The device sketched in Figure 3 consists of a punch, actuated by a
circular, eccentrically pivoted cam with plane follower. The helical
spring of free length (neglecting the end-coils), Lf=35mm, is preloaded
with an initial deflection, f0. During operation, the stroke of the punch
must be s=10mm. Given the spring wire diameter, d=2mm, mean coil
diameter, Dm=10mm, and the number of active coils, na=10, calculate
(consider the shear modulus G=8.1104 MPa):
a) The eccentricity of the cam pivot, e, assuming a cam diameter
D=40mm.
b) The preload, Fmin, by selecting an appropriate value for its initial
deflection, f0.
c) Minimum distance Lmin.
d) Maximum force , Fmax, acting radially on the cam.
e) Maximum stress in the coil.
f) The energy stored by the spring during a cycle.
