stageofappendicitisatthetimeofthediagnosis.
Antibioticagentsareeffectiveindecreasingtherateofpostoperativewoundinfectionandinimproving
outcomeinpatientswithappendicealabscessorsepticemia.TheSurgicalInfectionSociety
recommendsstartingprophylacticantibioticsbeforesurgery,usingappropriatespectrumagentsfor
lessthan24hoursfornonperforatedappendicitisandforlessthan5daysforperforatedappendicitis.
