Physical Science Syllabus Walker Valley High School

Course Title: Physical Science

Course Description: This is an introductory course exploring the most fundamental
concepts of chemistry and physics. This course is intended to build on ideas and skills
you learned in middle school science by explaining more in-depth phenomena. You will
be expected to perform the following tasks at a high level by the end of the course:
develop and use models, plan and conduct investigations, analyze and interpret data,
use mathematical and computational thinking, and construct explanations as well as
demonstrate an understanding of engineering practices such as design and evaluation.
Teacher: Craig Ryan

Materials:
A notebook or binder designated for Physical Science
Something to write with (pen or pencil) I will let you borrow one on a must need
basis, but I have limited supplies.
Paper
Any other materials I ask you to bring in throughout the semester
Outline of Course:

1st 9 weeks Physics

Basics of Science
Lab Safety
Motion
Forces
Work, Power, & Energy

2nd 9 weeks Chemistry

Matter
Atoms
Periodic Table & Elements
Compounds
Chemical Reactions

Each topic above will be broken down into mini lessons that focus on specific areas
within the topic (Ex: Motion consists of Speed, Velocity, Acceleration, etc.)
Assessments: There will be at least one Skills Assessment (quiz) given over each mini
lesson. There will also be a Major Assessment (test) given once we have finished
covering a standard. The Major Assessments can cover from one to several of the topics
listed above. All Major Assessments will be announced, but Skills Assessments can be
presented as pop quizzes.

* It should be noted that being on time, participation, and responsibility are logged and
lumped into a single classwork grade at the end of each 9 weeks grading period.
Make-up Policy:Refer to the WVHS Student Handbook for new district make-up policy.
Test Retakes: Students that make below an 80 on a test can retake that test with a few
stipulations.
- The highest grade the student can receive on the retake is an 80.
- The retake grade will be taken higher or lower.
- Students may only retest one time.
- The retake must be taken within one week of receiving a score on an assessment.
- Students must sign up to retake a test. If they miss their time, they will forfeit the
right to retake that test (subject to teacher discretion).
- The student must complete an extra assignment from the unit the test material
covered.
- All assignments from that unit must be turned in no missing assignments.
- No retakes will be allowed during the last week of each grading period.
Grade Portal: You and your parents should monitor your grades regularly via the Parent
Grade Portal. Grades will be entered weekly.
This syllabus is a tentative outline of this course and may be changed as deemed
necessary by the instructor.

I have read and understand the syllabus for Coach Craigs science class.
