well-earned break but they will
be back in February or March.

There will be so much going on

in the area over Three Kings
starting on 5th January that
we suggest you contact your
local Tourist Office. We have
managed to find out a few
events, but as usual we have
struggled to get information in
advance. Some of the regular
guided walks etc will re-start
next month, but again check at
your local Tourist Office for upto-date information.

We would also like to thank

all of our contributors who
have continued to write some
brilliant and useful articles
each month.

DEAR READERS

First of all we would like to

send our thoughts to those who
were adversely affected by the
recent heavy rains. What an
end to 2016! Once again it
became obvious that there is
an amazing community spirit
here in Spain as friends and
neighbours rallied round to
help those in trouble.

of a give away! Toby has reached many

milestones over the past couple of months,
but he will stay with AAR. All my rescues
are precious and it is hard to say goodbye;
this boy is going nowhere!!

Here at AAR we are hoping for another

successful year, with the continued running
of our two shops and the continued
support of all our friends. If you fancy a
little bit of something to do and meet lots
of lovely people, we are always looking for
volunteers. Only 4 hours a weeks is asked,
though please feel free to offer more if you
wish! Go on, it is only a quick phone call
away to chat with me on 690 906 565.

We had stalls at a couple of Christmas

Fayres in December and I just want to
say a big thank you to all our bakers who
helped us raise in excess of 400. WOW!
The volunteers on both occasions gave up
their Sundays. These sorts of events help
us raise even more money for the upkeep
of all our rescues and we always have lots
of lovely things on display.
I will be on Camposol Car Park B, every
Monday from 11.30am-1.30pm. We will
gratefully receive unwanted clothes, brica-brac, books, household items and I will

be happy to bring you up to date with any

of our rescues. You can drop donations
off at either of our two shops in Roldan or
Mazarrn Town from 10.30am-1.30pm.

Have you made any New Years

resolutions yet?
I dont make resolutions, but I was thinking
today what would I wish to achieve in
2017?
I want to strive to be a better person and
help more people than the previous year.
I am passionate about my faith and do not
want to see anyone going to a lost eternity.
I was brought up in a Christian home and
was taught about the Love of God all my
life. I realise that not everyone was taught
about the love of God, but most people
on Camposol are retired and in the day
I expect most children of our age group
went to Sunday school even if it was to

There seems to be a common theme

developing through my articles at the
moment and after last months article I
had several emails from readers asking
more questions about the Tourist Board
registration process.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Below you will find a summary of the most

frequently asked questions, along with the
answers as they apply at this moment in
time. As with all red tape in Spain, the
process will evolve and in the few weeks
since our first submissions, the paperwork
has already changed once!!
Q. Do the new rules only apply if I rent
my property out through an agent?
A. No, the rules apply even if you rent
yourself through Tripadvisor, Airbnb,
Ownersdirect etc.

let Mum and Dad have some quiet time.

Also the schools years ago always had an
assembly; therefore everyone had some
input to knowing about the love of God.
Of course God gave us freedom of choice,
so you can choose to believe there is a God
and a heaven and hell, or choose not to
believe.
In the bible it tells us in the chapter of John
verse 16. For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not
perish but have eternal life.
What a wonderful gift to give to the whole
world; Gods only Son Jesus Christ.

Q. Can I register myself?

A. If you speak good Spanish and can
find your way around the Government
websites and deal with the authorities
in Spanish YES, or you can use an
Asessor or Rental Agent to do this for
you.
Q. Why cant my current property
manager do this for me?
A. Your property manager has to be legally
registered to work here in Spain, either
as a company with a CIF number,
or Autonomous (self employed) and
registered with the tax authorities. In
both these cases, your Rental Agent
can register both themselves AND
the properties they manage with the
Consejera de Turismo.
As in any
business sector, there are a lot of
unofficial rental companies operating
out there and they will not be able to

We wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New

Year.
How about a New Years resolution to
find out more about this Son, Jesus
Christ.
You will be assured of a good welcome at
the Olive Branch Fellowship. We meet
every Sunday morning at 10.30am at
the Cultural Centre on Camposol B. We
are registered with the Free Methodist
Organisation and have charity status.
For more information you can contact
Pastor Ralph and Margaret Locke on 968
199 622 or mobile 618 720 181

register as they are not working legally

here in Spain.
Q. What happens if I dont register but
continue to rent my property?
A. As an agent, I can be fined for
marketing
properties
which
have
not been registered, so I now ONLY
have properties on my site that are
currently going through the registration
process. When they have a valid ID
Licence number, this will be displayed
on the OwnersAway site PLUS any
adverts on other marketing portals
we use. In November, Barcelona
Council announced that for the second
time it has issued fines to Airbnb and
HomeAway, this time for 600,000 each
for advertising unlicensed properties on
their websites. As repeat offenders,
this time the maximum fine has been
imposed as the volume of unregistered
properties (3812 for Airbnb and 1744
for HomeAway) means that these two
companies generate substantial income
as market leaders in the direct booking
sector.
If you rent your property out privately,
then you, as the owner of the
property, risk being fined.
Q. If
Ownersaway
register
my
property, do I have to rent it out
through you?
A. No, we can help you through the
registration process for a small fee and
you are then free to market your home
through whichever websites you want.
Please feel free to continue sending in your
questions and concerns and I will answer
as many as possible via the column or by
email.
If you would like us to register your property
for you, and arrange the inspection, then
please get in touch on info@ownersaway.

Los Reyes Golf Society Fund Raising

Following our Open Day fund raising,
we promised we would keep everyone
up to date on how the money has been
actually distributed. It is important that our
sponsors and donors can see how their
donations actually get to the workface
where it is truly needed.
We reported in previous editions on how
we have helped:The parents of Eva in Lorca with 1,000
towards her treatment in the USA.
Anne, the birthday present pensioner with
500 towards the childrens shoes and
jumpers.
The Diabetes Camp where we sponsored 4

A New Year is beginning, so I thought I
would take this opportunity to remind
everyone of the role Forget Me Not plays
in the community.
Basically, Forget Me Not offers carers
an opportunity to have a break from their
24/7 caring responsibilities and take time
for themselves for a few hours. Caring for

your normal family shopping outing, but a
van load of babies nappies and baby wet
wipes. The MAD group work in collaboration
with the Mazarrn Social Services Dept to
help more than 60 families in and around
our area. These voluntary workers do
such a great job and Los Reyes are very
pleased to be able to help them in their
quest of looking after the babies and needy
children.

We were also delighted to attend an

Anniversary Celebration Afternoon with
the Aspedem School; this in itself a fund
raising event to mark 23 years since the
association was formed. A number of Los
Reyes members along with their wives
went along and we were delighted to be
presented with a Thank You Certificate

for our 2,000 donation. The certificate

illness or condition, or coming to terms with

living with dementia can be a very tiring,
frustrating and often lonely experience.
Many carers choose to stay at the centre
relaxing in the company of others in
the same position as themselves. This
genuinely helps to relieve the sense of
isolation that many feel. Every Monday
morning trained nurses and volunteers
take over this responsibility. In a cheerful
and friendly atmosphere Forget Me Not

dust off some memories and skills that
may not have been
used for a while;

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Chinese New
Years Day is
the first day
of the Chinese
lunar calendar.
This year it is
on Saturday,
January 28th.
It
is
always
b e t w e e n
January 21st and
February 20th.
Tr a d i t i o n a l l y
New Year activities may start as early as
three weeks before Chinese New Years Eve,
but a week before is more usual.

Roosters are a little sensitive and they feel

stressed and moody at times.
People born in a Year of the Rooster will
need to manage their finances carefully and
cautiously, or they will suffer unexpected
financial losses. They should not get involved
with dirty money and they should not borrow
any money.
Roosters are more motivated than other
animals in the Chinese zodiac, making their
careers a priority. They are hard-working,
multi-talented and can deal with a variety
of jobs. Good careers for Roosters are
newsreader, sales person, restaurant owner,
hairdresser, public relations officer, farmer,
athlete, teacher, waiter, journalist, travel
writer, dentist, surgeon, soldier, fireman,
security guard and police officer.

It is considered a bad year for Roosters if

they are born in a Rooster year.
According to Chinese tradition, there are
some things that people can do to fend off
bad luck in a zodiac year:
Wear Red
Red is one of the luckiest colours in Chinese
culture, standing for prosperity, loyalty,
success, and happiness. Red can drive away
bad luck and evil spirits. Wearing a red belt,
red socks, red shoes, or red clothes and red
underwear is highly recommended during
your zodiac year. However, there is a rule
that you need to pay attention to, or the red
wont ward off bad luck; you cannot buy,
for example, the red underwear yourself.
It should be bought by a spouse, family
member, or friend.

Wear Jade Accessories

Besides wearing red, you can also wear jade
accessories during your zodiac year to ward
off bad luck. These include items such as
pendants, earrings, rings and bracelets.

Face the Right Direction

People are often told by fortune-tellers that
Tai Sui will bring bad luck. Actually in theory
you can make use of Tai Sui to bring good
luck, by facing the opposite direction.

16

People born in a year of the Rooster are

very observant, hardworking, resourceful,
courageous and talented. They are also very
confident about themselves. Roosters are
always active, amusing and popular. They are
talkative, outspoken, frank, open, honest and
loyal individuals, but they like to be the centre
of attention and always appear attractive and
beautiful. Roosters are happiest when they
are surrounded by others, whether at a party
or just a social gathering. They enjoy the
spotlight and will exhibit their charm at any
occasion. Roosters expect others to listen
to them while they speak and can become
agitated if they are ignored. Vain and boastful,
Roosters like to brag about themselves and
their accomplishments. Their continually
seeking the unwavering attention of others
annoys people around them at times.
Roosters are typically healthy people. They
are active and enjoy sports such as hiking
and swimming and dont get sick very often
because they tend to fight illness well. Even
when they do become ill, they feel better
quickly. They should pay special attention
to the health of senior family members
and kids. In the sixth and seventh Chinese
lunar months, they should protect the kids.

Roosters are loyal and they make devoted

friends. They always keep their promises and
are always true to their word.
Roosters will have varied relationships in this
Monkey Year. They will need to manage them
carefully and should not act on impulse. They
should spend more time and energy on their
career. In the third, fourth, tenth Chinese
lunar months, they will encounter disruptions
within their relationships and conflicts with
their friends.
Roosters are best with an Ox or Snake and
worse with a Rat, Rabbit, Horse, or Pig
Wood Rooster 1945 & 2005 energetic,
over-confident, tender and unstable.
Fire Rooster 1957 & 2017 trustworthy
with a strong sense of timekeeping and
responsibility at work.
Earth Rooster 1909 & 1969 Lovely,
generous, trustworthy and popular with
friends.
Gold Rooster 1921 & 1981 Determined,
brave, perseverant and hard working.
Water Rooster 1933 & 1993 Smart, quickwitted, tender-hearted and compassionate.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Today, Alhama de Murcia appears a

prosperous town which you pass on
the Autova del Mediterrneo or on the
railway line from Lorca to Murcia, with the
extremely large El Pozo meat processing
factory a major landmark. Its modern
name is said to come from the Arabic alHamma, which means a thermal bath,
for reasons which will be clear shortly.
In population terms, Alhama has seen
fairly constant if slow growth over the last
century or so, from about 8500 inhabitants
in 1900 to just over 20, 000 in 2010. In
2015, official statistics gave a population
of 21,351 about 70% of the figure of
neighbouring Totana, though the areas of
the two municipalities are very similar.

reached a high level of development on

Castle Hill by the 5th and 4th Centuries
BC. It was, of course, not long after
that the Romans arrived. Alhama was
particularly favoured in Roman times
because of the medicinal springs
which allowed thermal baths to be
built. These are generally regarded as
being the municipalitys most important
archaeological remains and they are of
national and not just local importance.
This is quite clear from the marvellous
Archaeological Centre, inaugurated in mid2005, which has been built over them and
which now is a fascinating museum to
which any visitor to Alhama really ought
to go and spend some time.

For Alhama, the first known settlements

were in the Neolithic period (third
millennium BC) with various archaeological
finds made including pottery fragments
and stone axes. Defensive sites on hills,
but with access to water, were often
favoured at this time, including the hill on
which the castle was subsequently built.
It appears that, from the 8th Century BC,
major developments took place as the
native Argaric and Late Bronze Age settlers
came into contact with Phoenician traders
and a true Iberic culture is regarded as
having developed. This is said to have

The Roman Baths were constructed in the

1st Century AD and appear certainly to
have continued in use until the beginning
of the 4th Century, when it is suggested
that they were largely abandoned except
for the medicinal rooms as crisis enveloped
the Roman Empire, but during the
intervening period, they would have been
very important indeed to the inhabitants
of the area. As well as for massages and
exercising, people would go to meet others
and talk. Use was encouraged by generally
low prices (if not free use) and all levels of
society would be found there. For some

20

www.costacalidachronicle.com

time men and women shared the facilities,

though at different hours, but following a
decree by the Emperor Hadrian, separate
facilities had to be used by the two sexes.
Although the baths are generally referred
to as Roman Baths, it is important to
realize that their history of use stretches
over some 2,000 years. Thus, the fall of
the Roman Empire was not the end of the
baths. As one description states, for the
Moors, the baths were an essential feature,
combining a religious character (they were
often constructed next to the mosque) with
social and hygienic functions. In particular,
the domed areas that dated from Roman
times were used and improved by the
Moors and it is in this area, to which you
descend from the Roman remains above,
that you can regard yourself as being in a
medieval Moorish setting. Other parts of
the Roman area appear to have been used
as a cemetery, with corpses facing Mecca
found during excavations.

Not surprisingly, abundant Roman

remains have been found throughout
the area, including villas. Indeed, a
watch tower is believed to have been built
at this time to control passage through
the Guadalentn Valley. The site was
subsequently used by the Moors following
their invasion of Spain in the 8th Century,

Costa Clida Chronicle Sales 619 199 407

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Although the years after the Christian

takeover were not entirely straightforward
with, for example, a falling out between
the Castilians and Aragonese (the two
kingdoms which were united in 1479 by
the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabel,
the Catholic Monarchs under whom the
Moors were finally overcome in 1492),
Christian resettlement of the area was
encouraged.
From 1370, the Fajardo
family (the Marqueses de los Vlez)
was entrusted with the control of the
castle and surrounding area which they
exploited ruthlessly to the extent that local
inhabitants sought redress and recognition
of their rights through a legal process
that occupied the whole of the second

half of the 16th Century. The true nature

of Alhamas development over these
years, however, is not altogether clear.
There are various references believed to
relate to Alhama in Arab writings from
the mid-11th Century and there may have
been the beginnings of a settlement below
the castle, but it is said that Christian
documents of the 14th and 15th Centuries
reflect a lack of population in the area in a
period of economic and political difficulty,
while, in 1494, a German traveller noted
that, as well as a castle and thermal baths,
Alhama had some 30 houses. Thereafter,
one interesting event at the beginning of
the 18th Century (which, more generally,
was a century of economic progress for the
town), saw Alhamas inhabitants going
to the aid of Cartagena when it was
menaced by British and Dutch forces!
Although Alhama was not immune from
some of the economic forces which led to
emigration, by the end of the 19th Century
the population of the municipal area as a
whole was approaching 10,000 with threequarters living in the town itself. The
thermal baths, enjoying a renaissance,
were one of the economic motors at the
time with the railway coming in 1885 and
the first street lights in 1904. From the
Middle Ages, it appears that the baths
had continued in a semi-abandoned state.

to-do merchants, came to the baths from

such places as Murcia, Almeria, Alicante,
Madrid, Cadiz and Valencia. In the late
19th Century, it is said that you could leave
Madrid at 20.15 in the evening, arriving
at Alcantarilla at 07.55 to take the Lorca
train and arrive at Alhama at 09.56 with
carriages waiting to take you to the hotel
and baths. These prosperous times did
not last and the baths closed in the 1930s.
Then, in the 1940s, the buildings served
as a hospital for the wounded from the
Spanish Civil War, being completely
abandoned later in the decade and the
hotel was finally demolished in 1972.
Excavation, restoration and the building
of the fine modern Archaeological Centre

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

What a year 2016 was! The past twelve

months have put us through the wringer,
with a whole host of our best-loved actors,
comedians, sportsmen and musicians waving
goodbye - some tragically before their time.
The unexpected death of legendary pop icon
David Bowie back in January was arguably
the biggest shock of all, causing a national
outpouring of grief and the realisation that
things would never be the same again.

our cultural life like Brixton-born David Jones.
He died surrounded by his family following an
18-month battle with cancer, aged 69.
Terry Wogan
Voice of Eurovision, face of Children in Need
and all round broadcasting legend Sir Terry

The discussion, led by our member Martine
Smets, was around her choice of topic
Who wants to live eternally? and was
prompted by a book she has recently
read. The central idea of the book, entitled
The Possibility Of An Island by Michel
Houellbecq which is set in the future and
members of a particular sect were enabled
to be cloned and thus live on into the
future.
With these ideas as a starting point, we
were posed the question, Would you like
to live for ever?
The position of religions in relation to
eternal life was also raised. Despite the
promise of paradise by religions, none of
them spell out what paradise would be
like, as opposed to hell, which is described
in some detail.
After a lively discussion around these
ideas, the consensus was that we
didnt want to live eternally. True to our
humanist principles we concluded that we
are content to expect that our physical
bodies and our life energy will, on our
deaths, return to the universe.

Ably led by Audrey, we took the left hand

route up the rambla, then took the left hand

thinking; new habits; new ways of tackling

our problems and difficulties.
We develop new friendships and walk in
new hope and because Gods mercies are
new every morning, we can continue to
walk in this newness and freshness every
day of our lives.

Games Evening
The November games evening was
hosted by John and Rhian at their home
in La Majada, as our usual venue was not
available. Their ample refreshments were
supplemented by more delicious cake and
cava supplied by members, so the evening
went off with a good start.
Perennial favourites, Mexican train and
Rumikub were once again very popular.
John bravely undertook to introduce
additional card games, which some of us
were new to.
If you would like to join us for some
innocent fun and possibly cake, you are
very welcome. As we are not sure about
the venue at present, please feel free to
phone 669 338 885 for more information.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Hi Shirley here
I hope you all had a good Christmas and
have a Happy New Year. As the saying
goes, in the New Year its out with the old
and in with the new and this year we have
a few changes:
Im giving up writing the article and someone else will be taking over.
Les, after many years, is giving up running
the Petanca and Mike and Marilyn are
taking over. Thanks to Les for all his hard
work.
The biggest change of all is that Rosemary
and Haydn are leaving us and returning to
Wales. We will miss them and wish them
all the happiness for the future. Steve (The
Snip) and Wass are taking over and they
have a hard act to follow, but we hope
everything goes well for them.
At the last meeting Welcome presented the
MAD charity with all the sweets that had
been collected. There were a couple of
bags full, so there should be a few smiling
faces this Christmas.

The Trip to Madrid was quite eventful as
the weather decided it was in charge. They
had everything from sunshine to snow. The
shopping went very well; plenty of full bags

snow put in an appearance! Not everyone
was prepared and didnt have their coats

A brilliant night was had by all at the HAH
Annual Christmas Dinner Dance held at
the 525 Hotel in Los Alcazares. 225 guests

Dear Editor
New Year, New Plans!
Firstly, a Very Happy New Year to all the
regular readers of my columns and all clients
old and new! I hope that Papa Noel was good
to you all and wish you all the best for 2017.
This year looks like being an exciting year for
us here at OwnersAway and in the coming
months I will have more news for you on
how the business is being restructured to
offer a slightly different range of services for
our clients, but for the time being it is all a
bit hush-hush.
I will be announcing all the changes and the
new range of services via the Costa Clida
Chronicle, so watch this space. I hope to
have plans confirmed this month so that
I can share our news with you in the next
edition, as the website for the new module of
the business is currently under construction.

Its an exciting and very busy time for me,

as this will be my 11th year running the
business, which has gone from strength to
strength and grown year on year beyond
my wildest dreams since the day a friend in

Many

you

I am out and

I am really looking forward to 2017 and I

hope that you are all feeling the same level
of optimism for the future that I do, but

Dear Editor
I have just got to write to you to say what
fantastic Steak and Kidney Puddings
Elliots in Bolnuevo make!
Having seen that Elliots won the coveted
Pudding Award once again, I thought that
we should really give them a try as they
are one of my husbands favourite meals
and I just do not have the time to make
them. I asked if they could supply me with
some individual puddings so that we could
cook them at home. I chose to have them
uncooked so that I could freeze them and
use them at our convenience. What a super
meal they made and they were packed with
superbly tender meat. I will certainly be
buying them again from Elliots.

This is the tax form called 720, introduced by

the Spanish Tax Office concerning fraud and
money laundering and it must be completed
by all Tax Residents in Spain. All below
mentioned assets held as of the 31.12.2016
with a value of more than 50,000 must be
submitted on this form before 31st March
2017:

Properties and property rights owned in any

other country.
Shares, rights, life insurances and incomes
deposited, handled or obtained abroad.

Accounts in foreign banks - balance at 31st

December 2016 and average balance in the
last quarter.

In addition, non-declared assets might be

considered by the Tax Office, as Capital
Gains. This means that tax evaders would
have to include it on the 2017 Income Tax
Return, being taxed as a capital gains, plus
an additional penalty up to 150% over the
total taxable amount.

Tax evaders will incur a penalty of 5K for

every asset not declared after the deadline
with a minimum penalty of 10,000.

This is an extraordinary tax return and it

wont have to be completed again unless
you subsequently acquire additional assets
abroad with a value in excess of 20K.
Although this will apply to Spanish citizens
and expats, foreigners are more likely to
have offshore assets.
Tax returns will be only accepted through
online submission, therefore an electronic

required to submit the tax forms.

It can get complicated when you start

thinking about it. I mean is it inside out or
outside in? Back to front or front to back?
I am sure it doesnt matter a great deal,
but these statements imply that things
are not as they should be.
In the World around us things are not as
they should be is becoming the norm,
but it seems there is very little we can
do about it. From bankers bonuses to
zero hour contracts and Trump, historic
child abuse among football professionals,
nonsense laws and petty savings and
Trump again, the global economy mess
which it seems is beyond anyones ability
to sort and did I mention Trump..... I
mean really?
Okay count to ten, deep breath and relax.
Way back when the nation of Israel was
set free from Egypt, Gods intention was
to bring them out of Egypt in order for
them to be brought into the Promised
Land.
Moses says in Deuteronomy 6 v 23
... He brought us out from there in
order to bring us in, to give us the land
he promised on oath to our ancestors.
Unfortunately, things are not as they
should be applied here too and fear and
distrust prevented the male adults from
going into the Promised Land. They were
brought out, but they were not brought
in.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Bringing this up-to-date, Jesus died to

bring us out of our slavery and captivity,
which is separation from God and to bring
us into the Promised Land, which is a
right relationship with Him and more. For
many people, though things are not as
they should be perhaps through fear and
distrust again.
Jesus sacrifice has provided the way out
and the way in. Dont go another day
when things are not as they should be.
You can find us on Condado de Alhama in

Come and join us. We offer something a

A very Happy New Year to all and many

thanks to all those who supported Green
Fingers during 2016: our Committee,
all the Volunteers, local businesses and
homeowners, including everyone who
donated plants, raffle prizes and to our
bucket!

Please Support Your Fiesta Team

in your area please contact us and please

give any plants near your home or holiday
home a drink if needed, as the cold winter
winds can quickly dry them out.

During 2017 we will be replacing trees and

shrubs which have not survived during
the extreme heat of last Summer, despite
watering. Completing the renovation of
borders along the Pig Farm perimeter road
with new plants and gravel will begin when
the farmer has re-sited the collapsing
fence. If you would like a task completed

We have also said good-bye to Bernard

Holland and his wife, Norma, who returned
to England in December to commence
yet another retirement: Bernard started
Green Fingers and was Chairman for the
first 3 years. Without his hard work and
perseverance there would be no gardening
group on Sector C. Those were the days of
no money and bringing our own tools! We
all owe them both a huge debt of gratitude
and wish them a very happy future.

Thanks must also go to all who helped with

our fantastic Christmas Party at The Club
House - Santa was present, of course, with
little gifts for everyone - thanks Bas! The
food was first class and so was the vocalist,
Cassi Kennedy, who entertained us despite
suffering a dreadful accident earlier that
week. What a trooper! She was even joined
for an amazing (and a little frightening!)
finale of Fairy Tale of New York by our
own John Osborne - unfortunately no video
records of this exist; a travesty!
Another year has passed with Green
Fingers working their magic throughout
C North with the Maintenance Team
working every Monday despite the extreme
weather, clearing, weeding and spraying
every street in rotation and the Wednesday
Volunteers who have been clearing more
mud and debris. They then built a new,
larger flood relief pipe to join the others
at the bottom of the dual carriageway. Yet
more palms have been trimmed, pot holes
repaired and more donated large rocks resited.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

What a busy few weeks it has been at

Ladies Chatterbox!
Our trip to Benidorm in November was
enjoyed by all.
The Hotel Melia was
splendid and we all agreed that the Palaces
new Icon show was the best yet.

there were plenty of bargains found.

Christmas started in earnest with our lunch
at Casa Nono in Isla Plana. The food was
excellent, the atmosphere was festive
and the waiters were attentive and very
tolerant.

from Lisa of the Yoga Shala Community,
who will talk to us about her work.
Our first Ladies Lunch of the year is on
Wednesday 18th January at the Montemar
Restaurant in Isla Plana. Places can be
booked at the January meeting or via our

Looking ahead we have a Fashion Show,

trips in store. Make a New Years resolution
to come and meet us and find out more

The serious business of Christmas shopping

The dark evenings have arrived along with

the rain. The first few weeks in December
were quite unsettled, but hopefully things
will be looking up soon. It will not be long
now and the days will begin to get longer
and the temperature will rise. Well thats
the weather done! Well I am English and
still obsessed by the weather.

carefully following the strict guidelines laid

down by our regulating authority.

As always the FAST2016 team have been

very active during the festive period. The
responders had a break over Christmas for
a few days, so no cover was available from
24th to 27th and again from New Years Eve
until 2nd January. If the FAST2016 number
was called during these times there was a
message giving information on the phone.
The emergency services was available on
112 as normal.

There are Spanish lessons presented by

Mandy for Responders, giving them a basic
knowledge to be able to communicate
with the Paramedics when they arrive.
We also have guest speakers who pass on
information. These speakers include Colin A
Thackwell from Age Concern, Tony Smith
the English Funeral Director and Derek
Harding from FAST2016.
The vehicles have to be checked each week
by responsible people who ensure the
vehicles are safe. The documents have to
be in order, including motor insurance and
road tax. The cars can be driven by at least
20 different people in a month.

The emergency phones have to be topped

up when the credit is low and if there is a
problem with the phones there is someone
who will sort that out.

The Facebook page is also updated by two

administrators.

The trauma bags, two in each car, have
to be checked each Tuesday to ensure
the correct equipment is in each bag and
working correctly. Equipment and supplies
have to be ordered when the stocks are
getting low.
Many thanks to:
The fundraisers/supporters who make cakes
to sell or raffle.
The FAST nurses who stand on the dual
carriageway shaking their buckets for your
loose change or loose notes. (It is only with
the generosity of the people of Camposol
that we are able to provide this service.)

The coach trips are organised by Mandy

who is also a Trainer and Responder. There
have been trips to Benidorm and a shopping
extravaganza to La Zenia and Liquor 43.
The trip to Aguilas to see the carnival is on
4th March. Tickets available at the bookstall
outside TJ Electricals, Camposol B on 2nd
and last Friday each month.

The new FAST2016 website will soon be up

and running. This will have lots of useful
information on it.

The Trainers/Instructors organise the

training sessions on a Tuesday morning,

Fridays.

In November there were 18 call outs

resulting in 15 ambulances attending. Some
call outs result in the responders giving first
aid or maybe just advice; normally the
advice will be to see their own doctor if an
ambulance is not required.
People on Camposol will see the two
FAST2016 vehicles driving about on the
urbanisation, but behind the scenes there
is an awful lot of work going on to provide
this service:

for
more responders to help with this great
organisation, so if you would like to be part

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

The drawn-out Spanish working day may

be about to change now that employment
minister Ftima Bez has announced that
MPs should clock off at 6pm to set an
example and that she wants the rest of the
workforce to be able to do so in order to
bring it in line with Europe.

a short post-meal nap and very few even

bother and relax for a while before going
back for the 3 hour afternoon shift. These
days, the majority of employees do not
live near enough to work to justify going
home, meaning commuters are stuck in a
different town for hours with nothing to do.

The Spanish day has always started

anywhere between 8am and 9.30am
and finishing between 8pm and 9.30pm.
Typically, a breakfast break of up to 45
minutes is taken at around 11am, with all
staff leaving en-masse to go to a bar for
coffee and croissants, then the long lunch
hour can be anything from 2 hours (usually
2pm-4pm) to 4 hours (1pm-5.30pm).
This means that although Spaniards are
not actually working a 12-hour day, they
are on the go for this long and, with
commuting where applicable, can mean
14 hours a day spent away from home five
days a week and in most sectors, Saturday
mornings, typically until 1pm or 2.30pm
are a normal part of the working week.

As their work premises will be shut for

the long lunch, bringing a packed lunch
to heat up in the office microwave is not
normally feasible, so they have to spend
a good chunk of their salaries on eating
in restaurants five days a week. They also
have to find some way of filling the next
three or four hours with nowhere to go as
shops are shut. In smaller towns, even
bars shut during this period.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Despite these hours, numerous studies over

decades have shown Spain is one of the
least-productive countries in the western
world, leading to an unfair stereotype of its
workers being lazy and needing to sleep
all afternoon, something which employees
sorely resent as they practically never
see the inside of their homes in waking
hours except on Saturday afternoons and
Sundays.
Four Hours In Town, Everything Shut
And Nothing To Do
For those who live close enough to work
to go home for lunch, the long middleof-the-day break means they can cook
a hot meal, settle down to enjoy it and
chat with their family, take the standard
20-minute siesta afterwards contrary
to popular stereotypes, the siesta is only

40

This is hardly conducive to the kind of

quality time or relaxation to set them up
for another 3-4 hours work in the evening
and, getting home at 9pm or 10pm, they
would not have time for their daily hot meal
after work as they would go to bed on a full
stomach, meaning they have to somehow
arrange to eat it in the middle of the day.
No Home Life
Public sector and bank workers, including
many medical staff, typically work 8am3pm and attend to customers until 1pm
or 2pm, with the same breakfast break
of 30-45 minutes as the private sector
effectively, a full working day, but with
members of the public having to rush to
see them in the mornings.
All this means that, whilst Spaniards are
only actually on the job and paid for the
standard 7-8 hours, their days are very
long and they are unproductive simply
because they are tired and have no home
life.
Shops staying open until 8.30pm can be a
real bonus, although the downside is the

long shut-down in the middle of the day.

Workers hardly see their children and where
both work, it is usually the grandparents
who do the school runs.
Parents cannot oversee their kids doing
their homework or become involved with
their schooling.
They cannot take evening classes or go
to after-work sports, or leisure classes as
these tend to start at 8pm or 9pm and
prime-time TV programmes, including
League football matches, start at around
10pm or 11pm.
The average Spaniard, with or without the
20 minute post-lunch siesta, barely gets
seven hours sleep a day.
Spains working hours have barely been
questioned by employees since anyone
below retirement age has never known
anything different. Some say they would
not want to change their hours, as they
would miss their leisurely lunch, but these
are mainly the workers able to go home
for that time and they have not factored
in the advantages of getting home earlier
in the evening and having five or six hours
of family time and leisurely evening meals.
Spain Needs 21st-Century Office Hours
Spains working hours are based on the
Franco era when two-thirds of the active
population, in what was then practically a
third-world country, were in the agricultural
industry. Now, a modern, forward-looking
European Union nation in which, outside
the tourism belts where the catering sector
is the main job provider, the majority work
in retail or in offices, Spain needs 21stcentury hours which fit in better with the
rest of Europe.
Back to GMT After 74 Years?
The proposed working hours amendment
may come hand in hand with a move to
put Spain back onto GMT, as it was before
World War II when General Franco shifted
the country an hour forward to align with
his allies in Germany and Italy.
Some experts are against putting the
mainland and Balearic Islands onto GMT
(and BST in summer), saying Spain has got
used to its eternal jet-lag after 74 years,
that the key is to adjust the daily grind to
fit in with natural time and all it would
achieve would be that it gets dark earlier.
Most of mainland Spain is in the western
half of the GMT zone: the Greenwich
Meridian line runs through the villages of
Pego and El Verger, in northern Alicante
province. Getting dark earlier may sound
gloomy, but the IESE Business School
says it would encourage an earlier finish
to the working day and make employees
more inclined to go to bed earlier, giving
them more sleep and, with both factors
combined, making Spain more productive
but with three times as much leisure time

How we raise money

We sell your unwanted items, so anything
no longer needed we welcome in our large
superstore. We can take a single item to
a house clearance and sell clothes, bric-abrac and working electrical items, so dont
throw anything away! Please drop it off at
the shop, where you can have a browse
and hopefully buy something - weve got
something for everyone from a bed to a
pair of rollerblades!!! You can also drop
your items off to Richard (looks like a young
Richard Gere - in his dreams!!) who waits
patiently every Tuesday 10am-12pm on
Camposol B car park. For larger items email
us or call 666 186 037 so that we can
arrange to collect from you.
Volunteer Alert
It looks like we might have two new
volunteers - hip hooray!! We are always
looking for volunteers. The store is so big
it takes quite a bit of work; in particular we
would love some hunky blokes to help with
the furniture (well us ladies would - not sure
about Richard and Leo!!!!). Please consider
giving us a couple of hours. Were a jolly
bunch and we like tea and biscuits!!!
Location
Our shop is in Puerto de Mazarrn just
past the Mercadona/Lidl shopping centre
towards the port. Turn left immediately
below Consum and drive up that road. The
shop is in Calle San Juan, the third turning
on the left.
Please contact us if you need help on 666

Green Lines to Reduce Speed

Serving as a trial before potentially being
implemented across the country, Castilla y
Len will be one of the first places in Spain
to paint green lines along the edge of the
road. Having already been tested in parts
of Sweden and the Netherlands, it has been
proven that by using different colours on the
road, drivers give a special impression of the
road and, in particular, induces drivers to
moderate their speed accordingly, slowing
down as the road appears to narrow.
Although it is believed that no explanation
is necessary, the roads will also have
informative signs indicating that the roads
are of a special format and that they may
be subject to intensified speed checks and
controls.
Traffic Jams Cost Over 140 Million Euro
According to the annual report published
by navigation company TomTom, traffic in
Madrid has risen by around about 23%,
which has led to an increase in traffic jams
and the delays caused by them.
In Madrid, every motorist loses 25 minutes
of time each day and each of the 538,591
commercial vehicles on the road are losing
an additional 1.41 per day. Collectively
and based on the minimum wage, the loss
is estimated at over 141 million euro.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Barcelona is in top-spot, with Alicante in

fifteenth place, just behind Murcia.
The worst times to travel on Spanish roads
are between 8am and 9am on Tuesdays and
between 3pm and 4pm on a Friday, where
traffic increases by up to 50%. In Alicante
however, Monday morning between 8am
and 9am is the worst time, where traffic
increases by 30%, and there is a 21%
increase everyday between 6pm and 7pm.

Mobility
Scooters
Banned
from
Pavements
The DGT intends to enforce a control on
small motorised vehicles on pedestrian
areas and pavements, which, although
intended to reduce the risk to pedestrians
from collisions with such vehicles as
segways, it also effectively bans mobility
scooters which must only be used on the
road, although local authorities can issue
an ordinance which authorises the use of
these vehicles on pavements, and so each
municipality would have to ensure that they
issue local rules to permit their use.
Mobility scooters are needed to provide the
means to travel around towns and cities
and so restricting the free movement of
the disabled would not be an option easily
enforced. The people in control of these
vehicles do not need to hold a licence and
insurance is not mandatory, although it is
optional and recommended.
People Investigated For Insurance
Fraud
Officers from the Economic and Tax Crime
investigation unit of the National Police,
UDEF, in Murcia are investigating more than
100 people for fraudulent activities related
to vehicle insurance.
Amongst those under investigation are
supposed victims of road traffic incidents,
as well as lawyers and doctors, most of
whom are trauma specialists, with links to
another criminal gang which was disbanded
in 2014 after they falsified claims for around
400 incidents. The officers discovered an
extensive network of activity specifically
aimed at defrauding insurance companies
through false and exaggerated claims
following incidents, and others which were
intentionally caused.
Time to Check your Battery
One of the biggest causes of breakdowns is
a fault to do with the cars electrical system
or the battery.
Often, the problem is age-related and the
fact that the battery has simply discharged.
This is a common consequence of high
temperatures during the summer months.
The advice is to thoroughly check your
vehicle on a regular basis, keep electrical
use to a minimum when the engine isnt
running and, above all, have your vehicle
checked by a qualified mechanic on a
regular basis.
Child Seats and Children in Cars
Recent changes to the laws in Spain state
that children measuring 135cm in height or
less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle
irrespective of their age and must sit in the
correct and approved seat appropriate to
their size and weight.

under 14 years of age and tragically, 40%

of those children who lost their lives wore
no protection system.
The seats which meet the minimum required
standards carry an orange label, usually
located at the rear, which guarantees that
the seat has undergone a series of tests to
prove safety and reliability.
The approval system is based on a European
standard and EU regulation ECE-R44.03,
which also ensures certain information is
listed on the label.
Classification of Child Restraint Seats
Group 0
This category includes the baby from birth
to 1 year. It can be used for children up
to 10kg. There are two elements that
are typically used; either a bassinet with
harnesses located in the rear seats and
which engages the seat belt, or a child
safety seat slightly tilted that may be placed
in the front seat in the opposite direction of
travel, or at the rear, placed in the centre so
as to minimize possible damage in the event
of a side collision. If placed in the front,
you must ensure that the airbag device for
the passenger seat is disconnected. It is
therefore safest to place it in the back seat
in the opposite direction of travel.
Group 0+
This is for up to 13kg and for children up to
18 months. The chair normally sits on the
back seats in the opposite direction of travel
so as to better protect against any collision.
Placing the chair in this way further protects
the neck and spine.
Group I
Children weighing between 9kg and 18kg
and approximately 1-4 years. The chairs
are hooked in the seat belt of the vehicle.
They are always located facing the direction
of travel, using the fitted vehicle seat belt or
an extension on the chair itself. The latter
incorporate a harness of 4 or 5 points of
anchorage.
Group II
For children 3-6 years, which with a weight
between 15kg and 25kg. It consists of or
booster cushion with backrest provided with
lateral protection for the head and is fitted
at the rear in the direction of travel and, if
possible, in the centre. You should include
lateral guides to position the belt tight at
the hips, avoiding injuries in the abdominal
cavity or column.
Group III
For children 5-12 years, weighing between
22kg and 36kg. It is a booster cushion,
possibly backed with side and head
protection and height adjustment, so as to
allow the vehicle seat belt to fit firmly over
the childs collarbone.
Before purchasing a child seat, check
your vehicle manual for instructions on
how to secure the seat and to ensure it is
compatible.

The use of child restraint systems reduces

injuries by up to 75% in the event of a
collision. Road traffic incidents are the
leading cause of death amongst children

Fighting For A No Kill Policy In Murcia

Since 2007, the owners of Los Infiernos
Perrera have promoted a no kill policy with
local authorities. To date, Pilar de la Horadada
is the only local authority to actually
implement a no kill policy. Other authorities
that have contracted Los Infiernos Perrera
to take in their stray dogs, do not have such
a policy, but owners, Antonio Aguilar and his
wife, Carmen, with the help of the charities
Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters (LIPS)
and Caminando con Ellos, have operated a
no kill policy of their own. Working together,
they have saved hundreds of dogs lives and
found them loving homes.

This year alone, 223 dogs have been rehomed

by LIPS/Caminando con Ellos, but the dogs
just keep coming and they are always full to
bursting point. Some of the dogs have been
there for many years, fed and cared for, in
the hope that they will find a home soon. The
volunteers work hard to raise funds to ensure
that the dogs are always fed, are healthy
and are walked a few times a week, but all
of this takes a lot of money and dedication.
What they need is regular donations and
more volunteers to help. If you would like to
donate or get involved, please email Karen

MacDonald at losinfiernosdogs@hotmail.
com or call her on 633 357 309
In the meantime,

with

Perrera
and
ensure that stray

Antonio Aguilar had secured contracts with

Pilar de la Horadada, San Pedro del Pinatar,
Los Alczares, Torre Pacheco, Mazarrn and,
more recently, Guardamar to ensure that all

dogs sent to him

would not be put

San Pedro del

their

a

Mazarrn,
run

there
will
be
put to sleep within a short period of time if
not claimed by their owners. This is all so
that the local authorities can save a paltry
2,600 a year on costs. The only reason that
the Esprineco SL contract comes in slightly
cheaper is because they dont keep the dogs
for very long.

Bank Of Spain Predictions

Forecasts from the Bank of Spain show the
country may continue to miss its EU deficit
targets for the next three years at least
having already narrowly escaped a 2 billion
fine from Brussels for failing to contain its
debt in 2016.
Spains target for 2016 was for its national
debt not to go above 4.6% of the GDP,
although in autumn 2016, it remained at
nearly 5%. Within the next year, Spain has
pledged to bring its debt down to a maximum
of 3.1% of the GDP, but the Bank of Spain
predicts it will not get below 3.6%.
For 2018 and 2019, Brussels has instructed
Spain to reduce its State deficit to 2.2%
and 1.3% respectively. The Bank of Spain
forecasts a debt-GDP of 3.2% for 2018 and
2.8% for the following year. To meet its
target, the Spanish government needs to
claw back over 7bn more in 2017 than in
2016, which it plans to do by clamping down
on tax evasion among ultra-high net-worth
individuals and companies and increasing
corporation tax.
Minimum wage up by 8% in 2017
Workers minimum wage will go up by 8% in
2017 as part of a gradual move towards its
reaching 60% of the average salary in Spain,
in line with European Union requirements.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The opposition, in majority, approved this

in Parliament, with the aim of the lowestpossible pre-tax pay for a full-time, 40-houra-week job sitting at 950 by the year 2019.
The increase has been made official after the
Lower Chamber formally signed it.
At present, the minimum monthly salary
for a full-time job is 655, albeit over 14
wage packets (a double one in August and
at Christmas) meaning firms which pay 12
salaries a year must give their staff a minimum
of 764.17 a month. Self-employed workers
earning less than the minimum wage are not
required to pay their Social Security stamp, a
fixed monthly fee of 267.03 irrespective of
earnings. For employees; they will not have
to pay more than 3% of their gross salary in
Social Security.
Companies bear the bulk of staffs Social
Security
contributions,
which
covers
healthcare, retirement pension and provision
for State benefits, paying 44% on top
of employees gross wages, but a small
contribution is also made by the employee.

Paternity Leave To Increase

Paternity leave in Spain will increase to four
weeks from January 1st from its existing two
weeks albeit eight years late.
The Law of Equality passed in 2009 allowed
for leave for new dads to be increased,
although this is still far short of maternity
leave.
Although this is good news, it is still far from
sufficient, according to the campaign group
Association for Equal and Non-Transferrable
Birth and Adoption Leave (PPIINA).
It is obligatory for the four-week paternity
leave period to be taken en bloc, which
means it cannot be taken to cover childcare
after the mother goes back to work.
Renfe Announces Wifi In All AVE Trains
Renfe have begun offering Wifi on board its
AVE (high-speed) service, starting with the
Madrid-Seville line, at a cost of between 2
and 4 euros per journey. Renfe will extend
this service to all its other AVE routes,
starting with the Madrid-Barcelona line.
The official launch followed a month of tests,
with an average of 150 passengers per train
connecting to the on-board Wifi during their
journeys, 80% of them women. The majority
chose to use the service in order to watch
films, followed in popularity by Whatsapp
and then to read and write emails or to work.
Renfe is offering two types of connection,
a basic one and a premium service. The
latter allows access to the Movistar+ news
and entertainment content, including live
TV transmissions, including live football
coverage.
A free basic service is being considered for
passengers who sign up to +Renfe, the
railway companys loyalty scheme and for
those travelling in first class.
IVA for online press and e-books
Economy Minister Luis de Guindos has
announced IVA will drop from 21% to 4% for
online newspapers, magazines and e-books,
in line with the paper versions of all three.
IVA on press, media and literature had always
been in the lowest band of 4% until the
drastic IVA reform of September 2012, when
the middle level went up from 8% to 10%
and the top rate from 18% to 21% - having
been only 16% two years previously and
a number of goods and services which used
to attract bottom-band
or super-reduced 4%
IVA moved into the
maximum category.
The IVA drop will be
instant, not staged
gradually.

High-Fat
Diets
Increase
Risk
Of
Metastasis In Cancer Patients
Scientists in Barcelona have discovered
cancerous tumours need fat, or lipids, to
metastasise and that by isolating the fatreceptor protein in malignant cells, the risk
of the disease spreading can be reduced.
Experiments on rats with cancer have shown
that a high-fat diet can accelerate metastasis
by up to 15%. The aim of the experiments
was to try to find the cells which cause
metastasis and examine their properties.
Through this, they discovered the protein
CD36 a fatty-acid receptor which is present
in very high quantities in malignant cells.
The report, published in the science
magazine Nature, says the team tested
a form of therapy on rats, although it has
not yet gone through to the clinical trials on
humans, which involved applying antibodies
to the CD36 protein to block its reception of
fatty acids.
They found that by doing this, in 10% to
15% of cases, the metastasis stopped
altogether and, in those cases where it did
not disappear, it reduced by nearly 90%.
The treatment is not ready to be administered
to human patients, although an agreement
is already in place with a pharmaceutical
company which will attempt to generate
therapeutic antibodies that can be clinicallytrialled on patients with metastatic cancer.
The treatment will firstly be tried out on
patients with mouth cancer, since this is
one of the most aggressive forms and, in
some cases, stops responding to currentlyavailable drugs. A second clinical trial phase
will test the treatment on patients with
cancer of the skin, bladder, ovaries, lungs
and, in few cases, breast cancer.

A very Happy and Prosperous New Year from

all our volunteers and the dogs in our care!
Without your generous sponsorship and
donations we wouldnt be able to do the work
that we do and we were able to do quite a
bit last year thanks to you and the unstinting
hard work of all our volunteers.
At the time of writing weve managed to
home 91 dogs since February 2016 and are
on course to achieving 100! This is a fabulous
result though for our Spanish rescuees
some of their forever homes might be a bit
of a shock.
In November we rescued 7 dogs including
4 pups abandoned on Mazarrn Country
Club. One of the dogs has since had six pups
herself, plus we found foster homes for four
and eight dogs were homed; four to the UK

and four in Spain. In December three of our

dogs found themselves off to Finland (muy
frio!), though Henry in his thick winter coat
doesnt look too unhappy in the snow!
More
good
news.

Only
4-5
weeks
old, he had

After
antibiotics
and some TLC

he is now happily settled in his forever home

with loving owners.
Sadly, in December Sandy Allison passed
away after a long battle with illness. She was
our treasurer until ill health meant she was
unable to continue. She worked unstintingly
on behalf of Noahs ARC for several years.
She will be greatly missed by all that were
privileged to know her. R.I.P. San.
If you would like to offer a foster home or
wish to adopt please get in touch. Details of
our dogs can be found on our website www.
noahsarcmurcia.com Donations can also
be made through our website, Facebook page
NoahsArc Mazarron or in either of our shops
in Camposol and Puerto de Mazarrn. These
are open 10am-2pm Monday to Saturday.
Our van runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday
for the collection of any unwanted furniture,
bric-a-brac, clothes, books etc. and to deliver
items purchased in our shops. We can also
arrange Ecoparque runs for a donation. Just

A very happy New Year from all the Members

of the Mazarrn Bahia Alpha Leos Club!
Firstly a big #leoroar is sent to Healthy
H2O for supplying the water for the Strides
Walk for diabetes last November & also huge
thanks to Dawn Heron at Clida Care who
kindly attended this event & offered diabetes
tests to interested parties who were passing.

Members annual subscriptions & other such

admin fees so that the Leos themselves can
concentrate their efforts on fundraising for
others in need, so an enormous #leoaroar
to them all for their kind support!
December also saw the Leos reunited with
our friends from Mazarrns Cruz Roja at our
sponsoring Lions Club event An Evening
with the Harlequin Rock Choir held at
Marianos Restaurant. The function room was
packed, the Choir rocked the night away &
huge amounts of non-perishable foods were
collected & distributed by Cruz Roja to local
Mazarrn families in need over the festive
period.

January 2017 will see the third anniversary of

the Leos Charter - the official inauguration
as the first Leos Club in mainland Spain. On
Friday 20th January, the Leos will once again
be returning to Marianos for a fundraising
evening hosted by the wonderful Barrington
Dubois. All proceeds raised will go to the
DGenes Asociacin de Enfermedades
Raras based in Totana. This Association
helps to provide disabled children with a
better quality of life (& in some cases life
expectancy) through varying therapies
tailored to their young patients. Proceeds
raised by the Leos will go towards funding
a second DGenes sensory room located
closer to Murcia so that children who are too
unwell to undertake the journey to Totana
can benefit from multisensory therapy. Please
look out for tickets on sale for this fundraiser
from the Lions Friday Morning Market
Stall on Camposol B during the first few
weeks of January.
As the Mazarrn Bahia Alpha Leos enter into
2017, Club Members welcome the challenges
to come & thank their local Community for
their continued support.

The Leos were both delighted & overwhelmed

to receive two donations during December;
firstly from the Team at TJ Electricals &
then from the Condado Ladies Coffee Morning

We ended 2016 with two splendid events.

The Christmas Fayre attracted 30 traders
with a wide variety of Christmas goods for
sale and 430 attendees took advantage of
the great offers available. The Wellspring
Victory Church Choir added to the festive
feel with Christmas songs and carols.

clients received gifts from Santa, Christine
entertained us with seasonal and general
songs which kept the dance floor full.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Open Questions
In the last article we started looking at
the difference between closed and open
questions and how to form them. The
explanation for this takes a bit of time, but
it is worth making the effort because it gives
us the key to asking questions properly in
Spanish and therefore getting the replies
we are looking for!
Last month we said that a closed question
is one that calls for a yes or no answer.
Do you live in Spain? is a closed question,
as the initial response is yes or no. Of
course in reality we would rarely answer
with just one word as this would sound too
abrupt. We would probably say Yes, I do
actually, or No, I dont unfortunately, or
we would give more information: Well

yes I do most of the time, but we do visit

family in the UK a couple of times a year.
However, these lengthier responses do not
alter the fact that the original question is a
closed one.
To make a closed question in Spanish,
all we have to do is make an affirmative
statement sound like a question with our
voice. Here is the statement:
You live in Spain.
Vives en Espaa.
Now to make it a question:
Do you live in Spain?
Vives en Espaa?
There is no change in the order of the words
and neither do we include any equivalent of
the word do. As you can see, when writing
the question we also add an upside down
question mark at the front the sentence.
Here is a longer closed question which you
will see adopts exactly the same principle:
Does your brothers wife play tennis on
Saturdays?
To get to this in Spanish we first have to
make it into a statement: Your brothers
wife plays tennis on Saturdays, then we
translate the statement making the question
with our voice:
La mujer de tu hermano juega al
tenis los sbados?

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

So, what then are open questions and

how to do they work? An open question
requires a response that consists of more
information than just yes or no. Also,
an open question begins with what we call
a question word.
An easy example is:
Where do you live? We cannot correctly
answer yes or no to this; we are
obliged by the question to name a location.
Although it may sound obvious, it is also
important to note the fact that the response
is prompted by the question word itself. In

52

www.costacalidachronicle.com

other words Where calls for the name of

a place, When asks for a time, Who asks
for a person, Why asks for a reason and
so on.
This is how we make an open question in
Spanish. We start with the question word,
or small group of words which create the
question. Often this is one word: Dnde,
Cundo, Quin, but it can be two: Por
qu, De dnde and can also include
other ideas:
Cuntos hijos?
How many children?
De qu color?
What colour?
The next item in the open question is the
verb, giving us:
Dnde vives?
Where do you live?
Cuntos hijos tienes?
How many children have you got?

Por qu ests corriendo?

Why are you running?
So far we have looked at examples that
are addressing questions to you; that is
questions in the second person. Although
the structure might seem very easy, we
need to keep it in mind to move on to asking
questions in the third person, about he or
she. We will look at that next month and
hopefully Ill also have enough room for
some more Spanish to translate.
See you then!

Pontus is 1 year
old rescued Spanish
sheep herding dog.
He likes to run and
retrieve balls, which
are his favourite
toy. He also loves
the water, so if
you want a dog to
walk with you on
the beach that will
make you laugh as
he runs in and out of the surf, this may be the
dog for you. He is very good around children
and when necessary is very protective by
barking to create alarm. He is good around
cats and with female dogs, but does not like
to be too close to other intact male dogs.
Sally is just 8
months old. In her
short life she has
been
discarded
by the people she
thought
would
protect her, ending
up on the streets
being bullied by
the feral cats and prevented from getting
near the food that we put out. Sally is not
a street cat. After a few traumatized weeks
and in the pouring rain when the other cats
were under cover, she came to us and walked
immediately into the cat box next to us. Now
over her ordeal she purrs as soon as she gets
onto a lap and will make a great house cat
and pet companion. Sally has been blood
tested, all negative, vaccinated and sterilised.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

As my husband and I notch up the years

we find ourselves searching for the
healthier option where food is concerned
and January is a good time for you to
start thinking about changing your diet.
Nuts feature very heavily in this quest
for the best foods as Nuts contain good
cholesterol. Nuts are also very good for
anyone on a gluten-free, low-sodium or
low-carbohydrate diet or for vegetarians.
There is something for everyone below
including healthy bars for snacks and a
chance for me to include a few sweet
options. The fruit and nut bars are very
easy to make and with my husband being
diabetic, I just substitute the sugar for
powdered Candrel and it works fine. The
cookies are a little more involved, but if
you make a big batch of dough you can
break it into portions and freeze them up
to 3 months. The cashew butter is lovely
on toast, with a banana or whisk up for
smoothie.

Fruit and Nut Bars

1 large egg
1 large egg white
1 cup light brown sugar
1 tbsp canola oil
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cups toasted oats
2/3 cup chopped dried cranberries/golden
raisins
cup chopped pecans
1 tbsp all-purpose flour

4 tbsp unsalted butter (room temperature)

2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
cup chopped roasted peanuts
Whisk white whole-wheat flour, all-purpose
flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt
in a medium bowl. Beat sugar, peanut
butter, oil and butter in a mixing bowl with
an electric mixer on high until smooth. Add
eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth.
Add the flour mixture and mix on low
speed until just combined. Place half the
dough on a large piece of plastic wrap
and shape into a 10-inch log (its OK if
its not perfectly round). Repeat with the
remaining dough. Wrap and freeze until
just firm, about 45 minutes. Re-roll the
logs to make them rounder and return to
the freezer until very firm (at least 1 hour).
Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet
with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
Remove one roll of dough at a time
from the freezer and let it stand at room
temperature for 5 minutes. Unwrap the
dough and slice crosswise into thick
rounds, turning the dough a quarter turn
after each slice to help keep the cookies
round. Place apart on the prepared
baking sheet. If your cookies arent as
round as you would like, shape the dough
with your fingers. Sprinkle each cookie with
a little chopped peanuts and gently press
into the cookie to help them adhere. Bake
8 minutes for soft cookies or 10 minutes
for crisp cookies. Transfer to a wire rack to
cool. Repeat with second roll.
Cashew Butter
1 cups unsalted cashews
1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
2 tbsp sesame seeds
1 tbsp canola oil/melted coconut oil
tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350F.
Spread cashews, coconut and sesame
seeds in a shallow baking dish. Bake,
stirring once or twice, until fragrant, 8-10
minutes. Transfer to a food processor; add
oil and salt. Process, stopping to scrape
down the sides as needed, until smooth
and creamy (8-10 minutes).

Preheat oven to 325F. Line an 8 x 11 pan

with foil. Coat with cooking spray.
Whisk egg, egg white, sugar, oil, cinnamon,
salt and vanilla in a large bowl. Stir in
oats, cranberries/raisins, pecans and flour.
Spread in prepared pan. Bake until golden
brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool & cut into
bars with a lightly oiled knife.
Peanut Butter Cookies
1 cups white whole-wheat flour
1 cups all-purpose flour

Date and Pine Nut Oatmeal

1 cup water
Pinch of salt
cup old-fashioned rolled oats
2 tbsp chopped dates
1 tbsp toasted pine nuts
1 tsp honey
tsp ground cinnamon
Bring water and salt to a boil in a small
saucepan. Stir in oats, reduce heat to
medium and cook, stirring occasionally,
until most of the liquid is absorbed, about
5 minutes. Remove from heat, cover and
let stand or 2-3 minutes. Top with dates,
pine nuts, honey and cinnamon.

Overnight Oats Variation

Combine cup old-fashioned rolled oats
with cup water and a pinch of salt in a jar
or bowl. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
In the morning, add toppings. Eat cold or
heat up. Makes about 1 cup.
People with Celiac Disease or glutensensitivity should use oats that are labelled
gluten-free, as oats are often crosscontaminated with wheat and barley.
Flourless Almond Cake
cup whole almonds, toasted
4 large eggs (room temperature) separated
cup honey
1 tsp vanilla extract
tsp baking soda
tsp salt
Topping
2 tbsp honey
cup sliced almonds, toasted

Preheat oven to 350F. Coat a 9-inch

spring form pan with cooking spray. Line
the bottom with parchment paper and
spray the paper. Process whole almonds
in a food processor or blender until finely
ground (you will have about 1 cups
ground). Beat 4 egg yolks, honey, vanilla,
baking soda and salt in a large mixing
bowl with an electric mixer on medium
speed until well combined. Add the ground
almonds and beat on low until combined.
Beat 4 egg whites in another large bowl
with the electric mixer on medium speed
until very foamy, white and double in
volume, but not stiff enough to hold peaks,
(1-2 minutes). Using a rubber spatula,
gently fold the egg whites into the nut
mixture until just combined. Scrape the
batter into the prepared pan. Bake the
cake until golden brown and a skewer
inserted into the centre comes out clean,
about 28 minutes. Let cool in the pan for
10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge
of the pan and gently remove the side ring.
Let cool completely. If desired, remove the
cake from the pan bottom by gently sliding
a large, wide spatula between the cake and
the parchment paper. Carefully transfer the
cake to a serving platter. To serve, drizzle
the top of the cake with honey and sprinkle
with sliced almonds.

Nuts (nuez) nueces

We could not cover the subject of Nuts
without looking at the Almond (almendra)
as so many trees are grown and harvested
in the area and Spain has one of the most
diverse commercial cultivars of almonds.
The Almond, a deciduous tree, is
native to the Middle East, the Indian
Subcontinent and North Africa. The flowers
are white to pale pink and appear before
the leaves in early spring.

becoming a more common sight.
Shelling Almonds refers to removing the
shell to reveal the seed which are sold
shelled or unshelled. Blanched Almonds
are shelled almonds that have been
treated with hot water to soften the seed
coat, which is then removed to reveal the
white nut.
While the Almond is often eaten on its
own, raw or toasted, it is also a component
of various dishes. They are available
in many forms, such as whole, sliced
(flaked, slivered), and as flour. Almonds
yield Almond Oil and can also be made
into Almond Butter or Almond Milk.
These products can be used in both sweet
and savoury dishes.

The fruit of the Almond is a drupe,

consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell
with the seed, which is not a true nut,

autumn using various methods. The long
established, very labour-intensive, method

Crnica Alto Alhrabe Sunday 4th

December - Walking in the rain!
We were a large group of brave walkers,
who did not give in to adversity. Although
water in Murcia is a rarity, it is not easy to
start walking very early in the rain!

We started the walk from the Bancal de

la Carrasca, because we wanted to visit
another new section of our mountain
river. The route forced us to cross the
river, where we found the first animal
signs of the morning; some excrement!
We had to vary the planned route since it
was too foggy to ascend through it. We
continued up the road until we reached the
ruins of the farmhouse of the Dehesica,
which languishes forgotten. We found the
fossilized skeletons of those who lived
millions of years ago. The stones we stepped

We found different bird feathers of the

Cabebo and Pito and traces of an Ibex.
We enjoyed the mystery and beauty of an
authentic autumnal landscape, but the rain
continued and we looked forward to a fire
to warm our wet bodies and the food that
awaited us at restaurant La Puerta. Here
we tasted the first of the years olive oil.

avoid getting our feet

side of the stream,
our walk followed
a path until we

ourselves
in a small ravine that
hid a waterfall. The

as territorial marks by foxes. We noticed
that it is juniper berries that the fox had
eaten and the mosses, thirsty for moisture,
looked an almost phosphorescent green
after their dry and brown appearance just
a few weeks ago. The bridge we usually
crossed was dragged downstream at the

by the fog. A Kestrel emerged like a ghost
out of the fog which isolated us from the
real world and transported us to the time
that these ancient walls defended the
inhabitants perhaps millennia ago. We
ascended in search of the shelter offered
by the great hollows caused by erosion,
until we reached some cattle pens. We
searched for a good place to have lunch
and dry a little. The views from here were
impressive, even with the fog.

If we put Jesus uppermost during our day

and give Him the glory and honour He so
justly deserves, then everything else will
fall into place. Matthew 6:33 tells us Seek
ye first the kingdom of God.

During one of our services recently whilst

we were having prayer time, my laptop
suddenly sounded a warning signal. I
pushed it to the back of my mind, as it so
happened I was the one leading the prayer.

This year I plan to try and do just that and

quit panicking. How about you?

When I was able to check it I also had a

warning message LOW BATTERY - LESS
THAN 5% - PLUG INTO MAINS AND
RECHARGE. I couldnt understand why,
as it had been on charge all night, then
we realised it was in the same adapter as
the light which had been turned off for the
night, at the switch.

Dont panic Mr Mainwaring sprang to

mind, (remember him?) and it was a mad
scramble to find the charging lead, along
with the three-pin adapter I had so tidily put
away earlier to enable us to continue with
the service. So much for efficiency!
Thinking about it later, here was a message
for us all; what we were doing at the time
was infact recharging our batteries by
communicating with our Saviour.
We become frustrated when we take on
more than we can chew, so to speak. We
rush around trying to get everything done
and seem to often meet ourselves coming
backwards and for us this last week has
been no exception. So much for being
retired!
However, a good part of the time has been
taken up with fellowship with other Christians
gossiping about Jesus and somehow it has
put everything else into perspective. Our
batteries have been recharged.

It had to happen! The very welcome rain

always disrupts at least one of the walks
that weve planned and this time it was three
in a row! The outings planned for the end
of November (Judy and Tonys around the
picturesque and historic site of Bolvonegro
on the outskirts of Moratalla) and in
December (Jill and Allans route around
beautiful Ricote) also Carla and Douwes
on the plains of Cagitn (between Mula,
Calasparra and Cieza) were all cancelled.
With focus on Christmas festivities, it wasnt
possible to make concrete arrangements to
reschedule all of these offerings, but Im
sure that we shall be able to persuade all
parties to reschedule for some time in the
near future.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

Yes please; no thank you! We all know the

basics, so why am I writing a column about
manners and whats that got do to with travel?

Simply put, its vitally important to know

about the manners and customs of the country you are visiting, because what we think
of as right and wrong, or polite and impolite,
can be very different abroad. Putting your
foot in it, can be very embarrassing at best,
or land you in jail at worst. Thousands of
Brits get arrested abroad every year, often
for things that are legal back home. Remember, ignorance is no excuse
For example:
Dont feed the pigeons in Venice; you will
be fined.
Dont chew gum on the metro in Singapore;
you will be fined.
Dont take nasal spray into Japan; you will
be fined.
In Florence; dont sit outside on the steps of
a courtyard in the vicinity of churches and
eat or drink; you will be fined.
In parts of Spain, dont walk around town in
your swimwear; you will be fined.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Putting your foot in it in Saudi Arabia, is

serious stuff. Alcohol in Saudi, is illegal, so
dont even bother thinking about sneaking
in a bottle of vino. Even on board your flight
on the way in; dont down a couple of G &
Ts. When you arrive, if the authorities suspect you may be under the influence, you
can be arrested and sent to prison.

Dont whistle inside a Russians

that all the money will fly out the

If youre invited to a Russians home,

ask in advance who will be there.
If youre told that the grandmother
will be there, then bring her flowers.
If children are to be present, bring
them sweets. Yes, yes I know, we
dont do this kind of thing in the UK
these days, kids and sugar and all
that, but this is Russia and they do,
so do it!

Inevitably
it
will
turn
to
politics. Be careful; the vast majority
wont take any criticism whatsoever
of their country, even
if they know what
youre saying is true.
Most
importantly,
whatever you think
of todays Russia and

when it comes to
WWII. Even, if like
me,
you
detest
communism and the
USSR, remember that
20 million Russians

Its not just getting into trouble with the

law; you can also offend the locals when it
comes to their traditions and customs. During the many years Ive spent in Russia, Ive
come across some real head scratchers.
These can also be found in parts of Ukraine
and even other ex-republics.
The following may sound rather silly to us,
but believe me, its often taken very seriously:
* Never attempt to shake hands over
the threshold of a Russians home.
If you do so, it means youll have an
argument with your host.

Russians love flowers. Men buy

them for their wives, girlfriends and
mothers, so, youre in Moscow and
have bagged yourself a hot date.
You decide to give her the classic
introduction present, a dozen red
roses. Big mistake! Even-numbered
flowers are only given at funerals,
so best not to hand them over to a
lady youre trying to impress! Never
give red carnations, for they are
either placed on graves, or given to
Soviet war veterans. Oh heck, just
buy her a box of chocolates instead;
its safer!

holds a very special if a somewhat

warped place in their hearts. I get
away with it, amongst friends, but it
does raise the hackles somewhat.
*

Whilst visiting Muslim countries, this

one is rather difficult for me, since
Im left handed. When eating street
food in a local Arab market, try to
avoid eating with your left hand;
always use your right. The left hand
is seen as unclean and is used to
wipe your *** - I think you get the
picture!

Try not to point your feet at anyone

and never show the soles of your
feet for they are seen as the lowest
and dirtiest part of the body.

If you want to visit a Mosque; go

for it. Ive been in Mosques in hardcore countries from Uzbekistan to
Palestine to Kyrgyzstan and Kosovo
and Ive always been made very
welcome. Just remember some
golden rules: Take your shoes off
and leave them outside.

Once inside, sit at the back, tuck

your feet underneath you and remain
quiet.

Dont speak or take photos if prayer

is taking place.

If you are venturing off the beaten track and

dont want to offend the locals; dont panic.
Just read up on the dos and donts before
you go.
I highly recommend the British Foreign Office travel website; its a goldmine of information on every country in the world. I use
it every day.
Wherever you go, the locals will understand you are foreign and wont expect you
to know all their customs and quirky rules.
They will forgive indiscretion, but if they see
you have made an effort to learn some of
their customs and manners, they will really
appreciate it and go that extra mile for you.
Remember, you are a guest in their country,
never forget that.
Treat a person and their culture with
respect and theyll do likewise to you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017

Once again, the team at Dragontours
wishes you all, our faithful clients from long
ago this year marks our 20th year! To all
our newcomers and those who dont know
us yet but will become clients soon, a very
Happy New Year. We wish the best for you
all, this year and many more to come.
January, the month of new beginnings and
full of promise is also a great time to plan
a trip away from the cold, although in the
Costa Clida, the cold is not great nor longlived. Let me suggest a few great places for
a post-Christmas get-away.

famous as well as is the tallest mountain

(an active volcano!) of Spain; el Teide. No
less famous are the quiet sandy beaches of
Gran Canaria, the black sands and austerity
of Lanzarote, the wild winds sought after
by wind-surfers of Fuerteventura and the
smaller but amazingly beautiful islands of
La Gomera, Hierro and La Palma.

If you like staying closer to home, just take

a short break to one of the delightful spahotels within a short distance of Mazarrn.
Let Dragontours advise you and make
your bookings for spectacular savings.

The Canary Islands is a wonderful

destination and offers not only year-around
pleasant temperatures, but also an incredible
variety of landscapes and leisure pleasures.

What a night to finish the year! This was our

largest attendance so far, boosted by 25 of
our German friends who come here for the
winter.
Everyone seemed determined to have a
great night and that is exactly what Johnny
Scott gave us. During the 4 years this club
has been running, this was one of the best,
if not the best, we have had.
A fond farewell was given to Rosemary and
Hayden, with almost everyone forming a
circle round them whilst dancing and singing

There is something for everyone. Why

not take a few weeks off and explore this
beautiful part of Spain whilst enjoying yearround nearly perfect weather? Try out the
Spanish cruise line which visits most of the
islands during a weeks all-inclusive cruise.

A big big thank you to each and every
one who came along by contributing to a
memorable night, particularly those who
brought along mince pies and items for the
raffle. This was very much appreciated.
Johnny Scott will be back in June.

We normally meet the 1st Friday of each

month in Marianos Camposol A starting at
7.45pm playing requests until the live act
comes on at 9pm. All this for 4! However,
our night in January will be on the 2nd
Friday (13th January) when Martin Ross will
put on his country hat and provide the live
music.
In February we revert back to the 1st Friday
(3rd February) when we have a new name to
the club, Roz McQuillan.

It All Goes Back In The Box

A Very Happy New year to you all.
Christmas is over for another year and
its time to move on to the next phase of
our calendar. Today Ill wish all my friends
a Happy New Year and well start to think
about putting away the Christmas tree for
another year. All the baubles, trimmings
and the Christmas angel will all go back in
the box.
Life goes on and before you know it the
shops will be displaying Creme Eggs,
Valentines Cards and then it will be time
for chocolate Easter eggs to fill the store
windows.
Isnt it easy to compartmentalise our lives!
Of course the seasons of the weather even
here in Spain help us to know when certain
things will happen. Lets for a minute look
back to the winter nights drawing in first
the clocks go back and before you know it
its dark by five oclock and our thoughts
naturally turn to Christmas. The shops will
be full of cards and gift ideas. This magazine
will have pictures of Father Christmas on
the cover and there will be lots of seasonal
greetings from firms wanting to thank us for
past trade and hoping we will be back again
to do business in the coming year.
As Christmas draws near there will be
many seasonal activities. Various charities
will hold Christmas Fayres with Father
Christmas ringing his bell and tucked away
in a corner a church group will sing carols.
All across Camposol, each sector will have a
carol concert with Carols, Christmas songs
and readings.

Lili who is a
fabulous big girl
and very loving,
will
make
a
wonderful family
pet. Lili was so
thin we never
realised
until
she was almost
ready to give birth. She had 10 puppies but
sadly 2 have died. She is a great mum and
the pups that were born on 9th December
are doing well. When Lili is ready for her
new home she will be spayed and fully
vaccinated.
Chica is a lovely
girl who is still
looking for her
forever
home.
She is a really
nice looking girl
that needs a
loving home of
her own. Chica

Well all have remembered the baby

Jesus and the Christmas story; how Mary,
accompanied by her husband Joseph, rode
by donkey from Nazareth to Bethlehem to
be registered in the census. There was no
room in the inn and so the baby Jesus was
born in a stable.
We will have sung of the shepherds who had
been watching their flocks when an angel
visited and of the wise men from the east
that brought gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh.

is approximately 18 months old, fully

vaccinated and spayed. She is also used to
lots of other dogs.
Sandy through
no fault of her
own came back
into the care of
Little Starfish
and
is
now
looking for her
forever
home.
She loves to run
and play and
she is good with
other dogs and
children so a
great family pet. Sandy is fully vaccinated
and spayed.
All adoptions are subject to home checks.
We would like to wish you all a very
Happy New Year and may all your
dreams come true.

whereas the reality is the philosophers have

died; their names lost from our memories,
but Jesus, the Son of God lives on.
Will you put Jesus back in the box this
New Year OR will you keep Him in your
heart and mind not just for the New
Year but for the eternity he promises?
Once again, a very Happy New Year from
all at Wellspring Church. A very warm
welcome awaits you at any of our meetings.
www.wellspringvictorychurch.com

Now Christmas is over its time to put

everything back in the box. The shops will
have packed Christmas away for another
year. The tree is taken down and packed
away. The baubles are carefully wrapped
and put in their box and Jesus is packed
away for another year.
Yes, you read that right.
For so many people Jesus came out of the
box for a few days of celebration, but now
its time to put him away again, but as one
car sticker said Jesus is for life not just
Christmas. You see the baby Jesus that
we so lovingly remember each Christmas
grew into a boy then a youth and finally a
man.
The baby we adored was destined for far
greater things. He would become saviour
of the world. His teachings would be
remembered 2,000 years later. His sacrifice
on a cross would spill precious blood that
would still be redeeming lives in 2017.
Philosophers over the years have proclaimed
that God and Christianity would soon die,

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

A Very Happy New Year to all our

friends, followers and Costa Clida
Chronicle readers!
The end of the year was amazing in spite
of rain, damp and cold. Our Horsemanship
course, which concentrated on the handling
of young horses and the health and
welfare of Therapy and Para-equestrian
horses with Tony Sanchez Valinyas, was
a very special learning experience. Tony
is a great teacher and a gentle leader of
horses. He can see into the very spirit of
each one and extract incredible reactions.
In his hands Gabriella allowed him to pick
up her back hooves for the very first time,
young King Orry joined up with him and
became totally independent of his mum,
Pitusa, with no signs of panic or trauma
and Hope was introduced to a new friend
and companion, India. All the horses and
ponies Tony worked with gave him their
total trust whatever the bad experiences
that have caused them to have physical
and psychological hang-ups.

That same weekend a team of Cavalli

Foundation and ASEMUR Emergency
Volunteers manned the Cavalli stand
during the morning of the International
Volunteers celebration in Alhama. The
morning started off dim, grey and wet,
but nothing could dampen our spirits.

74

We rescued a poor, bony hunting dog

from the RM-603 near Los Ventorrillos.
He kept running into the road, obviously
having been dumped from a car. ASEMUR
volunteer, Rocio, is fostering him while
he gets checked for a chip and has his
vaccinations before he goes to a new
home.
Many people came to visit our stand and
there was hot chocolate and churros.
Eventually it stopped raining, the sun
came out and the people from Sunday
Mass poured into the square. The Scouts
did their dance three times and the
atmosphere was buzzing.
The Mayor
stopped to talk to us about the Cavalli
Ranch Project in Gebas.
We have had great success with the
Cowboy School of Values. We adopted
a method of integration that gives rein
to each childs abilities and hyperactive
youngsters have calmed down, less agile
children have started to run, climb and play
with other kids and the more intelligent
children have found new interests. The
children are spending less time watching
TV and playing computer games and are
now talking, playing and looking at books.
Our activities are designed to help people
help horses whilst feeling the benefit of
the good vibes and peace that abound
within the confines of Cavalli Foundation
Centre, a charitable non-profit-making
organisation. We rely on the money from
our activities and donations as we have
loads of mouths.

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

The timing of our last outing before

Christmas, from a weather-wise point
of view, could not have been better.
Considering the rain experienced over
the past few days, it was wonderful to be
playing golf with the sun on our backs.
The early morning mist made the start a
bit on the damp side, but the sun soon
burned this off revealing a beautifully
prepared course, a credit to the Lorca Golf
management and the green keepers staff.
The format for the day was a Pairs
Combined Stableford and we were playing
for the Decklid Trophy kindly donated by
Dave and his wife Dianne. Competition was
as fierce as normal with the final results
extremely close.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The worthy winners of the trophy with a

combined score of 70 points were Tony

According to our very own diarist Samuel
Mr Whippy Peeps, LAGS have in fact
played here before; in 2012 apparently,
although no-one else could remember it.
In those days the facilities were sparse to
say the least. All that was available was
a hut to change in, a vending machine for
a coffee and no shade! Even now there
are still few directional signs for the golf
complex, but all players managed to arrive
on time; that is with the exception of the
most important man, the Treasurer!
How different things are today; A fully
operational Jack Nicklaus designed golf
course with undulating fairways and
greens, both beautifully manicured; a fully
operational club house complete with well

The clocks had just gone back, so an

11.27am first tee time meant that some
rounds would not be complete until dusk
at the earliest. Our captain led by example
dressing in line with the old adage wear
something light at night.
He wore a
white shirt, white trousers and a white hat
and looked more like a cricketer than a
golfer. He could however be spotted from
everywhere on the course which, given it
was his last competition as Captain, we will
forgive him for! Conditions were blustery
and the temperatures considerably lower
than in recent days, weeks and months!
Most other members dressed appropriately.

Mazarrn FCs win away to Plus Ultra

on 11th December moved them up to 9th
place in the league with just one game
to play before the Christmas break. The
position would have been much better if
they had not lost at home to Jumilla CD the
previous week in a game which should not
have been played. The monsoon conditions
rendered the pitch at the Estadio Municipal
virtually unplayable and, in a game in
which Mazarrn created virtually all the
chances, it was ironic that Jumilla should
win the game with their only strike on
target. Victory in that game, coupled with
the win at Plus Ultra the following week,
would have taken Mazarrn to within
one point of a play-off position and would
have been a remarkable achievement
considering that three weeks before
the start of the season the Club had no
President and no players.

Mazarrn FCs home games are normally

played on Sundays with varying kick off
times. Admission has been reduced to 3
with juveniles under 16 free. Los Amigos

coach to most away games at 8 for
members and 10 for non-members. Full
details of all games, dates and kick off
times are advertised in the local media, on

various points throughout Camposol and

MBC play in two winter Leagues: Division

A in the LLB Southern League and the
Voyager Division of the South Alicante
League. Competition is extremely stiff
in both these Leagues, but especially in
the LLB League where Mazarrn Miners
are competing against players from the
Spanish National Squad. However, its a
very different story in the South Alicante
League where the Mazarrn Mariners
are currently 2nd in the results table and
only 1 point behind the leaders.
The Autumn Triples League Competition
is progressing well and the Club
Championships have begun in earnest with
all the first rounds completed. There have
been some surprising upsets this year with
the new members that only started in the
summer doing extremely well.

November was the final month of our

playing year, starting with our AGM on
the 10th and our Presentation Day held at
Hacienda Del Alamo on the 24th. This event
is held in memory of Gerry Clarke who was
sadly lost to us several years ago. Many
resident and overseas members come
together to mark the occasion.

On 20th November an in house match was

played in a 1 2 3 format. This comprises
3 people in a team with one person playing
the singles element of the game for 6
ends, then the other two play pairs for six
ends and finally all three members of the
team play triples for 8 ends. The winning
team for each segment gets a bonus of 3
points. The worthy winners this year were
Ron Potts, Andrew Bunce and Douglas
Macfarlane.

MBC look forward to welcoming any new

people that wish to try the game of bowls
or established players wishing to take up
the game in Spain. All are welcome at
Thursday roll-up days, 10am for a 10.30am
start. Further details can be obtained from
our website mazarronbowlsclub.webs.
com or from the Secretary, Sue Hattrell at
mazarronbc@live.co.uk
MBC finished their successful year of bowls
with a Christmas Party at Bar Med on 8th
December.

Division Three was won by Derek Hayward

with 23 points and Jack Ward in second
place only on count back.

Other awards presented were Order

Of Merit to Neil McFarlane and Most
Improved Player to Gavin Elbourne.

The Gerry Clarke Memorial Trophy was

won by our guest Lee Grainger on count
back from Gerry McRobert also with 34
points.

Our next game is at Roda on January 26th.

If anyone wishes to join FOGGS or just play
as a guest please contact us by email at
info@fuenteoldguardgolfsociety.com

Although the course had a thorough

drenching the day before, the weather was
kind to us on the day and the players made
the best of some of the more difficult lies.
In Division One, Gerry McRobert came first
with a respectable score of 34 points with
Ron Smart in second place with 31 points.
In top spot in Division Two was Michael
Laycock with 32 points closely followed by
Bob Daffon with 31 points.

Nearest the Pins were won by Keith,

Peter, Roger and Mark with The Twos
Money rolled over to the next game.
Also played was the Singles Matchplay
Final which was won by Dave Simpson
with Chris Andrews in second place for the
third year running.
The game was followed by the presentations
and lunch at the Spaniards Inn and the day
was sponsored by our friends from Avalon.

Lap record 1m 40.279s held by S.

Vettel Red Bull (2009).
This was 8th race to be held at this dusty
desert circuit, built on a man made island
and running around the marina. It initially
hosted the finale for two years before
Brazil took over from 2011-2013 and
returned to the end of year slot for 2014.
The anti-clockwise circuit has 21 turns and
2 long straights. The drivers change gear
75 times per lap (4,125 times during the
race) they are on full throttle for 56% of
the lap and reach a top speed of 341km/h
(211.8mph) using 1.82kg of fuel per lap
(100.1kg during the race). This circuit
also has a long and unique pit lane with
the entry just before the final turn and
the exit after winding under the circuit
rejoining the track just before turn 3. It
was as usual a twilight race with the start
being at 5pm local time (14:00 CET) with
the natural light fading and being replaced
by floodlights as both qualifying & race
progressed. It also showed the fantastic
display of lights on the domed roof of the
hotel. The only sessions to be run in full
daylight were FP1 & FP3 at 1pm & 2pm
local time.
Seb won his first title at this circuit in
2010 & Ham won his second here in 2014.
Red Bull have had 3 pole positions & 3
wins here; McLaren with 2 pp & 1 win &
Mercedes with 2 pole and 2 wins; Lotus
just 1 win. Current drivers with victories
at this circuit are Seb 3, Ham 2, Kimi
& Nico with 1 apiece.
After 8 months of travelling around 20
different countries the teams arrived
at Abu Dhabi for the final race of the

80

www.costacalidachronicle.com

longest season in the history of the World

Championship. Williams had a slight
change in their colour scheme with the red
stripe missing and the Martini name not
being displayed to keep in line with the
alcohol licensing laws of the UAE. Massa
entered his final F1 race here after 15
years in the top echelon of Motorsport.
It was a glorious sunny start to the final
GP weekend at this very dusty & sandy
circuit with the temperature at 29C.
Jordan King was in the Manor of Ocon
for the first 90 minute practice session;
his second outing of the season after
his run in FP1 at the American GP. Celis
Jnr also took part in FP1 for the 6th time
this season. The Mexican was driving
the Force India of Hlk. Seb & Dani both
had another run with the halo system.
Dani had a puncture and pulled off the
circuit causing a brief yellow flag as the
marshals removed his car. Grosjean had
his session cut short after a serious lock
up and a spin ruining his tyres. Apart from
that the session went fairly smoothly with
no major dramas. Ham, Nico, Max, Ricci
& Seb were the top five. FP2 at 5pm local
time with sunset due at 5.30pm, the light
began to fade and the spotlights took over.
Hlk & Ocon were back in their respective
cars. Dani had another puncture almost
crashing into the wall. J.B managed to get
on track after 35 minutes of sitting in the
garage while his car was being worked on.
Grosjean had a water pressure problem
& Seb suffered with gearbox gremlins.
Again there were a lot of spins and offs,
but nothing serious. Ham, Nico, Seb, Max
& Ricci were the top five.
It was another hot and sunny 30C day
for the 63rd and final practice session of
the year, problems for Toro Rosso as
the mechanics worked frantically on the
cars and once again there were lock ups
spins and offs, but the hour went fairly
smoothly. Seb topped the time sheets
with Max, Kimi, Ham & Nico making up the
top five. The 22 drivers during the three
sessions completed 1,531 laps totalling
8,503.2kms.
Qualifying started at 5pm local time with
the temperature at 26C and again sunset
due at 5.30pm when the floodlights came
on. The Toro Rosso drivers had some
catching up to do after problems during
the practice session; Dani only managed
21 laps in the 3 sessions and Jnr with 36.
Q1 went fairly well and without dramas.
Ham, Kimi, Seb, Max & Nico were the top
five with both Sauber & Toro Rosso cars
going out along with KMag and Ocon.
It was the first time that Jnr fell by the
wayside in Q1 making it his worst quali
position since he crashed out at the US
GP last year. Q2 under full floodlights was
a trouble-free 15 minutes. Both Haas
drivers went out as did Wehrlein, Palmer,
J.B and Val, (the Finns 7th time this

season) with all 7 being in 11th place. Ham

was again on top followed by Nico, Kimi,
Max & Seb making up the top five. The
top ten shoot-out was its usual fast and
furious 12 minutes and ended with Ham
getting his 12th pole position of the year,
3rd at this circuit and 63rd of his career
and only 0.303s ahead of Nico and in the
dying seconds Ricci snatched 3rd place
away from Kimi who was 0.057s ahead of
Seb. Nico started from 2nd on the grid for
the 13th time this season the other 8 races
were pole positions. That seemed like a
good and consistent record to me.
The race as per qualifying started with
the sun setting, but still with an ambient
temperature of 26C. Off they went with
a 305mtr run to the first corner. Ham held
off Nico who was fighting with Ricci. Hlk
had a coming together with Max sending
the Red Bull into a spin and dropping him
to the back of the pack. Palmer ran into
the back of Jnr for which the Renault driver
was handed a 5 second time penalty.
After a very exciting and action packed
1h 38m 04.013s race with some more
wheel banging and very brave overtaking
manoeuvres and some close calls, as well
as more lock ups, spins and off circuit
excursions, Ham won, giving him his 10th
victory of the season, 3rd at this circuit and
63rd of his career. Nico & Seb joined him on
the podium. Max, who drove a superb race
from the back, (after his spin) finished in
4th place; Ricci, Kimi, Hlk, Checo, Massa
(in his last race) & Alo being the points
scorers. KMag, Val & J.B (in his last race)
all retired with suspension failure and both
Toro Rosso drivers were out with gearbox
gremlins. Seb posted the fastest lap of
1m 43.729s on lap 43. The drivers made
40 pit stops during the race, 2 less than
last year. A very strong weekend for Force
India as Hlk and Checo finished 7th & 8th
respectively and secured 4th place in the
Constructors Championship (the teams
best ever result); a good result for Sauber
to get 10th place and the prize money that
goes with it.
Nico got his first and well deserved World
Drivers Championship 34 years after
his father Keke did it in 1982 driving for
Williams. That makes him only the second
father/son champion in the history of the
F1 World Championship (after Graham Hill
won in 62 & 68 & Damon Hill in 96, a gap
of 28 years).
Mercedes AMG team have dominated by
getting 20 of the 21 pole position and 19 of
the 21 wins this season; Ricci getting the
pole at Monaco and winning at Malaysia
and Max winning in Spain.
Now we have that very long 17 week winter
break until the first round in Australia on
26th March 2017 and a 20 race calendar
to look forward to providing none of the
others fall by the wayside.

This was due to take place on 16th December when the new Captain Des Bunn
was to be the first to tee off and there are
bets taken as too how far Des can drive
the first ball. Unfortunately this could not

as we rarely have such consistent rain and
our competitions curtailed. It is usually

by a few glasses of mulled wine, but this
was also postponed. The results will be in

Autumn Series 2016. Five race days
were completed the other three were
unable to be held because clashing events
made sailing impossible.
The results are calculated using the low
points system, with best six results to
count. The clear winner was Shoestring
Groups Cuatro with 13.75 points. Second
was the Balaton Groups Sirocco with
20.5 points, closely followed in third
place by Shoestring Dos with 21 points
and fourth Shoestring Uno with 21.75

which everyone enjoyed. The 3 winners
of the day were 1st Eugene Toye, 2nd Jack
Brennon with Norman Morgan 3rd.
The CGA had presented 50 to the Men
and 30 to the Ladies to be used to buy
meat vouchers for the Turkey Trot prizes.
The difference in the amounts was due to
pro rota men to lady golfers.
Christmas Dinner Dance
The Camposol Golf Association booked
the ever popular Hotel Costas Celebration Rooms Mazarron for their Christmas
Dinner Dance held on 9th December. 112
revellers had a great night there as usual.
The food, service and with the great value
for money you cannot beat it as a venue.

points. For the non-mathematicians thats

just 1.75 points between second and
fourth; about as close as you can get.
Congratulations to all who took part.
As Group owned boats they were all
sailed by different skippers and crews
so the trophies for the top three places
were presented to a representative of
each; Diane Hardwick for Cuatro, Terry
Chapman for Sirocco and Tim Clarke for
Dos, pictured from right to left in the
photograph.
The Spring Series 2017 will start in March
and all comers, not just SAMM members,
are welcome. For information have a look

Hacienda Riquelme Golfing Away Day

On Friday 27th January the CGA are organising a golfing away day at Hacienda Riquelme, the first tee time will be 10.42am.
The price should be 37 with a buggy but
the CGA are sponsoring their members
by 7, thereby making the price 30 with
a buggy. Other golfers are welcome but
they will not get sponsorship. Enough tee
times have been booked for 40 golfers and
to date 37 of them have been taken up.
On our return to Camposol we will be having a 3 course meal at the Trevi Bar with a
glass of wine for 12, to which non-playing
golfing partners are more than welcome.

Costa Clida Chronicle Sales 619 199 407

Costa Clida Chronicle - January 2017

According to the National Institute of

Statistics, home sales in Spain grew
by 7% in October, compared to the
same period of the previous year.
Although that is a respectable figure
post financial crisis, it is well below
the average growth for the first and
second quarters of 2016, where in
some regions of Spain growth was
well into double figures.
The majority of the slowdown has
been attributed to the cooling down of
the overseas buyers market and of
course, linked to the Brexit decision in
the middle of the year and due to the
uncertainty that has arisen across the
whole of the EU.
From our own experiences, there is
no reason to question these figures;
there has been a noticeable slowdown
in enquiries and footfall. From
experiencing prolific growth well into
the summer, we now find buyers
concerns regarding residency and
healthcare in Spain more prevalent.
In some cases potential buyers have
put their plans on the back burner
until there is more clarity regarding
the major issues of movement and
reciprocal services.

Our politicians have not helped! There

has been much procrastination on all
sides regarding the plight of foreign
residents in Europe; who will be
allowed to stay and who will have to go
back to their home country? Instead
of providing assurances and steadying
the ship, we see the question kicked
around like a political football.
No doubt there will be more of this to
come in the New Year as the rhetoric
is ramped up on both sides prior to
the Brexit negotiations in the spring.
Ultimately we will get a conclusion to
our questions and things will improve
again, so until that happens, we must
keep our heads down and carry on as
we always do.
We would like to take this opportunity
to wish everyone a Healthy and
Prosperous New Year.

Although the complete set of statistics

for annual property sales in 2016
will not be available until Feb/March
2017, we can tell by the trends in
the 3rd quarter and Octobers figures
that there has been a distinct slowing
down of the market since June 2016.
