Valedictorian
Adam Chang

I want to begin by thanking the people

who have made all of this possible, who
have brought us this far to graduation
and the beginning of adulthood. Thank
you to our parents, for working so hard
and valuing us and our education so
much; very few people get to grow up
in towns like Livingston, surrounded
by this wealth of opportunities and
activities. Thank you to our teachers, administrators, and staff. And, of
course, congratulations and thank you
to my classmates weve come so far
together.
Im not going to give any advice
today. There are many people here who
are more inspiring, more experienced,
and more credible than an 18 year-old
than this18 year-old. I only want to share
a brief realization I made recently.
Two weeks ago, someone truly intimidating confronted me, showing up
at my house out of the blue. This was a
person I used to be close to, but someone
I havent seen in a while; weve steadily
grown apart over the years. I knew he
would reappear one day, but I always
imagined it would be sometime far off
in the future, in the same way we put off
summer assignments until September
every year. I was frightened by what he
would think of me, and by what I would
think of myself upon seeing him. Many
of you actually knew him, and probably
wouldnt want to deal with him either.
His name? Adam Chang I am talking
about my eighth grade self.
Of course, he didnt physically ap-

pear at my doorstep; what showed up

was the letter I wrote to myself at the
end of eighth grade, the one many of us
wrote. What scared me wasnt thinking about a cringe-worthy, awkward
Adam I still see him in the mirror
every day but rather remembering
the hopes, dreams, and expectations
I had four years prior.
In this letter, I remember writing
a lot of questions. Ive always asked
lots of questions; those of you whove
taken any class with me including
and especially physical education
know what Im talking about. But I
remember lling that letter with questions; I guess eighth grade Adam really
wanted to know how things would turn
out. There were initials with question
marks. Careers with question marks.
TV shows even. And, of course, holy
grail questions repeated on every page,
like Who will you become? and
What does the future hold?
Imagine our eighth grade selves
appearing and asking us those questions today. How do we answer? How
does anyone condense four years into
a few words? We might respond with
platitudes like youll get there or
what will be will be, but deep down,
well have much more complex answers and feelings. Well understand
what grandparents feel when their
grandchildren ask them about their
childhoods, about the past.
Like grandparents reminiscing
about the past, were likely to relive
some happiness when we remember
our triumphs and experiences and unforgettable memories. But well also
nd some sadness when we realize
that all of those happy times are in the
past. People call today bittersweet
for a reason.
Well also face some regret when
we think about the could have beens
and the things we would have done
differently. Well give some advice
to our thirteen and fourteen-year-old
selves: try out for that team, sit at a
different lunch table, dont take everything so seriously.
I didnt open that letter because I
didnt want to answer those questions,
to face those feelings. I didnt want
to be the grandparent longing for the
years gone by. And I certainly didnt
want to be the grandparent in a rocking chair, wondering about the friends
I stopped talking to, the countries I
didnt go to, and the sports and musical
instruments I stopped playing.
What I realized, however, and this
is something obvious, but something
I, and I imagine many of us, lost track
of. What I realized was that we are not
the grandparent. We are still the child;
we are still the ones asking What

does the future hold? Four years of

high school even 18 years of childhood is nothing compared to whats
still in front of us. Everything that we
wouldve changed we still can; all of
our dreams we can still act on.
It wont be easy. Our futures are
as foreign to us as this day was to our
eighth grade selves, no matter how set
we are on a major or career. Well walk
away from today believing that we can
do anything and that we will change
the world, but whatever were looking
for is a long way from here, and on
this journey, there wont be forgiving
teachers or politely-worded e-mails
from Mr. Stern. And, inevitably, there
will be happiness, but also sadness,
triumph, but also regret.
I opened that letter yesterday. Four
years have passed since eighth grade
Adam wrote those questions. I began
laughing at him, because his questions
reected how young and nave he was
but not because they were overly
vague or unrealistically optimistic. I
laughed because I dont imagine any of
us nding answers anytime soon.

Principal
Mark Stern
Good Afternoon Class of 2016.
I congratulate all of you for
reaching a major milestone in your
lives high school graduation. The
paths that have brought each of you
to this moment were individualized.
You have explored opportunities,
made choices, faced challenges, and
found successes that you will take
with you as you leave the everyday
life of Livingston High School. For
some of you, it was becoming Merit
Scholars, published writers, State

Sectional Champions and world-class

athletes, recognized philanthropists,
commissioned artists, professional
researchers, applauded performers,
and decorated business leaders of
America. For others, it was attempting a course that you knew was going
to be difcult before it began, but
taking it because you knew you could
do it, or dedicating countless hours of
time and effort to make the team.
And while you have each traveled
an independent road to reach this
moment, it is your collective spirit
as a class for which you will long be
remembered. I knew that the Class
of 2016 would be an outstanding
senior class while you were still in
your junior year. I vividly remember
the junior prom of 2015 as the most
festive, the most cohesive, and the
classiest prom I had ever attended
(and Ive been to a lot of them). While
students, especially those on the blue
team, lingered in our eld house long
after the conclusion of Senior Games
keeping the celebration going, the
faculty and parents present praised
the Class of 2016 once again for an
awesome showing of soul and unity.
But the dening moment of Livingston High School 2016 for which we
will be remembered and revisited for
years to come was our March Lip Dub.
As our senior class, you have forever
left your mark, demonstrating for the
world to see the love, dedication, and
pride that you have in being Lancers.
What I thought was going to be a fun
activity to infuse some community
spirit into our school became a viral
sensation. Media from across the
country turned their focus to us as an
exemplar of school unity. Neighboring schools replicated our efforts to
experience the energy for themselves.
The Lip Dub generated a tremendous
amount of pride for our school and it
would not have happened without the
willingness, humor, and talent of the
Class of 2016.
As someone who has been in the
building for close to two decades,
the other aspect of our Lip Dub that
leaves me in awe was hearing from
dozens of our alumni of previous
generations, and of even more through
teachers and students, who rejoiced
in the Lancer spirit after seeing us on
YouTube. Posts and e-mails poured
in. Comments like, Oh I wish we
did that while I was at LHS, Wow,
watching this brought me back to
LHS, and simply, I miss Livingston truly demonstrate the lifelong
connection our graduates have to
Livingston High School. Class of

Class of 2016
2016
2016, no matter where the coming
days or years take you, you will forever
be Lancers. I hope you will take time
after we wind down from graduation
to determine what that means to you
and what you want it to mean ve, ten,
and 50 years from now. It is easier than
ever to stay connected. Heck, we are
even streaming to families and Lancers
across the globe right now. There is an
entire Lancer community out there. Be
part of it. Network for sure, but continue
to support and celebrate each other
out there. Continue to check in to see
how your school will evolve and grow.
Continue to demonstrate your pride in
your town and in yourselves. Continue
to care. Because 75,000 viewers cant

be wrong.
On behalf of the Lancer community,
I wish you all the best as you begin life
after high school. Strive to reach your
individual best and discover more and
more each day what you want that to be.
At the same time, maintain and build
the sense of community you established
here at Livingston High School. Our
gifts are greater when they are shared
with those around us. Take a moment
to reect on all that you have accomplished together during your time at
LHS and thank those who have helped
you nd success along the way.
It has been an honor and a pleasure
working and celebrating with you. Go

Good afternoon parents, faculty,
administrators, and students. Above all,
congratulations to my fellow seniors
for making it to this day! I know it
denitely wasnt easy! I think that it
is fair to say that we have learned so
much in our time here at Livingston
High School. We learned that the letters
s-i-n in math class are pronounced
sine, not sin. We learned that a
politely worded e-mail can sometimes
actually get you what you want. And
we learned that we do have what it
takes to survive a seemingly endless
barrage of tests and homework. All of
these lessons academic, social, and

June

2016

personal have shaped us into the

people we are today, in ways that may
take us years to fully understand and
appreciate. And yes, this even applies
to the quotient rule for derivatives. For
that, we are all incredibly indebted
to this school. But of all of these lessons, there is one that strikes me as
the most impactful. In high school,
we learned to see and to be seen; that
to be seen is complicated, and to see
is difcult.
Now what do I mean by to be
seen? We have spent the entirety of
our high school careers living within
labels, labels that were based on the
lunch table we sat at, the classes we
took, the clothes we wore. And at one
point, we labeled ourselves. We told
admissions ofcers we were leaders,
we were creative, we were unique. In
fact, we frankly wanted admissions
ofcers to label us as the perfect match
for their school.
But this is what I know, and what
I think we all know. The labels that
have dened our lives are temporary,
specic to this time and this place.
Even now, the labels you were assigned in high school the class
clown, the brain, the athlete dont
matter. Looking around at all of us
today, rather than being a collection
of stereotypes and expectations, we
are Livingston High Schools Class
of 2016, united in our green gowns
and caps, our rush to come back from
senior lunch on time, our struggles
in A Hall trafc, our reluctance to
change for gym, and our battles with
senioritis. We have so much more
in common than what may drive us
apart. And once we realize this that to
be seen is complicated and sometimes
misleading and inaccurate we are
able to see.
As Cady Heron said in the critically

acclaimed lm Mean Girls, Calling

someone else fat wont make you
any skinnier. Calling someone stupid
doesnt make you any smarter. In
other words, labels alone dont change
who you are. This is what it means to
truly see. To truly see is to see others
for who they are past their labels. And
once we are able to do that, we can
truly appreciate others for whom they
are as people not which clique they
belong to; and what they accomplish
as individuals not the fulllment of
expectations that peers or authority
may place on them. What makes me
so optimistic that we can achieve
this goal of truly seeing each other
is simply through my observations
of all of you, my fellow classmates.
I have seen us work together during
Senior Games, cheer as one during
pep rallies and sports events, and all
let loose on the dance oor together
at prom. Through this and more,
you have shown that compassion
overrides division; that unity is more
powerful, and more enjoyable, than
a divided house.
Undoubtedly, however, the disintegration of labels has the most benet
on a personal level. Once you set
yourself free of what others expect of
you, you can start to achieve. You can
nd your own passions and explore
without bounds, and discover how
you can make a difference and touch
someones life. Many of you have
already been doing so, although unconsciously. You affect your parents
through simply your existence and
especially with which mood you wake
up in the morning. Sometimes, a smile
or compliment to a friend or even a
stranger, can make a difference bigger
than you know. However, today, I urge
you to make a conscious decision to
rst nd yourself, and then discover
how you can make your own unique
contribution to this world. Making a
difference is often complicated and
sticky, resembling more pain than
pleasure, more work than reward.
Despite this, I have no doubt that our
class will be able to rise to the challenge and will nd ways to positively
affect our world throughout the rest
of our lives.
Today on the turf, we, the Class of
2016, are one. Although high school
will not be the last time we are stereotyped or categorized, I hope that you
all recognize that we have a choice
as to whether we let these denitions
dictate our lives. Class of 2016, it has
been an honor to be your classmate
for the past four years and to be able
to speak to you today. I wish you all
freedom from labels and the ability to
y. I wish you all lifetimes of success
and happiness. Thank you.

Congratulations Class of 2016

Co-Salutatorian
Rebecca Lin

Esteemed faculty, parents, relatives,

friends, and the class of 2016, I am
honored and humbled to stand before
you today. Its so crazy to think that
our time together in the Livingston
school system has nally come to a
close. But before the ending of this
exciting journey, Id like to bring you
back to the beginning.
Do you remember your childhood?
Remember digging up worms from the
dirt and watching them squirm in your
hands, simultaneously intrigued and
repulsed. Remember creating a secret
language with your best friends, so
proud that no one else could understand what you were saying. Remember building pillow forts in the living
room and sand castles on the beach,
or running down hills pretending you
were ying, and laughing until your
sides ached. Remember conquering
every slide in the playground, chasing ice cream trucks, splashing in the
town pools, taking naps whenever
you wanted to (though some of us
denitely still do that), and everything
else that came with being a kid.
So even though were about to
graduate and have reached (or are
about to reach) adulthood, I ask you
not to forget your childhood hang on
to the imagination and sense of wonder
in that younger version of you.
Picasso once said, All children are
born artists. The problem is to remain
artists as they grow up. I know its
hard, but can you remember a time
when you played make-believe and
not the latest game in the app store?
As a child, you created endless new
worlds to play in simply by using your

imagination, and you told everyone

about your latest ideas no matter how
foolish they were because you hadnt
yet developed a fear of being laughed
at. But that doesnt mean creativity
has left the building. After all, I know
Livingston High Schools multitalented student body still expresses that
innate imagination in many diverse
ways. Our award-winning artists and
writers take whats in their mind and
put it on paper, making their dreams
into reality. Our forensicators,
drama kids, musicians, and dancers
share their passions and express their
creativity in front of audiences large
and small. Our robotics team and stage
crew wouldnt be able to design and
create such impressive robots or sets
without using their imagination along
with their technological savvy. And
our sports teams use their creativity
to think of innovative plays that allow
us to defeat our rival schools.
Besides imagination, I hope you
also carry your childhood sense of
wonder with you as we move on to
adulthood. Do you remember annoying your parents to no end when
you would keep repeatedly asking
Why? no matter how they answered
you? Even though it made you kind of
a pest (sorry mom), that question just
showed your deep curiosity about the
world around you and a natural love
of learning. But as your education
continued and you were overwhelmed
with grades midterms, nals, and
then, quarterlies? that natural curi-

osity may have taken a beating. If so,

I hope you can revive it in the future,
because itll make your life innitely
more fullling. Realize that an education can come from anywhere; keep
your eyes open because anyone or
any experience can become your next
teacher. Bringing a sense of wonder
to your life will teach you how to be
present, instead of just alive. Explore
and discover the world around you and
make the most of your future.
Finally, theres a Twenty-One Pilots
song you might know that goes, Wish
we could turn back time to the good
ol days/when our momma sang us to
sleep, but now were stressed out. But
I want you to know that we dont have
to be stressed out, and we dont have to
wish that time ran backwards. Weve
come a long way from our childhood
selves; weve gotten a lot older, a little
wiser, and slightly more mature. Weve
taken on responsibilities and weve
been rewarded with more freedom in
return. Weve learned to respect one
another and weve gained condence in
our own voices. So look to the future,
but dont take it too seriously; dont
lose your creativity and curiosity. Live
with a light heart. Love with an open
mind. And remember: as Ive learned
from High School Musical, were all
in this together. Class of 2016, Ive had
an absolutely incredible four years with
all of you and I hope your imagination
and sense of wonder help you achieve
your dreams and nd happiness in life.
Thank you.
