Students Work to Find Ways to Drill for Water

on Mars
Teams from eight universities have taken up NASA's challenge to solve a Mars exploration
dilemma how to drill into large ice deposits and unearth water.
NASAs philosophy for quite some time in selecting destinations for human exploration
is to follow the water, said Robert Moses, aerospace engineer at NASAs Langley Research
Center in Hampton, Virginia. Results of our Mars mission campaign studies continue to
illustrate how critically important the water is on Mars for making the fuels and crew
consumables, including spare parts, needed on Mars and when returning to Earth. Any mission to
Mars without the ability to access the water is simply unsustainable and too risky.
Recent discoveries of what are thought to be large ice deposits just under the surface of
the Red Planet have NASA engineers working on ways to turn that ice into water, which would
help allow a sustained human presence on Mars.
And now NASA has turned to students to drill down into their ideas in the first Mars Ice
Challenge - a special edition under NASAs Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts
Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) brand of competitions. The Mars Ice Challenge asked students to
devise revolutionary technologies and methods to drill into and extract water from simulated
Martian subsurface ice stations, consisting of solid blocks of ice and clay missed with ice, about
three feet (one meter) deep.
Interested university teams proposed project plans for innovative drilling and water
extraction systems that could be used here on Earth and modified for use on Mars. But there was
a catch the systems had to be designed according to mass, volume and power constraints.
Eight teams, including students on two teams from West Virginia University in
Morgantown, and on one each from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, North Carolina State
University in Raleigh, the University of Texas in Austin and Alfred University in Alfred, New
York, will build their proposed designs and compete against each other to extract the most water
from their simulated Martian subsurface ice stations. That competition will happen over three
days next June at NASAs Langley Research Center.
Participating team members will take on the role of astronauts on Mars who monitor and
control drilling operations for water extraction, said Patrick Troutman, Human Exploration
Architecture Integration lead at NASA Langley. We are thrilled with the creative designs
proposed by these eight teams and are excited to see their various methods and approaches in
action.
Besides the actual drilling technology demonstration, students will also submit a
technical paper outlining their concepts adaptability to show the judges how their Earth-based
prototype could also be used on Mars and how the system could be modified to account for the
huge differences between the two planets operational environments.

The Mars Ice Challenge is being held in conjunction with NASA Langleys centennial
celebration activities. The Hampton, Virginia, facility was the country's first civilian aeronautics
laboratory, established in 1917. The competition's organizer, RASC-AL, has served as part of
NASAs talent pipeline as well as an idea mine for many Advanced Exploration Systems (AES)
projects since 2002.
According to officials at the RASC-AL program team at the National Institute of
Aerospace, also in Hampton, the competition is a good way to showcase NASA Langleys
growing role in understanding and advancing In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) approaches
and technologies. Improving those capabilities will be a focus for NASA over the next few
decades, and the RASC-AL Special Edition: Mars Ice Challenge offers a unique way to engage
the national university community in NASA Langleys 100th anniversary.

REACTION
For me, this Mars Ice Challenge of NASA was a great idea. I think this
Mars exploration dilemma of drilling solid blocks of ice and turning it into water
needs a deep research and preparation because theres a big difference between
Mars environment and Earths. It so exciting to see what will going to happen at
the competition. I think, theres a lot of innovations that will be made by these
aspiring teams of students.
In my opinion, the students that will simulate the drilling methods and who
will show their equipment must be knowledgeable about of the scenarios that they
will face. It is not that simple because of the constraints in the environment of
Mars. Their innovative designs and methods of drilling water should be appropriate
to the environment of Mars. I think it is too risky if they will not have a study
regarding Mars environment because they will use their prototypes here on Earth
and they should make a place where they can make an environment same in Mars.
From my point of view, their plans to live in Mars is quite challenging. They surely
searching for ways to inhabit the so-called red planet and this requires a long
period of time.
It is a great idea to live in another planet. I think, if living in Mars came true,
it is a great achievement for the human race but still, I prefer to live on the planet
where God designed for us and its the Earth. The one and only planet on the Solar
system where there is life.

NASA Solicits Proposals for Future

Robotic Solar System Exploration
Mission
NASA is seeking proposals for its next New Frontiers missiona robotic planetary mission of
discovery that would launch in the mid-2020s.
The agency on Friday released an announcement of opportunity for what will be the
fourth mission in the New Frontiers portfolio. Its predecessors are the New Horizons mission to
Pluto and the Kuiper Belt, the Juno mission to Jupiter, and OSIRIS-REx, NASAs first asteroid
sample return mission.
New Frontiers is about highly-focused missions -- each with a high science payoff -that push the frontiers of exploration and advance our understanding of the solar system, said
Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. With these missions we are seeking to answer some of the most pressing questions
in space science today.
New Frontiers is about highly-focused missions that push the frontiers of exploration
and advance our understanding of the solar system. -Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate
Administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate
The New Frontiers Program conducts principal investigator (PI)-led space science
investigations in SMDs planetary program under a development cost cap of approximately $1
billion. The principal investigator is responsible for the scientific inquiry and development of the
spacecraft. Investigations may propose the use of Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric
Generators and/or Radioisotope Heater Units.
Investigations are limited to six mission themes based on the National Research Councils
planetary decadal survey, Visions and Voyages for Planetary Science in the Decade 2013-2022:
Comet Surface Sample Return
Lunar South Pole Aitken Basin Sample Return
Ocean Worlds (Titan and/or Enceladus)
Saturn Probe
Trojan Asteroid Tour and Rendezvous
Venus In Situ Explorer

New Frontiers Program investigations must address NASAs planetary science objectives
as described in the 2014 NASA Strategic Plan and the 2014 NASA Science Plan.
The deadline for proposals is April 28, 2017. The finalists will be announced in the fall of
2017, with Phase A concept study reports due in December of 2018. At the conclusion of Phase A
concept studies, it is planned that one New Frontiers investigation will be selected to continue
into subsequent mission phases. Mission proposals are selected following an extensive
competitive peer review process.
The decadal survey has provided us with an excellent roadmap with goals for future
exploration, said Jim Green, director of NASAs Planetary Science Division in Washington. I
couldnt be more excited to set the wheels in motion for our next mission.

REACTION
Yes! This proposals for future robotic exploration mission of NASA is so
exciting. For sure, there will be a lot of discoveries again and it will help us to
know more about our solar system. The new frontier program having a principal
investigator for the scientific inquiry and development of the spacecraft is a good
idea. Having a specific person for analyzing what scientific space questions should
be answered will be a big help for the formulation of plans. The development of
the spacecraft will be accurately planned and built because the principal
investigator knows all of the things needed, the possible scenarios that might
happen and the actual operation to be performed by the astronauts.
These future explorations that NASA is planning will led to more
discoveries but still, it will need a lot of funds to start this explorations. Surely they
will spend millions of dollars for just one exploration mission thus they need to
prepare for these explorations to achieve their goals and not to waste their efforts
and funds.
For me, exploration missions could help us. Maybe, some of what will be
discovered by NASA can change our World, the way we live and the things we
have right now. Its so wonderful to see what our Lord created. He is so amazing!

Fine-tuning federalism
The shift to a federal system of government will happen under the Duterte administration.
The president is for it; the legislature and even the local government officials support it. Beyond
the benefits to the country, there are collateral advantages to the incumbent officials. Chopping
up the nation into chunks manageable enough for a political family to dominate will ensure the
perpetuation of local dynasties with more resources and greater autonomy. The local power base
will also mean that representatives to the legislature will come from the same ruling elite.
Change in the system of government will not mean a change toward people empowerment; it
could even be the restoration of feudalism in the Philippines.
However, if those who will cause the change are sincere in their aspirations to come up
with a political system that ensures the development of the countryside, the elimination of
poverty, and the fruition of people power since EDSA, it may help for them to deal with some
significant issues.
The number of states within the federal system should be based on ensuring some level of
equity in the distribution of resources; the growth centers, existing and potential; the state of
infrastructure and of the educational system. The existing regions if to be made into states may
be too much for a small country like the Philippines. I would tend towards three Luzon,
Visayas, and Mindanao although having six, half of each of the major island groups may still
be workable.
A unicameral legislature and a significant decrease in the number of legislators especially
in Congress are necessary. The burden of legislating will be at the level of the different states and
the new national legislature will definitely have less work than the existing one. The savings
from these moves will be staggering if one bases ones computation on the 2016 budget of the
Senate and Congress.
To ensure greater peoples participation in the democratic process and leadership, a strong
anti-dynastic orientation should pervade the new Constitution. It may be necessary to ensure the
passage of implementing laws within a short period after the enactment of the new Constitution
to prevent the situation where provisions are rendered inoperative because of a legislature
protecting its vested interests. The inclusion of government funding for political parties as well
as candidates coming from the poor and disadvantaged sector, including the middle class
(already shrinking) will help democratize the political leadership. An introduction of a primary
system in addition to the present campaign period will allow national and local candidates to be
adequately vetted.
To avoid the fragmentation of the country, a strong central government is needed in the
areas of foreign affairs; national defense (the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Air Force, and Army
will have smaller core of regular troops and a mass base of reservists); customs and quarantine;
an independent monetary authority; a Supreme Court with all other courts situated in the states; a
social security system that equalizes benefits of both the government and private workers; a
national penal system with differentiated prisons for white collar crimes following the USA
system; a civil service commission covering both national and state employees; and a national
agency for standards.

While federalism will allow the different states to proceed along their own paths to
development, a unified vision along the lines of Ambisyon 2040 would ensure a country where
no one Filipino or state is left behind. One Philippines should still prevail!

REACTION
Im so shocked the moment Ive read about this fine-tuning federalism that
will happen in our country. This shift from a democratic to a federal system of
government is not that simple. This kind of government system is new to all of the
Pilipino citizens.
I think this shifting of government system will bring a drastic change in our
country if it will be enforced. These changes I think is an adequate change that will
lead our country to success. I think it is a great idea. Making the Philippines a
federal state can help our economy. Chopping up the nation into chunks and
making it states can contribute to our economic growth. But just what was stated
on the article, it can lead to local political dynasty but I think they will be afraid of
duterte (Laugh Out Loud).
This kind of government needs a full participation of every states and for
me, even there will be a division among our nation for the development, still, there
will be one Philippines that is united in faith, in decisions and in success! I believe
that Philippines under Dutertes administration will be a country of success. He
changed our countrys situation. Turning it from a thing to something. He is a man
who is full of ambition for his country. Ive remembered again a verse from the
bible pertaining to our leaders.
Romans 13: 1-3 (TEV)
1
Everyone must obey state authorities, because no authority exists without Gods
permission, and the existing authorities have been put there by God. 2 Whoever
opposes the existing authority opposes what God has ordered; and anyone who
does so will bring judgement on himself. 3 For rulers are not to be feared by those
who do good, but by those who do evil.

PH in 1977, Germany today on Shariah justice

Among all the countries of Europe, it is Germany that has accepted the most refugees
from the war-torn countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Millions fled from Syria, where
a civil war has raged for five years now. Many others came from northern Iraq where, to this day,
fighting rages around the city of Mosul between jihadist forces of the Islamic State and Iraqis
with their Kurdish allies.
Germany is now facing problems related to its acceptance of nearly a million asylum
seekers, with religious and cultural practices that conflict with those of their host country.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, campaigning for reelection, has found it necessary to allay
the fears of her constituents by assuring that the Shariah Law of the Muslims will never replace
German justice anywhere in the country. She supported a ban on full-face veils as practiced by
some Muslim women. She added that Germany will now be more cautious in welcoming
immigrants in the future.
The other countries of Europe have long resisted the influx of refugees from the Middle
East. The United States too has not been as welcoming to them as Germany. With the election of
Donald Trump as president, the doors may just be shut. Among Trumps campaign pledges was
that he would ban all Muslim immigrants, especially those coming from terrorist states like
Syria, Iran, and the Philippines.
Trumps mention of the Philippines arises from reports, widely spread abroad, of the
kidnapping and beheading of foreign hostages by the Abu Sayyaf and the Maute in Mindanao.
Before that, there were battles between Philippine government forces and the two major Muslim
combat groups the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front (MILF).
Muslim separatists seek to return the country to the age before Spanish Catholic
colonization began in 1565. Two hundred years before the Spaniards, Islamic missionaries had
come to the Philippines and the Islamic faith had spread widely in Mindanao. After the
Spaniards, the Americans continued foreign domination of the country, which ended only with
Philippine independence in 1946.
In 1977, President Ferdinand Marcos issued Presidential Decree 1083, a Code of Muslim
Personal Laws of the Philippines, establishing a Muslim legal system in Filipino Muslim
communities. Today, there are Shariah district and circuit courts, mostly in the Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao. Islamic law also applies to civil cases involving all Muslims
nationwide through civil courts under a session from the five Shariah district courts.
Many nations have long shared the same concerns and problems. Germany today is
rejecting the Shariah system of justice proposed for its nearly one million Muslim refugees. The
Philippines, which is now mostly Christian, faced and acted on this matter as early as 1977,
when President Marcos established Shariah courts for Muslims in the country.

REACTION
I think, this is a matter of culture making it a way to terrorize. For me,
Muslim terrorists are known to all countries thats why many nations are aware of
the things that might happen because of these terrorists. What Germany has done to
protect their country is right. Theyre just protecting their citizen from any trouble.
In my opinion, the reason why German Chancellor Angela Merkel supported
a ban on full-face veils as practiced by some Muslim women because she was only
being cautious thinking that the Muslim terrorists make it a way to hide themselves
and terrorize the country. Shariah religious laws based on the koran that Muslims
follow is sometimes used by the Muslim groups of terrorists thats why we should
be aware and careful at all times. Giving an opinion to what Donald Trump,
recently elected president of USA, said that he is closing the doors for terrorist
states like Philippines to enter the America is not that bad. Its his decision and I
think he is being cautious for his country.

All these games are excellent choices, and none of them would truly be
considered a bad game. There were certainly worse games released on the
console, so this order is entirely down to my personal tastes and

The authority of Jesus questioned

Matthew 21:23-27
When Jesus had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people
approached Him as He was teaching and said, By what authority are You doing these things?
And who gave you this authority? Jesus said to them in reply, I shall ask you one question, and
if you answer it for Me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things. Where was
Johns baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin? They discussed this among
themselves and said, If we say Of heavenly origin, He will say to us, Then why did you not
believe him? But if we say, Of human origin, we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a
prophet. So they said to Jesus in reply, We do not know. He Himself said to them, Neither
shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Reflection
BY WHAT AUTHORITY ARE YOU DOING THESE THINGS? Jesus is being challenged by
religious and civil authorities in the Temple because they are displeased by His earlier behavior.
Prior to this incident, when He first arrived at the Temple, Jesus drove out the merchants and
overturned the tables of the money changers (cf Mt. 21:12).
When Jesus returns to the Temple and teaches in its precincts, the authorities get back at Him.
But they make a big mistake in the formulation of their question. By what authority Jesus
exploits their question to unmask where the chief priests and scribes are coming from and to
affirm the importance of Johns baptism, which they have never paid attention to.
First, they did not believe the baptism of John. The fact that people from all places were going to
John in droves for baptism should have meant something to them. But they were not keen on it.
Instead, they kept their routine as if nothing extraordinary was happening in the countryside and
now in Jerusalem itself.
Second, the baptism of John is the key to understand where Jesus is coming from. Without
conversion or metanoia, all the words and deeds of Jesus are meaningless. Jesus actions in the
Temple cannot be seen as authorized from above.
Can you demolish your personal structures that make you practice obsolete religion in favor of
Jesus who is establishing Gods Kingdom here on earth?

REACTION
Ive already read the verse Matthew 21:23-27 in my daily devotion before
and for me, Jesus answer to the chief priests was so amazing and highly
intellective. He is a man full of wisdom! And his answer made the chief priests
stunned. For me, asking the Lord about his authority, showing great miracles to
them in their time, was an immoral act. At that time, the chief priests doesnt
believe Jesus. They are accusing him as speaking blasphemy.
Ive just wanted to say something about what is written on the article.
Theyve said Second, the baptism of John is the key to understand where Jesus is
coming from. Without conversion or metanoia, all the words and deeds of
Jesus are meaningless. Jesus actions in the Temple cannot be seen as
authorized from above.
I think, Lord Jesus didnt go to John the Baptist to be converted. Baptism
does not mean you are converting into a religion. Baptism is a step of obedience.
Matthew 3:13-15 13 At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at
the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to make him change his mind.
I ought to be baptized by you, John said, and yet you have come to me! 15 But
Jesus answered him, Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God
requires. So John agreed.
It is not about conversion of religion, it is about obedience to our heavenly
Father and after that, I verse 17 said - Then a voice said from heaven, This is my
own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.
For us Christians, we are baptized because it is a public confession of our
faith to Lord Jesus Christ, it is an open declaration of our commitment to Christ
and lastly, it is a pledge of loyalty. The reason why we are being immersed when
we are being baptized is the dramatization of Jesus, from death to life. It means
that we, as a Christian, when we were baptized, our old self has gone. 2
Corinthians 5:17 The old has gone, the new has come! It means that we left
behind the sinful things we do when we are not yet a true believer.

Is Jesus still here?

READ: Roman 8:31-39
[Nothing] shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. vv.
38-39

Ted Robertsons home in Colorado was one of more than 500 destroyed by the Black
Forest Fire in June 2013. When he was allowed to return and sift through the ash and rubble, he
was hoping to find a precious family heirloom made by his wife-a tiny ceramic figurine of baby
Jesus about the size of a postage stamp. As he searched the charred remains of their home, he
kept wondering, Is the baby Jesus still here?

When our lives are rocked by disappointment and loss, we may wonder if Jesus is still
here with us. The Bibles answer is a resounding Yes! Neither death nor life, nor angels nor
principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to comeshall be able to separate us
from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 8:38-39).

In a corner of what used to be his garage, Ted Robertson discovered the burned remnants
of a nativity scene and there he found the baby Jesus figurine undamaged by the flames. He told
KRDO NewsChannel 13, [Weve] gone from apprehension to hope that were going to
recover some parts of our life that we thought were lost.
Is Jesus still here? He is indeed, and that is the everlasting wonder of Christmas.

REACTION
This is a wonderful article from a fellow believer. I totally agree of what he
said. Jesus is still here with us. He will never leave us alone! Actually I think he
should say that Lord Jesus Christ is not literally in our World right now. Instead of
saying that, he should say that Lord Jesus Christs presence is here through the
Holy Spirit who was the one that the Lord Jesus left here to guide us and to help us
in our Christian life.
Even though Lord Jesus leave the Earth and go to heaven (John 16:28) he
leave us the third person of the triune. The Holy Spirit is with us, he is the one who
manifest the works of God to our lives (believers). Lord Jesus leave the Holy Spirit
to us because it is his promise that he will never leave us alone.
John 14:25-27
25

All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind
you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give
you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and
do not be afraid.
What all I can say is, he is truly faithful to his promises. God is not dead, he
is surely alive! Christmas is the season for Lord Jesus Christ and we should
celebrate this season with Joy because he overcome the world with his love. No
Christ, no Christmas. Everyday should be a Christmas. Because without Christ, our
salvation will never be born.
