Part A: Controlled writing (6 points)


I. Combining sentences (2 points) (0.4 point/ each)
Use appropriate punctuations and/or transitional words to combine the following pairs of
simple sentences into:
1. a complex sentence
Watching scary films is foolish. They are shown late at night.

2. a compound sentence
Mammals are the only species that has hair. They are the only one with one bone in the lower
jaw.

3. a simple sentence
Bruno tends to get bored sitting on the beach. He watches the waves, gets sand in his
swimsuit, and reads detective novels for a week.
When Bruno gets bored, he tends to sit on the beach, watches the waves, gets sand in his

4. a sentence beginning with an adverb or prepositional phrase

II. Proofreeding:
Read the following paragraph and do the following tasks ( 4 points):
Instruction: First identify the sentence problem that each sentence of the paragraph may have.
If the sentence has sentence problem, write the number of the sentence and the type of sentence
problem. If the sentence is correct, write the number of the sentence and letter C. There are in
total 10 sentences with sentence problems (fragment, fused sentence, comma splice, misplaced
modifier, dangling modifier). Then correct these 10 identified sentences to become complete
sentences. Be sure to use correct punctuation, transitional words, and grammar.

[ 1] There have been many milestones in the history of food production, the development of
canned food is one of the most important. [2] Because canned goods fill our stores today .

in the 1700s with Lazzaro Spallanzan . his experiments in preserving food were some of the
earliest to succeed. [ 5] Produced by modern factories, other early experimenters preserved

plated iron later, the food is better and safer for our health. [8] Heat kills the bacteria, they

of this process, now called pasteurization, made eating canned food safer the eventual
invention of the can opener made it easier!
