EXT. FIELD - EARLY MORNING

A LARGE OAK TREE in the early morning sun, moves slightly in


the breeze.

EXT. TOWN - EARLY MORNING

A lone figure, BILLY FARRELL (35), staggers drunkenly across


the SQUARE OF A PROVINCIAL TOWN. He is lost in his own world,
his eyes squinting against the rising sun. He is bleeding
from a cut to his forehead.
We HEAR CHURCH BELLS in the distance.
Billy LOOKS towards 'THE COPPER BEECH' NIGHTCLUB as he passes
on by.

EXT. CANAL BANK - EARLY MORNING


Billy's eyes dart to:
The TERMINUS of the grand canal.
A FEW BOATS tied up.
An EMPTY LIFE BUOY STAND.
Billy continues to shamble along, mumbling to himself.
BILLY
Nothin' ever hard about me. Nothin'
ever....

Billy reaches a BENCH and slumps down onto it, out of frame.

INT. FARRELL HOUSE/BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING


Billy drops to his knees in the room. He looks to the
doorway, sees:

His wife, BREDA FARRELL (33), and his two very upset looking
children, EDEL (9) and JAMES (8), as they turn to leave the
room.
Billy closes his eyes to fight back the tears, and wipes a
trickle of blood from the cut on his forehead. He opens his
eyes and looks up at something above him.
A PAINTING of a bright sunny sky and field of long grass.
The main focus is a LARGE TREE and a GROUP OF MALE PEASANTS
gathered around it who look like something out of the
eighteenth century.

We PULL BACK from the painting to REVEAL


BILLY, STARING up at it.
We CONTINUE TO MOVE over Billy's head and across the
bedspread as we...
DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. FIELD - DAY


A field of long grass.
We SLOWLY TILT UP to reveal the LARGE OAK TREE, moving
slightly in the breeze.
BILLY (O.S.)
Makin' me sick... All this in
me.... Want to see her...
A GROUP OF MALE PEASANTS sit resting in the shade of the
tree. As we MOVE CLOSER we TILT up to the sky.
BILLY (O.S.) (CONT'D)
So I can tell her...
DISSOLVE TO:
ONE WEEK EARLIER.

EXT. SKY LINE/TELEGRAPH POLE - DAY

We MOVE across the sky to reveal Billy, dressed in BLUE


'EIRCOM' OVERALLS, sitting on top of a TELEGRAPH POLE. He is
completely lost in thought, staring out at the wide expansive
bogland around him.
He suddenly snaps out of it and goes back to his work of
connecting two wires. He puts the TELEPHONE RECEIVER he's
holding up to his ear. After a moment we HEAR the MUFFLED
SOUNDS OF A MAN AND WOMAN TALKING.
WOMAN'S VOICE (O.S.)
(over the phone)
Listen to me, there was two of us
in it.
MAN'S VOICE (O.S.)
(over the phone)
See ye tonight?
They make KISSING NOISES to each other and hang up.
Billy smiles to himself and goes back to his reverie.

EXT. BOG - EVENING

Billy throws his TOOL BAG into the back of the VAN and takes
out a LARGE BOTTLE OF WATER and pours it over his head to
cool himself down. He then brushes back his wet hair with a
COMB. He removes his work overalls and reaches for a BEN
SHERMAN SHIRT from the back of the van and puts it on.

EXT. BOG - EVENING


The VAN leaves a trail of dust behind as it speeds back
towards a town in the distance.

EXT. GOLF CLUB - NIGHT


A fine, new looking CLUB HOUSE surrounded by CARS. Billy
walks in with TONY TYRELL (40-ish) who wears a SMART JACKET
but is a little over-weight. He greets people warmly.
WOMAN'S VOICE (O.S.)
And I'll just finish by saying what
an absolute honour it is for me to
finally win this prize. Thank you.

INT. GOLF CLUB - NIGHT

Billy gives the odd person a nod but is clearly uncomfortable


with the 'golf' crowd. He looks towards the STAGE where a
BANNER above it declares that it's the club's 'Lady Captains
Prize'.
Underneath it, YVONNE EGAN (55), who wears a lot of 'bling'
but is tastefully made up and in good shape for a woman of
her age, poses for PHOTOGRAPHERS, clutching a LARGE WATERFORD
CRYSTAL VASE. Her husband, ERNIE EGAN (56), is amongst them,
struggling to get the flash on his CAMERA to work.
As Billy gets to the bar with Tony, his eyes scan the room
and then totally FOCUS IN ON...
IMELDA EGAN (23), a stunning looking blonde girl, who sits
CLAPPING and LAUGHING with those around her.
TIME SEEMS TO SLOW DOWN for a moment and it's like Imelda is
the only person in the room.
Billy is broken out of his spell by an elbow from Tony as he
hands him a PINT.
TONY
Are ye with us, Billy?

Billy nods and takes a large swig of his drink but continues
to WATCH as Yvonne and Ernie walk back to their table, where
Imelda gives her mother a hug.
The JAZZ BAND STRIKES UP.
A girl, NAOMI (23), grabs Imelda by the arm and pulls her
towards the dance floor.

INT. GOLF CLUB - MOMENTS LATER

Billy is in a trance as Imelda begins to move to the MUSIC.

EXT. FIELD - DAY


We SLOWLY APPROACH the BIG TREE, drifting by the PEASANTS.

Suddenly, IMELDA'S FACE, writhed in beautiful blonde curls,


APPEARS from behind the trunk and she looks at us for an
instant.

INT. GOLF CLUB - NIGHT


Billy, transfixed, watches Imelda dancing until...

Suddenly a GANG OF PEOPLE crowd onto the floor and block his
view of her.
Disappointed, he turns back towards Tony who diverts his
attention to an attractive brunette, EILISH MOORE (34), who
has just arrived in at the other end of the bar counter.
Tony drains his GLASS and hands it to Billy.
TONY
Eilish still lookin' fierce well.
Billy nods and smiles as Tony leaves his side and heads
towards Eilish.
Billy WATCHES as Eilish greets Tony warmly and they exchange
a little hug. Tony sits down beside her.
Billy takes a large swallow of his pint and pretends to be
okay, but he curses under his breath as now he is on his own.
As Billy stands, clearly a fish out of water, Ernie Egan
arrives in time to be handed a TRAY OF DRINKS by EOGHAN (29),
a younger, earnest looking man.
Ernie and Billy exchange a friendly nod.

ERNIE
Is it yourself, Billy?
BILLY
Think so. See the wife had a good
win.
ERNIE
Ah yeah, another bit of useless
crystal.
A slow grin comes over Billy's face as he sees that, behind
Ernie's shoulder, the BOYLAN BROTHERS, two fine big country
lads, are over at the table hugging and congratulating his
wife Yvonne.
Billy refocuses on Ernie who indicates Eoghan.
ERNIE (CONT'D)
Billy, have ye met Eoghan?
Eoghan holds out his hand and Billy shakes it.
BILLY
Win anything lately yourself,
Ernie?
ERNIE
(laughing)
No, sure I wouldn't hit flying
elephants.
BILLY
(laughing)
Sure ye wouldn't score in a brothel
with a ten pound note stuck to your
lad.
ERNIE
(continues to

Eoghan brandishes a LEAFLET, advertising the product. Billy


has no choice but to take it from him.
EOGHAN
So, ye play the game yourself?
Ernie shakes his head and lets out a sharp laugh.

Billy grins but suddenly feels terribly awkward. Ernie,


embarrassed that he might have insulted him, indicates their
table.
ERNIE
Do ye want to join us?
Billy's eyes dart across to the table.
The empty seat where Imelda was sitting. A definite tension
comes over him. He hesitates, but nods his head and begins to
move off with them when...
Suddenly Imelda arrives back to the table, all smiles and
full of chat and reaches for her drink.
This stops him in his tracks. A pained expression fills his
face, but he clearly can't bring himself to go on. Ernie
turns back to him.
ERNIE (CONT'D)
Are ye with us Bill?
BILLY
Go on lads... I'm... I'll see ye's
later.
Ernie shrugs his shoulders and follows Eoghan back towards
the table.
Billy continues to WATCH them as they deliver the drinks and
Imelda mouths a big 'Thank you' to her Father and smiles her
beautiful smile.

INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

BREDA FARRELL (34) sits, engrossed at something on the


TELEVISION.
We HEAR the RISING SWELL OF AN ORCHESTRAL FILM SCORE.
Breda switches off the TELEVISION and leaves the room.

INT. BATH ROOM - NIGHT

Breda runs the bath. She watches the water gushing out of the
taps.

INT. CORRIDOR - NIGHT


Breda carefully opens a bed room door and looks in on TWO
CHILDREN fast asleep in their beds.

INT. BATH ROOM - NIGHT


Breda lies in the bath up to her neck in the water.
She LOOKS down at her toes that ripple the surface.
She closes her eyes.

EXT. CANAL BANK - NIGHT

A LINE OF VERY STILL FEMALE FIGURES stand on the bank in


silhouette. As a light shines along them, we PICK OUT Breda.
She is made up and wears an ATTRACTIVE PURPLE SUMMER DRESS.
A MALE FIGURE approaches her in silhouette.

INT. BATH ROOM - NIGHT

Breda opens her eyes. She clutches the side of the bath with
one hand.
We SEE that her other hand has disappeared between her legs.
She begins to BREATHE MORE HEAVILY.

EXT. CANAL BANK/CRUISER - NIGHT


Breda takes the MAN'S HAND and steps onto a CRUISER.
We SEE a cabin door opening.

INT. BATH ROOM - NIGHT

Breda closes her eyes as her BREATHING BECOMES HEAVIER AGAIN.

EXT. CRUISER/CABIN - NIGHT


Breda lies with her eyes open, beginning to feel real
pleasure as the MAN kisses her neck and down her body.
MAN'S VOICE
Breda...
Suddenly, we HEAR the LOUD RING TONE of a MOBILE PHONE.

INT. BATH ROOM - NIGHT


Breda's eyes SNAP OPEN and, very flustered, she manages to
stop what she is doing.

She reaches over and whips the PHONE up, checks the number,
gives herself a second, then answers it.
BREDA
(into the phone)
Eilish.
EILISH (O.S.)
(over the phone)
Ye'll never guess, I have James
Galway chattin' me up.
BREDA
You're not goin' toEILISH (O.S.)
- No! Jaysus, he can keep his
golden flute to himself.... Billy's
up at the bar skullin' pints....
Breda doesn't respond and there is an awkward second.
EILISH (O.S.) (CONT'D)
Come here to me... Ye should be out
here.
BREDA
I... I know sure...
The phone signal starts to BREAK UP.
BREDA (CONT'D)
Eilish?... I can't hear ye...
Eilish?
EILISH (O.S.)
Listen, I'll see ye tomorroThe signal CUTS OUT.

Breda switches the phone off.

INT. GOLF CLUB - NIGHT

Billy sits alone at a table, surrounded by a SEA OF PEOPLE


standing around, chatting and laughing with each other. He
looks down aimlessly at the GOLF LEAFLET. He then SEES Eilish
giving Tony a kiss on the cheek and leave him.
Billy's face brightens up.

INT. GOLF CLUB - LATER

The bar's shutters are being pulled down. Billy puts a PINT
down in front of Tony and pats him on the back.
Tony raises his eyes to heaven and shakes his head.
TONY
Not even for old times sake she
wouldn't.
Billy's attention has switched to Imelda, her arm wrapped
tightly around a very tipsy Ernie, heading for the exit door.
Tony turns into Billy.
TONY (CONT'D)
(indicates Imelda)
Amazin' that such a beautiful ride
of a thing could ever have been a
product of his sack.
BILLY
Remember the night you tried it on.
Tony shakes his head and drinks.
Billy LAUGHS and playfully ruffles Tony's perfect hair.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Ye know somethin' James Galway, I
think your flute's losin' its
touch.
Tony immediately presses his hair back into place.
They turn to SEE Imelda trying to move Ernie who is dawdling
at the exit.
ERNIE
(to Imelda)
Where's your mother? I can't see
her.
Imelda patiently manages to move him out the door.
Billy nudges Tony, who is just in time to see the TWO BOYLAN
BROTHERS leave surreptitiously with Yvonne through a side
emergency exit.
Billy and Tony exchange a knowing look and grin.

EXT. GOLF CLUB - NIGHT

A TAXI pulls up outside the now darkened club house. As Billy


and Tony move towards it, they HEAR the REV OF AN ENGINE.
A WHITE VAN with the two Boylan brothers sitting in front
suddenly speeds out from behind the clubhouse and drives on
up towards the front gates.

INT. TAXI - NIGHT

Billy and Tony get into the back of the taxi and nod to the
DRIVER.
As the taxi pulls away, they both look out the rear window to
SEE Yvonne appearing from behind the club house, fixing her
dress and hair, as she walks on towards her MERCEDES.
Billy and Tony shake their heads and grin.
TONY
Fair play to her... Ye see Bill,
it's the like of that keeps ye
young.
Billy nods but keeps his eyes towards the window.
Tony, with a smug look on his face, is talking away and looks
to Billy and the Driver for a reaction every now and again.
TONY (CONT'D)
Like my young one, she's only
twenty five, secretary in the
Dublin branch. So one evenin', she
asks me to take it out and show
her. Goes down like... Straight in,
no kissin'... Unbelievable.
Billy smiles but STARES out the window and doesn't seem that
connected to the world.

EXT. FARRELL HOUSE - NIGHT


Billy WATCHES as the TAXI disappears around the corner.
Outside the bungalow, he takes out his DOOR KEY but pauses
for a moment. He STARES up into the night sky.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT


Breda lies in bed with the lights off. Her eyes open. She
HEARS the FOOTSTEPS coming along the corridor.

Billy enters the room.


He undresses carefully.
Breda keeps her back to him and doesn't stir as he slowly
gets in under the covers and lies down.
Billy stares up at the ceiling. He closes his eyes. He starts
to SNORE.
Breda's eyes remain open.

INT. CHURCH - MORNING

Breda with her two children, EDEL (9), tall for her age with
a bright open face, and JAMES (8), who seems a far more
serious child, stand at the side of the church in front of
the PENNY CANDLES.
The LAST OF THE MASS-GOERS files out.
Breda and Edel put COINS in the slot and pick up TWO CANDLES
and go to light them. James ignores this, buried in his
GAMEBOY. Breda gestures to him to light a candle but James
shakes his head and makes a face. Breda raises her eyes to
heaven and looks to Edel who gives her a warm smile.
EDEL
Ma... I'll light one for him.
BREDA
Thanks love.
Breda lovingly places her hand on James shoulder. He glances
up at her and Breda smiles and sticks out her tongue. A
slight smirk comes over James face but he is determined to
remain in sullen mood and refocuses on his game.
Breda's attention DRIFTS to the ALTAR and she keeps her eyes
on it, as if momentarily lost in memory.
She is jolted into the here and now by FATHER LAWLOR (54),
who suddenly arrives behind her.
FATHER LAWLOR
How's Breda?
Breda nods and smiles.
FATHER LAWLOR (CONT'D)
(to the children)
How's the lads?
Edel acknowledges the priest and moves over to Breda.

James is completely disinterested in him.


FATHER LAWLOR (CONT'D)
How's Billy this weather?
EDEL
They're married ten years next
Saturday!
FATHER LAWLOR
Jeeez, it doesn't seem that long
since I stood in front of the two
of ye.... A great day it was.
Breda smiles but this subject seems to make her
uncomfortable. Edel realises this and clasps her mother's
hand.
EDEL
Come on, Ma.
Breda, grateful for the excuse to leave, allows herself to be
led away.
BREDA
Good bye, Father.
James follows after them as Father Lawlor heads back towards
the altar.

INT. FARRELL HOUSE/KITCHEN - MORNING

Breda is in the kitchen preparing the Sunday LAMB ROAST.


Behind her, through the sitting room door, James and Edel
watch cartoons on the TELEVISION.

INT. BED ROOM - MORNING


A hung-over Billy lies in bed, his eyes fixed on the
PAINTING.
The PAINTING fills the frame.
Breda enters the room and passes through the frame.
After a beat she passes back through in the opposite
direction and glances down at Billy.
Billy's eyes don't move, fixated on the painting.

INT. CORRIDOR - MORNING

Outside the room, Breda hesitates and turns as if to go back


in, but then decides against it and carries on back to the
kitchen.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY


Breda has the LAMB ROAST in the OVEN.

Billy sits at the table buried in the PAPER with a HALF-EATEN


BOWL OF CEREAL in front of him.
He GLANCES UP and SEES Breda with her back to him, busy
preparing a SEPARATE DIET MEAL for herself.
He REFOCUSES on the paper.
BREDA
So did ye see Eilish out there last
night.
BILLY
Hmmm.
BREDA
Were ye talkin' to her?
BILLY
Naw.
He puts the paper down to SEE Breda looking at him.
Breda opens her mouth but no words come out.
She goes back to her meal preparation.
Billy goes back to the paper but we can tell he's not reading
a word.
A very agitated James BURSTS in from the sitting room. Edel
bustles in behind him.
JAMES
EDEL
(very irate)
(to her parents)
I'm not goin' to football
I told him not to be annoyin'
anymore, I hate it!!!
ye's...
(to James)
Course ye are...

No... I hate it!!!

Sure you're a brilliant
player!

Billy throws down his paper.


BILLY (CONT'D)
(very angry)
For Jaysus sake lads, I'm warnin'
ye... if ye's don't shut up!
JAMES
But Da!
BILLY
Da nothin', now stay Jaysus quiet!
Edel slinks off back into the sitting room.
James waits for a moment as his frustration explodes.
JAMES
I hate the whole lotta ye!
He runs out the door.
Breda turns to Billy who holds up his hands.
They HEAR a door SLAMMING at the back of the house.
BREDA
Don't know what's wrong with that
boy at the moment.
Billy stands up and carries the CEREAL BOWL to the sink.
BILLY
Ah, he'll be okay.
He moves towards the door.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Right.. I'll just be... Be back
within the hour.
They give each other a nod and Billy leaves the room.
Breda stands still for a moment, she HEARS the BANG of the
front door. She returns to the preparation of her diet meal.

Breda LOOKS through the window to the back yard to see...

James, in a sulk, kicking his FOOTBALL violently against the


wall.
Breda shakes her head and goes back to preparing her meal.

INT. MAC'S FRONT BAR - DAY

Billy walks in and SEES QUENCHERS QUINN (50s), the sour faced
bar man, looking up from his PAPER. Quenchers immediately
goes to pour a PINT for him.
Billy exchanges nods with Tony and the very rotund, FEGGY
FENNELLY (49), and takes his place on the third bar stool
beside them.
Billy then HEARS GIRLS' LAUGHTER from the far corner of the
bar and when he looks around he spots BREFFNI GREHAN (35),
who wears a LEATHER JACKET and sports a pony tail.
Breffni catches Billy's eye and breaks into a huge grin.
Billy suddenly recognises him. Breffni waves him to come
over. Billy takes his pint from Quenchers and turns to Feggy
and Tony.
BILLY
Back in a sec'.
As Billy leaves, the two men shake their heads and do not
look happy.
Billy arrives over and his face changes colour when he sees
that Breffni is sitting with Imelda and Naomi. Breffni holds
out his hand.
BREFFNI
Well by Christ, as I live and
breath....
BILLY
Jaysus, Breffni....
Although he is clearly pleased to see Breffni, it takes him a
second to compose himself in order to shake his hand.
Billy nods hesitantly at the two girls, now feeling painfully
self-conscious at being so close to Imelda.
BREFFNI
So how's it hangin', man?
BILLY
(just about managing to
speak)
Are... Are ye... Ye back for long?

BREFFNI
Well I hear there's more
construction goin' on in this town
then anywhere on the planet so...
BREFFNI looks to the two girls.
BREFFNI (CONT'D)
Do ye know this man?
IMELDA
Ah yeah like...
Billy nods and tries desperately to act cool.
BILLY
Yeah... I mean...
IMELDA
Not really... Billy isn't itBILLY
- Imelda... Yeah Billy... that's
me...
(to Breffni)
Seen her around the... both of them
... around the town...
Billy laughs nervously.
IMELDA
(indicates Breffni)
He was tellin' us about the...
BREFFNI
Oh yeah. I'll just finish the
story...
Breffni turns back to the girls.
BREFFNI(CONT'D)
So right there we are in Frisco...
the U.S. marine, wreckin' my gaff
right... Takin' his rage out ye
know... Full metal jacket... So's
we ended up smokin' a bong... Peace
pipe... All cool...
IMELDA
Fuckin' mad!
Billy nods enthusiastically and drinks a good third of the
way down his glass.
BREFFNI
So, anyway, you still with Breda?

BILLY
(laughs)
Yeah. Two kids.
BREFFNI
Good man. Ages?
BILLY
James is eight and Edel is nine.
Sure ye'd be strangled with them.
BREFFNI
That's something Bill. To have
built the nest, settled into it.
Billy gives BREFFNI a look, surprised that this 'Man of the
World' has any interest in family.
BREFFNI leans into him.
BREFFNI (CONT'D)
And how is Breda?
Billy shrugs, again very aware of Imelda's proximity.
BILLY
She's grand....
IMELDA
She's in me Ma's club to lose
weight, isn't she?
BILLY
Yeah... She is... She's... Lookin'
real well.
The girls look to each other and are about to leave.
Billy senses this and turns to them. He opens and closes his
mouth.
Imelda drains her GLASS.
IMELDA
Right so.
Billy decides he must speak.
BILLY
So... Did ye enjoy the golf club
last night?
IMELDA
Naw, sure I was only out there cos'
a Ma.

BILLY
I'm not bein' funny now but they
have a language all their own out
there, birdies, eagles, fuckin'
albatrosses. It's like listenin'
to a wildlife programme.
Imelda nods and her face breaks into a BIG LAUGH of
recognition. Naomi and BREFFNI smile as well.
Billy is thrilled at making Imelda laugh.
BREFFNI signals Quenchers to get another round.
BREFINE
Same again, Quenchers.
Billy turns to see Tony and Feggy giving him dirty looks but
he very definitely is going to ignore their disapproval. He

Breda goes to the sideboard and carefully takes out a PAPER
PARCEL. She unwraps it to reveal PURPLE DRESS MATERIAL. ONE
PIECE is clearly taking shape as a dress. She unfolds the
OTHER LENGTH OF MATERIAL and lays it out on the table and
with a MEASURING TAPE begins to make some calculations.

Quenchers leans onto the counter with Billy, Imelda and Naomi
as they listen to Breffni who is in the middle of another
story.
BREFFNI
So's anyway's his name was

Walkin' along and I saw this young
kid just slippin' down the bank and
into the water. The screams of her,
splashin' around, So I jumped in
and pulled her out.

I remember that. You were on the
front of the local paper.
Imelda raises her GLASS.

That's cool.
Billy is beaming but eyeing the CLOCK, he drains his GLASS.
BILLY
Well, I better... The dinner,
'Home, James!'
As Billy prepares to leave, Imelda turns to him and Breffni.
IMELDA
We're havin' a party next Saturday
above in the house so... Come
along.
Billy nods and smiles as if Imelda's invitation was just for
him alone.
BILLY
I'll see ye's.
He walks on down the bar and salutes Feggy and Tony who don't
respond, still annoyed that he spurned their company.

Billy pauses for a second outside the door. He closes his


eyes and exhales, a tension leaving his body. A smile appears
on his face and he looks up into the sky.

Billy comes in the front door, now clearly in great spirits.


He goes into the kitchen as Breda serves up Edel and James
their dinner and takes his place at the table.
BILLY
(smiling)

Breda gets up to get Billy his dinner.
Edel and James don't respond.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Breda, why didn't ye tell me that
our kids had lost their voices...
I'll just have to say the magic

BILLY

Billy CATCHES Breda's eye and gives her a wink.
Breda is pleased but puzzled at Billy's sudden good mood.

Breda stands at the window and WATCHES as...

Billy, at the wheel of the van, leans across Edel and James
to shut the door.
Breda raises her hand, ready to give them a wave goodbye, but
her family don't see her as the van pulls out onto the road.

Breda cleans up the DINNER PLATES.
She stops and STARES at the HALF-EATEN SUNDAY ROAST.

purple dress material. Other pieces of the material with

We SEE James' reflection in the water. He holds the 'CRASH
BANDICOOT' GAME and is eating CHOCOLATE.

We SEE that he is standing in an OLD BARGE that is moored to


the bank. He stares down in to the water, deep in thought
with a little frown on his face.
BILLY (O.S.)
James, get away out of that!
James looks up to SEE Billy and Edel approaching him.
James steps off the barge and onto the bank.
Billy and Edel pass by a MAN who is untying a ROPE from a
BOLLARD.
BILLY (CONT'D)
(To Edel)
Jaysus, how often have I said it to
him!
The Man overhears Billy and looks up briefly before hopping
onto his boat. Further up, PEOPLE are fishing.
Billy and Edel are now standing alongside James. Behind them,
there is a GROUP OF DRY-DOCKED BOATS that have seen better
days.
Edel indicates a LIFE BUOY floating in the canal, where it
has obviously been tossed in by vandals.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Shockin'.
EDEL
That's why ye had to jump in that
time.
Billy crouches down and points his finger at a spot in the
water.
BILLY
Yeah... Just over there, lads...
Edel is beaming as she obviously loves to recall her father's
deed.

watches it as it moves away, gathering speed, until it turns
the first bend in the canal and is out of sight.

Edel stands at the sitting room door. She watches Billy in


his BEN SHERMAN SHIRT, standing in the hall in front of the
MIRROR looking at himself.
Billy turns towards Edel.
BILLY

He calls in to Breda and James.
BILLY (CONT'D)
See ye's later.
He leaves the house.
Edel turns back to the sofa where Breda sits with James.
EDEL
I remember when you and Da went out
together on a Sunday night.
Breda, sensing the challenge in her daughter's voice, barely
nods at her and looks towards the television.

Breda lies in bed with her eyes open.
She HEARS FOOTSTEPS on the corridor.
Billy enters the room.
Breda does not turn around but she can HEAR him taking his
clothes off and climbing in under the covers.
She can feel him in beside her.
She LOOKS down to see his arm moving slowly around her and
she closes her eyes as he snuggles into her back.

After a moment, Breda slowly turns and places her hand


tenderly on his face. They look into each other for a moment.
She takes her hand away and kisses him lightly on the lips.
Billy kisses her back.

Breda reaches down to his crotch and feels him.
After a moment, Billy abruptly turns his back to her.
He is very still and silent. Breda doesn't persist.
She settles back in under the covers on her side of the bed.
She looks sad and lonely as her eyes settle on the window and
she HEARS the BARK of a dog outside.

EXT. SCHOOL - DAY

Breda stands outside the school gate looking in at the yard


and the school shed. BIRDS swoop down to scavenge SCHOOL
LUNCH LEFT OVERS. Breda seems lost for a moment as she
focuses on one particular spot: the BENCH in the CORNER OF
THE SHED. The BELL SOUNDS and HOARDS OF CHILDREN begin to
emerge from the exits and spill out into the yard.
Breda WATCHES the different groups coming towards her.
The LADS with the FOOTBALL SHOUTING and LAUGHING at each
other.
TWO LADS walking side by side, one with GLASSES, exchanging
CARDS.
The LAD on his own, walking with his head down as if every
burden of the school lies on his shoulders. Breda suddenly
realises that this is James.
James LOOKS up and see's Breda and they meet at the gate.
BREDA
How's tricks?
James shrugs and avoids Breda's look.
Edel walks towards them with a GAGGLE OF FRIENDS. She says
her goodbyes and joins Breda and James.
BREDA (CONT'D)
Are we right?
Edel nods and LOOKS to James who ignores her.
BREDA (CONT'D)
He's not talkin' to me either.

INT. VAN/MAIN STREET - EVENING


Billy pulls up sharply to join the QUEUE OF TRAFFIC.
He KEEPS HIS EYES ON the TRAFFIC LIGHTS, willing them to
change.
BILLY
Come fuckin' on.

His face suddenly changes expression as he spots something on


the street.
Imelda and Naomi striding up the town towards Mac's Bar.
The lights turn green but he doesn't see this and leans out
the window. Cars BEEP impatiently behind him. Billy ignores
them and CALLS over in the girls' direction.
BILLY (CONT'D)
How are ye!
The girls turn and, just before they disappear in the front
door of Mac's, Imelda gives him a friendly wave.
To Billy, it's like she's inviting him to join them.
The cars CONTINUE TO BEEP behind him. He curses at them under
his breath and drives on.

Breda hurriedly comes down the hall, dressed in a LOOSE
JUMPER and fixes herself in the HALL MIRROR. Eilish checks

BREDA
Thanks, love. Where the hell is
your Da?
They HEAR the SOUND OF THE VAN PULLING UP outside.

James doesn't answer. Edel points her PHONE at Breda.
EDEL
Smile, Ma.
Breda hesitantly strikes a pose, Edel SNAPS the picture.
Breda LAUGHS and dashes off with Eilish.
BILLY
(shouting after her)
Good luck!
Billy shuts the door and LOOKS to Edel. He seems irritated.
James emerges from the sitting room.
JAMES
I'm starvin', what's for tea?
BILLY
(sharply)
I... Dunno. Chinese, Pizza,
anythin' ye like.
Billy heads towards the bedroom, annoyed at not being able to
hide his frustration from them.

Eilish's CAR pulls up outside the front gate. There is a


sizable lawn behind it, leading up to the large new looking,
four-bedroomed house with two miniature 'Dallas' style
pillars at either side of the front door. Yvonne's MERCEDES
is parked out front alongside a LEXUS and a YELLOW MINI.

They sit in chairs facing Yvonne and a WOMAN standing on a

'Slim and Slender' written in large letters.
All heads WHIP around immediately and look to Breda and
Eilish.
Breda nods her head in apology.
Yvonne gives Breda a big smile.
YVONNE
Glad you could make it, Breda.
Everyone continues to WATCH Breda until she finds her seat.
Yvonne clears her throat.
YVONNE (CONT'D)
Now, we'll continue.
She checks the WEIGHING SCALES and then pauses, to build
dramatic tension. She slowly looks to a LARGE YOUNG WOMAN on
the scales and then to the audience.
YVONNE (CONT'D)
Ah now, Margaret, I'm afraid you
haven't made it. Nearly, but as
they say 'Nearly Never Won the
Race'.
The room BURSTS into SYMPATHETIC APPLAUSE as the dejected
Margaret returns to her seat.
YVONNE (CONT'D)
And now I'd like to call on...
Breda Farrell.
The room descends into a hush as Breda gets up and steps onto
the scales.
As before Yvonne checks the weight.
Breda waits with bated breath for the result.
She looks out at all the expectant faces.
Yvonne turns to her and beams.
YVONNE (CONT'D)
Congratulations, Breda. You have
reached your target.
Yvonne hands Breda the club's SPECIAL AWARD, which is a
SCULPTED STONE which represents the weight lost. Breda is
thrilled as she takes her APPLAUSE and then sits down.

seems distracted. Edel looks to him.

Breda has no option but to give in and she settles back and

He GLANCES away to a PHOTO OF BREDA on her dressing table.
She is young in the photo and laughing.
He closes his eyes for a moment and then dials a number and
waits for the call to be answered.

Billy, with the NEW SHIRT on, opens the front door to reveal

and Ernie finishing PINTS and getting up to leave.
ERNIE
There's himself.
BREFFNI
Hey Bill, we're just off.
(indicates Eoghan)
I promised this dude that I'd bring
him out to Croghan Hill except
Ernie here won't give us a lift.
Ernie shakes his head and laughs.
ERNIE
Jaysus, no way boys.
EOGHAN
Have to get back to your women

ERNIE
Ah no, Yvonne's busy with her Slim
and Slenders... Imelda was here but

ones. The CAR is parked behind them.

know the golden flute was a fair
sight when it got goin' but it took
a fierce amount of work to get it
there and a lotta encouragement to

Breda turns the BOTTLE upside down to let the last drop of
wine into her mouth. Eilish LAUGHS at the concentration on
Breda's face.

Suddenly, they SEE car headlights flashing up through the


window and HEAR a CAR ENGINE pulling up outside. The lights
vanish and they HEAR the SLAM of a car door.
Breda can't help GIGGLING. Eilish SHUSHES her.
Breda suddenly SEES a torch shining at them through the
window.
They both freeze at the SOUND of the DOOR UNLOCKING.
Breda STARES ahead as the door opens and the FIGURE OF A MAN
fills the frame.
He shines the torch in their faces so they can't see him
properly.
He then lowers the torch from their eyes and LOOKS at them.
Breda can now MAKE OUT the MAN, in some kind of UNIFORM.
He TAKES THEM IN slowly.
Breda eyes are FIXED on the Man.
She gets out of the slowly and goes towards him.
Breda is now face to face with the Man and for a moment it
looks like she could lean in and kiss him.
BREDA
My name's Breda.
The Man takes a step back.
MAN

The Man takes another step back.

Billy walks slowly from the toilet and HEARS LOUD VOICES
coming from the bar. He pauses and WATCHES what's going on.
Breffni and Eoghan are sitting with the Pretty Girl that
Billy had seen earlier going into the toilet, and her FRIEND.
But there is also a large young man, DESSIE (25), standing
over Breffni and waving his fist at him.
DESSIE
(shouting)
Think ye can chat up my mot, do ye,
ye fuckin' bollocks, I'll bury
ye!!!
Breffni starts to LAUGH. Suddenly, Dessie grabs Breffni up
and holds him by his collar.
All eyes and ears in the bar ZONE IN on the incident.
Billy realises that the situation is close to boiling point.
He makes a move but hesitates. He then goes for it, and walks
quickly over to the scene.
BILLY
There's no harm done. Look it she's
a grand lookin' girl. Ye can't help
fellas wantin' to talk to her....
It's a compliment to you like.
Dessie takes this in and considers his next move.
The BARMAN has joined the scene.
BARMAN
Calm it down Dessie and I'll ask

a CARD. She pauses for a second and then resumes and seems
happy with what she's put down. She puts the card in an
ENVELOPE and hides it in one of the presses.

Breda carefully unfolds the PURPLE DRESS and holds it out in


front of her. She lays it out on the bed and undresses to her
NEW SEXY LINGERIE. She slowly and painstakingly puts the
purple dress on.
The moment of truth has arrived as she slowly does up the ZIP
at the back.
The dress fits her perfectly.
She is thrilled and stands LOOKING AT herself in the MIRROR
of the wardrobe.
She RETURNS HER GAZE to the mirror and wraps her arms around
herself feeling the material of the dress.
She closes her eyes.
She HEARS the van PULLING UP OUTSIDE and then the FRONT DOOR
OPENING.
Breda opens her eyes, LOOKS AROUND and SEES Billy in the door
way looking at her.
Breda slowly turns fully around to show herself and the dress
off.
It takes a second for Billy to fully TAKE IN how well Breda

She steps into him and touches a stain on his shirt sleeve.
Billy visibly becomes very still.

Ah, the ol' van was actin' up.
Breda gently takes hold of Billy's hand.
BREDA
So ye like the dress?
Billy looks at her and nods.
Breda slowly lays her head on Billy's shoulder. Her hand goes
around his waist.
Billy responds and puts his arms around her. But he remains
extremely tense. Breda starts to slowly sway and they begin
to move as if in a slow dance. Billy closes his eyes and
seems to give into it. He relaxes into Breda. She holds him
tighter.
After a moment, Billy opens his eyes and awkwardly pulls away
from her. He raises his stained hands.
BILLY
I better... Me hands, don't want to
get the dress dirty.
He heads into the en suite bathroom.
Breda stands, flushed and extremely pleased.

INT. FARRELL HOUSE/SITTING ROOM - EVENING

Breda, with the purple dress on and now tastefully made up,
places dishes of ice cream in front of her children who sit
on the sofa watching television.
James looks as if he has been crying.
Breda looks to him.

Breda eyes the MANTELPIECE CLOCK.

She's late as usual. I used't say

Breda looks hesitantly around her. Every now and again she

Breda grins and visibly grows in confidence.
They reach the counter and Breda sees Ernie Egan turning and
barely recognising her.

He indicates the LOUD MUSIC and HORDES OF DRUNK YOUNG PEOPLE.
BILLY (CONT'D)
... Later on, ye know, at home.
Breda springs up and nearly knocks over the DRINKS on the
table.
She plants a kiss on Billy's cheek. He is very taken aback
but can't help smiling at Breda's happy face.
He then heads off, GLANCING BACK at her before disappearing
into the crowd.

Billy manages to get a free cubicle in the packed toilet.
The lock is broken so he leans his back against the door.
He takes out the ENVELOPE that Breda had given him.
It is an ANNIVERSARY CARD with a CARTOON IMAGE.

He seems touched by the sentiments and closes the CARD and


replaces it in the ENVELOPE.
He wipes sweat from his brow.
He seems very agitated, moves to the toilet bowl as if he

Billy looks down at her hand on his. He slowly nods his head.
Breda smiles and gives him his JACKET.
Breda slowly removes her hand from his and places it tenderly

They look into each other for a moment. Breda kisses him on

She rests her head on his shoulder.
The SOUND of the DISCO FADES TO A LOW HUM hum as he listens
to what Breda has to say.

Breda walks up onto the path beside the water.
A ROW OF SHRUBS block the bank from the street.
She stands for a moment and wipes her eyes.

She drops Billy's JACKET and her BAG to the ground and stands
at the very edge of the bank and her eyes FOCUS on her own
reflection in the water.
She SHIFTS HER GAZE to a BOAT moored to the bank.
Deep in thought, she doesn't hear or see the FIGURE that
appears behind her in the shadows.

Startled, Breda turns around. It's EOGHAN.

Breda recognises him. She picks up her BAG and Billy's JACKET

Billy, Feggy and Tony open the front gate and walk up to the
front door past the MERCEDES, the LEXUS and Imelda's MINI.
Billy's eyes are glazed and happy, delighted with the MUSIC
and the NOISE of people coming from the house which to him
seems lit up by a golden light in every window.

Breda and Eoghan sit in silence until Eoghan turns to her.


EOGHAN
Ye's had a row?
BREDA
No we fuckin' didn't, that's the

They listen to the cars on the street. People on their way
home as the night winds down.

INT. EGAN'S HOUSE/SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

At the crowded party, Billy stands in the middle of Feggy,


Tony, Naomi and, most importantly, Imelda. He is now very
drunk but doing his level best to be the centre of attention.
BILLY
So the guard stops Tex in his Hiace which he has cut into an Lshaped pick up and says that the
van is in an illegal condition and
and the Tex says 'I didn't rightly
know that partner' and that he's no
tax or insurance, 'I didn't rightly
know that Officer' and he's got not
one but four bald tyres... 'Excuse
me Officer', says Tex, 'Better make
that five, the one in the boot is
the same'!
The company all LAUGH and a delighted Billy takes a large
slug of his CAN and finishes it.
Imelda leans across and hands him ANOTHER ONE.
IMELDA
That's for helpin' us earlier.
BILLY
(indicates Naomi)
Glad to see ye's made up.
IMELDA
Ah yeah.

Billy tries to look into Imelda's eyes but she turns to Naomi
to move away.
Billy is desperate to keep them there.
BILLY
I do listen in on the phone calls
sometimes and I heard Tex on one of
them sex lines and...
The girls give him a look.
NAOMI
Ye listen in on people?
BILLY
Yeah... The things ye hear... Gas
like....
There is an extremely embarrassing silence from everyone.
Billy is trying to dig himself out of this when Eilish
arrives in with Breffni and storms up to him.
EILISH
You're as drunk as fuck. Cop on and
go home!
Eilish walks on. Breffni follows her, giving Billy a
disdainful look.
Imelda and Naomi take the opportunity to make their escape.
Billy is left with Tony who sighs and shakes his head.
BILLY
All right for you... a young one on
the go in Dublin.
Tony shrugs and moves off. Billy grabs hold of his arm.
Tony tries to free his arm but Billy keeps hold of it.
TONY
Jaysus, Billy, don't believe
everything that I tell ye.
Billy is a little stunned and lets go the arm. He watches as
Tony heads straight over to chat up Yvonne.
A YOUNG FELLA on guitar launches into 'July' by Mundy.
EVERYONE joins in.
Billy finds himself on his own beside the kitchen door.

for her.
BREDA

EOGHAN
I'm listening, Breda.
BREDA

Breda is getting upset but trying not to show it.
BREDA (CONT'D)

They sit in silence and LISTEN to the SHOUTS from the street.
Breda looks out at the OLD BARGE moored to the dock.
She gets up and walks to the edge of the bank and looks in
the windows of the BARGE. There is no one at home. She steps
onto the craft.

Billy steps unsteadily into the kitchen and grabs up a BOTTLE


OF SOUTHERN COMFORT and takes a large swig of it.
He stumbles into a CHAIR against the wall and he sits down on
it. He is glad to be off his feet. He takes another slug from
the BOTTLE. Gradually his eyes are getting heavier and
eventually he slumps into the chair and dozes off.

Breda and Eoghan sit huddled together on the barge. Breda


looks to him and grins at the sound of a DRUNK BAWLING out
'The Fields of Athenry' from the street below.
BREDA
You must think that I'm stone mad.
EOGHAN
Why?
BREDA
Climbin' into boats belongin' to
strangers.
EOGHAN
Well that has nothing on
approaching security guards out in
the bog.
BREDA
Oh Jaysus, I can't believe that I
told ye that... Still locked I
was....
EOGHAN
I really enjoyed it... The chat
that night. You were real funny...
And I... Well... For the first time
in ages I had a proper chat with
someone... You were very easy to
talk to.
BREDA
With Billy snoring in the corner.
EOGHAN
In the disco I told Billy that I
thought you looked great... I
actually thought that you looked
really beautiful...
BREDA
Would ye go way from me.
Breda can't help grinning to herself.
She becomes serious and looks at the water and then at
Billy's JACKET which lies beside her. She spots the
ANNIVERSARY CARD in one of the pockets and takes it out and
looks at it.

We were married ten years ago
tonight but he's not here, is he?
Breda lets go of the CARD. Eoghan turns to her.
BREDA (CONT'D)
You think ye know someone but do
you ever really get to know them at

EOGHAN
He should have gone home with you.
They both HEAR a GIRL SINGING some kind of popular love
ballad on the road. Although clearly drunk she has a good
voice.
Breda LOOKS to him and lets out a NERVOUS LAUGH.
Eoghan leans towards her and slowly their lips meet in a
kiss.
They withdraw from each other but then kiss again, deeper
this time.
EOGHAN (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Breda.
They kiss with unabashed drunken passion.
Breda holds his face in her hands.
EOGHAN (CONT'D)
Breda.
He kisses her again and she responds hungrily.
She pushes him down onto the floor of the BOAT. His hands
move down to pull up her DRESS.
She starts to undo his TROUSERS.
They frantically negotiate the awkward space and their
UNDERWEAR.
He clings hard to the bottom of the PURPLE DRESS, and enters
her.
Breda clasps onto him as they make love.
She CATCHES SIGHT of the door of the boat behind her. She
keeps focused on this for a moment.

She grabs hold of his hair as she starts to feel some real
pleasure.
BREDA

Eoghan GROANS, exhaling in LONG DEEP BREATHS.
EOGHAN

They continue to make love as Breda climbs astride him.
She looks up into the night sky. She lets out a SMALL CRY.
Eoghan lets out one FINAL DEEP GROAN.
They are now very still except for their HEAVY BREATH.
Breda wipes a tear from her eye.
BREDA (CONT'D)
Would ye mind just holdin' me. Just
for a while.
Eoghan smiles and takes her in his arms and cuddles her.
Breda buries her head into his shoulder and closes her eyes.

Billy still lies slumped in the chair as the SING-SONG


CONTINUES in the other room. A LOUD BLAST of 'House of the
Rising Sun' comes from the crowd in the other room and wakes
him up.
BILLY
(slurring)
There is a house in New Orleans.
They call the Rising Sun.
Through his drunken haze he does his best to TAKE IN his
surroundings.
BILLY (CONT'D)
What the fuck am I... Have to...
He struggles to his feet and takes a step back to steady
himself.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Have to finish the dance.... Home,
James.

He WALKS towards the back door.


He is distracted by someone entering the kitchen behind him.
It is Imelda.
He freezes as she passes him by.
IMELDA
Are ye off Bill.... Take care of
yourself.
Imelda continues on until she reaches the door of the back
toilet.
Billy nods and takes the two steps to the back door and puts
his hand on it. He pauses and looks back just as the toilet
door is closing.
BILLY
Good night Imelda.
Imelda's face and blonde curls suddenly reappear from behind
the toilet door.
IMELDA
Good night.
Billy's face changes expression.
The sight of her like this instantly sparks off the image
from his fantasy. Her face appearing from behind the tree.
Imelda disappears again and the toilet door closes.
Billy is still transfixed.
He slowly turns from the back door and moves towards the
toilet.
BILLY
Imelda, I have to tell you
something.
He reaches the toilet door and tries to push it open but she
has put the lock on.
BILLY (CONT'D)
I have to tell ye about the
painting.
Billy leans his head against the door.

painting, behind the big tree

because they all know now that I'm
havin' Imelda Egan and they're not.
Imelda... Can ye hear me.
He KNOCKS on the door. The toilet FLUSHES and then the door
UNLOCKS.
Billy pushes the door open and steps in front of Imelda.
Imelda smiles nervously.
IMELDA
Jeeez, you're stone mad.
BILLY
I'm mad about you. The most
beautiful thing that I've ever
seen.
Billy takes her arm. Imelda resists but Billy holds her
tightly.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Come here Imelda, I just want to
tell you about the painting.
Imelda tries to leave but Billy puts his other hand around
her waist.
IMELDA
Would ye fuck off!
Billy is now squeezing Imelda tightly with his eyes closed
like he's lost in a dream.
IMELDA (CONT'D)
(screaming)
Let fuckin' go of me!!!
Imelda makes another effort to get free. Billy pulls her back
but loses his balance. They stumble and then fall onto the
toilet floor.
Billy HITS his head against the side of the TOILET BOWL.

Imelda is SCREAMING.
The WHOLE PARTY is suddenly crowded around the doorway.
Feggy, Tony, Breffni, Eilish, Yvonne and Naomi all LOOK ON in
horror.
For a terrible moment noone moves or says a word.
Suddenly Imelda springs up away from Billy and goes to her
mother.
Eilish steps in front of Billy.
EILISH
You're a fuckin' disgrace! The big
hard man... Well we all know that
there's nothing ever hard about
you!!!
Billy looks up at the faces and he starts to LAUGH. A
desperate kind of LAUGH.
Breffni holds out his hand to help Billy up.
BREFFNI
Come on, Bill.
Billy SLAPS it away.
BILLY
I'm all fuckin' right.
Billy struggles to his feet by holding onto the toilet. He
accidently causes it to FLUSH.
YVONNE
GET OUT!!!!
Billy LOOKS to Imelda for a moment.
She RETURNS his look with an expression of absolute disgust.
Billy stumbles through the crowd.

Billy walks as best he can towards the front gate but falls
into the door of Imelda's MINI.
He squints his eyes against the early morning sun.
He wipes blood from the cut on his head.

Breda opens her eyes and gives a little shiver. She
disengages herself slowly from Eoghan.
He looks at her and smiles.
EOGHAN
Listen, I...
Breda leans in quickly and very deliberately shuts him up
with a kiss.
BREDA
I have to go home now. Goodbye.

She picks up her BAG and Billy's JACKET but doesn't see the
ANNIVERSARY CARD and leaves it behind as she steps out of the
BOAT. She walks on along the bank away from him.

EXT. STREET - DAWN

Breda doesn't look back. She puts the JACKET around herself
for warmth as it has started to lightly drizzle.
A COUPLE IN THEIR SUNDAY BEST pass by and give her an odd
look.
Breda doesn't care and gives them a smile and a nod.
She walks on and pulls the jacket's collar up around her
face. She smells Billy's after shave off it.
Her smile gradually disappears.

Breda passes by the shop with the LINE OF FEMALE MANNEQUINS


in the window, who wear smiles and nice dresses. Without
stopping, she GLANCES at them briefly and for some reason
this makes her feel very upset. But she is not going to cry.
She walks on, a steely look in her eyes.

He reaches the BENCH and slumps down into it.
He LOOKS OUT at the water and the LONE CRUISER.

Breda lies perfectly still in the bath. There is not a ripple


in the water. She looks to her PURPLE DRESS on the floor. She

PHONE in her hand.

Her eyes fill with tears at the sight of him.

Billy LOOKS UP to see James upset, bewildered little face,
appearing behind Edel.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Jaysus son... I'm sorry... Edel,...
I'll always mind ye....
James is frozen to the spot as if he can't quite take in what
he's seeing.
EDEL
Ye shouldn't get so...
(losing her temper)
GET SO DRUNK DA!!!
Billy nods and sinks back away from his daughter.
The two children turn to SEE their mother, in her BATHROBE,
arriving beside them.
BREDA
Come on, the two of ye's, come
away.
EDEL
No! What happened... It was your

happened.
BREDA

EDEL
(indicates Billy's wound)

Edel breaks into floods of tears. Breda grabs the hands of


both her children and pulls them away from the scene.
Billy WATCHES his two very upset children and his wife leave
him alone. He closes his eyes to fight back the tears, and
wipes a trickle of blood from the cut on his forehead.
He opens his eyes and LOOKS up at something above him.
The PAINTING of the bright sunny sky and field of long grass
with the GROUP OF PEASANTS gathered around it.
Nothing moves in it now.
Billy continues to STARE up at the PAINTING.
BILLY
Makin' me sick... All this in
me.... Want to see her... So I can
tell her...
Breda, comes back in and closes the bed room door. She looks
to her husband for a moment and gathers herself.
BREDA
They're in the sittin' room...
They're...
BILLY
I know... I'm sorry, the state of
me...
Billy struggles to his feet.
BREDA
Listen to me Billy, after

Billy dissolves into tears. He weeps for his life. Pent up
emotion from the depths of him pours out.
Breda puts her arms around him. She takes hold of his head
and lifts it up to her.
BREDA
I've been avoidin'... There's been
two of us in it.... Don't ye see...
I love you...
Billy pulls his head away. Breda pulls it back to face her.
BREDA (CONT'D)
Say.... Tell... Me...
Billy again tries to pull away. Breda again pulls him back to
face her. They almost wrestle with each other for a moment
before Billy lets go of his resistance. He looks into her
eyes.
BILLY
I... love you.... Have no life
without you.... that's it... that's
just it.
Breda buries her face in his neck.
They look into each other's eyes as if for the first time in
ages they can see each other for who they really are.
Breda envelops him in her arms and pulls him to his feet.
