II. Linguistic Competence

(Phonology- Speaking)

The other day, I forgot my phone on the bus. The next morning I went
to the lost and found office to see if it had been turned in. I saw the
phone on the desk at the office. Since the battery had died during
the night, it was difficult to convince the man that it was mine. Then
I remembered a v-shaped scratch on the back of the phone. I
described the scratch to the man, and he happily returned the phone
to me.

2. What could be the

4

Problema jud nko na maam. Kapuyan

ko maghuna-huna sa meaning mao ng
bahalag di nako kasabot.
If the words are unfamiliar dili ghapon
nko masabtan usahay kay even the
definitions in the dictionary are also
difficult
Yes maam, true. I dont like reading
novels kay lisud.
Difficult words are challenging, I think.
But there are times when I dont like to
think, so I just got the whole meaning.
Pag dili ko kasabot sa words maam
nagapangutana
ko
unya
akong
ginapangutana kay wala pud kasabot.
Sometimes, I just skip the word and
continue with the simple ones.
Its okay to understand the meaning if
there are clues maam.
I always bring with me my dictionary
and maski ang akong phone naay
dictionary I still find it difficult to use the
words in a sentence.
I skip if I encounter the unfamiliar
words. Kapoy na maghuna-huna
because dili man ghapon ko kasabot.
Musalapid jud akong dila maam.
If I am too conscious about my
pronunciation especially pag naa sa
classroom mamali jud ko maam.
Rapid speech confuses me. Naa koy
difficulty in pronouncing mga sounds
nga nagsunod such as /th/, /f/ and /v/
I am too conscious. I want to have a
perfect pronunciation thats why I
commit mistakes.
Dili lang jud ko particular sa
pronunciation maam. Usahay dili ko
aware nga mali na diay.

3. Is it easy for you to

construct sentences

and connect ideas?

3

Mahadlok ko maam ui especially sa

mga oral recitations. Dili lng jud ko
anad mag English.
Same with him maam, kanang
musalapid jud akong dila. Kadugayan
kay maconscious nako mamali na
nako ug pronounce.
Mao jud. Unya mabali na ang uban
pronunciationmalata na kaayo ang
uban ang uban pud magahi.
Depende sa topic maam. If I know what
to write about makasulat jud ko.
In my case, even if kabalo ko sa topic
maglisud gihapon ko magsulat kay sa
grammar.
Maglagot jud ko maam. Makasulat
man ko pero lisod kaayo gamiton ng
in, on, at. Kanang prepositions.
Grammar man jud ang problema
maam. Same sa giingon gud nimo sa
amua sa una maam nga naa man jud
mi ideas kaso lang lisod kaayo isulat
kay English man gud.
I can write sentences man maam but
magluya nako sa unsaon sila pag
connect maam kay usahay mawala jud
ko sa passing.
Makasulat ko maam. I can finish writing
tasks pero after that ma realize nako
nga daghan ko errors especially sa
kanang verb tense ug kanang subjectverb agreement
Prepositions are my problems. Lahi
rajud maam kay if naa koy idea tapos
pag ibutang nko sya sa words usahay
malahi ang meaning kay malahi diay
nko ug sulat.
If I know the topic maam, I can write. I
can write sentences.

4. Do you find it easy

to identify what is the

part of speech of the
word?

2
3

5
6

7
8

5. What are the other

factors that affect

your performance in

English?

Kabalo ko unsa ng noun maam ug verb

pero pag naa na gani sa sentence
malibog nako.
Malagot jud ko anang part of speech
maam ui.
Depende sa paggamit maam. Pero
naa lang jud usahay nga malibog ko
maam especially pag kanang ipagamit
na gani na siya sa sentence.
To easily identify the lexical category
maam kay ginagamit nko sa sentence
para makabaalo ko sa iyang location.
Pag naa na sentence maam makabalo
nako sa part of speech.
Ginabantayan nako tong giingon nimo
sa una maam kadtong affix na ma-add.
So for example government kay noun
sya because naay -ment
Makutaw jud akong utok ana maam,
promise. Mao tong naglisud ko sa test.
Libog maam pag daghan na kaayo ipaidentify pero kung isa-isa lang maka
answer ko. Labi na ug nakasulat with
the sentence.
Maybe maam its my exposure.
Kanang makaencounter lang ko ug
English sa classroom.
Sa balay maam kay wala gyud ng idea
nga mag English kay sila mama ug
papa maam pag iask nako unsa
English ani or ana, muingon rag, ay
ambot ana, wa ko kabalo. Mao ng
wala jud maam.
My uncle is the one who influenced me
maam. Wala man jud naka graduate
akong parents mao ng wala pud silay
ma share sa amoa about ana pero my
uncle who is a teacher helped me.
Ginapabasa ko niya, ginapa apil ug

7
8

speech fest. It helped me.

Sa balay kay trabaho jud sa uma
maam. My parents would always tell
me nga mutabang sa ila sa bukid or if
not naa lang ko sa balay magprepare
ug food. However, even if wala sila
nagatabang sa akoa to learn the
language, I do it myself. I love English
mao ng nagapaningkamot ko.
No one in the family finished a degree
maam. Unya sa among pagskwela
supportive jud sila pero syempre
theyre not particular with the language.
Ako-ako lang jud maam and ma-inspire
pud ko sa kanang mga teachers pud
nga hawud kaayo mutudlo ug English.
Siguro maam kay wala jud ko naanad
ug English. When I was in high school
kay wala ra jud na sa akoa. Basta
makapasar. Dili pud kaayo ko
nagaparticipate ug activities maam
because maulaw lagi.
My ate loves to read maam. Mao pud
siguro iya influence sa akoa.
Sa baryo baya maam kay dili baya uso
ng English2. Mao ng karon ra jud ko
college nabumbahan jud ug English.
Medyo nashock ko maam during my
first day here kay daghan man diay
klase sa English (laughed-out-loud).
