1 Background of the Thesis:

Earthquakes can cause great loss of life and property by destroying structures such as
buildings, bridges and dams on its way. The most destructive earthquakes are caused by
seismic waves that reach to the earth surface at areas where man-made structures are located.
For the safety of the buildings during earthquake shaking, the philosophy of strong column
weak beam has widely been accepted by the structural designers and the researchers. In this
seismic design concept, it is assumed that yielding of all beams in flexure will occur prior to
possible yielding of columns which is considered to be the preferable failure mode.
As our country is densely populated and shelter is one of the main problems our authority
faces. Thus, implementation of our project in such a crowded city like Dhaka is highly
beneficial to community. Because of high rise category of structure, earthquake resilient
building structure with seismic detailing is recommended to absorb energy induced by strong
earthquake shaking. So, it is our responsibility to make advanced design in order to achieve
desirable building strength against the earthquake load and therefore, increase our confidence
level against disastrous events
Advanced design can be achieved through the selection of an appropriate structure
configuration and the careful detailing of structural members, such as shear walls, beams, and
columns and beam-column connections. The main target in designing against seismic load is
to keep safe the structures to improve their safety provision.

1.3 Objectives of the Thesis :

To analyze the selected building plan.
To design the building structure considering all types of loads and show detailed structural
drawing of different structural elements

METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction:
Extended 3D analysis of Building System (ETABS) is an nonlinear analysis software
specially designed for building frame system. Dating back more than 30 years to the
original development of ETABS, structural analysis for buildings is easy and simple for
both lateral and gravity loads. In this chapter, a brief description about planning, modeling,
analysis and design of the fourteen storied residential building is provided.

3.2 Methodology:
Selection of the Architectural plan of the building.

Modeling of the building.

Analysis of the building.

Design of the building.

Detailed drawing of different structural elements.

4.1

Possible outcomes of Thesis:

a. This study has been carried out by both hand calculation and in ETABS. ETABS is
useful to analyze and design beam, column but it can not design slab and foundation.
Other software could be used and a comparative study could made with ETABS to
ascertain economic design.

b. Beam supported slab could be designed by direct design method.

ABSTRACT
This project report presents the analysis and design of a Ten-storied residential building
including Pile foundation at 33 Toyenbee circular road, Motijheel in Dhaka.
Structural design of a building is the responsibility of a civil engineer; because design life of a
building is mainly dependent upon the structural design. Engineers must keep in mind the
economic, aesthetic, safety and other aspects of any project. This study concentrates on
designing structural parts of a nine storied residential building on actual plan for the Dhaka zone.
A complete structural parts analysis and design of the building have been performed considering
gravity loads, Seismic loads & Wind loads. Gravity loads are considered for slab design. Gravity
loads and lateral loads are also considered for beam, column, and pile design. In this study, slab,
beam, column and pile have been designed by both hand calculation and using finite element
software ETABS.
From the architectural plan of the building the largest slab panel was selected for design of slab.
Beam is designed manually for the maximum moment and shear (from ETABS). Column is
designed manually by using the axial force and moment (from ETABS). Pile foundation is
also designed by considering the column axial force and moment that we have got from ETABS
analysis result.
The wind loads & earthquake affect the design of a high rise building frame to a great extent.
Through the analysis, it has been found that earthquake and wind loads have considerable
effects on beam and column design. In this analysis, all inputs those are required for the
design of building structure is successfully applied.
