Dublin Fire Brigade Drill Book 10.5m/9m Ladder Drill Introduction A ladder should as far as circumstances permit, be pitched to the right hand side of a window or other opening with, where possible, three rounds above the sill When a ladder is pitched and extended, the pawls must be properly engaged with the rounds in line and the heel correctly footed before any attempt is made to climb or descend. When stepping off a ladder, (see No. 5 “Section 12 Entension Ladder Drills") personnel should ascend to the level of, or to the round above, the parapet or window sill before stepping off with the outside foot, i.e., with the left foot if to the left, or with the right foot, if to the right. When getting in/out of a window, (see No. 6 “Section 12 Entension Ladder Drills") ‘or to/from a parapet and stepping up onto a ladder pitched to the right, a| convenient round should be grasped from the rear underside with the left palm uppermost. Make Down ‘Slips the beam gantry using the beam gantry pole to pull the ladder housing along the gantry (where fitted). Releases the catch holding the ladder in place on the gantry. Takes hold of the heel of the ladder and slips the ladder from the gantry assisted by No. 2 and No. 4. Holds the beam gantry down by means of handle. Takes up position to n/s of ladder and prepares to assist No. 3 and No. 4 to lift the ladder clear of the gantry Dublin Fire Brigade Drill Book Number 4 | Takes up position to o/s of the ladder and prepares to assist No. 3 land No. 2 to lift the ladder clear of the gantry. ‘Number 4 |Gives the command “Prepare to lift” and “Lift”, the ladder is lifted clear of gantry and carried head first into position. Commands “Left wheel or Right wheel” as appropriate. Number 3 |Places the heel of the ladder on the ground (one-third working height from building). Making certain that the correct side of the ladder is uppermost. Number 3 |Places his two feet on the bottom round and takes hold of a higher round and pulls. Number 4 | Gives the command “Prepare to under-run" and then “Under- run’. Numbers |Raise the ladder to the vertical position by under-running with both 244 Jarms fully extended and working closely together looking forward at all times. Stabilise the ladder in the vertical position with hands and feet in proper positions. (See Extension Ladder Drills / Footing and Bracing Section (b) (ii)). ‘On reaching the vertical No 3 steps off the bottom round with right foot and stabilises the ladder until No. 2 and No. 4 are comfortable with their positions. Gives the commands “Prepare to extend” and “Extend”. Brace the ladder while it is being extended. Releases the strap, pulls on rope to extend ladder, hand over hand juntil No. 4 gives the command “Well” (indicating that the desired height has been reached) then trips the pawls to the lock position. Number 4 |Gives the command "Head in" when No. 3 is back in position on the heel facing the building. ‘The head of the ladder is lowered into the building in a controlled manner. Number 3 | Butts the ladder. Dublin Fire Brigade Drill Book Make Up Gives the command "Prepare to Heel In’. Take hold of the ladder by means of one hand on a string, in a suitable position, and one hand on a suitable round. When No. 4 gives the command “Heel in" they lift the heel of the ladder in towards the building until the ladder is nearly vertical. Takes up position on the building side of the ladder. Gives the command "Prepare to Head Out" and when the crew is prepared No. 4 gives the command "Head Out”. Lift the head of the ladder out from the building a couple of centimetres still not reaching the vertical. They then brace the, ladder, using the same method used in the Make Down, while it is being lowered. Gives the command “Prepare to Extend to lower” and “Lower”. Pulls on the rope to extend to lower and allows the ladder to lower under control, hand under hand, until the ladder is housed. No. 3, after replacing the strap, takes up position to under-run, preparing to ‘stand on the lowermost round and hold an appropriate round. Number 4 | Gives the commands “Prepare to under run” and “Under run” Numbers |Lower the ladder by under-running with both arms fully extended, 2&4 —|working closely together and looking forward at all times. Number 4 |Gives the command to No. 3 to "Prepare to lift” and then “Lift” when the ladder reaches the nearly horizontal position with No's 2 & 4 holding the head of the ladder with the heel of the ladder on the ground. Number 3 |Using correct Manual Handling techniques then lifts the heel of the ladder off the ground and the ladder is then placed on the appliance. No. 3 removes the strap holding the ladder to the gantry and lifts the ladder clear, walking backwards pulling the ladder along the gantry. No. 3 continues to pull the ladder back until it reaches the end of the gantry. No’'s 2 & 4 lift the ladder clear of the gantry The ladder is carried into place.
