Heavy horses help at Killerton

EXPERT LOCAL HORSE

loggers worked with
National Trust Rangers
to protect an Iron Age hill

fort on the Killerton estate,

near Exeter, as part of a
major parkland restoration
project.

The horses were used

to extract timber from the
historic site, known locally
as The Clump.

Old books in Exeter given new lease of life

The Clump refers to

the group of 150 year-old
beech trees planted on top
of the Iron Age hill fort
behind Killerton House,
when the 18th century
parkland was laid out by
John Veitch. In order to
protect both the hill fort
and the trees, its necessary
to selectively thin them
out.
The process is being
phased over the next
10 years. The work
prevents failing roots from
disturbing the archaeology
of the ancient hill fort and
gives the remaining and
strongest trees enough
room to create sturdier
foundations.
Heavy horses such as
Will Hamptons Comtois
and Ardenne breeds are
perfectly suited to working
on hilly and protected sites.
Will Hampton from
Dartmoor Horse Loggers
explained: The horses
offer an efficient, flexible
approach to timber
extraction. We marry
traditional woodland
management with modern
equipment such as pole
arches to ensure minimal
damage to sensitive sites
just like Killerton.

RARE BOOKS FROM

the citys library collection
are on display in a special
exhibition at the city
centre site until the end of
January.
Its to mark a new
conservation scheme
to restore the special
collection of rare and
unique books.
Joanne Cousins, senior
supervisor at the library,
has been granted 5,000
funding from Carnegie
Library Lab charity to
launch a new Adopt
a Book initiative. The
scheme will allow people
to adopt an item of their
choice and help fund its
restoration.
The special collections
archive at Exeter Library
consists of around 6,000
items dating from 1480
to 1900. The oldest is
an Incunable (a book
that was printed rather
than written before 1501
in Europe) written by a
Benedictine monk born in
Sicily in 1386. This book
dates back to 1480 and is
one of only 80 copies in
existence.
Another special edition
in the archive is English
Men of Letters: The Life of
Thomas Gray, by Edmund
Gosse. This book was the
only surviving book after
Exeter Library was heavily
bombed during the Blitz
of 1942. It was wrapped in
brown paper to protect it
from any further damage,
a state in which it has
remained ever since.

Joanne said: I have

worked at the library for
years, and these books
have always been there,
kept safely in the archive
so that their state doesnt
deteriorate any further.
I started to really pay
attention to the books and
how they ended up in
this room, and I felt that
is was a shame that they
werent able to be put on
display so that the people
of Devon could enjoy them
and get to know their
stories. Not only are there
some brilliant works of
literature, they all have
their own unique story
to tell and play a part in
Exeters history, she said.
Amongst the archived
items is The Works of
Oscar Wilde, published in

New York in 1909. This set

of volumes brings together
his fiction, poetry and
essays as well as his wellknown dramatic works,
and Exeter Librarys copy
is set number 447 of a print
run of just 1000.
The Infants Cabinet of
Birds, made and sold by
John Marshall in 1800,
is a beautiful wooden
box containing 28 handcoloured cards, designed
to teach Victorian children
about different species
of birds. The Cabinet has
been well loved over the
years and has sustained
damage to the wooden box
and the interior lining.
All of the items
require varying levels of
restoration, ranging from
repairing damaged

corners, lifting stains,

re-sewing bindings
and restoring damaged
spines. Some of the items,
including the Incunable,
will have bespoke boxes
made, to protect them
from any further damage
whilst maintaining this
vital part of Devons
heritage.

How often should you get

your teeth professionally
cleaned?
A Scale and Polish is
recommended every 6 months.
A professional clean helps to
remove plaque and tartar build
up to help maintain a healthy
mouth. Diamond Dentals scale
and polish from 35.
Do I need a regular check-up
even though I have no natural
teeth?
Yes, it is essential that you still
attend regular dental check-ups.
At these appointments we will
check the soft parts of your mouth
including the tongue and cheeks
for signs of infection, mouth
conditions or signs of mouth
cancer.

Is it important to replace missing

teeth?
Once a tooth has fallen out of
removed bone loss will occur in
the area. Not replacing a tooth
can affect the remaining
surrounding teeth causing
them to become loose or drift
into the gap. There are excellent
options available for replacing
missing teeth such as Dental
Bridges; Dental Implants and
Dentures.
What happens at a check-up?
At a check-up with Diamond
Dental, our Dentist will assess
your current oral health and
advise you on treatment and
care that is required to help
secure good oral health.
X-rays may be taken if applicable.
After your check-up if the
Dentist feels treatment is
needed we will send you a Oral
Health Report detailing all the
information about recommended
treatment.

Much of the reserve is inaccessible,

but the walk from car park to bird
hide is a hugely varied one. Several
paths cross the areas of Dawlish
Warren owned by Teignbridge

District Council. The area of land

owned by DWT includes the Warren
Golf Course where areas around the
greens are managed with wildlife in
mind.
The path along the top of the sand
dunes, with beach on one side and
golf course on the other, leads you
to the edge of a small bay -known
as The Bight - one of the last places
across the estuary to be covered by
each incoming tide.
Wading birds gather here, feeding
in the last available mud before the
incoming water drives them off. As
the sea rises, the birds edge closer to
the hide, giving the visitor excellent
views of dunlins, ringed plovers,
curlews and oystercatchers and
many other species.
The mudflats running alongside
the railway line towards Starcross
station are owned by DWT, meaning
these daily feeding grounds for
thousands of birds are protected for
the future.

Meet Bat Dog!

SOMETIMES WHEN YOUR
first career doesnt work
out you have to retrain.
Thats what happened to
black Labrador Ozzie.
He was a failed gun
dog. He was afraid of loud
bangs - which can be a bit
of a handicap in that line of
work! But he was trained
up as part of a team of six
sniffer dogs working on an
Exeter University research
project into bat deaths
caused by wind turbines.
Dr Fiona Mathews, who
led the research, said:
Dogs have the most
amazing sense of smell and
without them wed never
have been able to do our
research. We were looking
for bats which are tiny and
brown in really difficult
habitat.
Hundreds of bats are
killed every year by wind
turbines. The researchers
looked at 29 windfarms
across the country and
found that 194 bats were

killed every month. But

they warn the actual total
is far higher.
Ozzie and the other dogs
were specially trained by a
former police dog handler.
None of our dogs
are average pets. They
all have a really high
motivation to chase balls
over and over again. Its
enough to drive their
owners potty! she said.
The sniffer dogs were
able to locate dead
bats under the turbines
far better than using
traditional survey
methods.
The dogs are rewarded
through play and they
need to want to play the
same game over and over
again for a whole day.
Most dogs are able to
find a scent with a bit of
training. What separates
out a search dog is the
overwhelming drive they
have to do it! Fiona
explained.

Happy New Year

to all Dog Lovers!

A warm welcome awaits you at St Mary in the Willows

Dog Hotel together with lots of T.L.C. for your Dogs...

The researchers say that

simple measures like
turning off turbines at
night, at peak times for
bats, could save many bat
lives. But that would mean
paying operators higher
tariffs for the electricity
they produce.
Fiona says bats may
switch off their sonar
at the height of turbines
because they are not used
to encountering objects
at that altitude. They could
also be attracted to insects
flying around the blades.
The main casualties
are two common species

of bats: the Common

Pipstrelle and Soprano
Pipistrelle. Bodies of
the Noctule, one of the
larger European bat
species, which sometimes
come out before sunset
to feed on moths,
beetles and other large
flying insects, were also
found.
Ozzie is now retired
and very much part of
the family of fellow
researcher Suzanne
Richardson in Lancashire
while another of the
search dogs Charlie Brown
lives with Fiona.

16-25 years old enrolled on the
programme which helps young
people that are not in education,
employment or training to gain
valuable work, life and communication
skills.
Young people go on an incredible
journey of self discovery during the
programme said Karen Jones from
Active Devon, in charge of organising
the programme in Devon. If past
experience is anything to go by, we have
equipped most if not all of these young
people with the confidence, skills and
self-respect to move straight into the
world of work
Armed with a variety of shears,
rakes and forks, they discovered
how rewarding a bit of old fashioned
legwork can be.
The programme has a good track

suggesting that five months
after completing the course,
70% of the young people in the
programme will be in further

Rhino Auction

THE FORBES BARBER SHOP

in Countess Wear celebrates its
twentieth anniversary this month.
But besides cutting hair theyve
developed an interesting sideline
in cats!
Steve is a master barber working
with two full-time barbers,
a part-time barber and an
apprentice. With wife Jayne
doing all the backroom admin
they make a great team.
But theyve also developed a
passion for the cats of the Greek
Island of Kefalonia where they
have a holiday home.
During the summer of 2015 a
village cat had five kittens on the
patio. They looked after them and
they remained in the garden. With
the assistance of the neutering plan
run by the Kefalonia Animal Trust
(Kats) they hoped to have them
neutered.

Although they managed

to catch two females, two
more females missed the
vet and became pregnant
immediately, producing even
more kittens - seven and
four!
Looking after so many
cats runs up a huge bill
what with food and various
essential treatments. So
theyve been raising money
in their barbershop for their
new-found feline family and
many others like them on the
island.
We know that our cat
family are really just a drop in the
Ionian sea. There are hundreds
of cats and dogs that Kats work
tirelessly to get neutered, Jayne
explained.
From our own experience you
see from a failed attempt to get

two females neutered how quickly

a population of cats can get out of
control.
I dont like to use the word feral
for the cats as I know that if they are
looked after when they are born they
are actually loving and excellent at
keeping the wildlife in check.

THE GREAT BIG RHINO PROJECT ENDED WITH A

successful charity auction that brought in 123,000.
The summer-long project, organised by Paignton Zoo,
saw a free public art trail of 40 life-size painted rhinos
dotted around Exeter and the English Riviera. Thousands
of people spent the summer searching out the dazzling
artworks.
Now, 39 of the rhinos have been auctioned to raise
money for rhino conservation.
The highlight of the evening came when a bidding war
broke out over Hulk-O-Rhino, painted by Jenny Leonard
and sponsored by Inter-Line Building Supplies. This
eventually sold for 13,500 ten times the price of some of
the other rhinos.
The final figure for the project surplus will be known
once costs are taken into account. In 2013, the Great
Gorillas Project made a surplus of 30,000.

This year the Park

Authority organised
an appeal to buy 150
dormouse boxes at three
woodland sites in the
National Park.
Philip Kiberd, funding
officer, said: We already
have some dormouse boxes
on Exmoor and know that
they are being used, but
over the years they become
damp and we needed to
replace them and put up
many more.
Dormice are one of the
worlds most ancient
mammals and their
numbers have halved in the
UK over the past century.
Maintaining good
dormouse population is
particularly important as
they are an indicator of the
health of the environment
in which they live. They
are omnivorous - eating

insects, flowers, nectar,

berries and nuts, but they
need a good source of food
from April to October.
This means if they are
doing well the woodland
is in a good condition for
many other creatures, but
when numbers decrease
it suggests a lack of food
that will also affect other
animals.
The boxes also provide
shelter and safe nest sites
for summer breeding. Most
mice have regular broods,
but dormice (not actually a
mouse, despite the name)
live much longer, around 5
years, have smaller broods
and usually only one a
year. A pair of dormice will
usually have a brood of
4 - 6 of which maybe only
one or two will survive
their first year to breed
themselves, making the
population very vulnerable.

THE LOSS OF THE ROYAL CLARENCE HOTEL

to fire, brings to an end 250 years of hospitality
for visitors to the city. Built by William Mackworth
Praed in 1769 as the Assembly Rooms, it replaced
the Rummer Tavern. Within a year, it reopened as
Englands first hotel, an imported word used by
Pierre Berlon, the French proprietor, for the first time
in England. After trading as The Hotel for many
years, it became the Royal Clarence Hotel after the
Duchess of Clarence, stayed there in July 1827.

Quarry reopens for Cathedral stone

A QUARRY NEAR SIDMOUTH HAS BEEN REOPENED
to supply stone for the restoration of Exeter Cathedral.

During the age of

the stagecoach, the
Royal Clarence offered
its clientele the Royal
Bath and the London
Mail services. After a
particularly frightening
accident, in which a
Clarence bound coach ran
amok across the Close,
after clipping the entrance
of Broadgate, the city
decided to demolish the
old gate.

Famous visitors included

Admiral Nelson after
he received the freedom
of the city in 1801, Franz
Listz in 1840, who gave
two piano recitals, Thomas
Hardy in 1915, and Clark
Gable and Gary Cooper
during the war.
In 1916, the Clarence
opened the first cocktail
bar, the Zodiac Bar - later,
during 1939, such exotic
drinks as Tugboat Annie,

the Corpse Reviver and

Gloom Chaser, were
invented by Mr Ginger
Wood, to cheer up
Exonians heading into the
Second World War.
The Exeter Bank, on the
corner, also opened in
1769. It became the first
Dellers Cafe in Exeter in
1906. On the opposite side,
the Well House Tavern
opened in 1984, as part of
the Clarence.

Veitchs, the nursery and

seed merchant, occupied
the premises up to the
1980s.
The loss of the Clarence
in this most iconic corner
of the Close is like a
missing tooth from a
perfect mouth. However,
like the city after the
blitz, the Clarence will
rise Phoenix-like from the
ashes.
David Cornforth
Exeter Memories

The small quarry or delf is located at Dunscombe

Manor Caravan Park just outside Salcombe Regis.
Salcombe stone was used to build most of the cathedral
and was extracted from several sites in that area. It was
originally transported by sea to Topsham for transfer to
barges for the last part of the journey.
The restoration of the building is expected to take ten
years and requires a new supply of stone, so the site
which closed in 1986 is being reopened.
Site manager Craig Morgan said: We are very excited
to assist Exeter Cathedral. This is one of the four original
stones used in the medieval buildings construction
and we understand it is very important to maintain
continuity of construction and renovation material.

Roald Dahls Twits

come to Exeter
ROALD DAHLS THE TWITS TELLS THE TALE OF
the most spiteful and revolting couple you could ever
hope to meet.
Mr Twit has a very hairy face. His beard is spiky and
smelly. It also contains cornflakes, sardines and even
some stilton.
Mrs Twit is equally as foul and she hates Mr Twit just
as much as Mr Twit hates her.
They spend their days playing wicked tricks on
each other and mistreating Muggle-Wump monkeys.
But not for much longer because the monkeys have a
cunning plan to teach those terrible twits a lesson.
The Twits is coming to Exeter Northcott Theatre from
Mon 27th Feb Sat 4th March.

EXETER PHOENIXS NEW

by a free insect tasting
workshop courtesy of
Cornwall Edible Insects.

Cygnet Season starters

CYGNET THEATRES NEW YEAR BEGINS ON
10th January with a World Premiere!
Untold Theatre will conjure up The Ghosts of
Mr Dickens in a new play by Avril Silk & Martin
Levinson, the team that brought Beyond Expectations
and The Tempest. Aboard the SS Cuba, bound for
America in 1867, Charles Dickens is plagued with
guilt-ridden visions and visitors from the spirit world.
Reality blurs into fiction as he is compelled to face
his past.
Another upcoming highlight at the Exeter venue is
Sun and Moon Theatre returning with Twelfth Night
on 17th February set in Christmas 1916.

THERES SOME GREAT MUSIC LINED UP

for the monthly sessions at the Toorak Hotel
in Torquay.
On Wednesday 25th January the Annika
Skough Quartet are playing a range of
jazz standards and contemporary tunes.
Then on Wednesday 22nd February
theres the gypsy jazz and swing ensemble
La Vie en Rose (pictured above).
Tickets are 7/6 and the music starts at
8.30pm.

Silence

THE NEW YEAR AT THE MOVIES

kicks off with Assassins Creed
(Jan 1) starring Michael Fassbender
and Jeremy Irons. This action
adventure fantasy is based on the
hugely popular games series.
Slightly more up-market is
A Monster Calls (Jan 1) starring
Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver,
and Liam Neeson. This beautiful
and thoughtful fantasy tells the story
of a boy who seeks help from a tree
monster to cope with his mothers
terminal illness.
A drama set in the 17th century
about two Jesuit priests who face
persecution when they travel to
Japan doesnt sound like the most
riveting of movies but when I tell
you Silence (Jan 1) is directed by
the great Martin Scorsese then
that should be all you need as
recommendation. Liam Neeson
and Andrew Garfield star. This is
Scorseses first feature film since
2013s The Wolf Of Wall Street.
The Bye Bye Man (Jan 13) starring
Carrie-Anne Moss and Faye
Dunaway is a disturbing horror
thriller about a mysterious figure
who turns out to be the root cause
of the evil behind mans most
unspeakable acts.
In Underworld: Blood Wars (Jan 13)
starring Kate Beckinsale and Charles
Dance, vampires and werewolves
return to wage war in the latest
installment of the blockbuster horror
franchise. Fangs, claws, blood and
leather take centre stage and we can
no doubt expect more where that
came from in a couple of years time
when the inevitable next installment
arrives.
And theres another sequel opening
on Jan 19 when Vin Diesel and
Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles
in xXx3: The Return Of Xander Cage
Diesel delivers everything youd
expect as the extreme athlete turned
government operative Xander Cage.
M. Night Shyamalan made a name
for himself with the classic Sixth
Sense but his career went off the rails
for a few years with a number of
duds. Thankfully his latest film Split
(Jan 20) sees a real return to form,
largely thanks to James McAvoys
incredible performance as a man
with 24 different split personalities.
Genuine edge of the seat stuff.
Mel Gibsons career trajectory
seems to have taken a similar path to
Clint Eastwoods, i.e. he started out
as a heartthrob actor in action roles,
then progressed to more serious

acting roles and now has moved

on to directing some very classy
movies. His latest Hacksaw Ridge
(Jan 27) starring Andrew Garfield
and Hugo Weaving is based on the
true story of a soldier in World War 2
who refused to kill people.
Sing (Jan 27) featuring the
voices of, among others, Matthew
McConaughey and Reese
Witherspoon, is an animated feature
about a Koala bear presiding over a
theatre that has fallen on hard times.
Paul W. S. Andersons hugely
successful franchise based on the hit
horror video game franchise reaches
its finale with Resident Evil 6
(Feb 3) starring Milla Jovocich and
Ruby Rose. And fans will be glad to
hear it takes us back to where it all
started Raccoon City.
And theres yet another horror
sequel opening on February 3. Rings
stars Aimee Teegarden and Vincent
DOnofrio and of course features
the return of the video that kills you
seven days after you watch it.
When Fifty Shades Of Grey took
the literary world by storm a film
adaptation was inevitable and now
we have the sequel to that movie
Fifty Shades Darker (Feb 10) starring
Jamie Dornan and Dakota John.
While Christian wrestles with his
inner demons, Anastasia must
confront the anger and envy of the
women who came before her.

The Lego Movie proved to be such a

hit that a sequel was inevitable and
so now we have The Lego Batman
Movie (Feb 10) in which Batman
and assorted familiar villains who
popped up in the first film now get
a movie all to themselves. Bruce
Wayne must not only deal with the
criminals of Gotham City but also
the responsibility of raising a boy he
adopted.
The Great Wall (Feb 17) starring
Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe is
a fantasy mystery set around the
building of the Great Wall of China.
The films premise is that the wall
was actually built to protect the
people from terrifying monsters that
lurked on the other side. East meets
West in a spectacular fashion.
God Particle (Feb 24) starring Gugu
Mbatha-Raw and Daniel Bruhl is a
horror sci fi movie in which a team
of astronauts aboard a space station
must fight for their survival when
they encounter something not of this
earth (sounds familiar). The film is
actually the third film in J.J. Abrams
Cloverfield series.
And finally Patriots Day (Feb 24)
starring Melissa Benoist and Mark
Wahlberg is a thought provoking
drama based on the events leading
up to the 2013 Boston Marathon
bombing and its aftermath.

Dawlish group join Coast Path Challenge

MEMBERS OF THE DAWLISH WALKING FOR HEALTH
group called Walk This Way, completed a major challenge
by walking 1,260 miles between them, the equivalent of
twice the length of the South West Coast Path.
It was part of the South West Coast Path Challenge,
a charity event to raise funds for improving the route,
which is led by the South West Coast Path Association in
partnership with the National Trust.
The Path is so fantastic for us in Dawlish, explained
Nigel Rhys, one of the walk leaders. Whether you want
a short stroll along the sea front or a big circular hike
into the hills, the path along the coast makes it all
possible. Dawlish is a brilliant destination for walking
because of it.
The group completed the route from Dawlish to
Teignmouth and in addition, 40 members of the group
went on to walk parts of the Dorset coastline.

provides a fascinating glimpse
into the world of 4th-century
Roman Britain.

OLDER PEOPLE IN EXETER

who wouldnt normally take part in
physical activity have been getting
active thanks to a new initiative.
A number of residents aged
between 55 and 90 have been taking
part in weekly seated exercise
sessions at Shilhay sheltered
accommodation run by Exeter City
Council down near the Quay.
The initiative is a collaboration
between Active Devon and the
Council under the Get Active
Exeter scheme, which aims to make
Exeter the most physically active
place in the South West by 2018.

One participant said: We come

along because we need company we do get a bit lonely sometimes,
so its the company as well as the
exercise.
Instructor Diz Wright, said: For a
lot of them its the social side - the
exercise almost gets in the way
because its a nice meeting place for
the ladies to meet up and have a
good laugh!
The exercises are varied from week
to week and the participants are able
to choose the music to exercise to,
which generates lots of memories and
laughter.
