subsequently used on the project, shall be paid

for at the relevant schedule rates.

This section provides for the trial assembly of

prototype lattice steel tower structures to
verify member detail drawings and fabrication
before mass production and/or erection.
ElectraNet shall advise the successful
Contractor which towers or portions shall be
prototype assembled within 6 weeks of the date
of the Letter of Acceptance.

All parts of each structure type are to be trial

assembled in either the vertical or horizontal
attitude. If the latter method is used then the
structure is to be carefully supported on blocks
to ensure that the structure is not subjected to
undue bending, which may distort the fit of
various members and plates. As far as is
practicable the trial assembly shall form the
complete structure.

8.2 ASSEMBLY

Bolts of the correct length shown on assembly

drawings shall be used and adequately
tightened to ensure that mating surfaces of
adjacent members and plates are in contact
and all movement between adjacent members
is eliminated.

For each nominated design a prototype tower

shall be fabricated and assembled by the
contractor for checking accuracy of member
detail drawings, fabrication processes,
connection details, joint eccentricities, steel
grade, bolt fit etc.
The prototype tower shall be inspected and
approved by ElectraNet before manufacture of
the remaining towers commences. The
contractor shall provide not less than three
working days notice of the readiness of a
tower(s) for inspection at an Australian site
and not less than four weeks notice of the
readiness of a tower(s) for inspection at an
overseas site. No payment for prototype
fabrication will be made until the prototype of
the complete tower has been inspected and
issue of revised drawings have been received.
The contractor may elect to use the tower
erection process as the designated prototype
test. Such towers may include one off
structures or previously built towers, including
ElectraNet tower designs nominated for use in
a particular project. In such cases any
additional cost and delays that arise to provide
revised design details and/or replacement of
members as required by the prototype test
shall be at the Contractors expense.
A prototype tower of the specified tower type
comprising the maximum height structure,
together with all body and leg extension
combinations shall be assembled at the
Contractors Workshop.
ElectraNet may
request or if requested by the Contractor,
permit the prototyping of only that steelwork
to be used on the project to be prototyped.
Tower steelwork prototyped, but not

Version: 1.1

The Contractor shall carry out an inspection of

the assembled structure to ensure that it is in
accordance with the manufacturing drawings
and to determine if modifications are required
to allow good fit. The Contractor shall keep
records of this inspection and these shall be
made available to ElectraNet.
Any errors or inadequacies in the drawings
used to fabricate and assemble the prototype
shall be notified in writing to the tower
designer, and shall include any modifications
made or recommended to members, plates,
bolts or packers. The tower designer shall
approve all such changes prior to commencing
production fabrication.
Drawings provided by the designer shall be
amended and re-issued to the contractor
including approved revisions. Copies shall be
provided in accordance with the specification.
ElectraNet may carry out a complete and
independent inspection or audit the
Contractors inspection. Regardless of any
inspection carried out by ElectraNet the
Contractor is responsible for any misfit or
non-compliance found later.
Tower fabrication shall not commence for the
remainder of any steel components until
ElectraNet has given approval.
The final version of drawings shall be checked
by the contractor and certified as being
correct. Certification of drawings by the
contractor shall be taken as a guarantee that

Quality Assurance checks have been

conducted to ensure that the final versions of
the drawings exactly represent the structures
erected on site.
Members or components may be reused for
repeat prototype tests or supply of production
towers. Bolt holes formed in members or
plates may be reinstated with plug welds
subject to approval of the contractors welding
procedure by ElectraNet. Such members shall
be clearly identified and may only be re-used
in production towers with written approval
from ElectraNet and after re-galvanising.
