STUDIO THEME: SYMBIOTIC

Symbiosis is defined as an interaction between two different organisms living in close physical
association, usually to the advantage of both. Symbiosis creates a dynamic relationship
between two elements while allowing them to remain in opposition. An example of this idea is
the veranda. A veranda is an intermediary zone between the garden or the street and the
house. Through opposing forces, the spaces are linked in symbiosis. By placing an intermediary
space between two opposing spaces and a neutral zone linking public and private spaces,
ambiguity and ambivalence are introduced and a rich and suggestive architecture is created.
The physical cooperation with the natural environment is necessary to humankind's survival;
while the symbolic relationship represents a consciousness of our biological place in the
universe.
In this semester students, will understanding what is architecture. Architecture consists of
various elements and components and one of it is space. Students will explore the making of
spaces and its meaning in architecture and experiment simply a very small architecture which
allow users to experience more with less.
There are three (4) phases all together for this semester.
The first phase is a group project which have two tasks; one is a symbiotic morphing
structure and two is to design a marble run structure THE JOURNEY.
Second phase is a short individual exercise on space modulation THE ONEPAX STRUCTURE
Phase three is the major project. It is appropriate at this level of studio design to introduce
student to design a timber living unit for four (4) peoples THE TIMBER HOMESTAY.
Phase four is a short 1:1 hands-on project THE ARKIOSK

GROUPING
Why a collaborative learning is important? People often get stuck in their own unique ways of
thinking; listening to another person's ideas helps them to broaden their horizons so when it
comes to solving a problem, the other group members may be able to think of things that the
one individual may not have on his/her own.

STUDIO RULES AND REGULATIONS

The studio is structured with the expectation that all students MUST attend all the studio
meetings, as clearly spelled out in the university policy on academic ethics. During this time,
studio presentations, individual criticisms, group reviews and discussions are held.
Apart from the scheduled design studio sessions, each student is expected to work in the studio
in order to available for informal consultation with lecturers and benefit from peer learning
through interaction with fellow students. It is common knowledge that students that work at
home perform poorly.
Late work will not be accepted unless it qualified with an official reason. All
assignments/exercises are to be submitted on due date and time as indicated; failing which
appropriate penalty will be applied accordingly (maximum grade is C).
Severe incompleteness will lead to down grading of individual assignments based upon the degree
of incompleteness or will be regard as incomplete submission (to refer to submission
requirements) (maximum grade is C. Non-submission is considered fail (grade E).

DDWR 1126

SYMBIOTIC

Group assignments must show individual contributions, and marks will be allocated on pro-rata
basis.
If a student fail a major design project (50% and above) he/she will be deemed to fail the
course.
