BREATHING MEDITATION
Whenwehavesettleddowncomfortablyonourmeditationseatwe
beginbybecomingawareofthethoughtsanddistractionsthatare
arisinginourmind.Thenwegentlyturnourattentiontoourbreath,
lettingitsrhythmremainnormal.Aswebreatheoutweimagine
thatwearebreathingawayalldisturbingthoughtsanddistractions
intheformofblacksmokethatvanishesinspace.Aswebreathein
weimaginethatwearebreathinginalltheblessingsandinspiration

oftheholybeingsintheformofwhitelightthatentersourbody
andabsorbsintoourheart.Wemaintainthisvisualizationsinglepointedlywitheachinhalationandexhalationfortwenty-one
rounds,oruntilourmindhasbecomepeacefulandalert.Ifwe
concentrateonourbreathinginthisway,negativethoughtsand
distractionswilltemporarilydisappearbecausewecannot
concentrateonmorethanoneobjectatatime.Attheconclusionof
ourbreathingmeditationweshouldthink`NowIhavereceivedthe
blessingsandinspirationofalltheholybeings.Atthisstageour
mindislikeacleanwhiteclothwhichwecannowcolourwitha
virtuousmotivationsuchascompassionorbodhichitta.
