Maths Functions Portfolio

Oct-Dec 2016
Individual Goals
From your conference with Dr Cate, identify all of your individual goals relevant to maths.
Reflect on each in the table below and set some new goals for this coming unit of work.
Initial goal

How did you attempt to

achieve this goal? Were
you successful?

For the next maths unit,

how might you revise this
goal? What is your strategy
for achieving it?

To share three times

throughout the week in class.

I haven't shared 3 times each

week at all.

This unit I will actually try and

share my ideas and to share
in class discussion

Work on the extension part

and self assessment part of
the problem of the week.

I have been able to achieve

this goal fully and get credit
for it.

I will try to go more in depth

for all the sections for the
POW

Revised Goal List for this unit of work:

1. To share three times throughout the week in class
2. Go more in depth on all the POW sections
3.
Mathematical Concepts and weekly growth
Each week, reflect on your maths work, skills as a collaborator and one or more of your
individual goals. Provide evidence of your growth and plans for the coming week
Week 1:
Mathematical Skill - what
did you learn or work on this
week?

Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

habits of mathematicians you used!

This week I learned to think

of solutions that are out of
the box when working on the
The Broken Eggs

Throughout this problem I had to Be Confident, Patient and

Persistent, When working on this problem I tried to think really
logically by just trying to find a function to solve the equation.
But after a while I realized that I could just look at the multiples
of seven and see if they worked. Just because I was trying to
make life harder by finding a function while could've just
looked at multiples of seven that were odd numbers

My Group collaboration
and participation - what

collaboration or participation
skills did you try this week?
The Broken Eggs

I learned to be open to others ideas and have an open mind

and respect everyone opinion. I learned this because when I
was discussing this problem with my group we all had different
answers and different way to get the answers. We all to listen
to each other and be able to really listen to their explanation to
what they were saying, instead of being closed minded and
sticking to our opinion.

Individual goals - which

individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Evidence of your growth and plans for next week

The goal I made progress in

was the Work on the
extension part and self
assessment part of the
problem of the week.
Sticky gum problem
And
The Broken Eggs

If you look at my first POW you can see the difference in my

first and current POW. The first POW has like two sentences
for the self assessment and then if you look at my current one
you can see their is two paragraphs explaining the self
assessments.

Week 2:
Mathematical Skill - what
did you learn or work on this
week?

Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

habits of mathematicians you used!

I learned how to solve

Marcellas Bagels.

Used stay organized throughout solving this problem because

when I was trying to simplify the equation I wrote down the
steps I took to simplify the equation.

Group collaboration and

participation - what
collaboration or participation
skills did you try this week?

Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this

week?

Marcellas Bagels

When working on Marcellas Bagels my partners had a

different answer than I did and so we worked together to come
to a compromise/check each other's work. Instead of changing
my idea because I didnt have the same one I explained my

idea to them and listened to why they had theirs.

Individual goals - which
individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Evidence of your growth and plans for next week

I made progress in the goal

to share in class.

During the socratic seminar I shared 2 times and then during

one of Dr.cates lectures I asked a clarifying question.

Week 3:
Mathematical Skill - what
did you learn or work on this
week?

Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

habits of mathematicians you used!

This week I learned how to

use/solve a Sigma.

I used the habit of collaboration and and listen. This is

because at first didnt get how to use or solve for a sigma.
Then I asked Felix for help and he explained it to me and I kind
of got it. So then I asked him to clarifying questions I could
understand better. If you were to look at my add it up
worksheet you would see that all the questions are answered
and understandable.

Group collaboration and

participation - what
collaboration or participation
skills did you try this week?

Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this

week?

I Used group collaboration

when we were working on
the pulling out rules
worksheet.

When working on this problem, problem 3 my group and I had

a different function but the same answer. We all got the they
needed 11 people to pull out the 30 bags of weeds. So we had
to listen to each other explain our different functions and how
we got the answer. At the end some people had wrong
functions and some people had the same function just in a
different order.

Individual goals - which

individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Evidence of your growth and plans for next week

I made progress on the goal

Go more in depth on all the
POW sections.

You can see this on this week POW I went really depth in all of
the sections. Next week I really want to work on my goal of
sharing in class three times in class.

Week 4:

Mathematical Skill - what

did you learn or work on this
week?

Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

habits of mathematicians you used!

This week I worked on the

Border Varieties.

I used the habit of Collaborate and Listen when working on this

project. Used this because the way I solved this problem was
multiple the numbers of sides by the length of the sides, and
that equals 40 then I subtracted 4 because the sides overlap.
Then my partner Danny said it equaled 44 tiles and he
explained his reasoning and then I explained mine and my
made more sense.

Group collaboration and

participation - what
collaboration or participation
skills did you try this week?

Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this

week?

I learned not to tell people

other people their are
wrong without listening to
their reasoning behind
their answer.

Because usually I would tell them they are wrong and

continue to explain my answer. But this week I listen to
his reason behind his answer and tried to find the answer.

Individual goals - which

individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Evidence of your growth and plans for next week

I made no progress in my
goals this week.

Next week im going to try to work on my sharing in class

three times in class. I will do this by asking clarifying
questions.

Week 5:
Mathematical Skill - what
did you learn or work on this
week?

Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

habits of mathematicians you used!

Math units Summary

presentation

I used the habit to look for patterns. I used this habit because
when I was listing to other peoples presentation I had to look
for similar patterns to other problems. Like relating the Broken
egg problem to the 1-2-3-4 Problem because you have to try
multiple things/equations to get the answers.

Group collaboration and

participation - what
collaboration or participation
skills did you try this week?

Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this

week?

I had to collaborate with my

group to make the
presentation.

My group had some disagreements to who was going to be

doing what in the presentation. Because Leslie wanted to do
the mistakes you can make while solving this problem and I
also wanted to do this section. So we came up with a
compromise of she could both do the section. This is very
important because when working in groups we have to learn to
compromise. Next week want to work keeping my sass down
during exhibition towards my group.

Individual goals - which

individual goal did you make
progress in this week?

Evidence of your growth and plans for next week

Share with the class three

times each week.

I only shared once but that is better than last week

because last week I shared zero times. I really want to
improve on sharing in class.

Summary of understanding
Look at Edmodo and calculate the percentage of submitted assignments: 95%
Look at Powerschool and find out the proportion of your assignments with an A, B, C, D or F
grade. Complete this table:
Grade

Number of
assignments
A

Summary of understanding. (If someone outside the school asked you to explain what you
learned during this unit and how it is relevant to your life, what would you say? Think about the
progression of concepts from start to finish and think about what new things you would like to
learn and why.)

I would tell them, throughout this unit we have learn to see math through patterns. Math
algorithms were used in the problems we need to solve. We also used the system of equation.
Ex. 5 variables = 5 equations for System of equations. We learned that their is always multiple
solutions to a problem.
Ex. For the 1-2-3-4 problem people got different ways of getting 4 or 12.
Over all in this unit we learned that their is patterns in math and that we should always have an
open mind when coming up with solutions because sometimes there will be more than one.

Grade Justification. (Looking back over all of your work during this unit, suggest a grade that
you think you deserve and provide justification for that grade. Explain how you have grown as a
mathematician and in your effort to achieve goals. Remember that a higher grade is justified by
growth not final proficiency. For example, even if you understood all of the mathematical
concepts, but you didnt challenge yourself in your group work or to achieve your goals, your
grade would not be as high.)
I feel like I deserve a B. This is because even though I always got my work done and was
publish worthy. I never really pushed myself, I didnt really meet my goal of raising hand three
times each week. But I completed my goal of going more indepth in my POWS. Myself as a
group member have grown a lot, before it was really hard for me to take other peoples ideas
into consideration, but now im a really good a taking everyones ideas and compromising ways
to put them into our product. This is why I feel like I deserve a B because even though I pushed
myself in something's their was still a lot I could do to push myself.

What grade do you think you deserve for this unit?: I think I deserve a B in this unit.
Provide a justification for your grade:
This is because I feel like I did grow a lot but I didnt grow to the best of my potential
because I couldnt raise my hand in class three times per week. Because I believe that
was the only thing holding me back, because I always turned in my work on time and the
times I didnt is because I had a doctor's appointment that day and I had to wait until the
next day to get help from my peers or Dr.Cate. That is why I feel like I deserve a B.
