Nick Varano Leads Youth Travelers

At Lodi Lanes
By Vince Albrecht
LODI, NJ - Hi-Tors Nick Varano came one delivery shy of duplicating the 300 he rolled at Holiday, but had to settle for 289.
Following with 202-204, the talented 14-year-old topped the Stan
Niemiec bowlers with his 695 and together with his Hi-Tor I teammates Johnny Toscano 236: 601 and Matt Cona [a pair of 204s],
accounted for all the squads points in the 20-12 loss to sister entry
Hi-Tor II. It must have seemed like dj vu to the boys who had lost
to this same all-girls lineup at this venue recently and again were
outdone by Hi-Tor IIs balanced offense which rattled off an opening game 847 net fashioned by four deuces: Mercedes Morel 224,
Nicole Cona 211, AnnaMarie Zayas 208 and Victoria Varano 204.
On an afternoon when huge numbers were at a premium, Holiday
IIs Devin Crowley bucked the trend with 213-257: 668 and Jared
Duncan added a 200 to lead the team to a three-game sweep of
Montvale, 25-7. Best scores for Montvale came in the finale from
Joseph Hammer Mahoney 223 and Chris Torres 199.
Holiday I parlayed a bevy of 200s to snare two of three games
from Bowler City III, 20-12 [2645-2573]. Manufacturing the deuces
were: David Neil 254-221: 650, Alex McGuire 202-221, Frank
Magyar 206 and Nick Cilento 200-202. Top singles for BC III were
Derek Lewandowski 226 and Steve DeFabiis 193.
In another position match, Lodi and Bowler City I, had a couple of
nail-biters that werent decided until the tenth frame deliveries of
the anchors. Lodi dropped those games by two and fifteen pins
respectively, but outpointed BC I, 17-15 [2800-2660] on the
strength of its dominant middle game win; leading scorers for Lodi
were Steve Plaszky 211-195-219: 625, Hunter Perry 225: 601 and
Jake Nappi 195. After a below-par stretch, BC Is Kyle Schellberg
exploded with a 264 finish, netting him a 613 threesome with the
other creditable singles posted by Kristen Kane 211 and John Behr,
who celebrated his fourteenth birthday with a 191, thirty-four sticks
over his average.
In the sessions final encounter, T-Bowl snapped a four-week losing skein by sweeping past shorthanded Bowler City II, 28.5-3.5
[2730-2526]; pacing T-Bowl were Tom Luchetta 210 and Dylan
Heinold 189.
After ten weeks action, the top four squads are Holiday II, Hi-Tor
I, Hi-Tor II and Montvale. Top boys averages are Nicholas Varano
231 and Kyle Schellberg 225; leading the girls are Nicole Cona 196
and Victoria Varano 192.
