Surya:
Part 1
Given below are the qualities of Surya when it occupies different Rasis. It is not necessary that
all the qualities manifest in the natives life through his own personality and experiences, but
they certainly influence all the factors connected with Surya. If Surya is the Lagnesha, occupies
the lagna or conjoins the lagnesha, then these qualities are highly prominent in the natives
personality or direct experiences. Else, they are prominent in the areas affected by Surya. So, if
Surya is the 9th lord, occupies the 9th or conjoins the 9th lord, then these qualities can be seen in
the natives father, or his faith and belief system. If Surya is the 2nd house or occupies the 2nd
house, or conjoined with the 2nd lord, these can be seen in some member of the family, the
matters connected with savings of wealth, and the quality of speech.
Thus also some of these traits can be seen on the natives personality, it is not necessarily the
case always. The impact on the personality and direct experiences in the life can only be seen
when:
1. Surya is the atmakaraka or conjoins the atmakaraka.
2. Surya is the strongest graha in the horoscopes in shadbala
3. Surya is in Vargottama i.e., in the same Rasi and Navamsa
4. Surya is the Lagnesha, conjoins the Lagnesha or occupy the lagna.
If Surya is not connected with the above factors, the influence on the nature and direct influences
of the native is considerably lower, but these influences can be seen elsewhere i.e., siblings,
parents, friends, uncles and other kinsmen who are under the influence of Surya.
Irrespective of which Bhava Surya is placed, its impact is usually seen in the following areas of
life:
1. Appearance and physical features
2. Nature, likes and dislikes, conduct
3. access to wealth and resources
4. Natural talents and inclinations, hobbies etc.
indicate talent pertaining to the Rasi lord, which in this case is playing musical
instruments, dancing etc. The danger from water is indicated because of Suryas conflict
with a watery graha in the 2nd house of zodiac, which is also one of the natural maraka
bhavas.
3. Mithuna: Scholar Surya: Scholar, sweet speech, affectionate particularly to ones
children, good conduct, adept in shastras, exceedingly affluent, charitable, talented,
astrologer, mediocre in appearance, two mothers, fortunate, modest. Notes: Budha is
friendly towards Surya and so is Mithuna Rasi, however, Surya is inimical towards this
Rasi as it falls in a Upachaya from Suryas Mulatrikona. However, Surya is favourable
towards learning and scholarship as Surya is the source of all knowledge, which indicates
that this position of Surya blesses the native with learning and scholarship. Budha is the
karaka for speech, indicating sweetness in speech. Budha also bestows its nature of
innocence and childishness on Surya, indicating one who is modest, highly talented,
friendly, jovial, mirthful, good-conduct and is affectionate towards own children.
Childbirth is also governed by Surya, being the 5th lord. Budha governs our learning
abilities and also the books. This indicate someone who is inclined towards various forms
of learning, books, especially the scriptures. Budha is the karaka for wealth and Surya the
karaka for all resources. This combination indicate affluence. There is abundance
indicated by this alignment of Surya indicating a charitable disposition. Budha governs
over mathematics and other mathematical sciences i.e., astrology and astronomy, that is
bestowed upon the native. Budhas appearance is mediocre as indicated by this position
of Surya. It is not known why two mothers are indicated.
4. Karka: Virtuous Surya: Unsteady mind, Royal qualities, hate own kinsmen and
paternal relations, not so beautiful wife, pleasant appearance, kapha and pitta troubles,
fatigued due to hard-work, fond of intoxicants, virtuous, honourable, eloquent,
geographer, knowledge of atmosphere or space, very steady in actions. Notes: Chandra
and Surya are mutual friend and represent the mother and father in a zodiac. Chandra is
the karaka for mind, which get agitated due to high brilliance of Suryacausing
unsteadiness of the mind. Both Chandra and Surya are the Royal grahas indicating
someone having royal qualities. Chandra indicate family and kinsmen due to its Jala
Tattva, and vitiation of the jala element by Surya cause hatred towards kinsmen. Wife and
sisters are also indicated by Jala grahas and jala tattvas in general, whose vitiation by
Suryas agni indicate wife is not of pleasant appearance. The native is of pleasant
appearance as Chandra is very beautiful (and seductive). The vitiation of Jala tattva by
the Agni tattva of Surya indicate one having Kapha and Pitta troubles. Chandra being Jala
tattva represents comforts and relaxation, which is when vitiated by Suryas agni indicate
fatigue from hard-work. Chandra is indicate soma-rasa, which makes one exhilarated.
Suryas occupation of this Rasi indicate one who is seeking pleasure out of intoxicants
such as alcohol. Chandra indicate movement and Karka rasi is also a Chara Rasi,
indicating that the native is fond of travelling especially for the purpose of visiting the
world. The alignment of two Sattva grahas Surya and Chandra and the royal grahas
indicate dignity, great virtues, honour, determination and steadiness in action, i.e., they
dont finish work unfinished. Chandra blesses the native with eloquence and also the
knowledge of environment, atmosphere and space, all governed by her.
5. Simha: Royal Surya: Destroy enemies, short-tempered, restless, notable acts, wander in
forests, hills and fortresses, enthusiastic, valorous, bright appearance, meat eater,
formidable, physically strong and powerful, talkative, kingly, wealthy, famous. Notes: In
Simha, in Svarasi, Surya is a royal graha i.e., a king sitting in his kingdom and throne.
This makes the native highly valorous but short-tempered and restless. He is highly
dignified and is known for notable and noble acts. There is a tendency towards adventure,
indicating that the native is fond of hunting and trekking etc. and move around in forests
and forts. He is full of energy and passion, of bright appearance and splendour like a
king. He is fond of eating meats as many warrior tribes do, fond of hunting and adventure
sports. Like a lion, he is physically strong, and is of commanding nature. He is talkative
due to influence of strong Agni, but his speech is commanding. His demeanour is kingly
and royal. He is wealthy and famous.
6. Kanya: Effeminate Surya: Effeminate body, physically weak, scholarly, skilful in
Vedas, writer, render service to gods and elders, expert in repairs of vehicles, singing,
playing instruments, speak softly and kindly. Notes: Kanya is represented by a young
maiden before the stage of puberty, meaning that Shukra is not active in their life yet.
Thus it is the purest Rasi in a horoscope. The effeminate body (and nature) is indicated by
the rasi itself. The native could be physically weak as indicated by Rasi symbol i.e.,
young maiden. This Rasi is greatly friendly towards Surya and Surya is also a good friend
towards this Rasi, hence this should be treated as a good placement for Surya. The
influence of Budha is highly visible, making the native scholarly and skilful in the Vedas
and the Shastras (spiritual scriptures). The native is fond of playing musical instruments,
speak softly and kindly etc. He displays talent in writing and is a respectful towards gods,
brahmins and scholars. He displays exceptional talent in repairing skills of vehicles,
especially the fast moving ones.
Part 2
1. Tula: The Fallen Surya: Frustration, destruction, heavy expenditure, exiled, wicked,
mean-minded, devoid of affection, livelihood from selling gold and other metals, jealous,
service-minded, co-habit with others wives, dirty habits, unclean, incur royal contempt,
shameless. Notes: Tula is the Neecha Rasi of Surya, indicating negative qualities of the
graha. Here, all that Surya stands for, takes a beating. This is the 3rd Rasi from Suryas
mulatrikona indicating Surya is inimical to this Rasi. And, from Shukras mulatrikona,
Surya owns the 11th Rasi indicating that Shukra is also inimical towards Surya.
Compared to Vrshabha Rasi, this is even more negative placement, as Surya attains
Neecha here. The negative qualities of Surya indicated are, Frustration, destruction,
heavy expenditure, exiled, wicked, jealous and mean minded. The affiliation of Jala
Tattva of Shukra indicates lack of affection and compassion. Suryas sway on livelihood
matters indicate livelihood from selling gold and other metals. The native lacks the
capacity to stand independently for which Surya is known, thus making him serviceminded
2. Vrschika: The Irascible Surya: Lust for war, unrighteous, liar, dull witted, attached to
undignified women, undignified/ short-lived spouse, cruel, irascible, rash, miserly, fond
of promoting quarrels, troubled by weapons, fire and poison, unfortunate with regards to
parents. Notes: Vrschika is the 8th Rasi of the zodiac, governed by Mangal and Ketu and
is a highly hostile and secretive Rasi. This is not a positive Rasi for almost all the Grahas.
Influence of Mangal indicate lust for war, however the war is not dignified as it is in
Mesha. There is a chance that the native hits the adversary below the belt. Although
Surya and Mangal are mutual friend, this is an uncomfortable Rasi for Surya, indicating
curtailment of its positive qualities and manifestation of negative qualities i.e., Lie, dullwittedness, irascible temper, rashness, one fond of promoting quarrels. The native is
troubled by the indications of Surya and Mangal i.e., weapons, fire. The rasi symbol of
Scorpion indicate troubles from poison. This Rasi is the fall of Chandra, the
representation of the mother and female force, representing that the native will not derive
affection from mother and other ladies, and also the wife is of low moral character, or if
she is of good character, she is short-lived. Similarly Suryas lack of comfort in this Rasi
indicate negative experiences with regards to father as well. Overall the native is less
fortunate with regards to both parents.
3. Dhanu: The Advisor Surya: Wealthy, dear to the king, learned, respect gods and
Brahmins, skilful in training of use of weapons, breeding of elephants, honourable,
peaceful, handsome physique, helpful to kinsmen, energetic. Notes: Both the Rasis of
Guru is highly positive for Surya, however, Dhanu is even more positive among them due
to alignment of their Tattvas and being in a trikona from Suryas Mulatrikona. This a
Sattva and Purusha Rasi and the masculine and assertive qualities of Guru is noted in
Suryas nature. Guru being the Dhana Karaka and Surya being the karaka for all
resources, the native is blessed with abundant wealth. He is excellent in various strategic
matters, thanks to Gurus foresight and Suryas enthusiasm. He gets recognition among
the influential people. The native is humble and respects, gods, brahmins and scholars.
The influence of the Rasi symbol i.e., bow, arrow, archery etc. on Surya indicate that the
native is interested in learning these skills. Dhanu is a half pashu rasi (animal sign) in the
2nd half, so if Surya falls in this part, the native is fond of breeding of animals such as
horses and elephants, that are traditionally used in battles. Overall, all good qualities of
Surya are manifested in this Rasi making the native honourable, peaceful, handsome,
helpful to kinsmen, and full of energy and enthusiasm.
4. Makara: The Vicious Surya: Vicious, attached to undignified women, greedy, mean
jobs, successful in undertaking, timid, devoid of kinsmen, losses due to conflict with
kinsmen, fickle-minded, wandering, weak, voracious eater. Notes: Shani Rasis indicate
the worst placement of Surya, next to Tula, its fall. Makara and Kumbha are both highly
inimical towards Surya, and Surya is also inimical towards the Rasi. This makes the field
ready for great conflict and stress. Among the two Makara is worst as it falls in the 6th
house of enemies and weaknesses from Suryas Mulatrikona. Here the negative qualities
of Surya are manifested, indicating one who is Vicious, greedy, timid, fickle-minded and
Weak. Being a Chara Rasi, it indicates wandering disposition, without purpose or any
gains. Agni indicate libido and Shani dirt. The native has dirtiness in the matters of sex
and his relationship with women. From a livelihood perspective, it indicates mean jobs
i.e., those of lowly nature, and undignified. In this Rasi, Suryas Agni is strong and
blazing, giving a strong metabolism, making the person a voracious eater. However,
again the eating habits are unhealthy. The person is an outcaste, i.e., abandoned by own
kinsmen.
5. Kumbha: The Unclean Surya: Heart diseases, physically strong and powerful, very
short-tempered, fortunate through other housewives, hatred towards learned, steady in
activities, miserable, less wealth, fraudulent, not firm in friendship, unclean body,
miserly. Notes: This is another Rasi where Suryas negative qualities are manifested. This
is the 7th Rasi from Suryas Mulatrikona, hence Surya is inimical to this Rasi, so does the
Rasi towards Surya. Surya governs the Heart and position in this Rasi cause diseases of
the heart (7th house, Ref: Maharishi Jaimini). Unlike Makara which cause physical
weakness (6H impact), this Rasi does not diminish that aspect of Surya, making the
person physically strong and powerful. The native is always eager for war and is of
highly irritable disposition. His sexual habits are questionable, as he is inclined towards
the company of married women, due to 7H influence of Shani. He harbours hatred
towards gods, brahmins, scholars and elders and is not committed in friendship, but
unlike Makara, he is abandoned. The negative qualities of Surya indicate misery,
diminished access to wealth and resources, miserliness and influence of Shani causes him
to be unclean and of dirty habits. The livelihood from fraudulent sources are indicated,
but he is steady in activities i.e., complete work at hand; thanks to Shanis hardworking
quality.
6. Meena: The Happy Surya: Friendly, hoarding tendency, fond of women, happy,
learned, destroy enemies, wealthy, endowed with wife, sons and servants, wealth through
sea voyages and trade, eloquent, liar, diseases in private parts, many co-born. Notes: This
is another Rasi of Guru, where positive qualities of Surya is manifested. However, there
is bound to be differences, as unlike Dhanu, it is a Jala Rasi, with strong feminine
characteristics, and is the 12th Rasi of the zodiac. From Suryas Mulatrikona, it is the 8th
Rasi, indicating some negative characteristics. Surya in this Rasi indicate one who is
friendly, learned and scholarly, valorous and destroy enemies, wealthy, blessed with a
good family, wife, children and servants and many siblings. However, the strong
influence of Jala Tattva (relationships) indicate one who is fond of company of women.
This Rasi supports Venusian qualities of Shukra, being its Uccha Rasi. This bestows
eloquence on Surya. The 8th Rasi from Suryas Mulatrikona indicate insecurity with
regards to access of resources, causing the native to hoard resources, making him a liar or
opportunistic and causes diseases in private parts. Since Surya influences over the
sources of livelihood, in this Rasi, it indicates gain through sea voyages and international
trade. This is because Meena Rasi indicate a ocean, and uccha Shukra indicate
international trade.
Part 3
The qualities of a Graha undergoes significant modification depending on the aspect of other
Grahas. In general aspect of Shubha Grahas support manifestation of positive qualities of a
Grahas, while the aspect of Krura Grahas suppress the positive qualities and manifest the
negative qualities. In addition, the aspect of naisargika mitra helps in fulfilling the goals of a
graha,, while those of Shatru graha puts obstacles and hinder the pursuit of achievement of the
goals.
When there is an aspect of a graha on the Graha occupying a Rasi, then the base results of the
Rasi placement should be superimposed with the aspect results to conclude the final results. For
instance, we observe that Suryas position Shanis Rasi is not at all positive, manifesting the
qualities of Viciousness in Makara and Uncleanliness in Kumbha. However, when Such Surya is
aspected by Guru, it becomes Righteous, wise, honour gods and brahmins, widely famous and of
superior intelligence. Thus, the aspect of the Grahas should be evaluated before concluding the
results of Grahas Rasi placement.
Chandras Drsti
Chandra is Suryas friend, but is unsteady in nature due to changes in its phases on a continual
basis. It is highly positive like Guru when it is Full and is negative like Shani when its New. In
general waxing Chandra is known for increase in positivity while that of waning Chandra is
known for increase in negativity.
Chandra can aspect Surya with Purna Drsti, only when it is a Full Moon. However, from other
places Chandra can also aspect Surya with partial drsti. The partial drsti are 3 pada, Chaturasra
Drsti (4/8), 2 pada Kona Drsti (5/9) and 1 pada upachaya Drsti (3/10). Like all grahas Chandra
cant aspect the 212 and 611 from where it is placed.
Chandras aspect is positive on Surya in Guru, Mangal and Suryas own Rasi and Chandras
Rasi. In Shukras rasi it increases lust, in Budhas rasi it increases physical discomfort and
enmity and in Shanis Rasi, it causes losses due to women.
1. Mangals Rasi: Delicate physique, charitable, many servants, charming, dear to women.
2. Shukras Rasi: Soft spoken, many relationships, addicted to undignified women,
livelihood through water.
3. Budhas Rasi: Troubled by enemies and kinsmen, distressed due to foreign travel,
wailing.
4. Chandras Rasi: Cruel, equal to king, livelihood through water.
5. Svarasi: Scholar, good wife, dear to the king, kapha disorder.
6. Gurus Rasi: Handsome, eloquent, wisdom, wealth and sons, equal to king, devoid of
misery.
7. Shanis Rasi: Cunning, lose wealth and happiness on account of befriending females.
Mangals Drsti
Mangal is a friend of Surya but it is of Tamas Guna and of fiery nature. It aggravates Suryas fire
by its aspect. Mangal can aspect Surya with Purna Drsti from 3 places i.e., when it occupies 6th,
7th and 10th from Surya. Its aspect on Suryas makes Surya chivalrous and prone to battles.
Results of Mangals aspect are positive when Surya occupies the Rasi of Mangal, Shukra, Surya
and Guru. They are negative when Surya occupies the Rasi of Budha, Chandra and Shani. The
results are extremely positive when Surya occupies Gurus Rasi and extremely negative when
Surya occupies Shanis Rasi.
1. Mangals Rasi: Courage in battle, cruel, good eye-sight, ruddy complexion, glorious,
powerful.
2. Shukras Rasi: Brave, fond of battles, bright appearance, wealth and fame through
valour, deformed limbs.
3. Budhas Rasi: Fear from enemies, litigation, defeat in battle, poverty, bashful.
4. Chandras Rasi: Pulmonary consumption, fistula in the anus or genitals, dejected with
kinsmen, mudslinger.
5. Svarasi: Interested in others wives, courageous, valorous, revolutionary, formidable,
chief.
6. Gurus Rasi: Famous through battle, clarity of speech, money, comfort, short-tempered.
7. Shanis Rasi: Troubled by diseases and enemies, wounded by weapons, deformed limbs.
Budhas Drsti
Budha is the karaka for learning and knowledge and is friendly towards Surya. It is Shubha
graha, hence, capable of removing negative traits due to Suryas Rasi positions.
Results of Budhas aspect are positive when Surya occupies the Rasi of Shukra, Budha, Chandra,
Suryas own and Guru. They are negative when Surya occupies the Rasi of Mangal and Shani.
1. Mangals Rasi: Service minded, not wealthy, weak, grief, unclean body.
2. Shukras Rasi: Drawing, writing, poetry, singing, good physique.
3. Budhas Rasi: Equal to king, famous, company of kinsmen, free from enemies, eye
diseases.
4. Chandras Rasi: Scholar, dear to the king, skillful, destroy enemies.
5. Svarasi: Scholar, writer, gambler, wanderer, mean minded, great physical strength.
6. Gurus Rasi: Sweet speech, writing, literature, arts, assembly, journey, minerals.
7. Shanis Rasi: Brave, like an eunuch, steal others wealth, powerless limbs.
Gurus Drsti
Gurus Drsti is considered the best among all as it is capable of removing all poison and
negativity from a Grahas consciousness, they making them highly positive. Gurus Drsti on a
Graha (or other bodies such as Rasi, Bhava) is known to be highly benevolent and is called
Amrita Drsti (life giving nectar).
This Drsti on Surya bestow positive results arising out of Suryas placement in any Rasi. This is
true for Gurus aspect on other Grahas as well.
Guru is capable of fully aspecting a Graha (or other matters) from three places 5, 7, 9. From
few other places, guru is capable of aspecting through partial sights. Only when Guru occupies,
2, 3, 8, 12 from a Graha, it is incapable of aspecting it through any aspect. It is known that
Gurus even 1 pada drsti (4, 11 from the graha) is capable of removing much of poison, toxins
and negativity from the Grahas psyche, bestowing purity and sattva guna. It is unfortunate for
Grahas, Rasis and Bhavas falling in 212, 611 from Guru. However, the Bhavas 2 and 12 from
Guru are still protected to some extent due to their placement in Gurus vicinity, but 611 are
completely bereft of Gurus blessings.
1. Mangals Rasi: Wealthy, donate, minister, judge, influential.
2. Shukras Rasi: Many foes and friends, minister, beautiful eyes, glorious, charismatic
ruler.
3. Budhas Rasi: Knowledge of shastras, diplomat, travel to foreign countries, fierce,
bewildered.
4. Chandras Rasi: King or minister, army-chief, famous, learned in arts.
5. Svarasi: Construct temples, gardens and tanks, powerful, fond of solitude highly
intelligent.
6. Gurus Rasi: Be a King or honoured by the king, possess elephants and horses, wealthy,
always learning.
7. Shanis Rasi: Righteous, wise, patronise god, brahmins and guests, widely famous,
intelligent.
Shukras Drsti
Surya and Shukra are highly inimical towards each other. So Shukra although is a Saumya
Graha, its aspect on Surya is not positive. Shukra is capable of corrupting Suryas purity through
its lustful influences.
Results of Shukras aspect are positive when Surya occupies the Rasi of Shukra, Budha,
Chandra, and Guru. They are negative when Surya occupies the Rasi of Mangal, Suryas own
and Shani. In the mentioned signs, the morality of Surya takes a back seat under the influence of
Shukra.
Surya is spared from Shukras aspect when it occupies the 212, 611 from Shukra i.e., the blind
houses of Shukra. The blind houses are the mentioned houses, where a graha is incapable of
aspecting, hence their blindspots.
1. Mangals Rasi: Marry undignified women, many enemies, few kinsmen, poor, leprosy.
2. Shukras Rasi: King, minister, blessings of spouse, wealth and luxuries, wise, timid.
3. Budhas Rasi: Blessings of wealth, wife and children, less friends, free from sickness,
happy fickle minded.
4. Chandras Rasi: Subservient to spouse, money through wife, helpful to others, fierce in
battle, sweet speech.
5. Svarasi: Infamous, leprosy, unkind, shameless.
6. Gurus Rasi: Relationship with women of high morals, endowed with scents and
garlands, peaceful.
7. Shanis Rasi: Deal with conch, coral and ruby, wealth through prostitutes and females.
Shanis Drsti
Shani stands for uncleanliness, sorrows, miseries and lies on the negative side. On the positive
side it stands for many good qualities such as perseverance, hard-work, stamina, and high level
spirituality. However, the manifestation of Shanis energy depends on the spiritual consciousness
of the native.
Shani is the Son of Surya, but is highly inimical towards Surya. Surya is also highly inimical
towards Shani. Shani, in addition is highly Tamasic and is a Krura Graha. hence, its aspect on
Suryas cant be positive. It corrupts Suryas consciousness even when Surya occupies Gurus
Rasi. This is only possible by Shanis aspect.
Perhaps the only position which is spared is Suryas position in Budhas Rasi. This is because
Budhas innocence is the only remedy to Shanis craftiness. Also when Surya occupies Shanis
Rasi, Shanis aspect is not detrimental. This is because a graha aspecting its own Rasi is full of
positive qualities (sattva guna). In this positive, instead of causing weaknesses, Shani gives
strength and honour.
Shani is the karaka for weaknesses. Hence, when Shani aspects a graha, it manifests the inherent
weaknesses that arise out of Grahas Rasi placement, or intermingling Grahas vibrations with
that of the Rasi.
1. Mangals Rasi: Diseases, hard-working, dull-witted.
2. Shukras Rasi: Mean minded, indolent, aged partner, wicked, diseased.
3. Budhas Rasi: Many servants, anxious, many kinsmen, delighted, crafty.
4. Chandras Rasi: Vata and Kapha disorders, wicked, talebearer.
5. Svarasi: Creating obstacles, eunuch, cause grief to others.
6. Gurus Rasi: Unclean, eat others food, company of bad men, breed animals.
7. Shanis Rasi: Destroy enemies, honoured by the king.

help in improving the accuracy of horoscope delineation, as these positions influence the nature,
