Welcome to Mathtropolis!
Page 5
The math skills covered become increasingly challenging as students work from
the front of the book to its back. And within each problem set, the questions become
progressively more difficult to build confidence, understanding, and, finally, mastery.
Depending on your teaching goals for a given activity, you can even decide to allow
students to use a calculator.
Looking for the perfect way to use the Math Team in your class? There are a
number of approaches, including:
Independent work (in class, as homework, or for a students self-paced study)
Small-group work (mini-Math Teams work together to find solutions)
Whole-class work (your entire Math Team can work together to solve the problems)
For fun (assign students to speak the parts of different characters from the comic
strips)
Welcome Your Students to the Math Team!
A longtime comic-book reader and fan, and somewhat of a math-maniac, Ive combined
my two passions to create stories that students can both learn from and enjoy.
As your students begin their journey around the strange city of Mathtropolis,
please tell them, Welcome to the Math Teamwere counting on you!

Each Math Team Adventure corresponds with one or more of the teaching standards as delineated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The following list excerpts
NCTMs basic definitions of what instructional programs and materials for pre-kindergarten
through grade 12 should enable students to do. Use this list, as well as the Skills Chart on
page 9, to select pages and activities that will best fit the needs of your students.
2. ALGEBRA STANDARD
3. GEOMETRY STANDARD
analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes
and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships;
specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other
representational systems;
apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations;
use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems.
4. MEASUREMENT STANDARD
understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of
measurement;
apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.

8. COMMUNICATION STANDARD
organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication;
communicate mathematical thinking and strategies of others;
use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely.
9. CONNECTIONS STANDARD
recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas;
understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to
produce a coherent whole;
recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics.

Attributes of a Hero
Welcome to the Mathtropolis City Police Force!
This file contains information about the heroes youll be working side by side with:
the Math Team.
Weve given you a photo of each hero, and a list of information about their names
and abilities. In order to make sure this information doesnt fall into the wrong
hands, weve left it up to you to match the names and attributes with the photos.
Based on what you learn from each photo and from the clues, write the correct
heros name and exactly 3 attributes of that hero in the correct blanks.

I do not

Mmm. Why,

youre feeding me

Me either,

know how it feels to
be a Big Mac!
No, Emperor
Gloo-Tonyou mustnt eat them. Theyre
here to help me
serve you!
Please, Ms. Mathlete. You must help me. As head chef, I must
determine the exact amount of food to serve Gloo-Ton and
his warriors at each meal. If I serve even a little bit too
much or too little, Iand youwill become the
emperors next meal!
Ewwwww! Then
wed better get

Ms. Mathlete?
Maybe we should
