LESSON OUTLINE

STARTER

- Teacher shows pupils the ingredients to make a sandwich


(e.g. bread, mayonnaise, sardines, lettuce and onions) and
asks a few questions such as; What do you think I am going
to make? What do you think will happen if I dont include
bread to make a sandwich? The pupils respond to the
teachers questions.
- Teacher explains that the same happens if one of the
components is not present in a speech. The sandwich
represents the format of a speech.

Activity 1
- Teacher divides pupils into groups of four according to their
ability.
- Teacher explains to the pupils that they are going to learn
about the essential parts in writing a speech fit together.
- Teacher distributes an envelope to each group.
Basic
- Pupils label the sandwich diagram with the following five
elements:
a) introduction
b) first main paragraph
c) second main paragraph
d) third main paragraph
e) conclusion

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Advance:
- Pupils have to do the same activity as the basic pupils do

plus they have to sequence the supporting details, summary


of ideas and topic sentences to make up a paragraph.
Activity 2
Basic:
- Pupils sit in the same group. They have to paragraphs cut
into sentence strips. Then, they sort in sequential order and
glue onto template. The introduction and the conclusion are
given.
Advance:
- Pupils sit in the same group. They have all sentences
mixed up. Then, they sort in sequential order and glue onto
template. They introduction and conclusion are given.
Activity 3:
- Teacher asks the pupils to write a speech. The question
contains 12 contents.
Basic:
Pupils must write a speech using the correct format and
write meaningful sentences using the contents given.
Teacher will assist these pupils.
Advance:
Pupils must write a speech using the correct format and
write meaningful sentences using the contents given. They
must also elaborate each point in their speech.

PLENARY

- Teacher pastes a sandwich and a house diagrams on the


whiteboard.
- Pupils have two minutes to write down as much as they
can about the topic.
- Teacher asks for volunteered pupils to share their
feedback. Teacher collates all responses on the board for
class to see how much they already know.
