaded the peninsula with gamers out in force
all over Rockaway. Runner
Kerri Gallagher fell just short
in her quest for the Olympics but had an amazing run
with being unable to train for
weeks while recovering from
appendicitis.
RTs July 21 edition reported
that in memoriam the corner
of Beach Channel Drive and
Seaside Avenue would be renamed Midshipman Justin
Zemser Way.
Giving took on a new meaning, as Fr. James Cunningham
(Father Jim) of St. Francis
de Sales received the lifesaving gift of a donated kidney
from parishioner Pat Nash.
The story was featured in the
July 28 issue.
RT reported on August 4 that
the National Park Service was
renovating the Riis Park Bathhouse with an eye toward was
future use as a concession, entertainment and beach center.
The Rockaways Times August 11 issue broke the story
of plans to raze the old Beach
Club on Beach 116th Street,
build four new 9 story condo
buildings with parking, retail

Lights:
A BRIGHT IDEA FOR ROCKAWAY?

By Katie McFadden

The holidays may have

come and gone but its never
too early to start thinking for
the year ahead, especially
when it comes to something
that requires planning. For
the past four seasons, Long
Beach has been making their
boardwalk bright with festive
and nautical lights for the
holiday season. With Rockaways boardwalk expected

to be fully complete by Memorial Day 2017, decorating

our own boardwalk next year
may seem like a bright idea.
Just as Rockaway was,
Long Beach was devastated
by Hurricane Sandy. As the
town recovered, the City of
Long Beach teamed up with
Creative Advertising Concepts to come up with ways
to boost tourism and bring
the neighborhood back to
life, especially in the off-season. After the hurricane
when the boardwalk was rebuilt in 2013, it was our job
to let people know that Long
Beach is back and open for
business and we wanted to
do something to help them
out in the winter, Wendy
Parr, owner of CAC said. We
created Boardwalk Lights
to get more people to come

visit the attraction and stay

to dine and shop in Long
Beach.
For the past four years, a
display of seasonal symbols
like snowflakes, trees and
menorahs to nautical figures
like sharks, turtles and seagulls, have lined 3/4 of a mile
of the boardwalk from Long
Beach Boulevard to Magnolia Boulevard. The display
was first sponsored by local
businesses and organizations like banks, the Allegria
hotel, National Grid, South
Nassau Communities Hospital and more. With the lights
already purchased, the project is now self-sustaining.
The display was such a hit
that the City of Long Beach
decided to expand it to the
streets. More funding was
acquired to add displays to

Park Avenue, the West End,

the East End and the Canal
Bridges in Long Beach. The
boardwalk is the heart of the
city. People go for a jog or
walk on the boardwalk and
so many people see it. It was
a great thing for the city and
it made us feel good to be a
part of it, Parr said, adding
that she believes the Boardwalk Lights, along with other initiatives have helped to
bring Long Beach back. At-

Day, youll get half-priced drinks

all day. Bungalow Bar will have

the chilly ocean at various locations around noon, but the big
ones are at Beach 145th and 127th.
If you want to celebrate outdoors
without getting wet, from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. take a hike around Fort

BOARDWALK LIGHTS

tendance in the city has been

higher than its ever been, she
said.
This year the Long Beach
display was lit on December
2 and will remain lit every
night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until mid-January if youd like to
check out the display yourself.
However, is this something
we could have closer to
home? The NYC Parks Department, which is in charge
of the Rockaway boardwalk,
says it's possible, and the new
light poles were even made for
something like this. Parks
would absolutely be open to
working with the community
on a holiday light installation
next year. In fact, we made sure
to install light poles along the
boardwalk that have electrical
outlets on the top, so they are
capable of hosting a display
like this. Since the light poles
themselves are maintained by
DOT we would also need to
coordinate with them, Parks
spokesperson Meghan La-

lor said. However, the project

would require funding. The
majority of decorative light installations in Parks are funded
by partners, so we would seek
outside support for a project
like this, Lalor said. Robby
Schwach of Councilman Eric
Ulrichs office also said the
project is possible. Some suggested it be funded through
Participatory Budgeting, but
something like this wouldnt
qualify as PB is only for capital budget items. However
something could be done if
local businesses, civic associations or other organizations were to come together
for sponsorship. Wed be
happy to start the conversation for next year, Lalor
said.

Diet Recommendations
The recent revelation that
the sugar industry tried to manipulate science in the 1960s
has led to a refocusing on the
quality of scientific evidence
in the field of nutrition as well
as a re-look at ways to prevent
diet-related chronic disease. In
the early 1970s the US government and major professional
nutrition organizations recommended that people eat a lowfat/high-carbohydrate
diet.
Some argue that this launched
the largest public health experiment in history. In the
40 some-odd years that have
passed since those recommendations were made, the prevalence of obesity and diabetes
increased several-fold, despite
the fact that the average American diet contains 25 percent
less fat. The 2015 USDA Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, recognizing that the consumption
of processed carbohydrates
(white bread, white rice, chips,
crackers, cookies, and sugary
drinks) was driving the increase
in both obesity and diabetes,
basically eliminated the upper
limit on dietary fat intake. But
the low-fat diet remains locked
in the public consciousness
and therefore significant harms
still persist. This massive public
health failure of the 1960s and
70s remains to be comprehensibly examined.
In the mid-20th century US
citizens consumed a higher-fat
diet with more than 40 percent of calories coming from
fat. At that time it was thought
that processed carbohydrates
caused weight gain. Back then
virtually all milk was whole
rather than low-fat and fats
were used liberally in cooking,
sauces, and salad dressings.
But in a few decades this all
changed as small studies suggested the benefits of a low-fat
diet. Fat is a high-density en-

ergy food with 9 calories per

gram as opposed to 4 calories
per gram for carbohydrates and
proteins. In addition, high fat
foods are tasty and cause less
satiety, or the feeling of being
full, as compared to carbohydrates. So the experts said that
it was difficult, if not virtually impossible, to overeat on a
high-carbohydrate diet. So by
the late 20th century the government switched to recommending a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.
Recent research suggests that
the focus on reducing dietary
fat has led to an increase in
chronic disease. Research also
shows that low-carbohydrate
and low-glycemic (sugar) diets
lead to a reduction in insulin
levels and long-term weightloss maintenance. Some experts argue, however, that the
low-fat dietary recommendations were meant to increase
consumption of vegetables,
fruits, and whole grains, not increase carbohydrate and sugar
consumption. They maintain
that it was the sugar industry
that hijacked the low-fat diet
and twisted it into something
that was unintended. We may
never know the whole truth.
So current dietary recommendations focus on low-carbohydrate, low-sugar diets with
increases in the use of fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, and
nuts and seeds. Recommendations on protein consumption
remain the same while focus
on fat intake has lessened significantly. All this naturally
includes the assumption that
one makes reasonable dietary
choices. Just because the focus
on fat intake is reduced doesnt
mean a daily ice cream sundae
is now ok.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As 2017 rapidly approaches

many columns you will peruse will
be filled with predictions for the
coming New Year. Unfortunately,
just like Chuck Schumer's weekly
Sunday press conferences, nobody
ever follows up to see if anything
ever came of them. I, on the other
hand, am happy to advise you that
during December of last year (2015)
I also jotted down several predictions for the coming 2016 new year,
sealed them in an envelope and set
them aside. I recently came across
that envelope brimming with my
prognostications and opened it

to see just how finely polished my

prophetic prowess was at the time.
I thought I might share them with
all of you as we head into yet another New Year.
Let's start with the easy ones...the
ones I got right,....zip, nada, zero!
See - I told you that would be easy.
Now let's move on to the ones I
got wrong, which, as you may have
already figured out, was all of them!.
#1 - I predicted the Boston Red
Sox would be the 2016 World Series
Champs. I'm not going to beat myself up too much one this one as...
come on now! Did anyone actually
pick the Cubbies?
#2 - Back then my crystal ball
whispered to me that Bill de Blasio would smarten up and fly right
during 2016 and actually start to act
like a real Mayor and manage our
city. Unfortunately the only flying
he is doing these days is to apparently stay ahead of several grand
juries looking into to his questionable campaign contributions.
#3 - My spidey sense indicated
that our very own word meister and
editor in chief here at the Rockaway
Times, Kevin Boyle, might have
a good shot at grabbing the 2016

Nobel Prize for Literature for his

highly acclaimed weekly "Boyleing
Points" column. Alas, Bob Dylan
somehow managed to sneak past
Kevin waving and singing, "It ain't
you babe!"
#4 - I was absolutely convinced
that Dan Guarino, our resident
Broad Channel bon vivant, would
be the subject of his own reality
cable show due to his myriad and
prodigious talents as an author,
artist, actor, singer, reporter, etc.
Wrong again. Instead, it appears
that our very own City Councilman, Eric Ulrich, will be vying for
viewership alongside the Deadliest Catch with his own, politically
oriented, reality series.
#5 - I was certain that 2016 would
see Broad Channel residents Sophia and Lenny DiVirgilio back in
their Sandy destroyed home on
West 12th Road. Nope! If you stroll
down West 12th Road today and
view their property, it looks not unlike the end of the 1982 movie Poltergeist after the family's home has
been sucked out of existence leaving behind only a hole in a dirt lot.
#6 - A quick shuffle and deal of
my Tarot cards indicated that the

ongoing Broad Channel Flood

Mitigation project on West 11th
and 12th Roads just might be completed before the 2017 New Year
rang in. Again...not to be! It was
recently revealed that the project
will be halted in March of 2017 to
allow full access to the involved
streets by Build it Back to elevate
and/or/rebuild some 35 properties
before turning the streets back over
to DDC to complete the new bulkhead, street reconstruction, raising
and finishing!
I have to admit that, in light of my
above gaffes, I feel somewhat like
Ken Olson, President, Chairman
and founder of Digital Equipment
Corp. who back in 1977 offered
this prediction, "There will be no
reason anyone would want a computer in their home." Nevertheless,
as we are all at the ending point of
this year I thought I should thank
everyone who reads these missives
and all your comments which inevitably make me smile. You are

A BLESSING
May you awaken to the mystery of being here and enter
the quiet immensity of your
own presence.
May you have joy and peace
in the temple of your senses.
May you receive great encouragement when new frontiers beckon.
May you respond to the call
of your gift and find the courage to follow its path.
May you take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that
seek no attention.
May you be consoled in the

NYLAG (New York Legal Assistance Group) in so many ways
and Pnina was kind, informative and efficient . Mr. Goldfeder even answered my first
email personally on a Sunday.
I actually found out last week
that an agency called The Center
for NYC Neighborhoods was
responsible for connecting me
to Mr. William Friedman from
NYLAG. I wanted to thank both

agencies for taking on my case.

Mr. Friedman is an attorney who
is a supervisor at New York Legal
Assistance Group. The NYLAG
team were dedicated and worked
tirelessly for two years. It was an
incredibly complicated process
and I don't know if anyone else
would have had the tenacity to
accomplish what needed to be
done. In addition, Lila Tedesco
who is my architect, was wonderful as well. I had assistance
from Janet Brady from Catholic
Charities and a lovely letter from
Eric Ulrich 's office that added to
this collaboration.
In retrospect if anyone from the
administration of Build it Back
attempted to really help me the
construction would have been
completed at the time of the contract end date that was two years
ago. All of these amazing organizations made things happen.
I wanted to wish Mr. Goldfeder and Pnina good luck with
their future endeavors. These are
wonderful people who served
the public. I hope that one day
Mr. Goldfeder will pursue representing us again.

These are rates for non-tobacco users in our Preferred Best category and do not include any riders. If you continue
the policy beyond the initial level-premium period (in this case, 10 years), premiums will then increase annually
through age 95 but will never be more than the maximum stated in the contract. In Montana, rates for females are
the same as those for males. Paying more often than annually will result in higher premiums. Availability and
actual rates will vary based on how you satisfy our underwriting and eligibility criteria. The issuing company may
have the right to contest the policy for misrepresentation or to apply a suicide clause. Rates as of August 2014.

Todays view is a portion of

a Jamaica Bay map featuring
Broad Channel drawn in what
I think was about 1895, give or
take a few years. Records say it
was drawn in 1901 as a transportation map. My opinion of it being earlier is due to the fact that
Beach Channel Station (lower
right) on the bay LIRR trestle
was opened in 1888, and the
proposed Jamaica Bay Trolley
landfill was started in 1898 then
completed in 1901. The fill is
not shown on this map. The Bay
Trolley was never realized, and
the fill became the base for the
Jamaica Bay Road in later years.
I have added a due or true north
marker as well as numbered
places such as follows:
1. Barnes Creek which went under the Broad Channel Station

to the west and almost reached

Shad Creek.
2. Shad Creek Flats.
3. The Raunt Station.
4. Bacon Creek.
5. Broad Channel RR Swing
Bridge.
6. Raunt Channel.
7. Big Egg Marsh.
8. Trolley Fill Area.

Life With Our

Artistic Child
By Kami-Leigh Agard

3 New Years Resolutions

By Kami-Leigh Agard
I hungrily await the dawn
of 2017, a year of new beginnings professionally, mentally
and spiritually. Also, our artistic daughter is going to be
nine this year! As I warm up to
sprint full speed ahead, I realize that a change of mindset is
intrinsically needed to fulfill
all my goals. Not just with new
vocational opportunities and
health aspirations, but also as
a mother struggling to keep
sane in the capricious world of
autism.
Here are three resolutions
that I vow to keep in the
next 365 days:

1- I will not be afraid of or

hide your autism. One day this
past summer, I brought you to
the beach. As you pranced up
and down the shoreline, with
me chasing you like the track
super star Usain Bolt, I overheard a friend explaining to
another that you are autistic. I
looked back in anger. Why did
he have to say that? He looked
at me in bewilderment and

AJI RAB

said, Whats the big deal? As I

reflect on this, I can now agree.
Yes, what is the big deal? Why
was I hiding your autism from
other people? Admittedly, I was
afraid of other people judging,
ostracizing and belittling you.
This is why writing this column
in the beginning was so challenging and frightening. I was
afraid of what people would
think and say. Now my attitude
has evolved to feeling proud.
Yes, my daughter is autistic,
which equates you to being
special, smart and beautiful.
No, you are not average or boringly normal. Your spirit alone
is breathtaking.
2- I will not allow other peoples attitude or comments ruin
our fun times together. Truth be
told, I am usually reluctant to
take you to a social event. You
love to run, jump, (especially
on furniture) and gleefully flap
your hands like a bird. However, I have learned that you,
my love, are not the problem,
its the intolerant earthlings
we are unfortunately exposed
to. There are some who are enchanted by your ballerina-like

movements, and otherswell,

who are just plain stuck on stupid. For example, when I took
you to your first birthday party, you frolicked around and
unfortunately power-washed
our hosts floor with your pee.
After only half an hour there,
we made a speedy exit. I texted my friend to thank her for
inviting us and to apologize
for the power wash. She simply responded, Your daughter was like a beautiful fairy.
On another occasion, we
went to a close friends birthday party. Like any child, you
were quiet at first, but then
got antsy and started bouncing around. I turned all colors,
when my friend growled,
Control your child! Ha! We
left. I was seething. When we
got home, I told grand mum
the sequence of events. All
she said was, Consider the
source. Good advice. So yes,
there are some folks, who are
sensitive and open enough to
embrace the beauty beholding them, and others who are
just too obtuse to even try.
3- I am going to cease ask-

Page 29
ing the question why you are
autistic, and instead embrace
the notion, Why not? After
countless wasted years looking
into what caused your autism,
I am going to focus on just allowing you to just be. Forgive
me for placing you on special
gluten-free diets, investing in
a million miracle nutritional
supplements, sensory and educational props, taking you to
every kind of doctor suggested. I promise, no more. I want
to see you jump, flap, prance,
dance, giggle and fly like the
beguiling fairy you are!
Happy New Year Rockaway
Times readers!

I talk about autism to open

doors into the reality of our
lives as caregivers, build understanding, tolerance and growth
of our artistic children.
Please do share your thoughts
and stories by emailing ourartisticchild@outlook.com. Also,
gearing up for the next Rockaway Beach Artistic Families

T he healthy
child

tions so that you can create the

safest possible sleep environment
for your baby. Hopefully this will
help you to sleep a little easier too!
First, until their first birthday,
always put your baby to sleep on
his or her back. Some parents are
concerned that their baby will aspirate in this position but healthy
newborns have a developed
gag reflex and are not at risk of
choking. Other times, parents
feel that their baby sleeps better on the side. Unfortunately,
side sleepers are at risk of rolling
to their bellies which increases
the risk of SIDS. Once a baby
reaches about 4 or 5 months
of age, he will usually have the
skills to turn over both ways. If,

at this point, your infant flips

over while sleeping, let him be.
Second, it is important to
use a firm sleep surface with a
tight fitted sheet. Nothing else
should be placed in the crib
with your baby. This includes
soft objects or blankets. If you
are unsure of your childs crib or
mattress. I recommend you visit the Consumer Product Safety
Commission website.
Third, room sharing is recommended while bed sharing is
not. This is perhaps the most important new recommendation.
Room sharing during the first 6
to 12 months decreases the risk of
SIDS dramatically. Ideally, your
babys bassinet or crib should remain close to your bed. As well
as being safer, this will make the
middle of the night feeds a little easier and increase bonding.
You can share your bed with your
child for soothing and feeding but
you should always return your
baby to his own bassinet or crib
when it is time to sleep.
Parents of young infants often
ask about using a pacifier, swaddling, or a mobile to help their
young ones sleep. Pacifiers are

actually recommended for sleep

since they reduce the risk of SIDS.
We recommend waiting until
breastfeeding is well established
(approximately 2-3 weeks) before
introducing a pacifier. Swaddling
does not impact the risk of SIDS
but it definitely helps some infants to sleep. We feel comfortable allowing a swaddle with sleep
until a baby is capable of turning
over both ways or unless you are
not a particularly good swaddler!
As for a mobile, we recommend
that you do not put this directly
over the crib. If it comes loose or
your child is able to grab it, it can
be dangerous.
All of the recommendations
we have discussed should also
be employed when your child
naps. I hope this quick review
has been helpful and please feel
free to reach out with any questions about creating a healthy
sleep environment for your
child. As for sleep training, this
is a topic for another day. I promise I will come back to this in a few
weeks.
For more information please feel
free to email me at drsarnoff@premierpediatricsny.com.

The upcoming 12th Annual

Richie Allen Surf Classic was
covered in the September 15
paper, while the return of the
colorful, bigger, bolder Poseidon Parade was reported
the next week.
Parking lot lines were
drawn as later September
complaints rose over aggressive car towing at the Stop &
Shop lot in Rockaway Park.
Early October saw Oktoberfest celebrations around
the peninsula, and reports
that Old Arverne (by the bay)
might be the next up and
coming Rockaway nabe.
Daltons
Seaside
Grill
closed its doors for good on
October 16, as plans proceed
for a Tubridy-family owned hotel, which will take up the block
and include dining and retail
space.
Playland restaurant also
closed later, citing the Playland
Motel owners plans to revamp
the whole block. Uproar ensued when it was reported the
hip motel was housing NYC
homeless families. Just temporary, they said.

Halloween came, four years

after Sandy, with new real-life
scary stories about homeowners left out in the cold as they
struggled with the nightmare of
failed Build it Back processes.
Its Almost Over! declared
the November 3 cover about the
contentious election season.
The next issue noted that Stacey
Pheffer-Amato was our new Assemblyperson, and Congressman Gregory Meeks and State
Senator Joe Addabbo held onto
their seats.
In
mid-November
the
National Park Service announced it was seeking proposals to transform the old
Riis Bathhouse into a concession, entertainment and leisure attraction, ala Riis Park
Beach Bazaar.
The last week of the month
saw demolition begin on the
old Key Food supermarket at
Beach 105th Street to make
way for a new medical complex.
Taste of Rockaway got even
bigger in the first week of December, with local retailers,
musicians and artists joining

in and other restaurants setting up in local stores.

The Little North Pole once
again lit up the season and
raised thousands for juvenile
diabetes research.
RTs December 8 issue reported Councilman Eric Ulrich will be a doing reality TV
show about his current elected joband possible future
political aspirations.
Vets and residents stopped
to remember Pearl Harbors
75th anniversary at Memorial Circle, seniors posted their
higher education applications at Channel Views 6th
annual College March, and
St. Camillus Special Olympics program celebrated 20
years.
Finally, late December
snow could not stop the Santa Shuffle 5K's runners, nor
dozens of volunteer Santas
and helpers from bringing
toys and good cheer to children all over the peninsula.
And now with the New Year
countdown already sounding,
we wish you good luck and
good reading in 2017!

Safe Sleep and Your Baby

By: Dr. Jon Sarnoff, Pediatrician,
Premier Pediatrics NYC, Brooklyn
and Rockaways

Although there are many different strategies on how to sleep train

a baby, luckily, the advice on how
to create a safe sleep environment
for an infants is a bit more cut and
dry. Since the Back to Sleep
campaign of 1994, the number of
babies put to sleep on their back
has risen dramatically. This has
ultimately led to a decrease in the
rate of SIDS in the United States.
In 2011 and again in 2016, the
Back to Sleep recommendations have been expanded. I
would like highlight the key
points of the new recommenda-

space and affordable senior spaces and transform the
blighted beach facing area.
As reported the next week,
local reaction was very positive.
RTs August 25 edition reported the details on the
just released first draft of the
Army Corps of Engineers
Reformulation Study, which
laid out a large scale series of
options to protect communities along both the ocean and
the bay from future storms
and sea level rising.
Hurricane Gaston? The noshow storm reported in the
September 1 edition had all
but dried up by the next week.
Fifteenth anniversary 9/11
observances were noted in
September 8s paper, as well
as a sizzling extension to the
summer season and, yes, police ticketing surfers for hitting the waves after the Mayor closed all beaches due to
concerns over the eventual
no-show Hurricane Hermine.

PROMISES TO KEEP:
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS
FROM THE WRITERS CLUB OF PS/MS 114
A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU FROM MRS. JOAN DIEHL- I
dedicate this poem with love to my writing students and friends
at PS/MS 114, who have made so many of my dreams come true.
Thanks for years of memories. Lets make more magic in 2017!
The New Year has promises to keep
She listens to the silent prayers
That we have buried deepThe New Year has a fickle hand
That you, dear friends, can guideGrasp it firmly with good faith,
And, keep her on your side
Point it steady to the places
Where you want to goAnd, magically the seeds will blossom
That you tried to sow
The New Year rides on winds of change
And Good things, Bad things rearrange
What was Then is gone for good
Though, some things wed keep If we could
But we cant stop the windy stream
So embrace the New Year, dear friends, and Dream!
LILY ZUSS
I will subtract something from myself
Pluck it out of my personality and tuck it away
It is the raging anger I feel that is sparked by frustrating math
The anger I feel rages like a beast in a cage
Filled with oh so much rage
The anger swells, then erupts
Then barbed words form in my mouth
They come crashing out all at once
Leaping like rabbits off my tongue
I cant stop; the damage is done
Then remorse takes its course
The tears continue to roll
Sadness continues to take its toll
The tears race at such a pace
Then the make up rolls around
The sorrow in me has been drowned
My mothers arms come around
The beast filled with rage is back in its cage
Deep underground, not making a sound
Now my anger is deep underground
Only to come from its den
When it is needed again
When the frustrating math makes its path toward me
TRISTAN ZAM
I was walking into my room and there I saw it. The bed
was a monster, eating my homework. It was the best piece
of writing I had ever written. It would blow Mrs. Diehls
mind like a shaken-up soda pop! And now, I thought it
would be gone forever inside the stomach of my bed. The

bed looked like a mattress wearing blue pants, with a giant

head and long cushiony arms. It was scary but, without hesitating, I knew what I had to do. Ive got to get that paper
back, I said, as I jumped head first into my bed, and got
swallowed by the monster. It felt like riding a roller coaster
inside of somebodys stomach! Down, down, down I went.
And then I spotted it. My paper was sticking out of some
green gooey stuff that looked like guacamole. I grabbed it,
but not before I fell into a black hole! Was it a dream?! It
must have been. I woke up and went to school. At the end
of the day, I turned in my paper to Mrs. Diehl, and she said
it needed a little work. My face fell to the floor and flopped
over like Jello. So, my New Years resolution is to become a
better writer.
JULIA COURTNEY
I have an enemy, one that stabs my heart with a knife. She
pulls it out and tears it apart as if it were as thin as paper. I
know it is sad to say, but I want to forgive her. I dont want her
to stand in front of me and step on me like a bug. My enemy is
me. I want to become more openhearted and forgive myself
for my mistakes. Im stopping myself by not letting my heart
reach out to others. I want to help other people, not just myself. I want to accept people for who they are. But most of all,
my biggest mistakethe size of a giantis not to pretend Im
someone Im not. You see it is hard being a perfectionist. My
New Years resolution is to be forgiving to myself.
DELANEY LAFFLER
Traveling to South Korea, Dublin, and Texas, my father always brings me presents. I havent done anything for him, but
he knows just what to get for me. My dad brings me where I
need to be, helps me with homework, and makes me feel great.
My dad needs something more than a store-bought gift; he
needs something important, something from the heart. A great
idea sprouts in my head, a New Years resolution. I will spend
more time with him! I could help him with yard work, housework and other chores. Or, we could just hang out. His constant
hard work will be rewarded this New Year with love from me.
My dad deserves the best I can give him. I know not much is
needed to capture his heartall the heart wants is love!
HAILEY IMPASTATO
Where there is great love,
There is a great miracle to be
My Great-Grandma, you see,
Is in a nursing home, alone
Where she doesnt want to be
Just let her come home, for one day
That is my New Years wish
For me to see her, and for her to see me
Her smile lights me up like a light bulb, so bright
I want to hug her so tight
Until she bursts into tears of joy, happiness and delight
I dont know when she will come home or if she ever can
But my holiday wish is for her to come home once again
