service areas in Lanao del Sur and Marawi City.

initiative has support from the Australian Embassy thru
its Strengthening Grassroots Interfaith Dialogue and
Understanding (SGIDU) Program.

y Masiu is one of the Municipalities in Lanao del Sur which
is politically subdivided into 35 Barangays. Majority of its
population are Muslims. The agricultural town is home to
the Maranao which also known as ‘snow land’ because of
its cold temperature. It has a population of 24,105 people
in 3,466 households.
y Masiu is resource constrained in terms of implementing
projects. Most of the households are engaged in
agricultural farming such as rice, corn, coconut and
livestock raising.
y Position held by government officials were perceived as
ownership and not responsibility
y Masiu is dominated by Muslim
people but Maranao culture is
stronger. “Kaplolota” or kinship,

Description
THE ARTICLE OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
STATED ON ARTICLE 26 THAT:
(1) EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION. EDUCATION SHALL BE
FREE, AT LEAST IN THE ELEMENTARY AND FUNDAMENTAL STAGES.
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SHALL BE COMPULSORY. TECHNICAL AND
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SHALL BE MADE GENERALLY AVAILABLE AND
HIGHER EDUCATION SHALL BE EQUALLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL ON THE BASIS
OF MERIT.
(2) EDUCATION SHALL BE DIRECTED TO THE FULL DEVELOPMENT OF THE
HUMAN PERSONALITY AND TO THE STRENGTHENING OF RESPECT FOR
HUMAN RIGHTS AND FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS. IT SHALL PROMOTE
UNDERSTANDING, TOLERANCE AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG ALL NATIONS,
RACIAL OR RELIGIOUS GROUPS, AND SHALL FURTHER THE ACTIVITIES OF
THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF PEACE.
(3) PARENTS HAVE A PRIOR RIGHT TO CHOOSE THE KIND OF EDUCATION
THAT SHALL BE GIVEN TO THEIR CHILDREN.

AT THE SAME TIME, IT WILL PROVIDE A VENUE FOR THE
TEACHERS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES, EXPERIENCES,
LEARNINGS AS WELL AS BEST PRACTICES WHICH CAN HELP
OTHERS IN DEVELOPING THEIR TEACHING SKILLS.
