A TUTORIAL GUIDE USING THOMPSON REUTERS


EIKON
The objective of this tutorial is to provide a basic guidance on how to retrieve data
using Thomson Reuters Eikon database which is available at the library of University
of Tenaga Nasional, Muadzam Shah Campus, Pahang.
First you need to log in at the specific computer in the library by following the UserId and the Password as written on the desk. There is only one computer terminal
available at the library and therefore you should plan your visit to avoid everyone
cramping at the database at very last minute.
After you have logged in the ID and Password, the following screen as below will
appear.
Example: You want to retrieve financial data on Sime Darby Bhd.
1st Step : On the top left corner of the Thomson Reuters Eikon database, just type
Sime Darby inside the Search Row, and click on SIME.KL as below. All companies
listed in the Bursa Malaysia will have an extension of ***.KL

Now the following screen below will appear.


You can see a list of the menus that are available as follows:
Overview: Price: Research: News: Debt: Credit: Estimates: Fundamentals:
Chart: Valuation: Competitors: Officers: Filings: Events: Transactions:
Corporate actions: Ownership: 360 Menu
If you click on 360 Menu, it will show you all the details of list of data available in
the database.
Most of the financial data that you need for your assignment is available from the
Fundamentals menu.

If you click on Fundamentals => then Balance Sheet, the following screen will
appear.
This database will show more than 10 years data from balance sheet. Here,
example for Sime darby Bhd, the database have available data from the year 1996
unitil 2013 (17 years).
From this balance Sheet database, you wil need to extract data for Short Term
Debt, Long Term Debt, Total Debt and Total Equity.

Extract also the data for Total Common Stock Outstanding in order to calculate
the market value of the firm at the end of the balance sheet date.

Market Value (yearly) = Closing stock price X No. of Shares outstanding


(as at the balance sheet date)

Click on Fundamentals => then Income Statement menu to retrieve data of


Dividend per share.

How to find closing stock prices yearly at the end of balance sheet date?
You can click at Price => then Quote History menu as in the screen below:

To find data for yearly and 10 year period closing stock prices, you must click on
Interval=>Yearly, History Period => 10 years and then click on Update View
button.

Now the closing price for the stock as at 31 st Dec for each year is shown as below.
If the balance sheet date does not fall on 31 st Dec on each year, you can click on
Interval =>Monthly to get the data for month end closing share prices.
Use the Close prices for the closing share price for the company.

HOW TO SAVE YOUR DATA?


You can also save your data into Excel file and save them into your pendrive later.
Click on the small icon Download to Excel on the right side of the screen.

When File Download box appear, click on SAVE then choose to save it on your
removable pendrive on G:drive.

If you open your saved file later in the Excel, your saved data will appear as below:

To save your balance sheet data, click on the small icon Download to Excel on the
right side of the screen.

The data saved from the Balance Sheet will appear in your Excel file as below:

You can also check the ratios that you have calculated using the following search:
Fundamentals => Ratios-Key Metrics

To print a chart of stock price movement over the past 10 year period, click on the
menu Chart then click Weekly. Then click the small Chart icon on the right.

The stock price chart will appear as below.


To save a chart into your pendrive, do a click right on the mouse, then click File =>
Save as Image => Bitmap File.
