Foot Peg Maintenance

Front Pegs
Rear Pegs

General Comments
This job is not essential but good practice. If neglected
it could result in you not noticing a rust clip in the foot
peg that breaks while you are driving and then leads to
the foot peg falling off, which would not be good. This
job could be completed by simply pulling the pin out,
putting some multi-purpose grease on it and put it back

together. That might be all that is required if you are

going rusty. So here are the steps for a full tear down.

What you need before hand

A bicycle torque wrench capable of 4Nm
Torque wrench 10Nm
Socket HW3 and HW5
Spanner adapter 10mm
Cleaning Detergent
Multi-purpose grease
Copper grease (optional)
Spare E-Clips if you need to replace them
Steps
1. Re move the E-Clip at the bottom of the pin.

2. Remove the pin holding the foot peg to the
bike. For the left side of the motorcycle you
will also need to remove the gear leaver to get
access to the pin using HW5 socket.

5. Check the length of the bank angle indicator.
It should look like it does in the picture
above. If it is warn (you are a risky driver)
make sure it is longer than 5mm from its
base. Any shorter than this, replace it and
drive safer in future.

6. Once all parts are clean, reassemble the
main foot peg if you took it apart: place
copper grease on the threads and tighten the
screws to 4Nm using the HW3 socket and
the bank angle indicator to 10Nm of torque
using the 10mm wrench adaptor.

7. Line up the spring with the hole in the foot
peg mount.

2. Remove the E-Clip and unless it is in top condition
it is best you discard it for a new one. Then slide
out the pin holding the foot rest to the level.

8. Put some multipurpose grease on the peg
and push it back through the hole, it might
need a bit of a wiggle. Once in, put an e-clip
in the end of the pin to secure it.

9. Repeat on the other side and if removed

heat shield from the exhaust as well (using
HW5) to make access easier.

4. Clean each part with automotive detergent and

then carry out any further repair as needed. Of
particular note for these items; clean the thread of
the leaver and behind the lip of the foot peg
structure. Afterwards the parts should look almost
new.
