Objective of The Study

In general, the main objective of this study is to assess the situation of RTAs in Kathmandu
Valley in the last four months with reference to the causes, types of vehicles commonly involved
in the accidents and the trend of death. To be more specific, this study has the objectives to
identify the causes of Road Traffic Accidents, to know the type of vehicles commonly involved
in Road Traffic Accidents and to find out the trend of deaths due to Road Traffic in last 4 months.

Background

Kathmandu is the most populated city in Nepal from the aspect of number of people and
vehicles. Hundreds of thousand vehicles and number of people travelling along the city has been
a major cause of accidents in Kathmandu valley. Motorbikes cars buses and local vehicles are the
major vehicles along the Kathmandu valley. Negligence of drivers, lack of traffic infrastructures
and many problems have directly involved in the accidents in the CAPITAL CITY OF NEPAL.
The important strategic road networks (SRN) in Kathmandu valley has been frequently suffering
from traffic congesting problem. The rapidly growing traffic volume is ultimately beyond the
capacity of the two-lane roads in Kathmandu valley. Government of Nepal has been allotting a
fund in budget head number 48-3/4-503 to widen such an important SRN from two lanes to four
or more lanes in Kathmandu valley. The project "Kathmandu Valley Road Improvement Project
(KVRIP)" has started in September 2007 to work extensively in these SRN. Widening of road
will help in road congestion which ultimately help in reducing the road accident.

Method & Data

We the group had been assigned to collect data in Satdobato the heart of Lalitpur district. This
study is based on the secondary source of data from the report of sub Metropolitan Traffic Office,
Lalitpur. This study is limited to the study of the road accidents of, Satdobato area from
mahalakshmisthan to balkumari (Satdobato BNB Sadak) and Satobato to Godavari roadway.
The RTAs and/or deaths data of the last Five month in terms of time frame and vehicle involved
have been used and analysis has been made in the light of that. The data of the last four months
have been tabulated in terms of the themes given below and analyzed using number and
percentage.

Some of the collection techniques are as follow;

Questionnaires with traffic officers

Senior Inspector Mr. Sitaram Hayatchu was not there at police station due to some cases related
to road accident during our inspection on road traffic data analysis of satdobato area so Constable
Mr. Ramesh Karki helps us for certain queries and provide us a data of last four months
(shrawan, Bhadra, Ashoj, Katrik)
Observing the place and sectors: The most common area of accident in accordance to
Satdobato police station is Satdobato Chowk and Gwarko Chowk. Mr. Karki also name these
places as Black spot.

Conclusion:
We have taken the road crash data from the Satdobato Traffic Police Office and the data is
analyzed. From the data, we have seen that the accident is occurring almost daily. We havent
seen any dead report in the data of 5 months but the pedestrian got injured. The more road
accident is causing vehicles are bike and car. This may cause due to over speeding and using
phone while driving. We have seen the record of accident in zebra crossing also. Zebra crossing
is made to give more priority to the pedestrian but the man who drives the vehicle is not giving
priority to the pedestrian in zebra crossing. The accident may cause due to driving of vehicle by
the unexperienced driver. From the data, we have seen that the accident occurs more in the time
between 6pm and 9pm. This may be due to driving of vehicle by a person who have visibility
problems, head lights may not be working properly. Driving of vehicle by drinking alcohol mostly
done in the night, so the accident in the time 6-9pm might be more due to driving of vehicle by a drunk
people.

Recommendation:
The people should be made aware about the traffic rules and regulation
There should be strict rules against the drinking of alcohol while driving. The present
rules of Nepal against the alcohol consumption greatly help in the reduction of road

accident.
The pedestrian should be suggested to use zebra crossing, sky bridge while crossing road.
There should be strict rules against the over speeding
The driver should use seat belts.
Construction of sky bridge at the intersection
Proper use of traffic signals
There should be provision of footpath for pedestrian
Overloading in vehicle should not be allowed
Widening of road
Greater volume of public vehicle and its use
