For example let's compare it to a SmartTV.

There are many SmartTVs available in the market which have inbuilt browser, and
applications.
Alternatively, you can add a dongle or media device like a chromecast to your TV
and have a smart TV like interface.
Essentially the interface will come over your present TV and use the display, but it
will not change the basic interface of your TV.
The automatic gearboxes can be assumed as SmartTVs. There are many
technologies to attain this like Torque Converter, CVT, DCT, DSG, however, the
outcome a basic user is the same, that you do not need to change gears and there
is no clutch.
The AMT gearboxes are similar to the media device attached to your regular TV to
make it smart. The AMT module is added to a manual transmission car, which
controls the gear changing. For a basic user, there is no difference here, as again
there is no clutch and you do not need to change gears.
However, unlike a SmartTV dongle, AMTs are installed from factory and are not
reversible.

An AMT is an automated manual transmission. Just like a manual transmission, it has a gear shift
and a clutch, but the shifts are completed automatically.
Traditional automatics use a process to change gears that's only loosely similar to a manual
transmission...there's a viscous coupling, a planetary gear set, and a series of hydraulic "tricks"
that facilitate gear changes.
